Primary 5 w/e 21st of June 2019

This week we played a different version of rounders – ask us about it!!

We have also met our teachers for next session.

We also spent some time getting to know the children who are going to be our P2 Pals next session, playing games outside in the sunshine. We’re looking forward to doing this again next week.

In maths we have begun to look at volume and explore containers and how much they hold.

We have been assessing our spelling and maths this week, looking at how we have improved over Primary 5.

We have mostly finished our non-fiction texts and are ready to share these with our peers and our P2 Pals.

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards

Mostly Assembly in P2B

The week was spent practicing for our assembly, amongst a few other things. Our assembly on Linlithgow on Friday went very well and the children all spoke very clearly and remembered all their lines. Very proud of all of them.

Just a few of the photos. Brilliant P2B. Also this week we had an enjoyable time at the Book Festival and at least we had sunshine for our walk down and back and a picnic.

In Literacy, we created our own stories – completely free choice and we wrote some super ones.

In Numeracy we continued to work on numbers up to 100.

We had Tracy from National Youth Choir of Scotland working with us again which we really enjoyed and of course there was Sports Day. So a very busy week.

This Week’s News at Springfield and Bonnytoun

Mrs Burton and P2B led a super assembly today on the recreational activities that can be undertaken in Linlithgow. We all enjoyed listening to the children deliver information in a grown-up and highly articulate way. Super work from all!

Earlier on this week, we had a special talk about Marches Day from the Linlithgow  Dyers who take part in the Marches procession each year.

Thank you so much to the PTA who successfully ran their summer discos in school last night. The PTA have made a fantastic contribution to school funds over the past session through their various events and we are very grateful.

Pupil Achievements:

-A huge ‘well done’ to C in P1 for success in swimming and to K in P1 for her Enjoy-a-Ball achievment! Great effort girls!

Please remember that school and nursery will be closed next Tuesday, (18th) for Marches Day.

Pupil reports will be sent home in school bags next Friday, (21st). Nursery reports will be sent home from next Friday onwards.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Sports Day and Story Writing in P3B

Hello, we have had lots of good fun outdoors this week and managed to stay (mainly) dry!

Some numeracy photos to begin with.  Some of us have been working on data handling as our outer maths topic at the moment.  We have been reading venn diagrams and sorting information into venn diagrams. B has been learning about weighing and measuring and made us a delicious banana loaf.  We really enjoyed it, you can make that for us any day B!

On Tuesday we walked all the way to Linlithgow Rugby Club for a talk from author Colin Drysdale who told us about his book ‘Scotland’s Castles.’  He told us a lot of information about Scottish castles and then took us outside to see a trebuchet in action.  H helped him to build it and we really enjoyed watching how far the water balloons travelled when they were fired from it. The walk to and from the rugby club was also good, the weather was lovely and we saw lots of the great work that has been done by Burgh Beautiful, Transition Linlithgow and various other organisations in the town. We particularly liked the plastic waste feature as we know a lot about this, we are pleased others will learn about it too.

We have been working on imaginative story writing for the past couple of weeks.  Last week we wrote a story opener with an interesting first line to hook our reader.  We also introduced the main characters and setting.  This week we worked on the middle of the story.  We had to create a problem for the characters and write about how it was solved.  Next week we will be learning about how to write a good story ending.

To finish off our lslam topic we looked at mosques and in particular, the beautiful tiles they are often decorated with.  We made and painted our own tiles, creating our own patterns and selecting the colours we wanted to use to decorate them.

Sports day on Wednesday was great fun!  We enjoyed all the activities in the morning – there were so many different sports which meant we were able to practise many different skills.  We really enjoyed watching and taking part in the races in the afternoon, we really love the parents and teachers races!

As we have had a focus on health this week we have been learning about all the factors that work together to help to keep us healthy.  We have been looking diet, exercise, sleep as well as having fun and relaxing – as these are important for our health too.  We worked in groups to carry out research and prepare a presentation on how to have a healthy lifestyle.  I was very impressed, we are a healthy bunch and we are very knowledgeable about what is good and bad for our health.

Have a good weekend everyone, hopefully having fun and relaxing!

This Week’s News at SPS and Bonnytoun

We’ve had an action packed couple of weeks in school and nursery culminating in an excellent assembly led by P1B and Mrs Reid today. Children told the story of The Hungry Catterpillar and entertained us all. Well done boys and girls!

Primary 7 and Primary 6 have both enjoyed fantastic camps to Ford Castle and Dalguise. We hope that you have enjoyed seeing the photos of their adventures on Twitter.

Our nursery and P1 and P2 children have taken part in music workshops this week with NYCOS and have been showcasing their talents in this area.

Next week all children will take part in Linlithgow Book Festival and will be given the opportunity to meet authors and listen to different texts being read aloud.

We hope that you will join us next Wednesday for Sports Day (weather permitting), where children will take part in potted sports in the morning and races in the afternoon. We will have tea and coffee on sale for all adults.

Pupil Achievements:

-Well done to the lovely sisters, E in P2 and E in P4 for their success in dancing and swimming!

-Congratulations to M and A in P1 for their Enjoy-a-Ball achievements!

Have a great weekend everyone! Let’s hope that the sun manages to shine a little bit!

Primary 5 – w/e 7th June 2019

This week we have started to make guitars in Science. Our challenge is to make sounds that have three different pitches.

In maths we have been using tangrams to develop our problem solving skills. We have explored probability and the language that is used. We created our own probability lines. We also looked at co-ordinates and practised reading and writing them. We then had a go at creating shapes and characters through plotting co-ordinates.

In PE, we have continued athletics, practising hurdles. We had a quidditch session with Kieran, developing throwing, catching and team skills.

Some of us participated in the triathlon, cycling, swimming and running. We also did some Highland Games activities.

While the others were at triathlon, the rest of us played ‘The Pirate Game’, which included developing co-ordinate skills, addition and careful listening.

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards

Poetry and Paragraphing in P3B

We began the week looking at paragraphing.  We were learning what paragraphs are used for and when we should be taking a new paragraph as we begin to write lengthier pieces of text.  We learned that a new paragraph should be taken when we change time, place, subject or argument.  We worked in pairs to read a passage about frogs that had not been split into paragraphs.  We discussed and highlighted where the paragraphs should have begun and ended.  We then made posters for our literacy wall, giving clear information to help us to write in paragraphs.

As part of our local area topic we continued our art theme of shape and line and drew either the Burgh Halls or St Michael’s church using charcoal pencils.  The pencils were very effective for both lines and shading and were  particularly good for drawing these old stone buildings.  We looked really carefully at the lines and shapes created by the brickwork, windows and other interesting features.  Everyone worked hard to make their drawing as accurate as possible and enjoyed using the charcoal to create various effects.

We actually have some photographs of numeracy this week!  We have all been learning to divide, using our knowledge of times tables to help us.  As always we learn a variety of methods to use when solving our maths problems and we choose the one that works best for us.  This week some children had very good recall of their tables so this really helped when it came to dividing, we also used hundred squares, counters and whiteboards to support us as we work.

In outer maths we have been reading tables and charts.  We used them to find the information we needed to answer questions.

Over the past couple of weeks we have been learning about different world religions.  Last week we had an introduction to several different world religions and this week we learned more about Islam, specifically Ramadan and Eid.  We read a story called ‘Rameena’s Ramadan’ in it the main character was a girl the same age as us and she helped us to learn what Ramadan and Eid are like for her.  As part of our learning we discovered that lanterns and lights are often used as decorations throughout Ramadan, we decorated and made our own lanterns.

On Tuesday and Wednesday we wrote some poetry.  We wrote acrostic poems using the words DO NOT LITTER.  We began by making notes of words and phrases that would help us to write our poem.  We used dictionaries and thesaurus’ and discussed ideas with our friends to help us to write our notes. Our poems are very good  and everyone met our success criteria.  Some children even managed to add some alliteration which was an extra challenge.

P3B have worked very hard this week, we have had a calm and busy classroom, great work everyone!

Bar Charts and Houses in P2B

We had fun on Monday when we went for a walk in Springfield, looking at the different types of houses. We identified that there were more semi detached houses than other types and how town houses are different to flats. Our class bar chart also showed that more of us live in semi detached houses than any other.

Still using bar charts we decided what information we wanted to find out about and then created a tally chart and went around asking the class for their choices. We then created our own bar charts and were able to answer questions on these. Carroll Diagrams have also featured in our work on Data Handling.

Our spellings this week were adding ‘d’ and ‘bl,cl,fl,gl,pl and sl’. We have begun to create our stories by writing a character description of the main character in our story. Next week we will write a description of the setting and will then start to write the story.

We have continued with our house designs and there are some brilliant designs. Next we watched a powerpoint on how a house is built and had a great discussion, the children being very knowledgeable of the process. We began to sequence the order of work to be done.

Kieran came and did Futsal (Brazilian Football) with us which we all really enjoyed.

Have a good weekend everybody.

From P2B and Mrs.Burton
