P4a, angles everywhere!

In numeracy this week we have been learning about right angles. We made right angle checkers and learned that a right angle is always a right angle no matter how big or small a shape is. We explored angles outside and found a huge stone slab that looked just like our angle checkers.

We began to make a map of our own farms. We had to use our knowledge of maps and area and also created a key.

In literacy we started writing persuasive arguments. Next week we will be holding a debate with P5a as our audience. P5a visited us this week to share their learning on different countries in Europe.

We did shot put in PE and we think we were amazing!

We also got outside lots, Tuesday was Rugby day and Thursday we had an extra long play outside which Miss Baillie gave us because we have worked so hard this term.

Today we will be taking home some of the seeds we planted- these just need to be planted into our gardens where they should grow bigger and flower.

The next few weeks will be busy in P4a. We are going to the Marches Book Festival on Monday- leaving at 10.45 we need a packed lunch, drink, waterproof coats and sensible shoes for this.

The following Monday- Monday 12th June- we have our trip to the National Museum. Packed lunches, snacks and a drink are needed for this- Please do not send in money as we will NOT have time to visit the shop.

Reminder we will be off on Tuesday 13th June for the Marches and the Gala Day is on Saturday 17th June.

Have a great weekend 🙂

Chicks in nursery

On Monday we were very excited to receive some chick’s eggs in nursery. At first we kept them in a special incubator to keep them warm. We have been carefully observing them and have watched some chicks emerge. Today when we arrived at nursery we discovered that all nine eggs have now hatched. Yesterday they looked very tired and were struggling to stand but today they have really fluffed up and are making lots of noise as they move around their crate. We have discovered that the brown chicks are girls and the yellow ones are boys. This experience has helped us to learn about life-cycles. I wonder if we will observe any changes next week.

Visitors to Primary 6!!

This afternoon, Mrs Kerr’s daughter and her friend came into school and told us all about their upcoming trip to Cambodia, where they are going to teach children English. They told us why they’ve volunteered to go and a bit about the school and children they will be working with. We are hoping to connect with them while they are there.

On Monday when we arrived in nursery, we discovered that most of our butterflies had emerged from their chrysalis. We observed our butterflies in their pavilion for a few days and then released them today. We have been looking to find out what plants we should grow in our garden to attract butterflies and have now planted a budlia. We hope as it’s flowers emerge, we manage to attract lots of butterflies to our nursery garden.  nearly all our children are now aware of the life cycle of the butterfly.

Daniel’s Chess Success!

We are very proud of Daniel Lane in P2/3. Daniel is only in P2 yet his chess skills are exceptional for his age! We are so lucky to have you as part of our school Daniel and we can’t wait to see how your chess progresses as you get older! Here is a photo of Daniel with his recent trophy! Our school is full of superstars! Please don’t hesitate to send your child along to see me with their achievements.

P1B Superstars!

Thank you so much to Mrs Kennedy and her lovely P1B children for their beautiful Assembly about ‘growing’ yesterday. The butterfly song was my favourite part as well as the recount of the Hungry Caterpillar story. Well done especially to Noah! What a great caterpillar you were!

We have so much enjoyed welcoming Mr Wells this week and we are so excited to be working with you! Go Team Springfield!

I hope that you have all been enjoying the sunny weather! Have a fabulous weekend!

Miss Baillie xx

P7a weekly news

P7 had a very busy week and are looking forward to a rest before we head to camp on Monday.

On Monday we had the first of 3 sessions on drug education with a focus on smoking. The children have all brought home a smoke free home pledge and were asked to try to give something up for a week to see how it may feel to have to give up something .

In Numeracy we focused on volume and capapcity this week. Our main aims were conversions from ml and litres, estimating, measuring and calculating volume of a solid using the formula volume=length x breadth x height. The children enjoyed making mocktails where they had to use exact measurements.

In Social studies we looked at what a city needs and then did research and presentations on whether Glasgow and Edinburgh meet the needs of their citizens, and how they do this.

In literacy we finished reading “The boy in the striped pyjamas” which was very emotional, Mrs Gordon did cry at the end as she thought she might. We will watch the film when we return from camp, and do a comparison of the 2.

In French this week we visited our nursery to teach a little bit of french to some of the children. I think they enjoyed our visit !

Have a lovely weekend and see you when we are back from camp.

P1B – Assembly Superstars!

Thank you again to those who came to our assembly.  We are lucky to have such supportive parents. The children are, quite rightly, very pleased with themselves for putting on two fantastic shows this morning. I am very proud of them too, they have indeed grown a huge amount this year, in every sense of the word 🙂

We have had three more very good talks about what Tess has been up to on her adventures.  All the children have been very confident and have spoken well.  I’m afraid to say, the snoring is persisting.  We’re looking forward to hearing what she gets up to next week.

We have been seeking shade the past couple of days, yesterday we went into the outdoor classroom to get some fresh air.

Our caterpillars are all in their cocoons and I think the warm weather may speed up their hatching.  They have now been transferred to the butterfly net with leaves and oranges in case they hatch over the weekend.

Have a lovely weekend.  From P1B and Mrs Kennedy

Sunny Days…

Hello!

What wonderful weather it has been this week!
We feel very lucky to have such lovely school grounds to use for learning about the outdoors and learning in the outdoors!
We worked with the other P5 class this week for our Grammar lesson outside in the playground. We worked in pairs and played against our partner, ‘up-levelling’ our sentences. Another pair then marked our work and double checked that we had calculated the correct amount. We recognised the importance of spelling words correctly and using a dictionary to check our spelling was accurate.

We observed our environment on Thursday and went into the school grounds (in the sun!) to use our senses to find something for each letter of the alphabet, this proved quite tricky for some letters!!
After we had completed our observation alphabet task, we sketched the environment we were working in. We had to include as many of the features from our lists as we could.
We then used our observation descriptions and created shape poems, giving our poem a title.

In Maths we were focusing on decimals. We were introduced to decimals creating art within a hundred square. We had to use 3 colours and then convert the amount we had coloured into fractions, decimals and percentages. Lots of us managed to find the fractions simplest form.
We then moved onto comparing, ordering and rounding decimals. Lots of us said it was just like money without the pound sign!
We were adding and subtracting decimals by the end of the week! Well done, P5a!!
Have a wonderful weekend in the sun!
We hope that the amazing weather continues!
P5A and Mrs McCartney
