Festive Fun at SPS and a Special Goodbye

Today we held our last children’s Xmas party and at the end said a heartfelt ‘goodbye’ to a very special little boy. Our lovely F is returning to South Africa after spending several years at Springfield. F and his Mum have both contributed so much to the life of our school and they will be sadly missed. Goodbye and good luck F! We will all miss you!

Thank you to all families who came to our Christmas service at St Michael’s this week. We had a great turn out and it was a pleasure to see you all there.

Tomorrow we end our Christmas celebrations with ‘Carols Around the Tree’ for P3-7 pupils.

Have a wonderful holiday when it comes,

Miss Baillie xxx💖🎄❄️⛸

Christmas is coming P2B

Another busy week back with the class. The children did brilliantly with our “Wriggly Nativity”” and I was very proud of them as I’m sure you were.

We also had a trip to the Howden Centre to see the Pantomime of “Jack and the Beanstalk”. The children really enjoyed it and were a credit to SPS.

We have been busy writing our letters to Santa and made a super job of these. Hope you’re ready for them Santa! We also completed our art work and writing about the Jack Frost story.

In Maths we have continued our work on subtraction.  Next week we will look at the continuation of patterns.

So a week to go and the children are getting very excited. Hope everyone enjoys the last week.

Christmas Happenings at SPS and Bonnytoun

This week we held three successful performances of the ‘Wriggly Nativity’ led by our P1-2 children.

On Monday our friends from Linlithgow Day Care Centre watched the dress-rehearsal performance and thoroughly enjoyed seeing all of the children perform. We are really proud of the link that we have with the Day Care Centre. There are published studies about the benefits of old and young learning together and this is something that we will continue to take forward in school and nursery.

Thank you to all of our P1-2 pupils and the infant staff for their hard work in making our Nativity performances a huge success.

All children in school went to Howden Park Centre to watch the Jack and the Beanstalk Panto yesterday. They all had a wonderful time!

Next week we will be holding our nursery and P1-7 Xmas parties and our family church service at St Michael’s.

Please also note that our P3-7 children will be singing ‘carols around the tree’ next Friday morning at the following times:

9. 15am-P3-5 with parents invited.

10am-P6-7 with parents invited.

In the last newsletter, we shared our ‘wish list’ of some of the items that we hope to buy with money raised by the PTA. I am absolutely delighted to say that we have now purchased and built a fantastic ‘block play’ resource for our infant corridor. Our P3 ‘play leaders’ will begin to lead other children in block play.

Thank you all for allowing us to buy such a fanstastic resource! Block play is known to enable learning across all curriculum areas  as well as promoting creativity and problem-solving skills. I can’t wait to see what the children build!

Our infant department is looking amazing and it provides a smooth transition from nursery , across the early level and into P2 and P3. Many of the  learning and teaching approaches that we use in nursery can be seen in our infant department , allowing us to have a shared understanding about what high quality experiences look like in early years. Our children are able to make progress and add depth to their learning as they grow.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Christmas Fun! P3B

This week I have been trying to balance Christmas fun with learning and keeping our routine.  We began the week with our normal spelling lesson although the children chose the activities that they like best to practise their words.  We also had a lesson on ‘fact and opinion.’  When answering reading comprehension questions we sometimes find it tricky to give our our opinion.  We could choose various ways of showing our understanding – worksheets with highlighters, large sheets where we could work with others and games where we sorted facts from opinions.  This is something we will continue to work on through reading comprehension activities.

We did some Christmas art on Tuesday, making spiral snowmen.  This was good fun and we even managed to discuss a little about the effects of gravity on our spirals.  These will be coming home soon.

In maths we used our addition skills to play different games – a racing track board game, snakes and ladders, bingo and smartboard games.  It was fun and quite noisy but there was lots of good maths going on!

On Wednesday we finished off our Forces topic with Mrs McVay by making kites and flying them outside.  Typically after all the windy weather we have had there was very little wind that day!  They still flew though 🙂

We had a great time at Jack and the Beanstalk Pantomime on Thursday.  It was a really good show, full of lots of laughs and we loved when Mr Wells had to go on the stage and get married to Jack’s mum!  There was lots of singing and dancing too – a very good Christmas treat!

We hear there is snow on the way this weekend – have a good one everyone!

The Start of Christmas at SPS and Bonnytoun

We are feeling the festive spirit at Springfield and Bonnytoun this week with  the kick-off of our annual Christmas events.

On Tuesday and Thursday our nursery children performed brilliantly at their Xmas sing-along and enjoyed a special visit from Santa.

Thank you to all children and families who made decorations for our Christmas trees at St Michael’s. The trees have been decorated with the help of two lovely Primary 7 girls and they will appear at the ‘Festival of Christmas trees’ from today until Sunday. Please head along to the church and view our trees if you have time. They look lovely!

We held an extremely successful Christmas Fayre today with the help of the PTA. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this event happen and to all who supported it. We are extremely grateful for your contributions and all money raised will be spend in school and nursery for the benefit of our pupils.

Here is our pupil achievement for this week…

Well done to D for his karate medal!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Christmas has Arrived in P3B

We are really enjoying the build up to Christmas and have been busy again this week.  We were in charge of making the angels for the Christmas wall display in the hall.  We decided to make ‘funky angles,’ they are more a rock band than a choir and I’m sure they will really brighten up the hall for the nativities taking place next week.

We all really enjoyed our Christmas lunch on Thursday, the food was delicious and it was lovely eating at tables with table cloths and listening to Christmas music – the kitchen staff did an excellent job and great fun was has by all!

Once we had finished making all our Christmas decorations for our stall, we had to make signs to let our customers know what we were selling and how much they were.  We also added some information to entice people to buy our goods.  We could choose to use card, pens and art resources or a netbook to make our signs.  What a team – I’d hire them to work in my marketing department any day 🙂

The Christmas Fair was a great success and a lot of fun!  Our Reindeer lollipops sold out very quickly and our decorations went well too.  We reduced them from £1 to 50p in the last half hour and a group took them around the school in a basket, they sold out too – fantastic sales people 🙂 We made a profit of £79.35. Now to decide what to spend it on.

In other news this week; Miss Baillie read us a story on Monday called ‘Here Comes Jack Frost.’ P1 to P3 are helping Miss Baillie to make a wall display for the infant corridor.  We summarised the story in comic strips and coloured them the same colour as the pictures in the book – all blue and white!  They look really effective and tel the main parts of the story really well.

In Maths we are finishing off our addition work for the time being,  we have been using our addition skills to solve word problems this week.

In science with Mrs McVay we have been exploring ‘gravity.’  We played games with balloons, made parachutes and played with paint – dropping it onto paper from different heights to see what effect it had on the paint when it landed.

E and C said their Brownie Promise earlier in the week.  They brought in their Brownie bags and showed them to the class.  They were very good at explaining what happened when they said their Promise too.  Well done girls.

Have a lovely weekend, P3B an d Mrs Kennedy x

Primary 2B

We’ve continued with our consonant blends and will do Phonics assessments this week, on the ones we have been learning so far this term.
Diary entries have been our writing focus and we learnt that we need to put the date and then “Dear Diary”. Our success criteria was to use”I” and wow words to describe our feelings. We were pretending to be Katie Morag and what we did and how we felt in the story of Tiresome Ted. There were some great diary entries and I think we all remembered to use “I”!
In Maths we have continued with subtraction, with some of us taking on the challenge of the “hot” questions. The children will explain.
We have been painting and are beginning to assemble the people of the Isle of Struay, as well as the buildings and a map of the island. These are for our display with P2A.
Look forward to seeing you all next Friday for the Christmas Fair. We’re sure that you’ll love what we have made and want to spend your money.

Springfield and Bonnytoun News

We have taken a number of classes out of school this week into the local community and surrounding area, to learn across the wider curriculum.

P7 had a wonderful time skiing at Hillend on a Tuesday of this week with all children making good progress after their first lesson.

Our P1 children had a visit to Tesco to sample a range of different fruits as part of their learning about Africa and the book ‘Handa’s Surprise.’

P5 visited Cross House to take part in an RME experience associated with Christmas.

Today, P6B led a super assembly  about the benefits of reading and our contribution to the First Minister’s Reading Challenge. Did you know that we now have a group of children who run a lunchtime ‘book club’ in school as well as an infant ‘reading committee’ which is led by Mrs Kennedy? We all love reading at Springfield and sharing our experiences of different texts.

Thank you to all children and families who have made and handed in a Santa or Snowman decoration for our two Xmas trees which will be at the Festival or Christmas Trees at St Michael’s Church next weekend. We hope that you will go along to the church to see our trees if you have time.

Next week our Christmas festivities start with our nursery sing-along with a visit from Santa. We also have our pupil and staff Xmas lunch on Thursday 6th.

Our latest newsletter will come out next week with more of our news and events for the new year.

Have a great weekend!

Miss Baillie xx💖
