Snowflakes and Sheep in P1B

We are gearing up for the nativity live shows and have been practising really hard this week.  You’re in for a treat – P1 make a lovely choir.  We’re very excited to have a real audience.

We have also begun to think a bit more about winter and Christmas. In art on Monday we made snowflakes by folding paper circles and cutting out shapes and then opening them up – we loved the results and were very surprised at how they looked when they were opened.  We were also able to practise the properties of 2D shapes again as we discussed and decided how to cut our paper.  This was such a big hit that a number of the children have been making snowflakes whenever they can!

We also made some decorations for the walls in the hall.  P1 made sheep, we all drew a sheep and 2 were chosen to be enlarged using a clever trick with a camera and the smartboard projector.  Then groups of children painted them and stuck cotton wool on their bodies.  Make sure you have a look for them at the nativity.

We finally learned curly ‘c’ this week – a few the children have been waiting for this day since the beginning of the school year!  We also learned all about ‘l’. We have been sounding out and writing a lot more words too.

In numeracy, we have been adding to 5 and 6 – learning recall of all the sums that make these numbers.  In outer maths we continued with time, looking again at ‘oclock on analogue and digital clocks.

As always, there has been some really good learning through play going on in P1.  We have some very inventive children who love to make models out of junk or sticklebricks, some like to draw or write, practising their sounds and motor skills, they are also very sociable at the writing table too – lots of chat going on! They have also been enjoying playing with the dolls house where they act out little bits of their own lives and make up stories.  Sometimes they also like to have some quite time with a book.

We’re looking forward to seeing many of you at the nativity.  P1B and Mrs Kennedy

Hi

Please  find attached reading and spelling home learning for this week. Please try to let youtr child go on sumdog to do budgeting and money.

Reading Comprehension

How to play charades – follow instructions. Please help your child if they find the reading difficult but try to let them think about following the instructions and why it is important to do things in a certain order. If you are really busy with the Christmas period and find it difficult to complete please talk about a familiar situation and why the order is important and put a note in jotter to say that you discussed following instructions.

Spelling

Your child should have written out their spelling words in their jotters. If they have time they can do a spelling wise. Otherwise please concentrate on the reading comprehension.

Numeracy

Numeracy is budgeting and money in preparation for the Christmas Fayre. In last week’s home learning most  children could count up the items but forgot to take change away from their budget. Some children used their total of the items as their budget. I explained to them that in a real situation it was unlikely that the budget would be exact or that people would bring the correct change. Please let them practice on sumdog or with real money. The crackers are priced at £1.50 so you could maybe practise how much ot would cost altogether and change from their budget. If you have any concerns about paying for the crackers please let me know confidentially by letter especially if you have a large family.

Apologies for home learning being sent out late. I will extend handing in day till Monday.

Have a good week.

Kind Regards

Louise

P3 Week commencing 27th November 2017

On Monday we worked hard to learn our new spelling patterns for this week and practised our words as we moved around the different active spelling stations. In Maths we continued learning about the different types of repeating patterns and began work designing our own tile designs.  In the afternoon we began work to create a “friendship circle” using our very own hand designs.  We also tried out our new “learning through play” activity centres.

We had a great time at the Bench ball Festival. The class had worked so hard throughout the term learning the rules of the game and practising their throwing and catching skills. Mrs McVay was very proud of how well we played in our games and how supportive we were of one another throughout the afternoon.

The glitter is out! Our classroom carpet is very sparkly after having a great afternoon on Thursday making Christmas decorations for the school hall and tree. We are busy making our Christmas craft to sell at the Christmas Fayre so please remember to come and visit us next Friday.

Nearly the Nativity! (P1A)

This week we have been revising adding numbers to 5 and we have been learning addition facts for 6. We played with dominoes and looked for the dominoes which made 6, explored different ways to make 6 in our workbooks and played ‘Save the Whale’ on the smartboard. We needed to know our number bonds to 6 to save the whale!

On Thursday, we continued to look at reading o’clock times on analogue and digital clocks. We played ‘Hour Hero’ on Education City, played o’clock Bingo and matched written, analogue and digital o’clock times. We have also been learning songs about the days of the week and the months of the year.

Next week is our Christmas Nativity, ‘A Little Nativity’. There is lots of excitement in our class! This week we drew detailed line drawings of sheep for our hall decorations. We used paint, cotton wool, glitter and tinsel to make our sheep. Look out for our hall decorations next week! We have been participating extremely well in our songs and we are looking forward to performing for audiences.

This week our new sounds were ‘l’ and ‘c’. When learning about the ‘l’ sound, we played ‘l’ Bingo with words and pictures, practised writing ‘l’ and ‘l’ words, drew ‘l’ pictures and played ‘Lovely Lollipops’ on Education City. When learning about the ‘c’ sound, we made ‘c’ with jewels, pebbles and counters, made ‘c’ with rainbow writing and made a ‘c’ graffiti wall. On Friday we had a turn of being the teacher! We used Miss Harrison’s magnetic letter board on the smartboard to show the rest of our class ‘l’ and ‘c’ words! We have also been learning to read and write our common words. This week our common words were ‘he’, ‘me’ and ‘is’. We played ‘Beat the Teacher’ and we were able to read our common words so Miss Harrison didn’t get any points!

Thank you for reading our blog post.

Road Safety in Springfield

Well done to the JRSO committe for rasing awareness of Road Safety at Assembly. They also went around all the classes to talk about Road Safety and provided materials to help everyone to think about being safe.

Scottish Book Week in P2A

Literacy

We have been learning how to give feedback to each other and how to peer assess each other’s work. We were working on using different sentence openers and used a highlighter to identify the openers our partner had used. We then coloured in the smiley face that we thought they had achieved. We said what we thought was good about their work and gave them a next step.

It was Scottish Book Week this week so we were reading some of the Katie Morag books. We read ‘Katie Morag and the 2 grandmothers’ then compared the characters in the story. We had to find words in the book to support our answers. We read a different Katie Morag story each day and talked about the different characters that we met. We also created a giant Katie for our topic corner. We thought of words that described her and added them to our display.

We finished our BFG story this week and we have loved every second of it! We used the story as a stimulus to talk about bullying and being kind to each other. The Giants are not kind to the BFG and it makes him sad so we talked about what we could do in that situation. We made posters to help people remember what to do if someone is being unkind to them.

Numeracy

In numeracy we were using our knowledge of number bonds to 10 to help us recall the bonds to 20. We noticed a pattern! We used a rhyme to help us remember the number facts. We made number socks to show the pairs that made 20. We worked with a partner to make our socks symmetrical. We are going to hang them on our washing line.

Other

It was our last week of rehearsals for the Nativity. We are all very excited to perform to a proper audience. We have been very busy sorting costumes and props. Well done to Harrison for winning the Enjoyaball trophy. We are very proud of your achievement. Well done to Zara for moving up a level in swimming. So nice to hear about everyone working hard outside of school.

We have also been busy doing Christmas crafts this week. We have made ribbon wreaths for the Christmas Fair. We also made paper plate angels to hang on the Christmas tree. It was very sparkly with an explosion of glitter in P2A!

Have a lovely weekend

Miss Mudd and P2A

P7 Skiing (week 1)

Today P7 enjoyed their first of four sessions of skiing at Midlothian Snowsports Centre. Once we arrived, we were kitted up and out onto the slopes in our groups. These depended on whether we had skied lots before, a little bit or never at all.

Group 1 were on the nursery slope today getting used to the putting on and taking off of skis, beginning to balance on both one and two skis and moving down a slight decline before stopping. Groups 2 and 3 moved slightly further up the main slope to the blue line and were attempting to gain some speed before coming to a stop. Group 4 were on the main slope and developing their ability to use snow plough turns whilst group 5 made their way to the very top where they focused on their pole planting and parallel turns.

Already after one week we are seeing huge progress with each child and look forward to seeing them further develop their skills and confidence in skiing over the next three sessions. The instructors were incredibly complimentary of the behaviour and positive attitude demonstrated by all of the children. Well done P7, we’re so proud of you all! Have a look at this week’s pictures below…
