Primary 3 – Week beg. 23rd April

Now that the class have finished learning about Scottish Inventors we are turning our attention to Plastic Pollution and what we can do to help with this world wide issue. The pupils had a very detailed discussion about pollution and created some key questions that they want to answer throughout the coming weeks. Some of these are:

How long does it take for plastic to break down?

Who invented plastic?

How can we help?

How much plastic is thrown in the sea every year?

We have been challenging ourselves further in maths by learning about equivalent fractions! We played a matching game to help our understanding. As part of our number talks we have been sharing our strategies for adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers. Next week we may even move on to 3 digit numbers!

Mrs Birkett has been doing lots of French with us and this week we were beginning to learn our numbers up to 31! We are having fun playing different games and doing activities to help us learn these confidently.

Primary 2B

Last week was another busy week in Primary 2B. The children were working on fractions – halves and quarters of both shapes and numbers.

In Literacy we looked at different sentence openers and how to make our sentences more interesting. Trying not to start sentences with the same words. Also  continuing sentences.

We’ve started looking at our favourite places in Linlithgow and designing posters to encourage people to come and visit them. The new area in our classroom is Springfield Tourist Information Centre and we are making leaflets    to give to our customers!!

In P.E we are continuing to practice our ball skills.

Fraction stations!

Hello from Springfield and Bonnytoun…

Another week has flown by in school and nursery. Our P6 and P7 children have been putting the final touches to their Lion King performance which will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings of next week. We are so looking forward to the show!

Yesterday, P3 held a super assembly about Scottish Inventors. We learned lots and enjoyed watching the children perform-what confidence they all showed!

Here are some birthday children from this week:

We have also had a number of pupil achievements…

A in P5 came to show me a picture of her as a flower-girl. A duty that she performed recently at a family wedding. How exciting for you A!

Some little P2/3 girls came along to let me listen to a song that they have created and recorded! Who says that we don’t teach music and digital literacy well at Springfield! Thank you to Miss Prince for her amazing talents in this area! How creative of you all too!

The lovely G in P5 shared her Girls Brigade success with me. I am so proud of you G! You always try your very best in all that you do!

U who is also in P5 was very excited about her recent dancing achievement. Congratulations to you U!

Finally, M in P1 came along to my office to show me his Roman ladder that he made during free play. I was most impressed!

We work really hard in school and nursery to allow every child to shine. I’ve been speaking to the children a lot this week about the fact that we all of our own strengths and how it is good to be unique and different. This is something that we should celebrate. We are all one of a kind!

Have a lovely weekend and enjoy the sunshine today,

Love Miss Baillie xxx💖🌞

P1B Life Cycles and Guess the Baby!

We began the week learning the ‘ew’ sound.  We wrote the words on plastic pockets and made words on our magnet boards, working in small groups to do these tasks.

We have begun to read number names up to twenty.  This was tricky to start with, but we have practised every day and we are getting pretty good.  We will keep going with this next week too.  In outer maths on Thursday we started to work on coin recognition.  There are some really good computer games for this and we played coin bingo and worked in small groups with Mrs Kennedy to complete our worksheets.  We have been putting on shows in our role play corner this week, we also have a ticket office with money so we can practise using the coins to pay for things and give change.

We began our mini topic on life cycles.  We learned about the life cycle of a frog and then human life cycles.  The baby photos were great – thank you! It was lots of fun trying to guess who each baby was.  We also had great discussions about what we couldn’t do as a baby but we can do now.  We really enjoyed thinking about what we will be like as teenagers and what we’d like to do when we are adults.

We have now completed our ‘Commotion in the Ocean’ wall display, with the addition of our ‘Rainbow Fish.’  We used celery and rainbow coloured paints to print colourful scales on our fish.  It’s looking really good and we have tried lots of different art techniques as we built up the display.

A last the weather has cottoned on to the fact that it is Spring!  We had a great time playing outside with P1A on Thursday.

Let’s hope the weather stays for the weekend and we can all get outside and enjoy it.

P3 Scottish Inventors!

This week has been super busy for the class! We have had our first Futsal lesson, which we really enjoyed, we have been outside litter picking to help keep our playground looking great and of course the preparation for our amazing assembly!

The whole class presented confidently and with enthusiasm at both assembly performances! They spoke clearly and all knew exactly what to do and when. It was brilliant to see their creativity shine through!

Well done everyone!

Mrs McVay

Badminton Success!

Congratulations to four Primary 7 boys who achieved success at the West Lothian Badminton competition yesterday. Well done in particular to C who was the singles winner for his age group.  We are very proud of you all boys! Another sporting achievement for Springfield! Hooray! What superstars our pupils are!

Back to school at Springfield and Bonnytoun…

We are all back to school and nursery refreshed after our Easter holiday.

We started off the week with an exciting addition to our school playground. One of our parents has kindly donated a lantern from the Edinburgh Zoo Chinese Lantern Festival which took place over the winter. We are now the proud owner of an amazing piece of art work made out of pure silk. The lantern takes the form of a flower and is brightening up our back playground whilst providing a stilumus for play.  Please take a look if your are passing. Thank you so much to Mrs Biggar and her helpers for getting the lantern to Springfield.  We are very grateful.

We held a further ‘wellbeing’assembly yesterday where we looked at what it means to be respected. We learned that to get respect from others then you need to give it. We understand the importance of being respectful at home, in school and around our community. We also learned how adults show respect for children around school. Did you know that both Springfield and Bonnytoun are UNICEF, Rights, Respecting Schools? We take children’s rights seriously and work hard to uphold these at all times.

We are currently undertaking some Health and Wellbeing self-evaluation work as a staff in both school and nursery.  As part of this, you will have been emailed a link to a parental survey which we’d love you to compete if you have time please. The children in school and nursery are also completing surveys around the Wellbeing Indicators. We want to know how healthy our children feel that they are and what we can do to improve this.

We will use all findings to make improvements to what we currently do in Health and Wellbeing and across our whole curriculum.

We have had a number of children in our infant department and nursery who have celebrated a birthday over the holidays. They are pictured below wearing their birthday stickers…

Here are our latest pupil achievements…

Well done to C in P3/4 for his success in Enjoy-a-Ball and also to the Stapleton siblings for their hard work in swimming!

Please see the end of this post for photographs.

Have a lovely weekend in the slightly, milder weather folks!

Love,

Miss Baillie xx🌷

Primary 2B

From before Easter – working out weights of different objects and our Easter egg hunt. Having fun relay races with P2A.

Welcome back everyone. Hope that you all had a good Easter break. The children have all settled back into school and work.

We are going to start writing a variety of stories this term and the children began with ” We were at the zoo, when an elephant escaped!”. Some fantastic ideas – well done Primary 2B. They have also been busy with dictionaries this week – learning how to put words in alphabetical order, where to find words in the dictionary, understanding what types of words they are and meanings of words.

In Numeracy we have been ordering numbers between 100 -1000, looking at numbers halfway between one and another and beginning to estimate.

With all the Spring flowers out, we have been learning how to draw daffodils and tulips. Some brilliant drawings.

The children so enjoyed “The Christmasaurus” that  we are reading another book by Tom Fletcher – “The Creakers”. They are already getting into it and enjoying it.

We have watched a” Living and Growing” DVD and talked about the differences between us.

So a busy start to the term. Have a good weekend everyone.

Week ending 13.4.18 5A

Hello and welcome back to everyone after our Easter holidays.

This week,  in number  we have started division sums by 1 digit. It has been quite challenging but with practice we are making good progress.

During our reading,  we talked about  literacy circle and chose from a wide  selection of novels.  We should be ready to start this in 2 weeks.

We copied our Babbington Plots onto aged paper ( which smelt of coffee). We wrote thank you letters to Mr Woodhouse, Elaine at the Queensferry Crossing and the Linlithgow Primary Palace guides.

In science we have started our new topic of light and had great fun investigating light sources and reflectors under cover. We took photos but all you can see is us under the sheets!

At last we got into the PE hall and were able to shoot at basketball – Harlem Globe Trotters look out.

We had music with Mrs Bain this week twice and really enjoyed the different activities.

P2/3 the Pizzeria

We’ve hit the ground running in P2/3 this week, class assembly rehearsals are in full swing and we have had a great time setting up our classroom as a pizzeria to play with fractions.

We know how to find halves, quarters and thirds of a shape and we are learning how to write fractions correctly. Next week we will be moving on to finding a fraction of an amount.

In Art we drew beautiful pictures of the ocean and sea creatures, you will get to see these at our assembly. We’ve also made a whale and a boat big enough to hold 5 David Attenboroughs!

If you would like to practise our class assembly song at home, it is to the tune of ‘See Beneath your Beautiful’ by Labrinth.

Thank you for all the bits of costume you’ve sent in, it’s much appreciated.

Oh, last bit of very exciting news, we are extremely lucky to have a new smartboard! Miss Prince is still learning how to use it but the children seem to have the hang of it!

Have a lovely weekend,

Love P2/3 and Miss Prince x
