P2A

It has been another busy week in P2A where we have worked hard and been resilient when facing new concepts in Maths.

In Numeracy and Mathematics we have been learning about numbers to 100. We have looked at what the words ‘before’, ‘after’, ‘less’ and ‘more than’ mean. Using this knowledge and by practising our counting (forwards and backwards) we have been able to complete problems which use these words. We especially enjoyed using the ‘Splat Square’ as a class on the board to help us. It makes a funny noise when you press a number! We have also been helping each other out when some of us have found a question challenging. Miss Muir was really pleased to see this and the resilience we have had to overcome these challenges.

In Literacy we have been learning the digraphs ‘nk’, ‘ng’, ‘ou’ and ‘ow’. We have used the magnetic board on the Promethean board as a class for sounding out words.

We read the Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch and loved that the lunch was put on a zip line to the lighthouse for Mr Grinling. Although, the seagulls kept eating his sandwiches so we thought of ingredients to put in a sandwich to keep the pesky seagulls away. We thought of mud, sand and slime just to name a few! We then wrote instructions of how to make our sandwiches.

During story and milk we read a story called ‘One Magical Day’. We enjoyed hearing about all the different animals on the farm and what they did when they woke up in the morning to when they fell asleep. Some of our favourite animals were in the book! We changed the tuff tray with farm animals who were in the story. We liked playing with them, pretending we were at a farm.

In R.M.E this week with Mrs Bergarnie we learned about the Hindu Festival of Raksha Bandan. This is a special day that is celebrated by lots of children, especially by brothers and sisters. We made cards and bracelets to give to our brothers and sisters. We enjoyed drawing and colouring in our cards and making the bracelets with bells.

We also met our P6 Pals on Thursday afternoon where we played games outside in the playground. We were very happy that it didn’t rain and stayed dry for us!

Thank you for reading our post and we hope you have a lovely September weekend.

P7b

This week our P7b class demonstrated confidence in tackling learning experiences offered to us.

For Numeracy and Maths, we learnt to calculate the area of right angle triangles and composite shapes.  Then we revised on our multiplication and division strategies.  We also practiced finding and simplifying equivalent fractions.

For Literacy, we read a poem.  We used our inference skills in order to comprehend what the read.  We researched the importance  of the Amazon rainforest to the rest of the world.  Using our netbooks, we  searched for the causes and effects of deforestation.  Then we wrote our persuasive essay on Brazil’s deforestation problem.

For Modern Languages, we counted from 1 to 20.  We played a game of bingo using French words too.

For HWB, we looked at how drug misuse and we learned how they affect the human body.

Have a great weekend everyone!

An Indian story in P4B

We read “A Pair of Twins”” by Kavitha Mandana and Nayantara Surendranath and although it was quite a difficult story, we managed some very good recounts of the story and used the elephants in the story as a stimulus for our art work. We created some wonderful decorated elephants. Brilliant work P4B.
In Numeracy we have continued to work on higher numbers – more and less and now understand what these 2 symbols mean . Some of us have also begun to work on estimating. We have finished off our block on symmetry by creating symmetrical pictures. Again some brilliant designs.
On Monday the sports leaders from P7 took us for team games and we really enjoyed it. We have also continued practicing our badminton skills and quite a few of us are now consistently hitting the shuttlecock – sometimes in the right direction.

We have been comparing the climate in Scotland to that in India or to be precise Linlithgow compared to New Delhi and have certainly noticed the difference.
Enjoy the holiday weekend.Hope the sun shines and see you all next Wednesday.

Hawaii Here We Come! P3A

We began the week getting our new homework and working on our spelling skills at active stations.  We also got new reading books and have enjoyed reading them throughout the week.  We have begun to have some discussion about what we have read.  As a group,  we can chose to be either Word Wizards, Punctuation People, Character Cruzaders or Setting Soldiers – this gives our reading session a focus for discussion.  Most of the groups chose to be Setting Soldiers this week.

In Numeracy we have continued our work on place value, working with larger numbers.  We had active stations and completed many activities to allow us to practise.  We really like the place value basket ball game that is on the topmarks website – it’s free and easily accessible if anyone wants to play it at home:   www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/place-value-basketball

In outer maths we learned more about symmetry.  We were deciding whether objects or pictures were symmetrical and explaining the reasons for our answers.  We also worked on identifying lines of symmetry.  We enjoyed a symmetry hunt outside too.

We have also been working on capital letters and full stops as Mrs Kennedy had noticed that some of us are forgetting them as we write – some very long sentences 😉  We are now getting better at remembering capital letters in the correct places but it is tricky to decide when to use a full stop and begin a new sentence.  We will continue to work on this.

In PE we continued to develop our skills for benchball – different types of throw this week.  We have begun to think about what kind of throw to use depending on where our teammates are on the court.

We got together with P3B for a lesson on Islands on Tuesday.  We suggested quite few islands that would be good for our geography topic.  After a vote it was decided that Hawaii will be the island that we learn more about and compare to Scotland.  If anyone has anything Hawaiin please let us know, if you’ve been maybe you could tell us about it?

Our assembly this Friday was a little different as we all attended a House Assembly for our own houses.  The P7s who would like to be House Captains spoke to us then we voted for them.  Lots of voting this week!

Enjoy the weekend, P3A and Mrs Kennedy

6.9.19 Primary 5/6

Numeracy : this week we have been learning about units, tens all the way up to millions. We were ordering and sequencing them.  We are going to continue with this next week. In maths we are learning about 3D shapes and their properties.  There was lots of maths vocabulary we had to learn and next week we are going to cut up the shapes to investigates their nets.

Literacy: We are still completing our signs for our class library.

We got our reading books out and the stories look good.

We started homework this for spelling, our learning grids and reading.

For writing, we completed stories about “The Waking Giant”

IDL: We started a river fact file with Mrs McVay and will continue to work on it next week

In science we have been disussing global warming and different types of energy. We are going to make paper helicopters next week and discuss the potential and kinetic energy changes.

Camembert the Bear’s visit to P1B

Another busy week in P1, we are learning so much and making lots of progress.

In Phonics we have be learning the sounds p and n. We learned the Jolly phonics song, found the letters on magnetic letter boards, drew pictures of things that begin with p and n and had a go at forming the letters.

p – down the pirate’s plait and over the pirate’s face

n- down Nobby, back up Nobby and over his net

We even had a go at writing some words using the sounds – Mrs Bell was very impressed!

In Numeracy we have been learning about the numbers 2, 3 and 4. We found forming 2 and 3 quite tricky but we will keep practising. We also learned about 2D shapes – circles, squares, triangles and rectangles. We went on a shape hunt around our classroom:

On  Thursday we met Camembert the bear who is visiting us from France. He was a little bit shy as he doesn’t speak any English. We had to speak to him in French! We learned  how to say ‘hello’ and ‘my name is…’

Some photos of outdoor fun, reading to our friends and writing our names:

Admin for next week:

Thank you to those who handed homework folders in on Thursday. Please send homework folders in if you haven’t already so that we can give out new sounds on Monday.

Have a lovely weekend!

Primary 6 – w/e 6th September 2019

This week in maths we have looked at formal methods of multiplication and division, with us all choosing to challenge ourselves and make our brains grow.

In PE we have developed our ball handling skills for basketball, playing games and completing drills and team activities.

We have decided on a theme for our assembly and begun to research facts and information on this.

In music we have begun to create a song, with instruments for our assembly, which is on the 20th September at 10am.

In science we created helicopters which showed the changes in energy that occur when they are launched – ask us about this!!

Homework has also been issued this week – due Tuesday and Wednesday.

Kind regards

Primary 6 and Mrs Kerr

First Full week in P4B

Our week started off with a visit from the S.S.P.C.A. We enjoyed playing board games finding animal homes and then we built owls and made them move. We had great fun.
In Numeracy, we have started our new jotters and have been revising numbers between 100 and 1000 and beyond. Looking at numbers before and after in 10’s, 50’s and 100’s. Our presentation in our jotters was very impressive.
In Literacy, we created an “Alphabet of Stuff”. This was related to our class novel”Fing” and we used our imagination to make up a list of things that our character Myrtle might want or thinks she might want!! Some great and funny ideas. We have also been looking at alliteration and how effective it can be, if used in our writing. We thought of some super sentences and some sensational short stories!!
We have drawn designs of our buildings and then we stuck them onto boxes to make 3D buildings. Great detail and they have made an interesting display outside our classroom.
In PE we have begun to learn the skills required to play badminton and really enjoyed it.
In RME with Mrs.Beganie, we have begun to learn about the religion of Judaism. So a very busy first full week. Thank you to those who came to “Meet the Teacher.” It was nice to see both old and new faces. Hope you’re all enjoying the weekend. Photos to follow.

P5 Weekly Blog

We’ve had another busy week as the children settle into P5. Here’s what we’ve been up to and what we are looking forward to next week…

Health and Wellbeing

We continued working on our movement skills and spatial awareness in P.E this week. The size of ball increased as the session went on. We began by following hand-clap patterns and sequences with a tennis ball to improve our hand-eye coordination before introducing the basketballs and working with a partner. We tested our reflexes against different opponents before mirroring their movements and varying the ways in which we exchange the ball.

This week, we were also lucky enough to have a surprise visit from the SSPCA. We were spoken to about the importance of being kind towards animals and heard stories about some unusual call-outs made by staff. The session finished with a coding exercise where we were tasked with building a programmable owl which flapped its wings and moved its head. Unfortunately we weren’t able to make Oscar fly…

Technologies

In the upper school this term we have a particular focus on building and construction, mimicking that going on around the school currently as our toilets are upgraded. We’ve got real-life materials, Spheros, K’nex and Lego workstations to choose from. On Wednesday afternoon we tried some K’nex challenge cards in small groups and created our own unique designs. We had strands of DNA, noughts and crosses, cars and even a wheelbarrow!

Literacy and English

The genre for writing this week was creative and imaginative. Mr Logan introduced our word bank and recapped on the important features of a story before showing us an image of Japan. Our stories had to use this setting but the characters and plot were left to us. The standard of writing was incredibly high and Mr Logan was impressed with the ambitious range of VCOP in our work.

Problem Solving

We’ve been taking part in varied problem solving and team building exercises over the first couple of weeks to improve our teamwork and communication skills. Our final challenge of the week was the classic ‘Egg Drop Challenge’. All 8 groups were given a minimal amount of resources including tape, newspaper, string and a plastic cup to create a protective capsule for their egg. Out of 8 groups, 4 managed to keep their egg intact after it was thrown into the air in the back playground on Friday. You’ll see their proud wee faces below, well done everyone!

Achievements

Finally, a couple of achievements from this week to mention…

  • O and S have been attending gymnastics sessions in Linlithgow and received a number of medals for their efforts! Well done girls, Mr Logan is really proud of you both!
  • E has been demonstrating her creativity at home, constructing Mt. Fuji and a Japanese building using Lego. Super job, E!

Coming Up

  • 2.9.19 – Japan IDL learning context begins
  • 4.9.19 – Swimming assessment at Xcite Lgow, leave 12.15 and return 15.15
  • 13.9.19 – ‘Responsible’ assembly
  • 16.9.19 & 17.9.19 – Holidays
  • 18.9.19 – Liaise with Leadership from 16.00-17.00

It was great to meet you all on Wednesday evening, have a relaxing weekend!

P5 and Mr Logan

P7B’s First week back

Hi everyone, this week has been a great first week in P7B!

On Monday we did our spelling test to see what level we’re at in our spelling. We also did our leadership talks explaining what role we wanted. We made our envelopes for the time capsule and measured our feet size, hand size and height! (by NG and SP)

On Tuesday we did Daily Rigour.  This gave us quite a challenge.

This week we learned about the work of Romero Britto.  A Brazillian Pop artist.  We had a go at recreating his work in class.

We created our ” Kindness Wall” this week. The purpose of which is to send out positive and encouraging notes to our peers. To boost self esteem, we talked about how we see ourselves and how others see us.  Some of us were surprised to know that there are personal attributes  which we neglect to appreciate.  Our friends help us appreciate these through their messages.
