Primary 2B

The children really enjoyed their Halloween party organised by the P.T.A.  Lots of scary outfits and dooking for apples. Thank you to the P.T.A for organizing it. Photos to follow.

We had fun making paper flowers for our phonics blends. The children are working hard on addition to 20 and doing really well.

The children have enjoyed learning about the animals that hibernate at this time of year and writing a little diary for their chosen animal. In writing we have started a Big Writing Adventure and the children enjoyed the first mission.

We’re getting really good at our Nativity songs. So lots to look forward to!

Enjoy Bonfire Night and be safe.

Week Commencing 30th October 2017

On Monday in Maths we were learning about lines of symmetry in shapes, art and architectural buildings. Then in the afternoon we had a fantastic spooky time at the “Halloween Hop” where we got all dressed up in some amazing scary costumes, played lots of games and showed off our “spooktactular” dancing skills!

We had great fun on Wednesday afternoon creating our own firework display pictures. We had a look at some abstract art and explored the use of different line drawings to create our displays. We also decided it was really important to learn about Firework Safety before the weekend to ensure we all stay safe during Fireworks Weekend.

We also listened to the story that will be the focus of our Scottish Book study, The Secret of the Kelpie. We really enjoyed looking at the illustrations and discussing the exciting events throughout the story.

Happy Halloween

This week we had the Halloween Hop! A big thank you to all of the parents who organised and ran the event. The children all had a wonderful time. They danced the afternoon away in the Disco room and got crafty making scary masks.

In Numeracy we have been learning about addition. We have revised our addition to 10 facts and enjoyed practising our strategies at the different stations. We have been using ten frames to develop our understanding of number and used this to support our learning at our desks.

We have started our new class novel ‘The BFG’. In the first chapter we were introduced to the ‘Witching Hour’. We practised our cutting skills to create a window frame with the BFG inside it. We pretended to be Sophie looking out into the night sky.

We were making tricky word towers. We had to pick a Jenga brick, read the word then build the tower.

Miss Mudd had put out some new resources in the Finger Gym and Maths Challenge area. We have to practise threading beads onto sticks and make different patterns. We practised weighing different Autumn objects and tried to see if we could make them balance.

This week we started our Big Writing Adventure. We were introduced to Fizz who is our P2 Writing Agent. He set us challenges and sends us messages with tasks to complete. This week we were looking at nocturnal animals and used some fabulous adjectives to write some descriptive sentences.

Have a lovely weekend!

Fun, fireworks and fitness (P2/3)

We got the week off to a great start with the Halloween Hop, take a look at our spooky costumes! We enjoyed dooking for apples, making Halloween masks and playing Mrs Gordon’s party games. Thank you to the parents for organising this for us.

In Maths this week we have been adding 3 single digit numbers. We used strategies to help us do this quickly such as looking for number bonds to 10 and starting with the biggest number.

In Literacy we started our Big Writing Adventure on descriptive writing, we look forward to sharing this with parents next Tuesday morning. We also worked on sequencing a story about Bonfire Night in the correct order, this was a good way of practising our reading skills.

In Art, Miss Prince challenged us to a ‘no paint brush’ challenge, we used card, cotton buds and straws to create fantastic Linlithgow Palace firework paintings. We’re really pleased with how they turned out!

In PE, we are working on our fitness and setting ourselves personal goals each lesson. We enjoyed completing our fitness circuit activities outside in the sunshine on Thursday.

Nativity Practices are in full swing for the P2s and the P3s have started learning about the legend of the Kelpies. We can’t wait for our trip to the Kelpies on Tuesday 14th November!

Enjoy the fireworks this weekend and stay safe.

A reflection of our weeks learning.

We had lots of fun on Tuesday, wandering around the classroom for 2D shapes and identifying their properties. Some of the properties we looked for were; edges, sides, corners, vertexes/points.

In literacy we were focusing on parts of speech, we worked in pairs and were given a sheet with words on it. We cut out each individual word and we had to sort the words into the different parts of speech, e.g. nouns, adjectives, verbs. We were also given a passage, The Terrible Twos, and we identified the nouns, adjectives and verbs.

We finished our diary entries, and we used our planning to help us. We had to focus on the elements of a diary entry and the character’s feelings.

On Wednesday we were learning to visualise nets of closed and open cubes. We cut out the templates (or nets) on squared paper and investigated which faces were opposite each other. We also learnt the properties of a few 3D shapes.

In science we designed and created our own quiz boards in partners. We had to use paper fasteners, crocodile clips, and bare wires to make our game for the P2’s work.

We went to the Primary 2’s and we helped them research woodland creatures. Once we found out some facts about the creatures, we helped them write the facts into their jotters.

On Thursday we went to music with Miss Bain. She taught us a Halloween song which we accompanied with instruments.

We also researched the Amazon River and we wrote down at least ten facts. Using that information, we compared the River Forth to the Amazon.

We were studying the properties of 3D shapes, so we were shown a 3D shape and we had to name and then identify how many vertices, edges and sides were on it.

On Friday we listened to Wonder then we did a proofreading and editing task. After, we listened to Miss Bailie’s healthy lifestyle assembly. We also reflected on our week.

Thank you for reading – Joseph Moon

Baking Bonanza!

Thank you so much to Mrs Woolsey who continues to help us to support our children. Here are two of our wonderful P2 boys indulging in a spot of baking with Mrs Woolsey. Baking helps children to develop Numeracy and Maths skills in a ‘real-life’ context as well as developing their vocabulary and understanding of the world around them. It is also messy and lots of fun!

P7a Poppy Factory visit

P7a had a fantastic trip to the Poppy Factory this week. It was great to learn lots about World War 2. Mrs Gordon, Beth and Aidan got to dress up as well !

We learnt about the history of the poppy, and then had a tour around the factory where we saw how the poppies and wreaths were made. A lot of us were surprised that the majority of the process is done by hand, by volunteers who are all ex-servicemen.

We then got the chance to make some poppies. Have a look at our photos below.

Happy weekend from P7a and Mrs Gordon

P4 Class

Literacy- Scotland Book focus.  Our class novel is a Scottish version of “The twits” which is “The Eejits” . Children drew their visual representation of ” The Eejits”.

The P4s searched for Robert Burns poems during netbook time.  They looked for Scottish words that they do not understand and found its meaning via web search and context clues.

The children did their first BIG writing task for the term.  The really enjoyed the missions.

For Maths, we are learning about shapes its properties. This is an emoji which has an octagon face.  The children played football multiplication and did CLIC exercises.

Alexander and James Choi came to visit the kids on Friday!

Olivia got a certificate for trying healthy food choices during her holiday!

Pupil Achievements for this week…

Here are some of our achievements from this week…

Well done to B in P5 for achieving success in swimming and for being able to move up a level! Great effort B!

Congratulations to C in P5 for his birthday this week and for receiving an amazing toy called ‘Mr Speck’ which he brought along to show me!

Well done to two lovely P2 girls: C for her massive effort in Writing and to M for taking part in a fun run with some of her Springfield friends!

A final mention goes to S and E from Miss Mudd’s lovely P2 class. These girls took part in an amazing, science-based play opportunity this week to make a potion to turn their teacher crazy. I can tell you that I drank their potion and it certainly worked on me! My goodness! 😝

We do have lots of fun at Springfield and we certainly are a happy school full of happy children!

‘Being Healthy, Being Active’ Assembly

We had an assembly today to remind us all how to stay active and healthy and the different ways that we can achieve this. We learned about The Eatwell Plate and how every food can be eaten in moderation as part of a balanced diet.  We also talked about different sports and ways to stay active.  Springfield Primary provides all children with two hours of quality PE each week in addition to Walk a Mile and a range of sports after-school clubs. We are also very lucky to have the wonderful Jessie and her kitchen crew who cook our children delicious and nutritious meals! We truly are a healthy school!

Happy weekend!
