School And Nursery News…

I hope that you are all enjoying the holiday weekend and are making the most of a couple of days off work and school. Here is our news from last week…

We held a lovely assembly last Friday when Anita, Jayden and Lucas took centre stage to share with us how they celebrate Chinese New Year. We watched a video of The Dragon Dance and learned about different Chinese customs that are traditional to this time of year.

Next week, all children will make or write something in classes to do with Chinese New Year and we will make a whole-school display of our work. We really enjoy learning about different cultures and broadening our understanding of global citizenship.

Here are some of our certificate winners for this week:

Our birthday children are pictured below, including two of our little nursery pupils who also celebrated a birthday last week. Happy Birthday to you all!

Finally, an achievement for last week. Here is G in P1B with his Enjoy-A-Ball trophy. Well done G, we are very proud of you!

The nursery children had a visit from Zoo Lab last week and really enjoyed learning about different animals associated with Chinese New Year. Did you know that 2018 is the year of the dog?

See you all back in school and nursery on Wednesday for a nice, short week.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Love Miss Baillie xx💖💓💖

Primary 3/4 Blog Week Beginning 5.2.18

Dear All

We won class of the week!

This week in literacy we learned about adverbs and verbs. We did dictation and spelling on ‘ie’ words. We listened to our ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ class novel.

In French we learned about different food and drink including ice-cream and pizza!

In numeracy we used concrete maths materials to see links between subtraction and addition. We played fact families on the smartboard for addition and subtraction and then used Heinemann textbooks to write out our facts in numbers and symbols.

In health and wellbeing we were talking about who we trusted. We also played Gaelic football.

In learning across the curriculum we learned about the Vikings and made longboats. For Chinese New Year we made fortune tellers. In music we were learning a song in Gaelic. In NYCOS we listed to claps of a song and guessed where the claps stopped.

Lily says “we love school!” and Mark says “it was a great week!”

Hope you have a good long weekend!

Primary 3

We have had a very busy week in Primary 3! In Numeracy we have been learning about money, being able to calculate change from £1 and beyond. We had great fun role playing as shop keepers and customers to consolidate what we have been learning throughout the week.

This week we were learning about Alexander Graham Bell and how he invented the telephone. The children were very interested to see how the telephone has evolved throughout the years and had a super discussion about what a phone may look like in years to come!

Last week the class had designed their own televisions for the year 2050! They were very imaginative! On Thursday we were learning about persuasive language and therefore created excellent advertising posters to help sell their televisions. Everyone did a great job!

Have a great weekend,

Mrs McVay and Primary 3

P2/3 inventors, footballers and shop keepers

This week we have been getting stuck into our new topic; Scottish inventions. We turned our kelpie cave into an inventing corner, it has been a big hit! Thank you for all of the junk modelling materials, here are some of the inventions we have designed so far:

In PE this week we have been working on our football skills, we are learning how to dribble a ball through fun games such as Robin Hood and the body parts game.

Continuing with our non fiction text focus in literacy, we found interesting facts and wrote them in full sentences. We have also been learning how to write sentences in the past tense, we know that we can add ‘ed’ to the end of a verb to do this.

In Maths we worked on giving change, using subtraction strategies such as a number line to help us. We loved setting up our own shops and practising giving change. Here are some photos of our shops:

Have a lovely long weekend,

This Week’s News…💫

Thank you so much to Mrs McAlpine and P3/4 for their insightful assembly about Growth Mindset. We all really enjoyed it and learned lots of new things.

Here are our nursery angels who came to join us at assembly showing us our ‘resilience’ value. Look at those big muscles!!

Mrs Parlett and the boys and girls have been making ‘slime’ in the nursery this week which particularly fascinated our P7B boys when we went down for a visit last Tuesday morning. Mrs Fraser has also been busy making the Aurora Borealis at pupils’ request, above the ice palace in the Expressive Arts room. Imagine being able to see the Northern Lights in our nursery! How amazing!

Here is D in P5A with his chess achievement  for this week. D took part in a big competition with lots of other children and won! We are so proud of you D!  We are also very grateful to D’s Dad, Mr Kitaev, who comes into school each Monday lunchtime to run a Maths Club for our children. If you have a skill to share and would be interested in running a lunchtime or after-school club for our kids then please get in touch with me at school-we’d love to have you as part of our team!

We are delighted to reveal that we have this year’s Gala Queen once again, with the lovely Emilie Cunningham due to take up reign in June from our previous Queen, Ruby. This is a huge accolade for Springfield and for Emilie and her family. We can’t wait to support Emilie over the coming months as she prepares for her big day!

Keep an eye out for the next edition of our school and nursery newsletters which should be mailed out to you all next week.

At the request of one of our P1 girls, we are planning to rearrange the ‘Big Bedtime Story’ for nursery to P3 children which we had to cancel last month due to the snowy weather.  We are so sorry that we had to cancel. Watch this space for a new date!

Finally, a very Happy Birthday to AL in P3 who got her birthday sticker in Assembly last Friday. We all hope that you had a lovely day!

Speak to you all next week,

Love Miss Baillie xxx💖💖🌟

Home Learning Week Beginning 5.2.18

Dear All

Thanks to everyone who managed to come along to the children’s assembly today and for all your lovely comments. We really appreciated them!

Next Week’s home learning is:

Reading

Pages covered in class from reading books

Choose literacy task from Viking Home Learning Grid:

(• Write a Viking saga.• Write a fact file about a Viking god or goddess.• Read a novel about Vikings and tell a friend or family member about it.)

As recommended on dojo, these are not tasks that need to be all completed in a week. It is an independent project for the children to choose and work on over this term (to be completed by 12th March).

Spelling

Learn words written out from sheet. These are the last of the Level 2 words. I will be assessing the children again to see what improvement they have made.

-ed -ed
dented melted
dusted mended
ended planted
funded rusted
grunted tested
handed
hunted

Numeracy

Play number bonds games on Sumdog or Education City:

Bond the multiples of 5 with 100 e.g. 65 and 35, 55 and 45, 45

Optional

Choose an additional task from Viking home learning grid (not literacy or numeracy).

We have a few events coming up:

  • 15.2.18 Author Natasha Rimmington will visit all P3 children
  • 1.3.18 am Trip to Peel to do a workshop on animal tracks as we are doing farming next term (parent helpers needed)
  • 6.3.18 (tbc) RBS are coming in to do a money sense workshop. Thank you to Mrs McLellan who informed me of this workshop.

Hope you have a lovely weekend.

Kind Regards

Louise

Primary 3/4 Blog Week Beginning 29th January 2018

Dear All

This week in literacy we learned when to use proper nouns. We learned the soft ‘g’, ‘ee’ and ‘ea’ spelling words. We started reading ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ which is about a Viking. We designed badges about Vikings. We described the main character ‘Hiccup’ and drew a picture of him. We researched Vikings on the netbook and typed the facts up and wrote in our literacy jotters.

In French we learned how to say different fruits using High Five French. We found out that the French say “I have an apple red instead of a red apple”.

In numeracy we used ‘Freddie’s pocket’ to practice counting money subtraction on a number line. We played number games on the smartboard.

In health and wellbeing we learned about Growth Mindset and did our assembly on it. Hope you enjoyed it!

In learning across the curriculum we had Piper Tommy in to play the bagpipes as we have been learning about Scottish crafts and music. He played The Flower of Scotland, The Skye Boat song and the Flight of the Bumble Bee. He showed us how the bagpipes worked. It was loud and he played them very fast. He was wearing the Couper tartan kilt and a hat. It was green and purple. He wore a sporran on his kilt. He had a traditional Scottish knife in his long green sock. He had holes in his shoes as the original shoes were like Roman sandals to let water out. In music we played instruments to Katie Bairdie and we recorded it. We learned rhythms in NYCOS using a rhyming song. In Science we learned where we would find water and made plants representing worlds.

Hope you have a good weekend!

Thank you

P6 and P7 x

P2/3 time travelling!

This week we started our new topic; we are time travellers, travelling back in time to look at how Scottish inventors have shaped our lives today. We learnt about John Logie Baird, inventor of the television. It took John a long time to get his invention right, he made lots of mistakes but he never gave up. We think he was very resilient! We even had a go at inventing our own televisions, Miss Prince was very impressed by our creativity and imagination. Some of our ideas were: a television we can step inside and become the characters, televisions that can predict the future and 3D televisions that make us feel we are really there.
In Maths we started learning about money. We reminded ourselves of all of the coin values and we started work on adding amounts and giving change.
In Literacy we have all been working hard to meet our personal targets. We are really enjoying reading our brand new reading books and learning lots about the features of non fiction books.
Finally, in Health and Wellbeing we learnt about our emotions and how we can express our emotions through our faces and body language. Here our some photos of us exploring the different emotions:

Have a great weekend!
