P4 Class

Primary 4 children have been exploring different types of 2D shapes.  Not only did they learn unfamiliar ones, they also got creative in representing them using natural materials.  We spoke about individual shape properties and compared them with each other.

The children were also measuring and estimating the size of each sides of a particular shape.  They used the rulers to support them in finding their accurate measurements.

The rugby session on Thursday was a success.  The children really enjoyed learning to pass the ball to the side. They were also thrilled when they had to snatch rugby tags from each other.  The walk was long but the children soldiered on.

Spelling:  The children were leaning  to spell words with ‘wa’  for ‘wo’ sounds.

Literacy (writing): They wrote about their Halloween experience.  They learnt about paragraph writing, margins and indentation.

For PE , the children practiced skills such as power skipping and heel flicks.  For Music, the children made musical spells.

Welcome to Pupil Council 2017/18

We had a very productive day in Pupil Council today during our committee time. We elected our new Chair and Vice, as well as other key roles. Then we had to plan our first fundraising event of the year…Children in Need 2017.

Springfield’s Pupil Council will plan and host a “Spotacular” for Children in Need 2017. Our event will be held on Friday 17th November 2017 where all children will be asked to dress down and wear something spotty whilst bringing in a pound.

In addition we will have a “Bake Sale” where we would like everyone to bring in some home baking, and some money to buy some treats ! Please remember no nuts or kiwi in your baking, and we would appreciate the inclusion of any allergen free baking (clearly labelled).

Happy baking, from Mrs Gordon and the Pupil Council.

P7a Cafe’s and Flowers

P7a finished their decimal focus this week by making anchor charts with key information about working with decimals. They then moved on to use their knowledge of addition, multiplication and subtraction of decimals in the maths café. Each child could pick their challenge level “mild, spicy or hot” and had to answer questions from that menu. The next stage was to create their own maths café. They could create a menu for a restaurant/café of their choice and then a partner had to visit their restaurant with their “family” and order. The waiter then had to add up the bill (without a calculator) and provide imaginary change. Some children will finish off this activity early next week. Although fun to create the menu and pretend to order lots of food, the children were using key transferable skills for learning, life and work.

In literacy this week we were very lucky to visit Linlithgow Primary on Monday for a theatre performance of “up to speed”. The performance touched upon feelings, being different and changes ; all relevant topics for the children.

In Guided Reading groups the children worked together to ask and answer questions using Blooms Buttons and Blooms Flowers. These tools help promote higher order thinking and questioning skills by challenging the children to think in depth about what they are reading.

Primary 3/4 Blog Week Ending 3.11.17

Dear All

P3’s had a great Hallowe’en party on Monday!

This week in Literacy we continued our Alien Mission with Big Writing adventures by writing a report to Aliens about how Humans lived, what they ate, what they did and what they were like. We were listening to lots of stories in Scots language e.g. the Gruffalo’s Wean, Billionaire Bairn and Fairy Stories including Wee Reid Riding Hood! In French we learned to say the months and practised with a ball game. If we landed on ‘aout’ we were ‘oot!’

In Numeracy we learned to estimate the length of objects in the classroom and then measure them. We did Hallowe’en activities to find a pumpkin using odd and even numbers.

On Thursday we went to the rugby club and when we went back to school we went on the trim trail. At rugby we wore belts and ribbons and ran fast.

Hope you have a good weekend!

Primary 6A class blog

On Monday we had a fun day, first we did some work on 3D shapes by making our own shapes with paper. We had an early lunch and at 12.00 we set off to go to the Loch to have an interesting time with the rangers! We did some art using only the resources around us which were nature. Next we made the green man out of clay, we moulded the clay into the face of the green man on the trees and after that we stuck grass and autumn leaves on the green man’s face. On Tuesday it was Halloween!!! Mrs Matos turned into a witch, and sang us the song, ‘The witches of Halloween’. We learned the history of Halloween and the meaning behind it. After that we did paintings of a Halloween night and tried to make it as spooky as possible. We did some assembly practise and we all got our lines. On Wednesday we learned about the artist Henri Rousseau and tried to do some jungle art inspired by him we also did some more work on our shapes. Some people went to help with the p2s to help them on the netbook. While the others practiced their spelling on Sumdog .We had science with Mrs Tulloch and made an electric game which was very fun, next week we will show them to the primary 2 classes . On Tuesday afternoons the Primary 6’s are very busy. Some children attend band rehearsals and others attend a golf lesson, which leaves some of the P6A and P6B learners join together to do some combined learning. This week we worked on our team building skills. Mrs Matos tried to encourage us to work with learners from P6B as this is a good way to form new friendships and to work as part of a team no matter who the team members are. Our team building exercises were lots of fun, we worked hard but we also laughed a lot.  We completed three activities, one activity involved trust. One member of the team was blind folded and the other member had to guide us through an obstacle course, we really had to listen to the instructions for this one. Second activity was called –  group knot, we had linked hands but had gotten tangled and we had to untangle ourselves. Lastly we had to save Sammy the gummy snake, you had fallen off his boat and needed his life jacket (polo sweet), we could only use a paperclip to save Sammy – we managed this ‘sweet’ activity, with talking and a lot of problem solving.

On Thursday we enjoyed some spooky music with Mrs Bain. In Maths we used hula hoops to create a Venn diagram, we used the Venn diagram to sort out the 3D shapes that we found at home.

After a busy week, it is finally Friday. Today we have been creating Grammar characters to help us remember the different parts of speech that we have been learning. Our characters will be displayed in our classroom, where we can always refer to them for help if needed. Committee time- today we all attended our chosen committees where we all worked on a variety of activities.

It’s been a fun week, an Environmental art trip, some spooky art, shape sorting and some team building. What more could we possibly do next week?

Party Time! P1B

It was a busy, busy week again in P1B.  We began the week by welcoming Mrs Marshall, our lovely new student, she will be in one day a week for the next three weeks.  She was in at the deep end helping us to make some orange dough for our Halloween themed play activities.  It is fantastic and has been well used.

On Monday afternoon we had the Halloween Hop, organised by the PTA, it was great fun! We looked amazing in our costumes and loved the disco with dancing and games and then making our own Halloween masks.  A big thank you to the PTA, parent helpers and P7 chidren who helped to make it run so smoothly.

In literacy we were learning ‘d’ and ‘o’ and we were writing some three letter words – sounding them out to hear which sounds we should write down.

We searched through lentils, spiders and ghosts to find sounds and CVC words.

We tried a challenge task – reading words to match them with the correct picture.

Play dough and writing in lentils.

We’ve been doing lots of maths this week, we started with addition – looking at two and then three sets of numbers and counting to see how many there were altogether.  We tried adding in lots of different ways – putting counting kids on buses, counters on Mickey Mouse ears, frogs in ponds, sponges and people in hoops.  We also have new maths books and we have been practising writing our numbers as we write our answers.

In outer maths we have been learning more about measure – using non-standard units to measure things around us.  We measured each other, then went outside and had fun measuring out there too.

On Friday we played with lots of different measuring tools, including metre sticks and rulers, we really enjoyed using these and I think we’ll have some very practical handymen and handywomen in the future.  In other activities we used cubes and counting kids to measure with.

In our exploration area we have a wooden marble run which has lots of small parts that require a lot of thinking and trial and error to fit the parts together to allow the marble to run along it.  Matthew and Kiernan worked very hard to make this run, they were a great team and didn’t give up until they had managed it.  Well done boys!

Some children worked on a Lego challenge this week with Mrs Woolsey our parent helper.  They worked really well together to make a tall tower and then build houses, they each had very clear ideas on how their house should be – fantastic designs 🙂

Enjoy your weekend and have a safe bonfire night.

Addition, Reading and Halloween! (P1A)

What a busy week we have had in P1A!

On Monday morning we started to look at adding to 10. We have been learning to add two and three sets of objects and find how many altogether. We have been using pebbles to add, adding people on a bus, using dice to make addition sums, using Mickey Mouse to help us add, adding in our workbooks and playing addition games on the smartboard.

In Numeracy & Maths, we have also been learning how to estimate and measure the length and height of objects using different materials such as cubes, paper clips and counters. We used building bricks to measure the height of objects and we used cubes, counters, pebbles and paper clips to measure the length of different items. We also went outside to measure in the playground! We looked for things which were longer and shorter than our feet.

This week our new sounds were ‘d’ and ‘o’. We made ‘d’ with our play dough and jewels, wrote ‘d’ words on the whiteboards, played ‘Dancing Dinosaurs’ on Education City, practised writing ‘d’ in our workbooks and looked for ‘d’ words under the lentils. When we were learning the ‘o’ sound, we made ‘o’ words on the magnetic boards, we drew ‘o’ pictures, we practised writing ‘o’ with rainbow writing and we played ‘Ollie Octopus’ on Education City.

As well as learning our new sounds, we have also been learning all the character names in our reading books. We have been matching the pictures to the character names; Mum, Dad, Kipper, Biff, Chip and Floppy. We have been working hard to use our sounds to read the words in our reading books.

On Monday afternoon we were very excited! It was the PTA Halloween Hop. We got to dress up in our Halloween costumes, make Halloween masks and dance at the Halloween disco. We had lots of fun and we would like to thank the PTA for all their hard work.

On Friday we were very pleased to hear that we won Class of the Week and the peg challenge! Miss Harrison was very proud of us as she knew how hard we had been working this week with all our new learning.

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂

Primary 6b

This week, we have continued to explore 3D shape, sorting and identifying their properties.

We also had a trip down to the Loch to create environmental art with the Historic Scotland Rangers. Take a look at the artwork we created.
