P4/5 Week commencing 4th February 2019

During PE on Monday we were learning different types of balances used in gymnastics. Once we have learned more we will be putting them to music and creating a routine.

On Tuesday we took part in the fifth workshop provided by NYCOS (National Youth Choir of Scotland) where we learned how to read notes and made the notes with our bodies.

During ICT we practised our maths skills using Education City. Some of us used our own login details and we can also use these logins at home.

In Science we went outside to practice transporting water down a line of people to show how people who live in Kenya, Africa collect water.

In Maths we started working on money, calculating change from £1 and £2.  We also started doing time with Mrs Birkett. During Big Maths this week we used our problem solving skills to solve the questions.

In reading we took part in our third “Literacy Circles” and carried out our different roles. We are learning how the Author sets the story and creates characters. Some of our groups got new books this week and we started working on our new resource “The Literacy Box”.

In writing this week we learned how to create a newspaper report and we had different options to choose from. We wrote lots of very interesting stories.

We have continued reading our new class novel which is Doctor Who “The Secret in Vault 13” by David Solomons.  In the TARDIS Ryan has realised that there is no furniture for him to rest on. He also brought a begonia into the TARDIS and it has stopped them from going on holiday.

P4/5 Week Commencing 28th January 2019

On Monday we welcomed Miss Fiddes our Student Teacher from Edinburgh University.  Miss Fiddes showed us how to write an acrostic poem using our names.  This helped Miss Fiddes learn interesting facts about us.

On Tuesday we took part in the fourth workshop provided by NYCOS (National Youth Choir of Scotland) where we learned how to perform a new song called “Star Bright Star Light”.

During ICT we practised our maths skills using SumDog and Education City.  Next week we are going to receive passwords so that we can log into Education City at home.  The passwords will be stuck into our homework jotters.

In Science we finished off our work on the digestive system and started looking at water.  We watched “Reach out Reporter” and learned about a “hagfish” which produces natural mucus to protect itself from attack.  Scientists are trying to use this for clothes and bungee jumping ropes.

In Maths we finished off our work on maps by asking each other questions and giving directions to reach different destinations.  We also finished off our work on shape and will be moving onto money next week. During Big Start this week we used our problem solving skills to solve a number problem.

In reading we took part in our second “Literacy Circles” and carried out our different roles.  We had more time this week to work in our circles as we did not have to go to a special assembly.

In writing this week we learned how to do a “Re-count” about our Assembly.  We learned how to write this in order using sequential words and paragraphs.  In handwriting we learned how to space our letters consistently.

We also started our new topic about the Egyptians by completing a “KWL” grid.

We have continued reading our new class novel which is Doctor Who “The Secret in Vault 13” by David Solomons.  The Doctor has saved an alien species from the Space Lord and reprogrammed all the Mark 4 Army against the space lord. They all escaped using the Tardis.

P4/5 Week commencing 21st January 2019

On Tuesday we took part in the third workshop provided by NYCOS (National Youth Choir of Scotland) where we learned how to perform more new songs, singing skills, rhymes and movement.

During ICT we practised our maths skills using SumDog and Education City.  We also used a search engine to find interesting facts about Andrew Carnegie a famous Scottish philanthropist.

In Science we learned more about the function of the heart and we listened to our heart beats.  We did tests to find out how our heart pumps and what happens to it when we exercise and rest. We also started learning about the water cycle.

In Maths we continued work on maps using directions and the compass.  We have also written our new targets for Term 3.

In reading we took part in our first “Literacy Circles” and enjoyed carrying out our different roles we will have within the reading circle.  We are looking forward to getting together in our reading circles next week and discussing our reading books and performing our different roles.

In writing we researched information on John Logie Baird and Andrew Carnegie.  We then created a mind map to record all the interesting facts we found and used this to help us write stories about their lives. We are going to use our writing to make a nice display in the classroom.

On Thursday we had a talk by the local Community Police Officer – PC Murray about road safety.

We have also chosen our new class novel which is Doctor Who “The Secret in Vault 13” by David Solomons.  It sounds very exciting……………

P4/5 Week commencing 14th January 2019

We have been busy practising our class assembly and feel we are now ready to perform to the whole school and our families. We have made a centipede to dance along to our fabulous song. We hope you will enjoy our performance!

On Tuesday we took part in the second workshop provided by NYCOS (National Youth Choir of Scotland) where we learned how to perform new songs, singing skills, rhymes and movement. We learned the first and second verses of the “Coca Cola” rhyming song.

During ICT we practised our maths skills using SumDog and completed our Health and Wellbeing surveys..

In Science we learned about the function of the heart and we made a stethoscope and listened to our heart beats.  We also made blood and looked at how the heart pumps it around the body.

In Maths we started to look at directions using the compass and describing the different types of angles and turns required to reach a destination.  We also did “outdoor maths” using chalks to make a compass and give each other questions about the different directions.

In reading we have formed our new “Literacy Circles” and have learned about the different roles we will have within our reading circle.  We are looking forward to getting together in our reading circles next Thursday and discussing our new reading books and performing our different roles. We will get a different role within the circle each week.

In handwriting we were practising how to get the letter “t” at the correct height in our sentences and words.

This week we also changed tables and classroom responsibilities so we all have a new job to help look after the classroom.

This Week’s News at SPS and Bonnytoun

We have been busy continuing our Scots focus in school this week. Today, P4/5 held a great assembly about ‘New Year’ which ended with all children singing a Scots song about a centipede. Thank you to Mr Ritchie for his efforts which saw all children speaking out and performing well.

Next week, P7 will be holding a Burns’ Supper on Tuesday afternoon and P2 will also be having an afternoon of Scots poetry and activities.

Our Nursery children have been developing their ‘forest skills’ this week by roasting marshmallows on our brand new fire pit.

Tomorrow, a group of staff and P6 and P7 pupils are off to Newcastle to spend the day undertaking football related activities.

Each of our school Houses; Champleurie, Binns, Hopetoun and Ochiltree have now earned over 1000 ‘springs’ and have chosen to cash these in on a trip to Dovecot Park! This means that each class will be allowed to visit the park for a play session over the next week or so. Keep posted for more news.

P4/5 Week commencing 7/1/2019

Happy New Year!

This week we all wrote our new year’s resolutions and made a nice display for the classroom.

We have been busy writing and preparing for our Assembly which will be held next Friday.  We have been learning our lines and song ready for the performance.  We look forward to seeing all family members next Friday 18th January.

We have been keeping fit this week by doing our walk a mile and taking part in the new “Boot Camp” taster session.  It was very hard and we all had to have a little rest afterwards to recover!  When we moaned the instructor made us do ten burpees!!

On Tuesday we took part in the first workshop provided by NYCOS (National Youth Choir of Scotland) where we learned how to perform new songs with movement and rhythm.

In literacy we finished off our work on the book study from the Firework Maker’s Daughter.  We also updated our targets for both literacy and maths.

During ICT we completed the Health & Wellbeing survey for the school and practised our maths skills using SumDog.

In Science we looked at the function of the digestive system and made the contents of what the inside of our stomach would look like.  When we saw the contents of it all mixed up it looked a little bit like “vomit”!  One of the experiment bags exploded and went all over the classroom floor!  What a smell it made!

P4/5 Week commencing 10th December 2018

In Maths this week we did a mystery maths problem solving activity called “The Mystery of the Christmas Party”.  We also did some “Number Talks” to learn more about our numbers and maths vocabulary.  On Friday we challenged ourselves with our BIG Maths to improve our multiplication and addition knowledge.

In handwriting we have been learning how to form and slightly slant capital letters. We have been practising slightly slanting our letters as these speeds up our handwriting.

In PE we have been learning some Scottish dances and also dances for our Christmas party next week.

In our book study topic we have been drawing and painting our favourite scenes from the story.  We have also been making models of the grotto, jungle and the palace.  We hope to have these finished next week and also to create a wall display in the classroom.

In our book study “The Firework Maker’s Daughter” we have now finished the book and discovered how Lila became a Firework Maker.  We also found out the secret of the three gifts which were luck, talent and determination.

On Thursday we all went to the Howden Park Centre to watch the panto “Jack and the Bean Stalk version 2.0”.  We all had a great time!

We have also been working on our song for “Carols around the Christmas Tree” which is going to be “Frosty the Snowman”.

The “Classroom Elf” has been getting up to mischief this week.  He has stolen shoes, shorts and swapped all the shoes during PE time.  He messed up the calendar by turning the dates upside down and also pinched the chocolate advent calendar.  He moved Christmas day to the 12th of December and blue tacked a pencil pot to the wall and sat inside it.  He then scattered all the pencils over the tables and had a power nap on Mr Ritchie’s desk.

P4/5 Week commencing 26th November 2018

In Maths we have been working more on our subtraction using the written method.  With our work on shapes we learned we could make repeating patterns with them.  We also did some problem solving using “Talk It Solve It and Ask It “on shapes and numbers. In Big Maths we have moved onto the multiplication challenge sheets to help us improve our table knowledge.  We have also been working on SumDog.  We have also been using “Number Talks” to explore our numbers and learn maths vocabulary.

In handwriting we have been learning how to join the letters “ed”. We have also been trying our best to keep our work very neat and our letters on the line.  We have also been working on our pencil control techniques to help us.

In PE we have been playing handball and have played games against each other in teams.

In French we learned how to say the names for different types of biscuits and sweets.  We have also been revising the names in French for different fruits. In addition to this we have been introducing ourselves to each other using greetings.

In our book study “The Firework Maker’s Daughter”.  Chulak and Hamlet have met the Goddess of the Lake.  Lila started to climb the Mount Meraki on her search to find the Fire-Fiend.  On the way up the mountain there were loose rocks and she lost her footing and fell down.  Eventually she found the Fire-Fiend’s grotto and entered it……

P4/5 Week commencing 19th November 2018

In Maths we have been working on subtraction using the written method.  We have also been learning that the different shapes have sides, corners and angles.  In Big Maths we have moved onto the multiplication challenge sheets to help us improve our table knowledge.  We have also been working on SumDog.

In handwriting we have been learning how to join letters to the letter “i”. We have also been trying our best to keep our work very neat and our letters on the line.  We have also been working on our pencil control techniques to help us.

In Science we learned about the major organs of the human body and then created a picture of the body and named all the organs together with their functions.

In PE we have been working in pairs at different stations to improve our levels of fitness.

We had our final “Rugby taster” session at Linlithgow Rugby Club.  This time we played an actual match against our classmates. On the way back we got soaked as we were caught in a heavy shower of rain!

In French we learned how to say the months of the year, the days of the week and also the names of some fruits.  We also did some French maths using our knowledge of numbers up to twenty.  In addition to this we have also been writing out the date in French.

In Drama we read a bit more of the story “The Animals of Farthing Wood” and then created a comic strip about what happened.

We have now started working on our new class novel entitled “The Firework Maker’s Daughter”.  Lila has been captured by Pirates and we have created a “mind map” about the different characters in the story.

P4/5 Week commencing 12th November 2018

In handwriting we have been learning how to join letters to the letter “s”. We have also been trying our best to keep our work very neat and our letters on the line.  We have also been working on our pencil control techniques to help us.

In Maths we have been practicing our “number talks” and we have started looking at 2D shapes.  We discovered that 2D shapes are flat but 3D shapes have dimension.  We have also been learning the different names the shapes are called.  We also have been working on SumDog to help us revise our tables.  In Big Maths we have been working hard to complete all the sums in the allotted timescale.

In Science we started learning about the major organs of the body.  We drew round a body and then tried to draw where we thought the major organs were located.

In PE we have been working on our passing, catching and “the three step” rule for handball.

We had our third “Rugby taster” sessions at Linlithgow Rugby Club.  We worked on improving our throwing, passing and catching skills.  We are looking forward to going back next Tuesday.

In French we have been learning how to say the days of the week and our ages.

In Drama we acted out a scene from “The Animals of Farthing Wood”.  Mrs Hogg played the part of badger and we were all different animals.  We all had to leave the woods and find a new home.

In our class novel entitled “School Ship Tobermory” Matron was kidnapped by poachers and the Captain Macbeth sailed towards the “Albatross” to try and stop them by taking the wind out of their sails. Mr Rigger called the Coast Guard to help stop them and rescue Matron.
