Springfield and Bonnytoun News…

This week started with a special visit for P4-7 from the Deacons Court of Linlithgow and an introduction to our new Provost. We were happy to meet our Provost and on behalf of our school, we wish him all the very best for his first Marches Day next month. Some of our children and Mr Wells even got to dress up as Baillies!

We also talked about the Decorated Bicycle competition on Marches Day  which two of our lovely pupils won last year. We’d love it if lots of our pupils could enter this year with the help of some talented Mums and Dads! 😉

Our assembly today was an important one led by the NSPCC. All children were reminded of how to keep safe and how to speak up and use their voices if something in their lives isn’t right. We also reminded ourselves of the Childline number in case we needed to speak to a safe grown up about a problem. The NSPCC will be back in school next eeek to run workshops for our P6-7 classes to follow-up on the issues mentioned in assembly. It is our job at Springfield to safeguard all children and protect children’s rights.

We have had a number of pupil achievements this week. Here are our latest successes:

-To I, E and A congratulations for taking part in the Sunny Stars show! I especially loved E playing the part of Princess Jasmine as I’d quite like to be her myself! I loved the costume too! 😊

-C in P2 ran a a fun run recently and deserves a ‘well done’ for doing very well.

– A in P5 has completed the recent Race for Life with her Mum and we are proud of her.

-F in P3 has been very busy gaining some more Girls Brigade badges. Super work F!

-E in P5 got a brilliant silver medal in a recent gymnastics competition. Well done E!

-H in P5 continues to do brilliantly in rugby. You superstar H!

Finally a very ‘Happy Birthday’ to three of our infant children including M and one of our gorgeous sets of twins!

Good luck to our school football team and our Springles cheerleaders who will perform at the George Allan match on Sunday. You will do us proud, of that we are sure!

Have a lovely weekend in the sunshine!

Love,

Miss Baillie xx💖🌞

P3/4 Home Learning WB 21.5.18

Home Learning WB 21.5.18

Dear All

Please see above link for Home Learning for next week.

Spelling sounds are ‘oa’, ‘ow’, ‘oi’, and ‘oy’. Most children should be able to learn all the words with these sounds. If this is too many for your child please choose 2 columns only, either the ‘oa’ and ‘ow’ or the ‘oi’ and ‘oy’ as these sounds can be confused.

Numeracy learning is fractions and division to see the link between these and use in practical situations.

Some children found fractions tricky in class if there was more than a whole. They should work out the whole first, then work out the fraction for the remainder. e.g. if there was a circle divided into 12 parts all shaded and another circle divided into 12 part with only 1 shaded some mistakenly put answer as 13/24 instead of 1 and 1/12.

They are also learning to write fraction in the simplest form e.g. 1/2 not 2/4 although they need to read the question carefully.

They have been shown in class how to use an imperfect fraction e.g. 3/2 instead of 1 and 1/2 but this is not a focus at the moment.

Have a good weekend.

Kind Regards

Louise

P3/4 Blog Week Ending 18.5.18

In literacy this week we did a reading comprehension. We learned the French for animal names. We did show and tell.  And our evaluation for NYCOS.

In numeracy we learned equivalent fractions. We learned how to set it out.

In health and wellbeing we did football in PE. We did walk a mile.

In learning across the curriculum we made our farming folders.

Have a good weekend!

Primary 3 – Week beg. 14th May

In Literacy this week we had the first set of class talks presented by the children. They all did a great job and had clearly spent a lot of time preparing them at home.

Our class novel this term is called Stig of the Dump which the children are really enjoying. We have been completing various comprehension tasks about the story and this week we focused on comparing two of the main characters, creating a venn diagram that showed their similarities and differences.

In Numeracy we continue to explore strategies to subtract two digit numbers. It was also National Numeracy Day this week and we celebrated by trying to solve some number riddles.

We also looked in detail at how we create an information poster. This was around the theme of plastic pollution. The pupils researched information and used it for their poster as well as including relevant pictures/diagrams and bold headings.

The beautiful weather allowed us to go outside most days for P.E and our daily mile. Hopefully it will continue into next week!

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs McVay

P2/3 class talks, place value hats and recycling

This week was the start of our ‘My Hero’ class talks in P2/3, wow what a confident class we are! We’ve had talks about everyone from Luke Skywalker to Peter Rabbit. Every child spoke clearly and confidently, with lots of vibrant pictures and PowerPoints. I can’t wait to see what next week’s class talks bring!

In Literacy we have been answering questions on Stig of the Dump and learning about compound nouns. A compound noun is made up of two words, for example, postman. We also finished our Save the Ocean posters:

In Maths we have been reading and sequencing numbers to 1000. We loved taking our learning outside and building 3 digit numbers with our place value hats.

Our IDL focus took us on a journey with Morris the Magpie, we learnt about the devastating impact litter has on woodland wildlife. We worked in teams to recycle items into the correct bins as we know that recycling with help wildlife and make our community greener.

I hope this lovely weather continues into the weekend ☀

Love P2/3 and Miss Prince x

Home Learning P3/4

Home Learning WB 14.5.18

Please see above link to this week’s home learning.

All children should be learning the spelling words and an activity from the spelling grid.

There are various fraction sheets. The main one is is the missing fractions sheet. Children can choose any they feel capable of attempting. We have not covered decimals yet so they should only try this at the moment, if they have previous knowledge of decimals.

This exercise is to show children how fractions make up to a whole and connections between different fractions e.g. 2/4 = 1/2. They should record answers as O or 1 (not e.g. 0/4 or 4/4).

Thanks for feedback on home learning. Please continue to get in touch if you need any further clarification.

Kind Regards

Louise

Our Short Week at SPS and Bonnytoun

Our short week has flown by in school and nursery. We ended the week with a ‘teacher swap’ in school which was organised by our Pupil Council. Pupils enjoyed working with a different teacher for part of the morning and fun was had by all.

Here are some achievements from this week…

Well done to F in P3 for further success in football. Did you know that F also plays for Heart’s boys team?

A number of children in school received skiing certificates this week for taking part in after-school skiing at Polmont Ski School.  Congratulations to you all!

Well done to N in P2 for taking part in a charity run.

E in P2 made a super model of an aeroplane which she brought along to show me today. Great effort E!

Enjoy your weekend everyone!

Love Miss Baillie xx💖

A letter from Sir David Attenborough

DG in P2/3 wrote a letter to his hero, David Attenborough, telling him all about our Rubbish Dump Whale assembly…

Guess what… Sir David replied! Amazing!

Thank you for your letter, and pictures. I am so glad you have joined in the fight against waste plastic.

Best wishes,

David Attenborough

Well done, DG!

P3/4 Blog WE 4.5.18

In literacy this week we learned to proof read and rewrote a story about a farm. We corrected capital letters, commas, exclamation marks, full stops, speech marks and spelling. We learned to write words with the silent ‘c’ like science. We added more detail to discussion writing we had written on whether we should use as much as 75% of land for farming. We did a spelling test on ‘ai’, ‘air’ and ‘ea’ words.

In numeracy we learned how to set out formal division with brackets. We used our times tables to write out our multiplication and division in a line with the division in brackets.

In health and wellbeing, in PE we did relay races to work as a team and improve our fitness. We did circuits including mini tennis to keep our heart warm. We also played King of the Ring to keep our ball within the lines. We also walked a mile.

In learning across the curriculum we did science with Mrs Begarnie. We learned about electricity and we made circuits with lightbulbs, buzzers, wires, propellers and motors. We learned that electricity can flow in a circle or parallel. We designed electric models and made sure the circuits worked. We wrote facts about electricity and words about electricity like electrons, component, circuit and pylons.

Charlie from P7’s mum brought in a tractor, a lamb and chickens. They were free range chickens and had a wander round! The lamb was fluffy and cute. It was one month old. The tractor was a red Massey. It was massive. The wheels were very big. Charlie who is a farmer did a farming presentation with James from P7 who is also a farmer. They told us about breeds of sheep and cows, buffalo and deer. They told us about what produce came from different animals. We learned about sheepdogs and different commands they could be given so they knew what to do .After that we chose an animal and wrote details about what they looked like, where they lived, what they produced, what they ate and a funny fact.

We went to our committees. In pupil council we are organising a Disney dress down day. In JRSO we are designing a banner for being safer around school and parent’s letter to organise a Park and Stride. In sports we were making cards to say thank you. In health and wellbeing we were designing a cyber bullying poster. In digital leaders we were looking at using mobiles effectively and safely.

Have a good weekend!

Primary 3 – Week beg. 30th April

This week we have had a big focus on developing our mental strategies for adding two digit numbers. We have had a lot of discussion about the different strategies that we can use to help us. We are all really confident when using the 100 square grid or a number line and are now challenging ourselves further by trying to do some of our calculations mentally. Next week we hope to explore our strategies for subtracting two digit numbers.

This week our Literacy focused on creating a fact file of all the information we had gathered while listening to a story. The children did an amazing job of these and remembered to label all their diagrams.

As part of our IDL we researched how long it took for different plastics to decompose. We couldn’t believe that it takes between 80-100 years for a can of juice to decompose! The pupils worked very well in small groups to complete this task.

This term we are focusing on our running, jumping and throwing skills within P.E. to help us prepare for Sports Day in June. We had great fun this week playing Dishes and Domes.

We hope you all have a lovely long weekend!
