Fruit fun in Primary 1B

We have been getting stuck into our Handa’s Surprise topic this week.  Thank you very much for all the fruit on Tuesday, we made our bar chart and apples were the clear favourite, followed closely by strawberries.  We all helped to make the chart by drawing our favourite fruit and sticking it on.  We then had a good look at what the chart told us and learned to read it.

We enjoyed eating our fruit together while we had our milk or water and listened to a story.  We also tasted some of the fruit from Handa’s Surprise, the mango and papaya were popular.

We have had lots of other fruit activities this week, we investigated floating and sinking with real fruit in the water tray, playing with fruit in the role play area, making fruit from play dough and looking at books about fruit and healthy eating in the library.

On Tuesday we went outside for PE, we are focusing on ‘Better Movers and Thinkers’ at the moment.  This week we were concentrating on moving our bodies well, controlling it and using and sharing space.  We also practised some throwing and catching ball skills, whilst standing still and moving.

On Thursday we were outside again, writing number 8.  We used chalk and stones to write with and skipping ropes to practise the formation of an 8 – which can be quite tricky!

Then we gathered leaves and took them back inside to make 8s using them.  There was super counting going on whilst we were collecting the leaves too 🙂

We worked hard to make our 8s and there was good discussion and thinking about the shape of an 8 and how it is formed when writing.

We also won the peg challenge again!  Extra breaktime on Friday was good fun! Have a good weekend everyone.

P2/3 are having a hoot!

This week in P2/3 we have been learning how to organise data into a venn diagram. We worked in teams to show the similarities and differences between Scotland and Maui.

We found out that some fruits such as tomatoes can grow here and in Maui. Pomegrante trees grow in Maui – we all tried some pomegranate seeds. Lots of us loved the taste!

In writing this week we listened to The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark. We each decided on a new character to make Plop feel better about the dark. We drew a storyboard and shared our stories with a partner. Next week we will be writing the sentences in our storyboards.

While it’s warm enough we are doing as much learning outside as we can. We enjoyed playing number bond bingo outside on the benches.

Here are some photos of our outdoor play this week:

This week’s star of the week is Rebecca. She has been my special helper this week and what a fantastic helper she was! Rebecca is always kind and helpful.

If you’re out and about on an autumnal walk this weekend, please could you collect dry leaves for our art lesson on Monday. We are making leaf collage owls to go with our owl stories. Here’s one I made earlier…

Happy leaf picking!

Springfield Rugby Stars

This week we started our after school Rugby club. All of the children showed great potential and were keen to develop their skills. We worked on passing and receiving the ball and communicating to our team. Here are a few pictures to show what we were up to!

Miss Baillie’s Literacy Competition Assemblies…

We had two very special Literacy themed assemblies last Friday to inspire us all to become writers. Miss Baillie held an ‘Owl Babies’ story-telling session and  invited all of the children in primaries 1 to 3 to write about the Owl Babies story.

The older children talked about what Autumn in Linlithgow looks and feels like and were asked to contribute a piece of writing to our new ‘Autumn in Linlithgow’ display which features in our main corridor.

Miss Baillie stressed that everyone can learn to be a great writer and that a positive attitude towards writing is the most important thing. We learned that at every changing minute, we have the chance to change or attitudes towards anything in life, including our ability to write.

Miss Baillie has challenged all children to complete their writing within the next two weeks. There will be prizes for the best efforts! What an exciting way to kick off our efforts in writing this term!

News of the children who receive prizes will follow in the next few weeks…

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

Love Miss Baillie xx 🍂 ❤️

P1B begin to learn about Handa.

On Wednesday Abbie, Matthew, Neve and Euan made some new dough for us with our lovely parent helper, Mrs Woolsey.

On Thursday our tough tray had something different in it – it was set up like a scene from the book ‘Handa’s Surprise’.  We have played really well with the objects in the tray and are very good at putting it back to how it shoudl be when we are finished!  We have made up lots of different stories and games using the sheds, animals and pond.  We will be taking a closer look at this story over the next few weeks.

Thomas and Finlay enjoyed looking at one of the books next to the tray, it was all about African animals.

We have been making the number six it lots of different ways.

As it was a short week we have had a revision of the sounds we have looked at over the last couple of weeks, practising our word building skills.

Gregor won the Enjoy-a-ball trophy and brought it in to show us.  Well done Gregor! 🙂

We’ve fitted in quite a lot in 2 and half days!  Happy weekend.  From P1B and Mrs Kennedy

Fun in the sun in P2/3

We made the most of the sunshine on Wednesday and went outside for PE. We enjoyed trying to beat Miss Prince at a race!

In Writing we wrote postcards while on our imaginary holiday to Maui. We had a go at self assessing our writing using traffic lights. We all have a target to work towards in our next writing lesson.

In Maths we continued our work on shape, we can now confidently identify and name pentagons, hexagons and octagons.

We are really interested in the Pacific Ocean around Maui so today we made a tropical underwater corner. Our parent helper Mrs Biggar helped us to make the most sparkly, glittery tropical fish you have ever seen!

New reading books and homework will go home on Monday.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Short and sweet.

All children returned back to school refreshed and rearing to learn after a lovely long weekend.  Although we only had a three day week, we were definitely very busy.

I numeracy this week, we completed some work on rounding up to 7 digit numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000’s. We have shown great understanding on rounding through a variety of activities. Next week we will be using our rounding knowledge to solve addition and subtraction problems. On Thursday Mrs Kerr joined us in the classroom to take part in our weekly Number talk. Number talks is helping us to improve our mental maths by using a variety of chosen strategies, we get the opportunity to show our understanding by sharing our strategies with the class. Mrs Kerr was very impressed as we were able to solve 3 digit number added to a 3 digit number  mentally. Majority of us preferred to use partitioning as our strategy and we all agreed it was the most effective strategy to use at the time. I wonder what strategies we will use next week, perhaps rounding up or down?

Continuing with our class novel, Wonder , we learned  how to create a balanced argument. We wrote reasons for the main character, August should attend school. Through our writing we learned that you can not just give a reason but you also need to give evidence to support your reasoning. We really had to use our memories to gather evidence from the story.  We have also been working on our editing skills, we worked through a passage and identified the punctuation errors. We never realized how important punctuation is, and how the meaning of the sentence can change if not used correctly . A funny example Mrs Matos shared with us was, ‘Let’s eat grandma. Let’s eat, grandma’. To finish off Literacy this week we looked at Homophones, there, their and they’re….ask us if we can give you example to identify the different meanings.

We continued to use the Atlas to help us identify the different countries in the UK. We needed to identify and label the countries. Next week we going to look at the main features in Scotland and we will be labelling them on our maps.

We have entered into the Gap UK T-shirt design competition. The competition is linked to our Novel, Wonder. We needed to design a T-shirt that shows our idea of what Kindness means. The exciting part is if we win, out T-shirts get printed and sold in Gap stores to raise money for an anti-bullying charity.  Mrs Matos was very impressed with our designs, let’s hope the judges will be too.

P7b Health and Wellbeing Assembly

P7b led a fantastically informative assembly on the components of health and wellbeing last Friday. We learned more about how to stay mentally, socially, emotionally and physically healthy though a presentation and songs.  Thank you so much to all pupils, Mr Logan and Mr Slater, our lovely PGDE student,  for their hard work in putting this assembly together.  We are passionate about ensuring that every child in Springfield feels good about themselves and knows that they are worthwhile as individuals. Everyone is special and everyone is unique.

Have a lovely holiday weekend everyone,

Love Miss Baillie xxx
