Springfield and Bonnytoun News

We have taken a number of classes out of school this week into the local community and surrounding area, to learn across the wider curriculum.

P7 had a wonderful time skiing at Hillend on a Tuesday of this week with all children making good progress after their first lesson.

Our P1 children had a visit to Tesco to sample a range of different fruits as part of their learning about Africa and the book ‘Handa’s Surprise.’

P5 visited Cross House to take part in an RME experience associated with Christmas.

Today, P6B led a super assembly  about the benefits of reading and our contribution to the First Minister’s Reading Challenge. Did you know that we now have a group of children who run a lunchtime ‘book club’ in school as well as an infant ‘reading committee’ which is led by Mrs Kennedy? We all love reading at Springfield and sharing our experiences of different texts.

Thank you to all children and families who have made and handed in a Santa or Snowman decoration for our two Xmas trees which will be at the Festival or Christmas Trees at St Michael’s Church next weekend. We hope that you will go along to the church to see our trees if you have time.

Next week our Christmas festivities start with our nursery sing-along with a visit from Santa. We also have our pupil and staff Xmas lunch on Thursday 6th.

Our latest newsletter will come out next week with more of our news and events for the new year.

Have a great weekend!

Today brings November’s learning to a close.

We have had another busy week.

The weather was kind to us on Wednesday and we managed to walk along to Cross House and take part in activities related to Christmas. The children heard from some of the characters in the Nativity Story, had a snack and completed craft activities. They should be able to bring these home soon.

In maths we have begun to explore number patterns and sequences, looking at how these can go up as well as down.

In literacy we have continued to explore our class novel Sky Song, creating images of the scenes the author describes.

Our problem solving task this week was to create a decoration for a Christmas Tree,  using symmetry and repeating patterns. This was harder than it sounds!!

Have a lovely weekend.

Primary 5 – w/e 23rd November 2018

This week in Primary 5 we have looked at suspense in our story writing. We listened to spooky music and learned that short sentences can help to create suspense in our writing. We all wrote a short paragraph using this technique.

As part of our HWB this week, we explored how germs are spread. We did this using glitter – ask us about some of the facts we learned this week.

In Science, we looked at terminal velocity. Ask us what we learned!!

In grammar this week we explored adverbs and adverbial clauses. These will help to make our writing much more interesting.

In PE we have learned some new games, as well as developing our handball skills further.

In maths we’ve concluded our work on fractions and we can all now find a fraction of a number, identify equivalent fractions and put fractions in order.

We have begun to receive lots of items for our gift bags for the Day Care Centre. Many thanks if you have donated to this. The deadline for sending items into school is Friday 30th November if you would still like to donate.

Kind regards

Working with Burgh Beautiful to Enhance our Grounds…

Jean from Burgh Beautiful and one of our lovely grandparent helpers, Ms Tucker, helped us to plant winter pansies in the tubs at our front entrance today.

Here are some members of our school Eco Committee giving the ladies a hand!

Thank you so much! We are very grateful!

Primary 5 w/e 5th October 2018

This week we have enjoyed a wide variety of lessons.

In maths we have looked at addition and at data handling. We have drawn bar graphs that show facts about astronauts and their trips into space. We also looked at the types of questions that bar graphs can answer and created some questions of our own.

In PE we have continued to develop our skills in hockey, developing passing and shooting.

We have logged lots of books for the First Ministers Reading Challenge. Lets keep this up and see if we can be the class who log the most!!!!

Storywriting this week saw our aliens going on an adventure. Our focus was to ensure the story had a clear beginning, middle and end.

Below are some photographs of homework science projects that we have seen in school over the last couple of weeks. Well done to our creative pupils.

Have a lovely weekend

-Finally, congratulations to H in P4/5 who is our first child at Springfield to get into our values, Hall of Fame, for his wider participation. What an amazing effort! We hope that you are all working on your Hall of Fame activities. Remember that you have a whole session to complete tasks.

Primary 5 w/e 28th September 2018

Our Science this week included an investigation into weight. We decided that the variable in our fair test would be the weight of the ball. We are looking forward to exploring this further.

In maths we have been formally recording addition, along with doubling numbers.

In writing we wrote a description of our alien for our alien stories.

In music we have explored some Indian music known as ravi shankar.

In PE, Kieran gave us a taster session for Quidditch and some of us have joined the after school club for this. We also started to look at the skills involved in playing hockey.

Our Assembly this week celebrated Jessie’s retirement and European Day of Languages.

Primary 5, w/e 21/9/18

A short, busy week this week.

Numeracy has seen some of us explore the strategies we can use to double numbers while others looked at formal methods of recording addition sums.

In Science, we recreated the phases of the moon with oreo biscuits! We also joined a GLOW meet, during which astronaut, Sunita Williams, talked about her career and how engineering was the starting point to becoming an astronaut. She answered questions about her job and about what it was like to be in space.

We have looked at different types of maps and then identified the continents on a map of our own.

We have also begun our Committees today. Some of chose to stay in the same committee, others to explore something new.

We hope you have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards

SPRINGFIELD AND BONNYTOUN GET THE GOLD!

We are absolutely delighted to inform our pupils, parents, carers and families of the exciting news we received today. Springfield Primary School and Bonnytoun Nursery have been awarded a sportscotland Gold School Sport Award for 2018-2021!

The Gold School Sport Award is recognition of the school and nursery’s achievements in putting sport at the heart of  our school’s planning, practice and ethos. It highlights that as a school we have shown excellent practice across the core areas of the Award and demonstrated an ongoing commitment to increase our young people’s opportunities and engagement in physical education, school sport and leadership. We aim to build upon and further improve our existing provision of sport whilst creating clear pathways for lifelong participation.

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has played their part in achieving this award, we really couldn’t have done it without you. This includes; our wonderful staff and P.E specialist who ensure that our children participate in 2 hours of high quality P.E per week, those who volunteer to give up their time every week to provide an extra-curricular club, the parents and volunteers who assist with school sport and our committed P7 Sports Leaders. Last but not least, thank you to our Sports Committee for all of their hard work towards achieving this award and to all of our pupils across both the school and nursery for their boundless enthusiasm towards all things sport at Springfield.

“It’s not always the team with the best players that win. It’s the players in the best team that win. Together, everyone, achieves, more.”
