News from this Week

Today we held a Wellbeing assembly about ‘being responsible’. We talked about the different ways that we take responsibility around school including; looking after our classrooms, corridorsĀ  and playground and being kind and helpful to younger pupils.

We are proud of our pupils and the positive attitudes that they have towards looking after things around them. We hope that you see examples of our pupils acting responsibly around Springfield and the wider community.

Pupil Achievements from this week;

-Well done to F in P5 who raised money for charity on a sponsored walk.

-Congratulations to C in P2 who won a medal at Judo!

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Primary 5 – w/e 29th March 2019

This week we have learned lots about mummifying. We wrote instructions about how to mummify a pharaoh and we have mummified apples and tomatoes and are looking forward to seeing what they will look like next week. We have looked at some of the pharaohs from Ancient EgyptĀ  and sequenced them using the dates they reigned over. We researched some facts about Tutankhamen comparing the reliability of sources.Ā  We have also used clay and made our own Canopic Jars. Ask us what we put in them!!

In maths we were looking at 2D and 3D shapes, revising their names and properties. We have looked at the nets that form 3D shapes and also the technical names for different parts of the 3D shapes. Some of us were also using compasses to draw patterns with circles.

In music we played a game using beats for Egyptian words and we had to identify them.

In Science we were planning our egg drop activity. We will carry this experiment out next week.

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards

Primary 5 – w/e 22nd March 2019

This week we have begun to look at 2D and 3D shapes in maths. Some of us have explored the properties of triangles while others have discovered which shapes will tile.

In Science we have begun to explore how bridges are built. We built our own bridges to see whose could hold the most weight. We discovered that the bridges with the taller upright stands could hold more weight.

We have written stories about the African Savanna, which will be entered into the Round Table Marches Competition. -Good luck to us all!!

In HWB we discovered how our bodies change as we grow up.

In music we are learning a song about Egyptians.

We had a treasure hunt in the classroom, where we discovered how the Egyptians mummified the bodies before putting them in the pyramids. We also watched some videos that showed us how the pyramids were built.

Looking forward to another busy week next week.

Kind regards

A Week of Performances at SPS and Bonnytoun

Our children continue to make us extremely proud with another week of successful performances.

Mrs Gordon was delighted with her group of P4 and P5 girls who took part in the West Lothian Schools Dance Ā Competition and performed brilliantly!

Our P6 and P7 children ā€˜blew us awayā€™ with their Scottish Opera performance entitled, 1719. All children sang and danced their hearts out and were a credit to their parents and our school.

In addition, our Glee ā€˜superstarsā€™took to the stage last night at Howden Park Centre and amazed the audience with their strong vocal and dance moves. We also came away with the trophy for the best ā€˜valuesā€™ displayed which we are delighted about!

A group of P6 and P7 children recently Ā received Ā awards in the Scottish Maths Challenge which is run in conjunction with Edinburgh University. Well done especially to Emily in P7 and Katie in P6 who both gained gold awards.

Lastly, our school chess team won at the inter-schools tournament today and we couldnā€™t be any more chuffed! What a fantastic win boys!

Mrs Kerr and P5 led a fun assembly today to tell us all about the work of Comic Relief and to help us to celebrate Red Nose Day.

Pupil Achievements for this Week:

-A brilliant effort Ā from the lovely sisters S in P4 and U in P6 for their accomplishments in piano!

-Great work from C and A in P1 for their achievements in dancing!

-F in P4 came along to see me with a magnificent Egyptian pyramid that she had made for homework! What fabulous work F!

Have a great weekend!

Primary 5 w/e 1st March 2019

This week we have been learning about emails. We have planned an email and then had the opportunity to email each other through Glow.

In grammar, we learned about Collective Nouns – ask us for some of the more unusual ones!!

In IDL we learned about Egyptian Hieroglyphs and wrote messages of our own using these.

We had a visitor from Linlithgow Fairtrade, who shared information and chocolate!! with us.

In music we had the opportunity to play our Graphic Score. This sounded great.

In Science, we explored microorganisms.Ā  We experimented with yeast, mixing it with a variety of materials to see which created the most carbon dioxide. We saw this through balloons being inflated.

Have a lovely weekend

Primary 5 week ending 22/2/19

We’ve had a short, but busy week.

In maths we have continued to explore fractions, with some of us beginning to explore the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages and others placing fractions on a numberline.

In Science we have begun to learn about micro-organisms.

We have been researching facts about Egypt and putting them into a timeline, which started at 7,500BC.

In music we learned how to make our own graphic scores in small groups. We’re looking forward to performing these soon!

Finally, in grammar, we explored open and closed questions and created some of our own.

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards,

Primary 5 and Mrs Kerr

Primary 5 w/e 25th January 2019

This week we had the opportunity to put our handball skills to the test, at the Handball Festival at Linlithgow Academy on Thursday. We played against other schools from Linlithgow and had great fun.

In maths we have begun to explore money. We will continue to do this next week too. We have begun to use a new mental maths resource to help us with our mental agility.

Our storywriting this week was about The Arctic Circle. Our stimulus for the story was a character outside a small metal building in the Arctic. We then created our own stories about the character and the events that might happen to him.

In our Guided Reading Task this week we described what we might do if we could spend a day with a character from our reading book. There were some interesting ideas. We have also completed comprehension tasks.

We have looked at Alexander Fleming as our Famous Scot. We have created posters and powerpoints about both Fleming and Alexander Graham Bell.

Primary 5 w/e 21st December 2018

We have had lots of fun in class this week.

We escaped Santa’s Grotto by solving a variety of literacy clues that revised some of the skills we have learned this term.

We solved the mystery of who had eaten Mrs Claus’ Christmas Cake, working through a series of problem solving and maths activities to do this.

We had an amazing time at our Christmas Party yesterday – thankyou Miss Baillie for organising this and toĀ  Mr Logan for being our DJ for the afternoon.

We have completed a variety of Christmas activities, including a sock snowman which was our Christmas present from Mrs Kerr.

We would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and best wishes for 2019.

Love from Primary 5 and Mrs Kerr

Primary 5 w/e 14th December 2018

The pictures show us making our models for our Novel Study of Sky Song. We recreated a scene from the novel and wrote a short blurb explaining what was happening in the scene.

In maths we have learnt how to use function machines and we designed our own function machines to display in the classroom. As our Problem Solving challenge this week, we were working with digits – ask us what we were up to with this!!

In PE we were learning how to do some Ceilidh dances. We practised the Canadian Barn Dance and the Dashing White Sargent. We also did the Grand Old Duke of York.

We had a wonderful trip to the Pantomime and enjoyed the fun that was happening there.

We hope you have a lovely weekend.

Primary 5 w/e 7/12/18

As we count down towards Christmas, we have had a busy week with our enterprise activities. We have filled our gift bags for the Day Care Centre with the donations we received. Many thanks if you helped us with these. We also created candy cane reindeer and snowman ‘mystery’ cups to sell at the Christmas Fayre. We have raised Ā£88 this morning at the Fayre. Well done to everyone.

In Literacy we have continued to read Sky Song and complete activities related to this.

In maths our focus has been number sequences and patterns. We have looked at how to work out which numbers are missing when the sequence goes up and down.

Have a lovely weekend

Kind regards
