Fruit fun in Primary 1B

We have been getting stuck into our Handa’s Surprise topic this week.  Thank you very much for all the fruit on Tuesday, we made our bar chart and apples were the clear favourite, followed closely by strawberries.  We all helped to make the chart by drawing our favourite fruit and sticking it on.  We then had a good look at what the chart told us and learned to read it.

We enjoyed eating our fruit together while we had our milk or water and listened to a story.  We also tasted some of the fruit from Handa’s Surprise, the mango and papaya were popular.

We have had lots of other fruit activities this week, we investigated floating and sinking with real fruit in the water tray, playing with fruit in the role play area, making fruit from play dough and looking at books about fruit and healthy eating in the library.

On Tuesday we went outside for PE, we are focusing on ‘Better Movers and Thinkers’ at the moment.  This week we were concentrating on moving our bodies well, controlling it and using and sharing space.  We also practised some throwing and catching ball skills, whilst standing still and moving.

On Thursday we were outside again, writing number 8.  We used chalk and stones to write with and skipping ropes to practise the formation of an 8 – which can be quite tricky!

Then we gathered leaves and took them back inside to make 8s using them.  There was super counting going on whilst we were collecting the leaves too 🙂

We worked hard to make our 8s and there was good discussion and thinking about the shape of an 8 and how it is formed when writing.

We also won the peg challenge again!  Extra breaktime on Friday was good fun! Have a good weekend everyone.

P2/3 are having a hoot!

This week in P2/3 we have been learning how to organise data into a venn diagram. We worked in teams to show the similarities and differences between Scotland and Maui.

We found out that some fruits such as tomatoes can grow here and in Maui. Pomegrante trees grow in Maui – we all tried some pomegranate seeds. Lots of us loved the taste!

In writing this week we listened to The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark. We each decided on a new character to make Plop feel better about the dark. We drew a storyboard and shared our stories with a partner. Next week we will be writing the sentences in our storyboards.

While it’s warm enough we are doing as much learning outside as we can. We enjoyed playing number bond bingo outside on the benches.

Here are some photos of our outdoor play this week:

This week’s star of the week is Rebecca. She has been my special helper this week and what a fantastic helper she was! Rebecca is always kind and helpful.

If you’re out and about on an autumnal walk this weekend, please could you collect dry leaves for our art lesson on Monday. We are making leaf collage owls to go with our owl stories. Here’s one I made earlier…

Happy leaf picking!

Amazing African Animals (P1A)

This week we learned two new sounds, ‘i’ and ‘s’. We used our magnetic boards to build words, made our sounds with play dough, wrote our sounds in salt, played games on the smartboard, made our sounds with stones and drew and wrote our sounds on a graffiti wall. On Thursday afternoon, we went outside with some chalk to practise our letter and number formation in the playground.

We have been continuing to work hard with our number formation. This week we looked at the numbers ‘7’ and ‘8’. We used spaghetti, jewels and cubes to make the number 7 and we used ropes and cars to make the number 8. We practised writing our numbers in our workbooks and on the whiteboards.

On Tuesday we went outside for PE to develop our ball skills. We played a game called Aeroplanes and Helicopters and then we began to perform movement skills in a sequence. We used the balls to learn how to throw and catch in different ways.

This week we have been continuing to look at the differences between Kenya and Scotland. Mrs King, Mr Campbell and Mr & Mrs Foster sent us photographs of different African animals which we enjoyed looking at. We have been working well in pairs and in small groups to make African animals for our African Surprise display. We wanted the monkey to swing from the trees so we worked in pairs to create the leaves for the tree tops. We have been using a variety of materials to make our display and we are very proud of it.

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

Blog Week Ending 29.9.17

Dear All

This week we made animals out of clay for our desert display. We still need sand and a sandpit.

In Literacy we did handwriting, practising, joining up double letters.  We read our reading group books. We did a reading comprehension about a family that was moving house. We listened to a story about Charlie and the chocolate factory that Sarah brought in, read by Mairi.

In French we learned our numbers and how to say out age.  handwriting practising joining up double letters.  In French we learned

In Numeracy we practised place value swapping numbers around and practised our times tables with a ball. We managed to get up to 7 times!

In health and wellbeing we made up or own aerobic routines and talked about what we would do in social situations e.g.  if we were invited to a party but didn’t have enough money for a present.

Hope you have a good weekend!

Alien Invasion in P2A!

We added to our seaside this week. We painted a lighthouse to go in our classroom. Some of us also started helping to make our ‘Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’ display and created light up lighthouses and paper plate seagulls! Thank you to Mrs Miller for helping us with this.

This week we were studying a book called ‘Beegu’. It is about a little alien who comes down to Earth and gets lost. On Wednesday we had a surprise visit! Miss Mudd had got a text from Mr Wells saying there were aliens spotted in our classroom. She rushed from Stirling to come and see them but must have just missed them. They left us lots of learning activities in the classroom and some tasks to do. Here are a few…..

  • We were building with moon sand
  • Writing with our digraphs in moon dust
  • Practising our fine motor skills by using the spoons to fish out alien eyeballs from the soapy water
  • At the Finger Gym we were decorating underpants with patterns using the tweezers and pompoms/beads/counters.
  • Moulded foil to make moon rocks
  • Reading words and sorting them into real words and alien words

We were also writing postcards from Beegu back to her family on her own planet. This was our last lesson on postcard writing so we had to try and remember all of the key features of a postcard.

We used fabulous describing words to create and describe our own aliens. We watched a short film by Andy Martin called ‘The Planets’. It is a short animation showing 12 different planets. We then created our own planets and labelled them. Miss Mudd was so impressed with our creativity. We then stood up and described our planets to the rest of the class.

We used question starters to come up with key questions that we would ask Beegu if she came to visit us. We then used ‘hot seating’ to get into character and practised interviewing Beegu.

In PE this week we continued our work on movement and ball skills. We practised using the rugby balls and did some obstacle courses and team games at the end to apply our skills. We also played some games to speed up our reaction times. We had to listen for the whistle and get up as quick as we could starting from different positions.

A big well done to all of the children who have brought in their owls for Miss Baillie’s competition. We have some wonderful entries. Here is Thomas showing us his owl baby.

In ICT we were practising how to log on independently. We played some keyboard typing games and practised our mental maths on Hit the Button.

In Maths we were looking at 2D shapes. We were talking about their properties and counting their sides and corners. We used the faces of the 3D shapes to create our own 2D shape aliens!

P2A were named class of the week! Miss Mudd is so proud of them. What stars!!

Springfield Rugby Stars

This week we started our after school Rugby club. All of the children showed great potential and were keen to develop their skills. We worked on passing and receiving the ball and communicating to our team. Here are a few pictures to show what we were up to!

Miss Baillie’s Literacy Competition Assemblies…

We had two very special Literacy themed assemblies last Friday to inspire us all to become writers. Miss Baillie held an ‘Owl Babies’ story-telling session and  invited all of the children in primaries 1 to 3 to write about the Owl Babies story.

The older children talked about what Autumn in Linlithgow looks and feels like and were asked to contribute a piece of writing to our new ‘Autumn in Linlithgow’ display which features in our main corridor.

Miss Baillie stressed that everyone can learn to be a great writer and that a positive attitude towards writing is the most important thing. We learned that at every changing minute, we have the chance to change or attitudes towards anything in life, including our ability to write.

Miss Baillie has challenged all children to complete their writing within the next two weeks. There will be prizes for the best efforts! What an exciting way to kick off our efforts in writing this term!

News of the children who receive prizes will follow in the next few weeks…

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

Love Miss Baillie xx 🍂 ❤️

A recap on what we have been up to in P4

Last Week…

som

Some children presented their own interpretation of the word “bullying”.  They also gave their own resolution to conflict or bullying behavior.

We  enjoyed a treasure hunt type activity which involved teamwork.  Each group were given a list of sums  and then had to hunt for the right answers which Miss Durano hid around the classroom.

This week, even though it was a very short, we have been able to carry out several important exercises.

We had our spelling test which most of us did competently!

We started learning how to subtract two digit numbers too.  This was really quite challenging for many of us, so we will be doing more of this in the coming week.

We have been able to focus much better on our reading groups this week.  Miss Durano is very proud of us for doing brilliantly at staying on task, within our group as well as  independently.

Well, we had several more learning experiences this week but we will have to stop here for now.  Have a great weekend everyone!

P7b Weekly Blog

This week’s blog was written by Robbie and Hayden.

After a long weekend we came back to school on Wednesday ready to start the week. We started work on a presentation on Brazil. Many groups had chosen to research the Amazon rainforest and its animals but we are also learning about favelas, carnivals and Brazilian sport. We then started drawings inspired by the bright art of Brazil. We then kicked off with multiplying using fractions and once lunch was over we had science with Mrs Tulloch where we sample plants outside.

On Thursday morning we got on the bus to go to the Risk Factory in Edinburgh. We had 11 different scenarios to work through. It was a fun visit and we learnt about staying safe in lots of different circumstances and how the risks and dangers associated with these could be managed. After our visit we had a late lunch and went to music with Ms. Bain. We finished off with writing about our Cake Fest mini-topic, a recount of the events and what we learned.

Before we knew it, it was Friday. On Friday morning we did mental maths and the boys that got into the cross country team went for a practice run with Mr. Logan. Then it was assembly with Miss Baillie who introduced our Autumn writing competition . Finally, we had break and an extended Golden Time to end of a short week. Our highlight of the week was the Risk Factory, the situations were so realistic! Look at some of our photos below.

Farm and flooding dangers

P7a – Yogatastic

We managed to cram a lot of learning into a short week. In PE we are doing a series of yoga lessons with Mrs Gordon. We learnt about posture, breathing and different poses. After following some body balance tracks Mrs Gordon asked us to get into 2’s or 3’s and create balances using the poses we had learnt. Look at our creativity..

.

We really enjoyed the relaxation at the end…

On Thursday we had a fantastic trip to the risk factory. We won’t say too much about it so we don’t spoil it for younger siblings, however it was a great hands on learning experience where we could experience risks and make decisions in a safe environment.

In numeracy we started our focus on decimals by looking at place value, ordering decimals and rounding decimals.

In literacy we were working on finishing our Cake Fest recount pieces where we tell our personal Cake Fest story and what we learnt in the process.

Happy weekend!
