Festive Fun in P2/3

In Maths we have been learning about patterns and number sequences. We challenged ourselves to continue number patterns to and beyond 100.

In Literacy we wrote stories about Santa’s problem. We tried to include exclamation marks and question marks in our writing. We were given this story starter:

Everything was quiet at the North Pole until…

Waaaaaah!’ cried Santa, as loud as could be.

Mrs Claus came running out of the workshop.

‘Whatever is the matter?’ she asked, passing Santa her handkerchief.

‘I… I… I think Christmas will be ruined!’ Santa sobbed….

A.M’s story:

All the reindeers were playing in the dark then all of them got lost! Mrs Claus said, ‘how are we going to find them in time for Christmas?’

Santa said, ‘let’s blow the reindeer trumpet then they will come back!’

‘Well done’, said Mrs Claus. So Santa blew the trumpet 1…2…3… BRRRRRRP. Then all of the reindeers came galloping back.

J.B’s story:

‘Because I’m ill’ said Santa.

‘How?’ said Mrs Claus.

‘Well, there was no stuffing for the teddies, so I filled them with mince pies!’

‘How silly’, said Mrs Claus.

‘…Then I got hungry so I ate the teddies.’

‘WHAT?’ said Mrs Claus.

‘Oops’ said Santa. A couple of days later Santa woke up in hospital feeling much better just in time for Christmas.

Here are some photos of our Christmas crafts, we made penguins, 3D Christmas cards and holly wreaths.

We LOVED our Christmas party!

Have a Very Merry Christmas!

Warm up with a good book!

On Monday Miss Baillie took all of the infant children for a big ‘Winter Read’. They read the story ‘The Polar Bear Son – An Inuit Tale’.

The story is about a lonely old woman  who adopts and raises a polar bear as if he were her own son. The polar bear provides well for her and the villagers soon become jealous. They force him to leave his home but eventually a mother’s love conquers all and they are reunited together. This story is based on a traditional Inuit folktale.

The children have been asked to complete some work based on the book to display in our infant winter wonderland corridor.

A quick recap of the past two weeks – we have fitted in quite a lot!

Last week we performed our nativity.  The children were very proud of themselves and I’m certain you were proud of them too.  Here we are before the Thursday night performance – it was great fun coming to school at night!

On Friday we had our stall at the Christmas Fair.  For our enterprise task we made salt dough Christmas tree decorations and reindeer lollipops.  We sold out very quickly and raised around £50 which we have to spend on our class.

This week we have been very busy making snowmen for our corridor display.  We tried out lots of different ways to create our pictures.  Some were quite tricky but we kept trying and didn’t give up, showing a lot of resilience.  It was worth it – the artwork is fantastic, well done everyone for helping to make our winter corridor look so good.

For our first snowmen, we were only allowed to rip  paper and glue it down to make a picture.  It was difficult to make the different shapes we needed and we had to use our hands carefully and tear slowly.

For our second snowmen, we drew around round objects and stuck cotton wool and felt on to decorate them, cutting the felt into the shapes we wanted.

For our last snowmen we used potatoes and white paint to print the bodies and then painted faces, arms and clothing.

N and A helped to make the big snowman.  They painted him, filled his body with polystyrene and designed his clothes from off-cuts of material.

Here is the finished result, we love it!  Please have a closer look the next time you are in.

We had some visitors on Wednesday for our ‘Learning Showcase’ afternoon.  The children certainly showed off their learning at the different activities, all relating to what we have been covering over the past few weeks.  We had a full classroom and all the children were eager to show their skills, they were very much on task too.  Thank you for visiting and well done P1B for being so enthusiastic.

We have been continuing our phonics and numeracy work.  Sounds ‘j’ and ‘v’ this week and number bonds for 8 and 9.

I can’t believe it’s one week until the holidays!  Next week we will have Santa’s workshop in our home corner, with toy designing and a wrapping station.  We will be enjoying lots of other Christmas activities too, including our party on Thursday and our family church service on Tuesday evening.

In Literacy we have been writing stories which started off with Santa having a problem. The children had to think about what the problem might be and how it could be solved, so that Santa could do his very important job on Christmas Eve. Some fantastic ideas. We have also done some work on my favourite subject – CAPITAL letters and full stops. We’ll get there.

We have been doing Wintery pictures of Snowy Owls for our Winter Wonderland display in the Infant area.

Thank you to all those who attended our Showcase on Wednesday. The children really enjoyed showing the adults what they were learning. Our activities were based on our class novel – “The Christmasaurus”.

In Maths we continue to work on subtraction.

The children have been learning some Scottish Dancing in P.E.

Have a good weekend everyone. Photos to follow.

Christmasaurus fun

Literacy

In phonics we have been learning our consonant blends. Miss Mudd’s group have been looking at pr, fr, gr, cr, br. We worked in partners to build words with our magnetic boards. We continued with our class novel ‘The Christmasaurus’ and set up stations with different activities for our learning showcase. We enjoyed having our special adults in to see us for the learning showcase. We used description from the story to draw the North Pole Ranch,  made Christmas lists and added up different amounts of money, designed and described new elves for Santa and used snow to practise writing our tricky words.

This week we also started our ‘Trapped in a Snow Globe’ imaginative writing pieces. Miss Mudd took photos of us pretending to be trapped and we used chalk and black paper to create our snow scene. We had to use our imagination to help us with our writing. We used our senses to help us describe the setting and used talking partners to help us come up with a mini story.

Numeracy

In numeracy we have been looking at subtraction stories for 11, 12, 13 and 14. We used our knowledge of addition to help us with our take away sums. We have learnt how to use a number line to subtract and how to use the Numicon. We have been doing a Christmas maths challenge each day to develop our ability to talk about our strategies. We were also applying our addition and subtraction knowledge to Christmas maths problems and we had to identify which operation we had to use.

Other

We made Christmas cards for our families this week. We used finger prints to create wonderful Christmas pictures. Well done to BW for moving up a group at his martial arts class. He also got a new tab. We are very proud of him for working hard to achieve this. A huge well done to all of P2A for winning class of the week again! Miss Mudd has seen a big improvement in behaviour and this has been recognised by other staff members too.

Have a lovely weekend

Primary 6B – Scottish Parliament Outreach Visit

Mrs Miller from the Scottish Parliament Outreach Team, visited us in class this morning.

She shared lots of information about the parliament and allowed us to explore different issues using an interactive voting system.

We had a mock election, with Party Leaders delivering a manifesto.

Well done to the ‘Save the Earth Party’ who won our Election.

We also had a debate, with the mace present. Our Presiding Officer chaired the debate extremely well and the chamber voted that we should not have one hour of PE every day.

Pupil Achievements…

Firstly for this week, a massive ‘well done’ to our school choir for learning our new school song! It is just amazing and you will all love it when it is performed for the first time at our Family Carol Service are St. Michael’s on the 19th. Thank you so much to Miss Prince and Mrs Hogg for writing the song and for getting all children ‘performance ready.’ You are all stars!

Here are some other pupil achievements:

R in P3 said her Brownie Promise recently and here she is with her certificate!

Here are a group of P2s with super Xmas writing:

Congratulations to C in P5 for continuing to perform well in football and to B who is also in P5. B recently gained her next belt in karate. A great effort from both!

News over the past two weeks…

We have had another couple of busy weeks at Springfield and Bonnytoun. The Christmas season is now well and truly upon us and the children are beginning to get very excited about the fun that lies ahead.

Last Friday we had a special assembly focusing on the GIRFEC Wellbeing Indicator of ‘being nurtured.’ We spoke about how we do our best to ensure that every pupil at Springfield and Bonnytoun feels nurtured and cared for. Jessie even got a shout out for the nutritious food that she feeds to all of our little tummies each day! We are grateful to you Jessie and all of your team!

Our certificate winners from last week are shown below as well as two birthday girls from P1. Being five years old is such fun!

This week we were busy decorating our school and church Xmas trees with all of the decorations that pupils have made. Thank you so much to all mums and dads who helped their child to make a decoration. If you have had the chance to go to St. Michael’s to view our trees then I am sure that you will agree that they are beautiful. There is something very heart-warming about seeing children’s decorations hung on a tree at  Christmas-time. I was very proud of my two little helpers who helped with the trees. Thanks you girls for your help!

Here is a picture from our P1 and P2 Nativity. Again, we were all so proud of our wonderful children. They are all little stars! Thank you so much to all of the adults who helped to make this year’s performance a great success. We do hope that you enjoyed it if you came along!

A massive thank you to all of our PTA who helped to organise a fantastic Xmas Fayre  yesterday. A huge amount of money was raised for our school and this will be carefully spend to benefit all pupils.

More news coming next week…

Kind wishes and many thanks for your continued support,

Miss Baillie xxx❄️

Primary 6B – 8th December 2017

This week, Primary 6B have completed comic strips showing the feelings and emotions of Via (a character from our class novel ‘Wonder’). I’m sure you’ll agree that these look great!

As part of our RME, we have been looking at Christmas Traditions. We created our own Christingles and explored the significance of each part as we made them.

Our art this week has involved working with oil pastels and water colours to create toucans. These images show the pupils hard at work on this project.

We are looking forward to our outreach visit next week from the team at the Scottish Parliament – with lots to learn there too!

SP outreach visit

Have a lovely weekend,

Nativity Week

Most of the week we have been doing our Nativity Performances. The children have been fantastic and have sung their little hearts out. I was very proud of them as I’m sure you all were. Very well done P2B, you deserve a big pat on the back.

In Maths we have started on subtraction up to 20, although some children are working beyond this.

We have written our letters to Santa, so he’s going to very busy.

And today we have been selling our ribbon Christmas trees and tea lights. All of which were very successful. The children have also been making tree decorations for our school tree and the one in the church.

Have a good weekend everyone.
