P3 Week commencing 11th December 2017

On Monday in Maths we continued with our work on number patterns and sequences. We looked at more complex number patters and learned strategies to find missing numbers and to continue the sequence so the pattern was correct.

In spelling we practised our common words by helping Mr Whoops who is not very good at his spelling. We helped him correct his mistakes and write out the common words he was not sure of.

In the afternoon we used our knowledge of shape to start to make 2D and 3D Christmas decorations. Then we joined with P2/3 to rehearse our songs for the family carol service which takes place next week in St. Michael’s Church.

The class have worked very well throughout the week revising and consolidating the work they have completed this term in Maths and Literacy. We have been practising our 3 and 4 times tables by playing lots of interactive games such as Bingo and Buzz. We have also been exploring different strategies to be able to mentally add and subtract two digit numbers. The class have enjoyed discussing their strategies with one another and playing games such as Top Spot to help develop their skills further.

We all thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to share some of our learning experiences on Wednesday afternoon during the Learning Showcase. The class produced some very interesting mythical creatures! Thank you to all our visitors for coming along!

Our whole week has been full of many opportunities to explore our creativity with many different art and craft activities in preparation for Christmas. We have been doing very well to learn our songs for the church service and school assembly next Friday.

Today we worked very hard to decorate and complete our “split pin” Santa and Elf decorations ready for taking home and hanging up beside our Christmas Trees.

Reading
Pages in group reading quoted in reading record

Spelling
-mp, nd and ng sounds from attached sheet and a spelling task.

The children were given the spelling words for week 11 last week instead of week 9, therefore the spelling tests in their jotters may not follow in chronological order for a few weeks, but they will be assessed on the correct sheet.

Numeracy
Patterns in number and shape. The children should continue the Pattern with the same shape order. They can also colour to match but the main focus is the shape.

Christmas Fayre

Thank you for all your support with the Christmas Fayre. The children really benefited from this real life experience and the profits will be used to benefit their learning in the classroom.

This will be the last week of home learning before the Christmas break. Can all jotters be handed in by next Monday? Have a good week!

P3 Week commencing 4th December 2017

On Monday in Maths we began looking at describing number patterns. By looking closely at the pattern of numbers we learned how to describe the pattern by saying how much the numbers were going up or coming down.  Using this information we were then able to work out the next set of numbers in the pattern.

In the afternoon we were invited to see the P1/2 Nativity dress rehearsal. We all enjoyed listening and singing along to all the fantastic songs.  We also had to say farewell to our student teacher, Miss Stevenson who has finished her placement with us and is returning to Edinburgh University to complete her course. We would like to thank her for all her hard work and assistance and wish her well in her future career in teaching.

On Friday we took part in the Christmas Fayre by selling our fantastic Christmas stars and baubles which we have been busy making as part of our enterprise activity. We then had an opportunity to visit all the other stalls with members of our family and buy some of the amazing products, cakes, sweets, ornaments and raffle tickets on sale.

Dear All

This week in literacy we did the ‘ou’ exception sounds. We talked about our achievements at show and tell. We read in our groups and had personal reading time. Mrs McAlpine read us the ‘Lost Prince’, one of our Hamish McHaggis books. We listened to Mrs McAlpine reading out words and sentences and we tried to write them out with correct spelling and punctuation. We learned plurals and that words ending in ch, sh, x or s need an ‘es’ at the end if there is more than one. We added adjectives to our sentences and underlined them in blue.

In numeracy we were learning about money and how to give change. We went shopping in the classroom and bought your crackers! Don’t worry we used fake money and your crackers are still there! We split into 2 groups and used 2 balls to learn our times tables. We used the netbooks to practise budgeting on Sumdog.

In health and wellbeing we enjoyed Scottish Dancing and danced the ‘Grand Old Duke of York’, the Canadian Barn Dance. We also played bench ball in PE.

In learning across the curriculum we made our crackers for enterprise to sell at the Christmas Fayre. They look gorgeous and they will make a loud bang! We also went to see the Nativity performance, it was amazing!

Hope you have a good weekend!

Hi

Please  find attached reading and spelling home learning for this week. Please try to let youtr child go on sumdog to do budgeting and money.

Reading Comprehension

How to play charades – follow instructions. Please help your child if they find the reading difficult but try to let them think about following the instructions and why it is important to do things in a certain order. If you are really busy with the Christmas period and find it difficult to complete please talk about a familiar situation and why the order is important and put a note in jotter to say that you discussed following instructions.

Spelling

Your child should have written out their spelling words in their jotters. If they have time they can do a spelling wise. Otherwise please concentrate on the reading comprehension.

Numeracy

Numeracy is budgeting and money in preparation for the Christmas Fayre. In last week’s home learning most  children could count up the items but forgot to take change away from their budget. Some children used their total of the items as their budget. I explained to them that in a real situation it was unlikely that the budget would be exact or that people would bring the correct change. Please let them practice on sumdog or with real money. The crackers are priced at £1.50 so you could maybe practise how much ot would cost altogether and change from their budget. If you have any concerns about paying for the crackers please let me know confidentially by letter especially if you have a large family.

Apologies for home learning being sent out late. I will extend handing in day till Monday.

Have a good week.

Kind Regards

Louise

P3 Week commencing 27th November 2017

On Monday we worked hard to learn our new spelling patterns for this week and practised our words as we moved around the different active spelling stations. In Maths we continued learning about the different types of repeating patterns and began work designing our own tile designs.  In the afternoon we began work to create a “friendship circle” using our very own hand designs.  We also tried out our new “learning through play” activity centres.

We had a great time at the Bench ball Festival. The class had worked so hard throughout the term learning the rules of the game and practising their throwing and catching skills. Mrs McVay was very proud of how well we played in our games and how supportive we were of one another throughout the afternoon.

The glitter is out! Our classroom carpet is very sparkly after having a great afternoon on Thursday making Christmas decorations for the school hall and tree. We are busy making our Christmas craft to sell at the Christmas Fayre so please remember to come and visit us next Friday.

P3 Week commencing 20th November

On Monday we were looking at the importance of “friendship” and what makes a really good friend. We also practiced our handwriting by looking at how the letters “e” and “f” are joined together.  Miss Stevenson also assisted us with our mathematical and spelling patterns.

On Tuesday we had great fun learning about magnetism. We spent time exploring and looking for items around the classroom that were magnetic.

Throughout the week we have been learning the French words for the days of the week and the weather. We have a lovely new calendar in class that helps us discuss the date and the weather in French!

Following our trip to the Kelpies we decided to draw our own pictures of the Kelpies. We used oil pastels and water colours and many of us chose to paint the Kelpies at night when they are lit in many different bright colours.

We have been very busy revising our Bench ball rules and playing lots of games in preparation for our festival next week. We are looking forward to going along to the Academy!
