Catch up with P1B

A quick recap of the past two weeks – we have fitted in quite a lot!

Last week we performed our nativity.  The children were very proud of themselves and I’m certain you were proud of them too.  Here we are before the Thursday night performance – it was great fun coming to school at night!

On Friday we had our stall at the Christmas Fair.  For our enterprise task we made salt dough Christmas tree decorations and reindeer lollipops.  We sold out very quickly and raised around £50 which we have to spend on our class.

This week we have been very busy making snowmen for our corridor display.  We tried out lots of different ways to create our pictures.  Some were quite tricky but we kept trying and didn’t give up, showing a lot of resilience.  It was worth it – the artwork is fantastic, well done everyone for helping to make our winter corridor look so good.

For our first snowmen, we were only allowed to rip  paper and glue it down to make a picture.  It was difficult to make the different shapes we needed and we had to use our hands carefully and tear slowly.

For our second snowmen, we drew around round objects and stuck cotton wool and felt on to decorate them, cutting the felt into the shapes we wanted.

For our last snowmen we used potatoes and white paint to print the bodies and then painted faces, arms and clothing.

N and A helped to make the big snowman.  They painted him, filled his body with polystyrene and designed his clothes from off-cuts of material.

Here is the finished result, we love it!  Please have a closer look the next time you are in.

We had some visitors on Wednesday for our ‘Learning Showcase’ afternoon.  The children certainly showed off their learning at the different activities, all relating to what we have been covering over the past few weeks.  We had a full classroom and all the children were eager to show their skills, they were very much on task too.  Thank you for visiting and well done P1B for being so enthusiastic.

We have been continuing our phonics and numeracy work.  Sounds ‘j’ and ‘v’ this week and number bonds for 8 and 9.

I can’t believe it’s one week until the holidays!  Next week we will have Santa’s workshop in our home corner, with toy designing and a wrapping station.  We will be enjoying lots of other Christmas activities too, including our party on Thursday and our family church service on Tuesday evening.

Primary 1B and Mrs Kennedy

Primary 2B

In Literacy we have been writing stories which started off with Santa having a problem. The children had to think about what the problem might be and how it could be solved, so that Santa could do his very important job on Christmas Eve. Some fantastic ideas. We have also done some work on my favourite subject – CAPITAL letters and full stops. We’ll get there.

We have been doing Wintery pictures of Snowy Owls for our Winter Wonderland display in the Infant area.

Thank you to all those who attended our Showcase on Wednesday. The children really enjoyed showing the adults what they were learning. Our activities were based on our class novel – “The Christmasaurus”.

In Maths we continue to work on subtraction.

The children have been learning some Scottish Dancing in P.E.

Have a good weekend everyone. Photos to follow.

Primary 3/4 Blog Week Ending 15.12.17

Dear All

This week in literacy we learned the ‘air’ sound. We did dictation and learned to write neatly, listen carefully, write words with the ‘air’ sound in them and put in punctuation. We revised our plurals from last week and we know that if the plural word ends in ‘x’, ‘ch’, ‘sh’ or ‘s’ we need to add ‘es’ to the end. We also learned about possessive adjectives e.g. I put on my coat. We learned how to write diaries and we wrote a diary entry of what we do on Christmas Eve. We had show and tell and people talked about their favourite things, while the others listened and then we gave them questions and comments to show that we were listening. We learned to work together as a team to write a story, using spinners to choose the character, setting and time.

In French we have learned the names for body parts and we can sing ‘heads, shoulders, knees and toes in French. We made monster pictures using body parts, numbers and colours when Mrs McAlpine said “Mon mostre a… We also learned how to ask what the weather was like and say different kinds of weather.

In numeracy we used Sumdog to practice patterns in shape and we also paired Christmas pictures on an advent calendar on the smartboard. We drew patterns on the board and others had to try to continue the pattern. We added numbers in a group using different strategies and concrete materials including rekenreks, cubes, counters, wizards on the wall and straws. Then we talked about what was the most efficient strategy.

In health and wellbeing we talked in our groups about bullying. We were given different situations and talked about the best way we could help people. In PE with Mrs Reid, we learned more Scottish dances, it was really really fun!

In learning across the curriculum we read another Scottish Hamish McHaggis book called ‘The Lost Prince’. It was about a baby deer that got lost in the woods of Balmoral Castle, where the Queen goes on holiday. In science we also learned about the body with Mrs Begarnie! We found out how the lungs work and conditions like asthma.

Hope you have a good weekend!

Festive fun in P1A!

What a busy fortnight we have had in P1A!

Last week our sounds were ‘k’ and ‘ck’ and our common words were ‘he’, ‘me’ and ‘is’. We played ‘Kit Kite’ on Education City, drew ‘k’ pictures, played ‘Roll & Read’ for ‘ck’ words, practised writing words and sentences on the whiteboards and wrote ‘k’ and ‘ck’ words in our jotters.

This week our sounds were ‘j’ and ‘v’ and our common words were ‘his’, ‘put’ and ‘was’. We made our own jellyfish, made ‘j’ with play dough and jewels, made a ‘v’ graffiti wall and practised writing ‘v’ with rainbow writing. We have been working very hard at writing words and sentences in our jotters and we have been practising writing our common words. We even looked for our common words which were hidden underneath paint!

Last week we learned addition facts for 7 and 8 and this week we learned addition facts for 9 and 10. We have been playing different number bonds games on the smartboard, looking for number facts on the dominoes, finding ways to make numbers with the play dough and using our number facts to play Christmas Dice Addition.

Last week, we finished learning about analogue and digital o’clock times. We played o’clock bingo, matched analogue and digital times, played o’clock games on the smartboard and finished our time workbooks. We have also been learning about the days of the week and the months of the year. For revision, this week we looked at patterns and symmetry but with a Christmas theme! We completed Christmas pictures to give them one line of symmetry, continued Christmas patterns and made our own patterns on Christmas lights!

Last week we performed our nativity ‘A Little Nativity’ to our families and the rest of the school. Miss Harrison was very proud of us as we remembered all of our words, we sang beautifully and we sang with lots of enthusiasm! We enjoyed performing our nativity. Here are some pictures of us ready to perform on Thursday night!

Last week we also had the PTA Christmas Fair. We made salt dough Christmas trees and reindeer lollipops to sell. We worked very hard on our salt dough Christmas trees and had to use a variety of materials. We also had to use our cutting skills and drawing skills to make our reindeer lollipops. We made about £42 on the day which was fantastic! We really enjoyed going round the fair and visiting Santa. Thank you to everyone for supporting us at our Nativity and at the Christmas Fair.

This week we worked really hard to make our winter display for the corridor. We made our own snowflakes by cutting out different shapes and we made penguins using black sugar paper, cotton wool and paint. We also used cotton wool for the snow on our display. Doesn’t it look brilliant!

Finally, we have been enjoying playing with our friends and using our new toys. We got some dinosaur fossils, dinosaur bones and magnifying glasses so we have set up an exploring area in our tuff tray. We also got some natural resources which we have been using for lots of different things. Miss Harrison also set up Santa’s Workshop in our role-play area so we have been busy writing letters, wrapping presents and designing and building toys!

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂

P3 Week commencing 11th December 2017

On Monday in Maths we continued with our work on number patterns and sequences. We looked at more complex number patters and learned strategies to find missing numbers and to continue the sequence so the pattern was correct.

In spelling we practised our common words by helping Mr Whoops who is not very good at his spelling. We helped him correct his mistakes and write out the common words he was not sure of.

In the afternoon we used our knowledge of shape to start to make 2D and 3D Christmas decorations. Then we joined with P2/3 to rehearse our songs for the family carol service which takes place next week in St. Michael’s Church.

The class have worked very well throughout the week revising and consolidating the work they have completed this term in Maths and Literacy. We have been practising our 3 and 4 times tables by playing lots of interactive games such as Bingo and Buzz. We have also been exploring different strategies to be able to mentally add and subtract two digit numbers. The class have enjoyed discussing their strategies with one another and playing games such as Top Spot to help develop their skills further.

We all thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to share some of our learning experiences on Wednesday afternoon during the Learning Showcase. The class produced some very interesting mythical creatures! Thank you to all our visitors for coming along!

Our whole week has been full of many opportunities to explore our creativity with many different art and craft activities in preparation for Christmas. We have been doing very well to learn our songs for the church service and school assembly next Friday.

Today we worked very hard to decorate and complete our “split pin” Santa and Elf decorations ready for taking home and hanging up beside our Christmas Trees.

Christmasaurus fun

Literacy

In phonics we have been learning our consonant blends. Miss Mudd’s group have been looking at pr, fr, gr, cr, br. We worked in partners to build words with our magnetic boards. We continued with our class novel ‘The Christmasaurus’ and set up stations with different activities for our learning showcase. We enjoyed having our special adults in to see us for the learning showcase. We used description from the story to draw the North Pole Ranch,  made Christmas lists and added up different amounts of money, designed and described new elves for Santa and used snow to practise writing our tricky words.

This week we also started our ‘Trapped in a Snow Globe’ imaginative writing pieces. Miss Mudd took photos of us pretending to be trapped and we used chalk and black paper to create our snow scene. We had to use our imagination to help us with our writing. We used our senses to help us describe the setting and used talking partners to help us come up with a mini story.

Numeracy

In numeracy we have been looking at subtraction stories for 11, 12, 13 and 14. We used our knowledge of addition to help us with our take away sums. We have learnt how to use a number line to subtract and how to use the Numicon. We have been doing a Christmas maths challenge each day to develop our ability to talk about our strategies. We were also applying our addition and subtraction knowledge to Christmas maths problems and we had to identify which operation we had to use.

Other

We made Christmas cards for our families this week. We used finger prints to create wonderful Christmas pictures. Well done to BW for moving up a group at his martial arts class. He also got a new tab. We are very proud of him for working hard to achieve this. A huge well done to all of P2A for winning class of the week again! Miss Mudd has seen a big improvement in behaviour and this has been recognised by other staff members too.

Have a lovely weekend

St Michael’s Day Care Centre Choir Trip

On Thursday 14th of December, Primary five choir members visited the Michael’s Day Care Centre. The journey wasn’t as easy as we had hoped due to the ice, but this only added to the excitement of the outing. We sang our school choir set and then sang some Christmas carols which everyone joined in with. The pupils sang beautifully, some of the people at the Day Care Centre were even moved to tears. Everyone then had a snack and pupils chatted with the people at the Day Care centre, who were very grateful for the visit. All in all, the trip was a huge success and Mrs Hogg was very proud of the pupils who behaved brilliantly and sang beautifully. Thanks also to our ice spotting parent helper who helped us walk there and back as smoothly as possible.

Primary 6B – Scottish Parliament Outreach Visit

Mrs Miller from the Scottish Parliament Outreach Team, visited us in class this morning.

She shared lots of information about the parliament and allowed us to explore different issues using an interactive voting system.

We had a mock election, with Party Leaders delivering a manifesto.

Well done to the ‘Save the Earth Party’ who won our Election.

We also had a debate, with the mace present. Our Presiding Officer chaired the debate extremely well and the chamber voted that we should not have one hour of PE every day.

Primary Five- 12.12.17

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It has been a busy few weeks in Primary Five.

In Maths we have been practising our mental maths skills and also learning about co-ordinates, angles and how to use compasses and protractors.

In Literacy we have been using thesauruses to up-level our vocabulary in our writing. We have been enjoying ‘The day the world went Loki’ book and all associated tasks.

We designed and built bird boxes and found out some interesting facts about birds then typed these into fact files.

We are enjoying learning about advent and the Christmas story. This was particularly useful during our R.M.E workshop with Bubblegum ‘n’ Fluff, where we learned more about the Nativity and Christmas Story. We also made decorative tiles to show aspects of the Christmas story. We have been enjoying our class advent calendar too.

In art we have been creating lovely festive arts and crafts. We also learned more about colour mixing when painting the Three Wise Men for the infants nativity performance.

During our Music lessons we have been listening to classical music including ‘The Hall of the Mountain King’ and played instruments such as drums, xylophone, symbols and maracas. In class we have been practising our Class Christmas songs and also church Christmas songs.

The Primary five pupils from the school choir are practising hard for their performance this Thursday at St Michael’s Day Care Centre. They are all looking forward to performing at this.

Have a great week everybody.   🙂
