Primary 3/4 Blog Week Ending 22.12.17

Dear All

This week in literacy we wrote letters to Santa, Rudolph and Cupid. We have been reading a Hamish McHaggis book called ‘The Skirmish at Stirling’. It was about William Wallace. We got our own personal dictionary and we write any words we have learned to spell in it. We edited our literacy jotters and gave feedback about what our next steps are.

In numeracy we checked our place value, estimation and symmetry assessments to see what we still need to learn.

In health and wellbeing we did PE with Mrs Reid and did some dancing and played Christmas games. We did two plays. The P3’s acted the ‘The Penguin’s Lost Scarf’ and the P4’s acted ‘The Lonely Snowman’. It was fun! Everyone enjoyed acting or watching and they were both good. We had our Christmas parties this week. We really liked them! They were awesome! It was really noisy! We had ice cream. We put up a little Christmas tree in the class. Thank you to Calan’s gran for letting us borrow it.

Hope you have a good holiday, a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas from P2A

This week we finished our snow globe stories. We used our plans to write the middle and ending of the story. We all used some lovely describing words and came up with some very imaginative ideas.

We were also helping Miss Mudd with some of the corridor displays. We used cotton wool to make clouds for outside our classroom. We made flowers to go around our door and made a banner saying ‘We Grow Together’.

On Tuesday we went to P6 to play some of the board games they had made. We had a great time testing them out and we even gave our feedback to them when we had finished. We then played Sumdog with our buddies and practised logging on independently.

On Wednesday we learnt the ’Twelve days of Christmas’ song. We looked at the names of the numbers in the song. We worked in groups to solve some word problems that Miss Mudd had made up to try and stretch our brains! In the afternoon we did a lesson linked to our Christmasaurus story. In the story some of the characters talk about how they feel different and don’t fit in. We did some discussion based on being unique and special. We then completed sentences to show how special we really are. We wanted to celebrate our differences!

On Thursday we had our Christmas Disco. We danced the afternoon away and Miss Mudd was pretty impressed with our creative dance moves. We also wrote some elf rhymes based on the story of the Christmasaurus. In the book, the elves all speak in rhyme. We played a game of ‘pass the rhyme’ then worked in groups to pick a subject card and write our own mini rhymes.

On Friday we joined P2B for a Christmas craft morning and made Christmas tree cards.

What a busy term it has been! Thank you all so much for your support and help. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and New Year. Be safe!

Love

Miss Mudd and P2A

News From This Week…

We are now just one sleep away from the end of an extremely busy two terms at Springfield and Bonnytoun.  As children get ready for their visit from Santa, here are the happenings of the last week or so in school and nursery…

Our nursery cherubs were amazing as they performed their ‘Easy Cheesy Nativity’ last week. All children sat beautifully through the performance, joining in the songs and actions and they were a credit to the staff and their parents. Thank you to Mrs T and all of the nursery team who continue to do a brilliant job.

We held a very successful Learning Showcase last Wednesday with many parents enjoying a coffee with us and a wander around the classrooms in school to view the different learning. Some parents even managed to catch some Scottish dancing in the gym hall!

Here are some pictures from our last assembly and the pupils who received our new Vison, Values and Aims awards. Well done to you all!

Thank so much to everyone who came to our church service on Tuesday night of this week. It was a beautiful service and our school choir , instrumentalists and all of the children who read aloud did us proud. Thank you to Mrs Hogg, Miss Prince, Miss Craenor and Mrs Begarnie for helping with this service.

Have a wonderful Christmas everyone and we shall see you all back in school and nursery on Tuesday 9th January 2018.

Thank you so much for your support. It continues to be a pleasure to work with you all.

Love Miss Baillie xx⛄️🌟🎄💖

Festive Fun in P2/3

In Maths we have been learning about patterns and number sequences. We challenged ourselves to continue number patterns to and beyond 100.

In Literacy we wrote stories about Santa’s problem. We tried to include exclamation marks and question marks in our writing. We were given this story starter:

Everything was quiet at the North Pole until…

Waaaaaah!’ cried Santa, as loud as could be.

Mrs Claus came running out of the workshop.

‘Whatever is the matter?’ she asked, passing Santa her handkerchief.

‘I… I… I think Christmas will be ruined!’ Santa sobbed….

A.M’s story:

All the reindeers were playing in the dark then all of them got lost! Mrs Claus said, ‘how are we going to find them in time for Christmas?’

Santa said, ‘let’s blow the reindeer trumpet then they will come back!’

‘Well done’, said Mrs Claus. So Santa blew the trumpet 1…2…3… BRRRRRRP. Then all of the reindeers came galloping back.

J.B’s story:

‘Because I’m ill’ said Santa.

‘How?’ said Mrs Claus.

‘Well, there was no stuffing for the teddies, so I filled them with mince pies!’

‘How silly’, said Mrs Claus.

‘…Then I got hungry so I ate the teddies.’

‘WHAT?’ said Mrs Claus.

‘Oops’ said Santa. A couple of days later Santa woke up in hospital feeling much better just in time for Christmas.

Here are some photos of our Christmas crafts, we made penguins, 3D Christmas cards and holly wreaths.

We LOVED our Christmas party!

Have a Very Merry Christmas!

Warm up with a good book!

On Monday Miss Baillie took all of the infant children for a big ‘Winter Read’. They read the story ‘The Polar Bear Son – An Inuit Tale’.

The story is about a lonely old woman  who adopts and raises a polar bear as if he were her own son. The polar bear provides well for her and the villagers soon become jealous. They force him to leave his home but eventually a mother’s love conquers all and they are reunited together. This story is based on a traditional Inuit folktale.

The children have been asked to complete some work based on the book to display in our infant winter wonderland corridor.

P6A Weekly Blog

Our week started off with a visit from Mrs Millar, from the Scottish Parliament outreach program. Mrs Millar came along to our school on Tuesday morning, and consolidated what we have been learning  about. We were all placed into parties and we elected our leaders. We had to present a manifesto, debate and vote. It was a lot of fun, where we learned a lot more about the ins  and outs of the Scottish Parliament.

We’ve been continuing with our Big Writing adventures in literacy this week. We worked with our partners to up level a radio broadcast, we discussed what was important in a radio broadcast to make sure that it has an impact on our listeners. Later in the week, we worked with our partners to write our radio broadcast, and this week we will begin to record them.

In numeracy this week, we worked on balancing equations and equations that are greater than and less than. Next we are going to have a look at letters and symbols that can be used to represent a missing number.

1 + 2 this week we learned some Spanish. We learned how to greet someone and how to ask and tell them our names. We also created some vocabulary key cards that we can use throughout the year, to help us to remember.

With Christmas on its way, we learned about why we celebrate Christmas, and that it is not just about what we receive but most importantly what we give. Christmas is about spending time with the people we care about and also about random acts of kindness. It was also the start oh Hanukkah on the 12th December, we learned what Hanukkah was all about and how and why it is celebrated.

We have been reading our Novel, Wonder. The author has written a book that has captivated all of us and we are looking forward to watch the movie on Thursday.

Last week to go before our Christmas break, we going to make this the best week yet.

P4 Class

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! The P4s have worked extra hard this week as they have been given the responsibility of collecting, sorting and delivering christmas cards to all the classess in Springfield Primary.   On Thursday, Miss Durano and some P4 children had their christmas dinner together in the lunch hall.  It was quite a novelty!

Here is a list of lessons the P4s have explored this week:

  • Literacy-  Revision lesson on plural forms of a word.  Children were able to indentify when to add -s or -es to change from singular to plural form.  The children also engaged in imaginative writing wherein they have to write a diary (Christmas themed).  The children also played a game of story- telling where they worked as a team to create their own storyline.  For spelling, the children learnt to spell words with the sound pattern -ou.
  • Numeracy- Mental Math focused on adding doubles and and near doubles.  The children learnt to add 2 digit with 2 digit numbers with bridging.  Towards the end of the week, the P4s moved on to adding 2 digit numbers with 3 digit numbers( with and without bridging).  This lesson also reiterated the children’s understanding of place value as they had to add numbers which belong in the same place value.
  • Health and Wel-being focus was on kindness.  “How would you fell if…” was the question the P4s had to reflect upon.  Children also spoke about what are the ways they can deal with bullying and unkind acts.

Thank you to all the parents who managed to join us on the Family Learning Showcase. It was a pleasure to see all of you!

Many thanks,

Miss DUrano

P7b Weekly Blog

It has been another exciting week in P7b. On Monday we started off by creating a Christmas haiku poem. We have now come to the end of our poetry block of writing. This was followed by guided reading and continuing with our group novel studies. After break we got into our enterprise groups and figured out the gross and net profit that we had achieved from the Christmas Fayre. In total we made £1,186 and £851 of this goes towards our end of year Leavers 2018 trip. Our P.E session of Monday was basketball in the Community Wing and it was really fun. We were playing small sided games to demonstrate the skills we have been developing since October.

On Tuesday we started off our brilliant day by reading in our groups while the rest of us started our reading tasks and completed our grammar and punctuation. We have been using connectives, they are used to join up sentences and extend/vary the length of them. We were asked to up-level our connectives, for example; meanwhile, additionally and furthermore. Near the end of the day we started on algebra in maths, we were talking about number machines. The very last thing we did on Tuesday was practising Last Christmas by Wham! and Feliz Navidad, a Spanish Christmas song, for Carols Around the Tree next week. Please come along and watch us perform at 10.25am on Friday!

Then on Wednesday we had more algebra. We tackled some problem solving questions with a partner and these were from the GCSE tests from England, some of the questions were really tricky but we enjoyed the challenge and were pleased when we got to the correct answer. Later on in the day, we had science with Mrs Tulloch, some of our parents came in to see us learning about chemical and physical changes.

On Thursday morning we went to Midlothian Snowsports Centre in Edinburgh for our second skiing session. We’re all getting better each week and can’t wait for the next one. It was snowing all morning and made us feel Christmassy! After skiing we had our Christmas lunch in Mrs Gordon’s classroom. Both classes were here so it was packed, but the food was great. Thank you Jessie and the kitchen ladies.

Then on Friday, we had singing practise in assembly and after break we had committees . The Sports Committee were tidying and reorganising the P.E cupboard as it was a bit of a mess!

We hope you all have a nice weekend.

P7a’s Weekly News

This week we finished our block on fractions within numeracy by doing an assessment. This will help identify an areas we still need to work on. We then started work with percentages. Mrs Gordon was delighted that a few children recognised that “percent” means per 100, and that cent in French is 100!

In literacy we wrote diary entries from the point of view of an animal, plant or person living in the Amazon Rainforest or Brazil. We had to really put ourselves into our characters shoes, and do some research as to their life style to ensure it was authentic.

In French we designed our own Christmas jumpers and then wrote a few sentences to describe them. We had some lovely designs and learnt some fabulous words like robin – rouge-gorge (red throat) again some links to the English language.

We also started Spanish by working out what we knew, counting to 20, greetings and asking and saying our name. We found some links with masculine/feminine endings that we understood due to our work on that in French lessons.

In IDL we are at the end of our focus on Brazil, and we were very lucky to have some parents and grandparents join us for the learning showcase on Wednesday. We did an apprentice style activity where each group had to choose their team leader and then complete a Scotland/Brazil comparison task. There were a few twists along the way, and each section  was timed to add an element of urgency. At the end each team presented a “persuasive presentation on either Brazil or Scotland” trying to convince the audience to visit. The children did a great job, and some of the visitors commented on how well they gave each other feedback! Our peer assessment is working !

We had our second session of skiing on Thursday at Hillend, where we had real snow, making it more authentic! Everyone really pushed themselves and did so well. After an exhausting few hours, it was time to get back for our Christmas lunch. Lunch for 62 was served in our classroom, it was a bit of a squeeze, but very tasty!
