Primary 2B

So our first term in 2B has come to an end. The children have settled very well into their new class and all worked very hard. We have had a good term and I have really enjoyed working with them. It was lovely to meet you all at Parents’ Evening. This week the children had a session of “Enjoyaball” which they loved. We also did “Cosmic Yoga” Harry Potter style which was great fun.

We have practised our Harvest songs which we sang in the Harvest Festival this morning.

The children wrote acrostic poems on Autumn which were fantastic. They hadn’t done acrostic poems before and very quickly understood what they had to do and produced some brilliant work.

We have finished “James and the Giant Peach” – our class novel, which we have all really enjoyed. The children did some visualisation work on when the peach was coming into New York. Some fantastic, detailed pictures have been produced. Our new book for after half term will be “The Christmasaurus” by Tom Fletcher.

We have started some work on Handling Data this week and looked at Bar Charts to begin with.

I hope that you all have a happy and healthy half term and all these horrible sickness bugs go away.

Space adventures in P5

We know we have not posted in a while, sorry, busy learning 😉

We worked in pairs to do research on an area of Space that we found interesting, we then created fact sheets about what we had learned.

In small groups we used junk to build model space probes, these were all named and then we shared them with each other. We also started to compare the planets, looking at things like size, composition, temperature etc.

With Mrs Tulloch we used cookies to recreate the phases of the moon- these smelled lovely. We then completed a meteorite investigation on the impact these have when they hit the moon.

Last week was our first assembly, it was on Space. Half of us were in the cast and everyone else was in the choir and backstage crew. We made planets, the sun, a rocket, a USA flag, an alien, stars and a few constellations. We all worked really hard on this and Mrs Baillie and Mr Wells said it was great. Our next assembly is on Friday 3rd November.

As part of our homelearning lots (and lots) of us made cakes that had a weather or space theme, these were delicious.

This week we started doing a comparison on Scotland and a country affected by Hurricane Maria or Irma. We will finish this after the holidays.

Both classes created writing based on Autumn and P5b made some Jackson Pollock inspired paintings.

We have now had 3 sessions with Rock Band- WE LOVE THIS! We have 2 sessions left, which we are looking forward to.  Some of the beats were tricky but we all had a go and sounded great.

This week we have rehearsed all the songs for our Autumn Assembly and most of our parents came along to chat with Mrs Law and Mrs Newton.

Holidays are now here, have a great week off. We are back on Tuesday 24th October 🙂

P5 🙂

P.S. Anyone who is in Edinburgh tomorrow or Sunday can watch our Quidditch Coach, Kieran Newton, take part in the Highlander Quidditch Tournament. It is at Inverleith Park from 10am until 4pm on both days.

Primary 6b

A busy week. The photos show us outdoors for PE.

We also took the learning outdoors in maths this week, when we created 2D shapes using  a variety of materials. We then identified the shapes and their properties.

In RME, we have explored the main religions and how they have a common theme running through them, known as ‘The Golden Rule’. We have discussed how this relates to school and our lives and the way we treat others.

We have also participated in a National Sumdog Competition this week, competing against other pupils from all over the UK. Watch this space to see how we did.

Happy Holidays

BREAKING SPORTS NEWS

We are delighted to announce that our P7 boys team won the West Lothian Cross Country Team Championships at Dechmont Law. They participated last Wednesday and have been patiently waiting since to hear the news. They individually played a huge part in this success by each beating their personal best times recorded during practise sessions at school. Everyone here at Springfield is incredibly proud of their achievements and they will receive their gold medals at tomorrow’s assembly.

Congratulations Sam, Ross Wi, James, Struan, Nathan, Ross D, Robbie and Hayden! We’re incredibly proud of you all and you are a credit to our school.

P5 Space Assembly 🚀

Thank you so much to Mrs Newton, Mrs Law and the children in both P5 classes for their space themed assembly last Friday. We all enjoyed learning about the different planets and about space exploration. Here is a picture of the children performing.  Well done to all for a great effort!

Miss Baillie x

P4 Class have been busy creating pieces of art for our desert display.  Through the ‘desert topic’, children were been able to practice their research, note taking and computer skills.  This week, individual children were asked to find and write about chosen desert animal.  The task also included the use of netbooks to do their research.

Work in progress
The wall is starting to come alive!

H is very proud to be this week’s autumn writing winner.  Well done H for using adjectives and finding synonyms using the thesaurus! You can see H poem propped up the star writers wall!

Bem-vindo a Brazil

Ola e bem-vindo a Brazil. Hello and welcome to Brazil. This week P7a have been learning Portuguese as part of our topic on Brazil. We learned greetings and phrases such as “how are you?” and numbers from 0-10. We noticed some similarities to Spanish too. Here is a game we played where we had to match up the English and Portuguese words as quickly as possible. Our winning team was Tamzin, Aidan, Alastair and James.

We did lots of research this week on deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest, we were focusing on the environmental impact of human activity. We found the information quite alarming, especially statistics like the equivalent area of 6 football fields per minute is being destroyed, and that had deforestation continued at the rate it was in 2004, there would have been no rainforest left by 2030. Luckily the rate has slowed significantly, but P7a feel this is still not enough. Next week we will investigate further.

In literacy we learned about figurative language and used our knowledge to create feelings poems using personification to celebrate world poetry day on Thursday. We were inspired by the movie “Inside Out”. We worked in groups of 4 to describe a feeling eg joy, sadness, happiness etc.

To help remember our spelling words we played the games we had created for homework last week. Everyone had great fun whilst also remembering their words. Here some of the girls were playing their version of scrabble.

We had some good news at assembly this morning when Alexander Rankin won the upper school prize for Miss Baillie’s Autumn Writing competition. Alexander had gathered facts about Autumn in Linlithgow and presented them beautifully including some lovely pictures of Beecraigs in the Autumn. Alexander won a book token, well done Alexander!

Happy weekend from Mrs Gordon and P7a.

‘Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, involve me and I will learn.’ – Benjamin Franklin P6A

Another learning filled week.  There is no lazing about in Primary 6. We started our week off with some various warm up  exercises and then some classroom yoga. We had to make sure that during our exercises we were conscious of our space. During yoga we needed to try and keep our balance throughout the different poses.  Next week we will be back in the hall and continue to learn some more basketball skills.

Using the netbooks, we worked with our partners to create a PowerPoint.  We researched the different features and places that the River Forth run through. We used the information that we have gathered to create a PowerPoint presentation. Next week, we will be presenting this to the class.

Comment ça va? In French this week, we learned the vocabulary for asking someone how they are doing, and we learned the vocabulary for how we would reply to this question. We paired up with a partner and we practiced how we would greet someone, ask how they are, respond to being asked how we were doing, ask their name and tell them our name. We had the whole conversation in French!! Next week Mrs Matos will be recording our dialogue so that we can listen to our pronunciations.  Ask us to share with you the vocabulary we have learned.

We have listened to some more chapters of our novel, Wonder. We have gotten to the part in the story of where August ( main character), is going on a tour of the school. We were also introduced to three new characters, Charlotte, Julian and Jack. After listening to the school tour chapter, we stepped into the shoes of August, we started to plan a diary entry of the school tour. We learned some key features of a diary entry. When planning we needed to make sure that we included how August was feeling , his thoughts on the three children and describe what the school looks like.  This week we completed our Autumn poems for Miss Baillie’s competition. Even though none of us won from our class, Mrs Matos was very impressed with the quality and creativity of our work. make sure to read our poems when you come along to parent’s evening next week. In Literacy we have been concentrating on editing skills. We have been reading a passage, and needing to identify, capital letters, punctuation and spelling, we all editors in the making.  To reinforce our weekly spelling words, we played some active spelling games, such as hangman, scrabble, and used some foam to write our spelling words in.

In Numeracy we finished with rounding numbers in addition and subtraction. We have started to multiply and divide numbers within 10, 100 and 1000. We have learned that multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000 that we do not only just add a zero, but rather that the number is 10  x bigger than  or 100 x bigger, or 1000 times bigger. We’ve been working on our mental agility through our weekly number talks, our mental maths workbooks and we have been getting a head start on the National Sumdog competition.

We’ve been learning about the golden rule in RME this week. We learned that although worded slightly differently, all religions have the same golden rule, and that is that we should treat others how we would like them to treat us. We looked and discussed the different ways the golden rule has been written for each religion. We agreed that even if you do not follow any particular religion, the golden rule is still a great rule to follow.

Patterns and Owl Babies (P1A)

This week we have been learning to copy, continue and create patterns. We looked at the patterned elephants in the story ‘Elmer’ and then we made our own patterns using colours, 2D shapes, counters and Lego bricks. We also played pattern games on the smartboard and made our own patterned Elmers.

Now that we have finished learning how to write our numbers to 10, we have been using our knowledge of numbers to count out a given number of objects and record the results. We have enjoyed playing different counting games and practising making and writing all of our numbers from 0 to 10.

Miss Baillie held an ‘Owl Babies’ story-telling session and then challenged us to make our own owl babies for her Literacy competition. We used lots of materials such as cotton wool, crepe paper and tissue paper to make our own owl babies. We worked very hard with our owls. Don’t they look fantastic!

This week our new sounds were ‘m’ and ‘r’. We used play dough to make our sounds and practised writing our sounds with rainbow writing, in salt, on the whiteboards and in our workbooks. We drew ‘m’ and ‘r’ pictures and we played bingo! Using our new sounds, we were able to build and write words such as ‘mat’, ‘map’, ‘rat’ and ‘rip’.

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂
