P2/3 at The Kelpies

In Literacy this week we wrote a recount of our day at The Kelpies, we all remembered to sequence our writing in the correct order and we included time connectives such as First, Next and Finally.

Here is D.O’s recount of our day:

On Tuesday 14th November we went to The Kelpies on our school trip. First we went to the visitor centre and we saw a gigantic Lego Kelpie and a video of how the Kelpies were made. Next a man called Andy took us to the canal and he told us that the Kelpies were not real it was meant to tell you to stay away from water because it is dangerous. After that we got a whiteboard and pen to draw The Kelpies then Andy said that we could go inside the Kelpie. The door opened by itself and I said we’ve been eaten by the Kelpies! Inside I saw a rusty horseshoe. Finally, we went to the park and played. My favourite part was going inside the Kelpies.

In Maths we have been working on addition (2 digit + a single digit), we used numicon and number lines to help us. Next week we will be working on subtraction. In mental maths we are getting really good at recalling the 3 times tables, we love the 3 times tables song!

Miss Prince made our reading corner into an underwater Kelpie Cave, we had lots of fun playing in there today 🙂

Have a lovely weekend,

Love P2/3 and Miss Prince x

Primary 2B

We are looking at the stories about Katie Morag for our Scottish Book Focus week. We have drawn a big map of the Isle of Struay as well as individual ones. We are in the process of using materials to create collages of the different characters who feature in the stories. The children really enjoyed this and were very quiet whilst working on these. We will finish them next week and this is what they were doing in the photos.

We are continuing to enjoy our class novel – “The Christmasaurus” and have now discovered the horrible, unkind girl in the story who we all dislike.

We are continuing to work on addition and enjoy using the Numicon to help us.

Nativity practice continues and the children know their positions hopefully and when to come on and off the stage.

Have a lovely weekend.

P7b Weekly Blog

It’s been another busy week in P7b, so here’s a brief summary of the goings-on…

Numeracy

P7b have been working hard when applying their decimals knowledge when using money. This week we have been focusing on bills and calculating total costs through various word and multi-step problems. Our enterprise projects have allowed us to use these skills in a practical context when resourcing items required and providing Mr. Logan with a total cost for our order. In doing so, we were asked to make price comparisons and attempt to gather quality resources at a reasonable price. On Tuesday we were lucky enough to have Mr. Fryer (Lois’s Dad) in to visit both P7 classes. Mr. Fryer works as a Senior Mortgage Manager for TSB was was able to share his wealth of knowledge around budgeting. He worked closely with each enterprise group, discussing their projects and offering some support to the calculation of their costs and potential gross/net profits.

Literacy

We are continuing to enjoy our group novels in guided reading; from Adolphus Tips to Alex Rider, and Gangsta Granny to The Hunger Games. Now that some groups have finished their first novel, they have been given the choice as to what text they read next. In P7b we promote an enjoyment of reading through the opportunity for personalisation and choice. Mr. Logan has been impressed with the level of expression we are beginning to use to engage our audience when reading. On Wednesday, we looked at our first ‘shared reading’ text as a whole class. We were studying a poem called ‘Wind’ by Dionne Brand. The poem was written in the first person and brought human-like qualities to the wind through repeated uses of personification. The higher order discussion was great to hear and we were amazed by how many features of the text came to our attention the more we read. On Thursday, we began using our new Big Writing Adventures resource with Mrs. Doran and look forward to more of these lessons in the coming weeks!

Health and Wellbeing

This week was our anti-bullying and racism focus in school. With kindness being one of our school’s values, we must always ensure we treat each other with the utmost respect and in a way which we would like to be treated ourselves. Mrs. Matos delivered our first two Respect lessons where we discussed gender equality and what respect means to us. We compared our definitions with the dictionary definition and rewrote what this looks like in our classroom. This will be used throughout the year to refer back to and promote positive behaviour and relationships in the classroom. We demonstrated kindness by dressing down and donating money to Chlldren in Need on Friday. Thank you to Mrs. Gordon and the Pupil Council Committee for organising such a successful event, and of course to those who baked. The cakes and sweets were delicious! We will let you know in due course how much we have raised.

P3 Week commencing 13th November

On Monday we welcomed Miss Claire Stevenson; student teacher from Glasgow University, who will be working with us for the next four Mondays. In Maths we starting learning about repeating patterns and in the afternoon we worked on our logo designs for the PJ Foundation competition.  The children produced some amazing designs for the logo, so fingers crossed we might be one of the winners!

On Tuesday we had our fabulous visit to the Kelpies. They did a super job listening to the tour guide and asking some excellent questions! The pupils had the opportunity to go inside one of the Kelpies and take a look around the visitor centre. The trip was finished off with a quick visit to the Helix Park. It was a lovely morning!

On Wednesday and Thursday the class then planned and wrote very detailed recounts of their trip. They worked very hard and wrote interesting and informative reports.

On Friday we did some “Pudsey” themed maths Sudoku and problem solving activities, followed by a visit to the Children in Need Fundraising cake stall. We all had great fun buying up all the cakes and then eating them up! Some of the class also took part in a Pudsey themed design an outfit for Miss Prince’s concert performance in December.  Miss Prince had a hard job choosing the winner as there were a lot of excellent entries.  After much deliberation Miss Prince chose Ella’s design – well done Ella and thank you to everyone who took part in the competition.

Primary 6B

A fantastic finale to our week. Well done to Primary 6B and their Assembly – All Different, All Equal.

Our assembly showcased our Health and Wellbeing work so far this session and the children’s talents when singing, dancing, acting and presenting.

Many thanks to everyone who came along and supported the children this morning.

Kindness and Tartan (P1A)

As part of our Anti-Bullying Week, we looked at kindness. We listened to the story ‘Last Stop on Market Street’ and talked about all the different things that CJ did which were kind. He gave up his seat up on the bus and he helped to give food to people at the soup kitchen. We then shared examples of when we had shown kindness. We drew detailed pictures of us being kind. When we have been playing this week we have shown kindness to others.

This week our new sounds were ‘u’ and ‘b’. When learning the ‘u’ sound, we made ‘u’ with play dough, practised writing ‘u’, played a memory game with ‘u’ words and pictures and made our own underpants! When we were learning the ‘b’ sound, we played ‘Bath Time Bubbles’ on Education City, found pictures beginning with ‘b’ and made ‘b’ words on the magnetic boards.

This week, we were learning to add one and two more and we were also finding addition facts for two and three.  We found different ways to make 3 with our play dough and ladybirds, made our own number sentences and played a game called ‘Ghostblasters’ on the smartboard to practise our addition facts.

On Thursday we were learning to describe and compare the capacity of objects. We looked at containers and circled which could hold more/less, used cubes to see how many cubes each container could hold, explored how many cups of sand filled different buckets and played a capacity game called ‘Pitcher Perfect’ on Education City.

This week we have been continuing to look at the story ‘Wee Granny’s Magic Bag’. We looked at wee Granny’s bag and discussed it’s pattern. We described what tartan looks like, the colours we could see and looked at examples of tartan. We made our own tartan using strips of red, white and green paper. Miss Harrison loved our tartan so much that she put it all up in our role play area. Now it is Wee Granny’s tartan kitchen!

Today was Children in Need Day. We came to school in spotty clothing and we helped to raise money by paying £1 to dress down and we went to the Pupil Council bake sale. We thought it was very funny that we got to eat cakes in our classroom! Thank you to everyone who helped support our Children in Need Day.

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂

Class of the week!

Literacy

In Phonics we have been learning about the au/aw sound. We wrote our own stories and tried to use as many ‘aw’ words as we could. We were using alphabet stampers to write words and revised some of our sounds using our new board games.

We continued our work on Katie Morag and learnt how to summarise a story. We read Katie Morag and the New Pier together. We then talked about the most important events and picked out 5 key events to write about. In our groups we all wrote a sentence and joined them together to make a summary chain. Mrs Miller also helped us create a life size Katie Morag picture for our classroom. We drew around Emma Turton and painted our picture of Katie.

We are really enjoying our class novel ‘The BFG’. We did a visualising task based on the description of the BFG. We look at adjectives to describe what he looks like and thought about what kind of person he was. Miss Mudd challenged us to give examples from the story to support our ideas.

Numeracy

We have been busy making patterns on our peg boards. We talked about our patterns being symmetrical and looked at how they repeat over and over again. We have continued our work on addition and looked at the story of 11 and 12. We used number bond rainbows to show the pairs that add together to make 11 and 12. We continued to practise our doubles and we are now super speedy with our recall.

Other

On Friday it was Children in Need and we all dressed up in spotty clothes to raise some money for charity. A big thank you to the Pupil Council and Mrs Gordon for organising the bake sale. We loved eating all of our goodies.

Well done to all of P2A for being class of the week AND winning the peg challenge. What stars! Hard work certainly pays off.

Have a lovely weekend
