Alphabetical order, speech marks and spider’s webs (P3A)

In reading this week we have been learning to use alphabetical order to find words in a dictionary. We watched a Learn Screen on Education City about using a dictionary and then we played a game called ‘Space Venture’. We worked with a partner to locate words in the dictionary to play the game. Afterwards, Miss Harrison gave us some words from our chapter in Charlotte’s Web and we had to use our dictionaries to find the meaning of the words and write them down.

This week we have been learning how to use speech marks. We learned about different rules that you need to follow when using speech marks and then we went to different activities. We picked our own learning activities. Some of us were rewriting sentences putting the speech marks in the correct places, some of us were looking at speech bubbles in a text and writing the words using speech marks and some of us were copying sentences from our reading books, showing speech marks correctly, on a graffiti wall.

This week we have been continuing to learn to spell words with different letter patterns. We have also been revising our common words. We always practise our spelling in different active ways and this week we were making our words out of play dough, typing our words on the computer, making word searches with our words, creating secret agent words and tracing around our spelling words.

In Numeracy and Maths we have been continuing to learn different addition strategies. This week we were learning to add two 2-digit numbers by adding the tens, adding the units and then adding our answers together. Some of us have also been learning how to add several small numbers and some of us have been learning to use a written method to add two 3-digit numbers. We have all been using our addition facts and strategies to solve different word problems.

In Social Studies this week, we were learning to identify forms of agriculture in Scotland & foods associated with these. Miss Harrison told us about different types of farms in Scotland and then we played a game where we had to match the food/produce associated with each farm. Finally, we drew pictures of food/produce associated with different forms of agriculture in Scotland.

In Science we have been continuing to learn about forces. This week we were learning that forces can make things move and/or change direction and that forces can be either pushes or pulls. We watched a video called ‘What makes things move?’ and we discussed examples of pushes and pulls. Then Miss Harrison gave us different images and we had to organise them into two groups – pushes and pulls. We also investigated what happens when a push and pull are equal in strength and opposite in direction.

In Art this week we were learning to create work using the visual elements line & pattern. On Wednesday we were introduced to a new character in our book, Charlotte. Charlotte is a spider who makes beautiful patterned webs. We looked at photographs of a spider’s webs and discussed the different lines used in the web. Miss Harrison showed us how to use straight and curved lines to create a web and then we picked which way we would like to make our own webs. We used oil pastels and wax resist or markers and oil pastels. Our webs are beautiful too!

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

Shoe Box Appeal 2018

Primary 3 would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who contributed to our Shoe Box Appeal.  It was World Kindness Day on Tuesday and  kindness is one of our very important values at Springfield, this has certainly been shown by our community too. We were overwhelmed by the kindness of Springfield families and 90 shoe boxes are now on their way to children in areas of the world where they will be very much welcomed.

Miss Harrison and Mrs Kennedy would also like to commend both P3 classes who took their roles very seriously, communicating very well with classes throughout the school and working hard to collect and organise the boxes when they arrived.

Springfield and Bonnytoun News

Thank you to all parents who came along to our successful ‘Big Spell’ event on Wednesday of this week. We loved sharing our passion for teaching this aspect of literacy with you! We hope that you had fun and enjoyed visiting classes to take part in the different spelling activities on offer.  Our teaching of spelling starts in nursery and is a progressive programme right up to P7.

We had an assembly today to mark Remembrance Day. We linked Poppy Day to our school value of ‘being kind.’ We talked about the fact that disagreements, fighting and indeed wars, can be avoided if we understand differences and treat each other with kindness. On Sunday the 11th, some of our P7 pupils will be laying a wreath of poppies in St Michael’s Church on behalf of the Springfield community.

The nursery boys and girls had a lovely Diwali celebration this week and we thank H’s family who shared their beautiful culture with us all.  We had a very special day. Thank you! Xxx💖⭐️

I have three pupil achievements for this week:

– Well done to S for his Judo trophy and to C for his football success. These boys are both in P3 and continue to do us proud! Well done boys!

-Congrtaulations to S who is also in P3. We had a lovely chat about the rainbow trout that he managed to catch whilst fishing with his Dad. He also told me that he put the fish back into the water so that it could swim away. Brilliant effort S!

Have a great weekend!

Fireworks, Charlotte’s Web and Forces (P3A)

This week we concluded our learning focus on Australia. We presented our PowerPoints on Australian landmarks to the rest of the class and we discussed what we had learned. We also made comparisons between the natural environments of Scotland and Australia. Miss Harrison was very pleased with how confident we were when delivering our presentations and we were able to use ICT to successfully share information with others.

In Art and Design this week, we learned to create pictures of a view we had observed. We looked at images and a film of fireworks and we drew pictures to show what we saw. We used rulers to draw buildings in the foreground and then used oil pastels to create fireworks in the background. Here are our fantastic fireworks pictures…

This week we started our Book Study on Charlotte’s Web. When we came into school on Tuesday, there was a spider’s web on our classroom window with the message ‘Hi’! Miss Harrison read us the first chapter of the story and told us all of the things that we will be learning through Charlotte’s Web. On Wednesday, we looked at story settings. We looked at different pictures of story settings and we discussed with our learning partners stories that we knew that were set in each setting. We used clues from the text in Charlotte’s Web to discuss where we thought the story was set and then we used our own ideas to create a drawing or a model of the setting. Some of us also wrote descriptive sentences about the setting of Charlotte’s Web. In Literacy this week we have also been continuing to use our knowledge of punctuation to punctuate sentences correctly. We also revised when to use capital letters and we were able to use capital letters for names of people, names of places, dates, titles and at the start of sentences.

In Numeracy and Maths this week we have continued to learn different strategies to solve addition sums. We used 100 Squares to add on multiples of 10 to 2-digit numbers. We then used our knowledge of adding multiples of 10 to add 11, 21, 9 and 19 to 2-digit numbers. Some of us also learned how to bridge/cross numbers when adding. We looked at strategies to solve addition problems such as 17+6 or 65+17. Miss Harrison also showed some of us how to use a written method to add 3-digit numbers.

In Science we have started to learn about forces and magnetism. Miss Harrison showed us a science clip and then we investigated how a force can make an object change shape. We had paper, tin foil, play dough, cotton wool and cloth and we explored whether we could push, pull, stretch, squeeze, stretch and twist each material. We discussed how we applied a force to change the shape of the materials. Finally we played a game called ‘Squeeze and Squash’ and we were able to use vocabulary such as pushing, pulling, stretching, squashing and twisting to describe forces.

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

A Friend Comes to Stay (P3B)

‘Remember, Remember the 5th of November!’  We began the week learning a little about Guy Fawkes and then watched some films and looked at pictures of fireworks.  We drew our own interpretations of what we saw, thinking about colour, patterns and shapes.  I’m sure you will agree the results are fantastic.  All of the pictures are now on our classroom wall and they have really livened it up.

On Tuesday, a visitor arrived in the corner of our classroom in the form of a friendly spider called Charlotte.  We have begun to read the novel ‘Charlotte’s Web’ and were very relieved in the first chapter when Fern saved Wilber the pig!  Wilber has just moved to a new farm and at the moment has no friends, we think he may meet a special friend very soon.

On Wednesday we had a ‘Big Spell’ event in school where family members were invited in to see our spelling lessons.  As we do twice a week, we had different spelling stations for us to choose from to allow us to practise our spelling words in various ways.

On Thursday we did a ‘setting’ activity based on Charlotte’s Web.  We listened to an extract from Chapter 3 which described the barn that Wilber has just moved to.  We then chose an activity to show our understanding of the setting.  Some of us wrote about it, some drew detailed pictures and some built it using Lego.  All of the children now have a good understanding of what a ‘setting’ is and I could tell they listened well as they added a lot of detail in each of the tasks.

The 22nd November is not far away and we are continuing to prepare for our Benchball Festival.  We had some really close games and I can see that our skills are improving all the time.  This week we thought about our positioning and tried to find spaces to allow our teammates to pass the ball to us.

As we approach a very special Armistice Day with the 100th Anniversary of the end of the First World War, we have been learning the ‘Poppy Story’ which has helped us to understand why we wear poppies at this time of year.  We also had our own poppy factory at Golden Time on Friday.  The children used different resources to create their own poppies – with great results!

We also learned a little about communication during the war as our problem solving task this week was to use morse code to decode a secret message.  We also looked at several other methods of communication during the first and second world wars, the children were all very interested and engaged in this.

In numeracy, we are continuing our work on addition, although we are adding 2-digit numbers, remembering our number bonds within 10 helps us with this work.  If you are trying a maths games next week for homework, number bonds games would be a good idea.

In Science with Mrs McVay we were learning about the eight planets in the Solar System and began to learn the correct order for them.  The children completed a scavenger hunt to find the names of the planets and then grouped them into the rocky planets and the gas giants.  They listened to ‘The Planets’ by Holst and tried to identify which part of the music represented what planet.  Some children have been drawing the solar system in their free play time – a sure sign they have and enjoyed and understood the lessons 🙂

Friday was the deadline for our Shoebox Appeal.  We have been overwhelmed by how generous Springfield families have been.  There will be a special blog about it next week but a big thank you to those who handed something in 🙂

Have a great weekend, from P3B and Mrs Kennedy

Letters to Australia (P3A)

We have had a fun and busy week in P3A. On Tuesday afternoon, we went to the PTA Halloween Disco. Aren’t we a scary bunch?!

In music with Mrs Bain, we chose appropriate instruments to create atmospheric sounds to tell the story of The Witch’s Magic Potion. We followed conducting signals to control the volume. In fact we even learned Italian because we now know about crescendo and diminuendo!

In reading this week, we have been looking at giving a personal response to a text. We started by looking at pictures of different items and used emotion cards to show whether we liked, disliked, loved or hated the items in the pictures. Next we played a board game called ‘Likes and Dislikes’ where we selected a topic and moved round the board expressing our likes and dislikes. Finally, Miss Harrison read us a story called ‘Castle Adventure’ and we discussed what we liked and disliked about the story with our learning partners, giving reasons for our answers. Individually, we wrote what we liked and disliked about Castle Adventure, giving reasons why.

In writing this week we have been looking at writing letters. We wrote letters to children in a school in Australia! We used our planning time to write a paragraph about ourselves and to write down questions that we wanted to ask the children in Australia. In our writing lesson, we looked at features of a letter and we used our planning sheets to write our letters to our Australian pen pals. We ensured that we included an address, a greeting and a closing farewell. We worked really hard with our letters and we are looking forward to receiving our replies!

In Numeracy and Maths this week, we have been continuing to look at different strategies to help us with addition. We have been playing different ICT games to revise our number bonds to 20 and to practise adding two 2-digit numbers. We have been using our number bonds to 10 to help us to add a single digit to any 2-digit number. For example, we have been using addition facts such as 5+4=9 to solve 85+4. Miss Harrison also showed some of us how to partition 2-digit and 3-digit numbers and then re-combine the answers to solve different addition problems. We have also been using 100 Squares, Numicon and ten frames to help us with our addition.

This week we have been continuing to learn how to use technologies to share information with others. We worked in our groups to finish creating our PowerPoints on Australian landmarks and we were able to successfully add text, images and animations. Next week we will share our presentations with the rest of the class and we will learn lots of facts about The Great Barrier Reef, Ayers Rock and Fremantle Prison!

Thank you for reading our blog post,

P3A and Miss Harrison xxx

A Letter to Australia (P3B)

In literacy this week we have been learning several different skills.  As well as our usual spelling lessons, we have had a lesson on expressing our likes and dislikes about a text, giving reasons why we have these opinions. This is quite a tricky skill and we will continue to practise.  We have been adding our reading books to the school total for the First Mininsters Book Challenge, as we do this it is important that we can discuss what the books are about and give our opinion on the book.

We further developed our letter writing skills as we wrote letters to children in Australia.  As Mrs Kennedy has a friend who teaches in a school in Ferny Creek, Melbourne, she thought it would be good for us to write to children in an Australian school to find out about the differences and similarities between growing up in Australia and growing up in Scotland.   In our letters we introduced ourselves and wrote a little about what we enjoy at school as well as our hobbies and interests outside of school.  We also got the opportunity to ask lots of questions.  Mrs Kennedy will post the letters at the weekend and we hope to receive some replies soon.

On Tuesday we furthered our research on Australian landscapes.  We chose either the Great Barrier Reef or Ayres Rock and then carried out some research and created a powerpoint to show the information.  We presented our findings to the rest of the class.  We were very lucky to have some children from P7 to help with our research and they were also a fantastic help in creating our powerpoints.  They made sure they showed us what to do as well us letting us try for ourselves rather than do all the work for us!  The P3s and P7s worked very well together and Mrs Kennedy was very impressed (I could almost have gone for a cup of tea and let them get on with it!)

In numeracy, we have continued our work on addition, learning different methods of adding a two-digit number and a single digit and some have been adding two two-digit numbers.

We have had the excitement of Halloween this week too.  We all had fun at the party, playing lots of games and enjoying a Halloween snack.  A big thank you to the PTA and our compare, Miss Baillie.

In music with Mrs Bain, we have been creating musical magic spells!  We chose  instruments to create atmospheric sounds to tell the story of The Witch’s Magic Potion. We followed conducting signals, including crescendos and diminuendos to control the volume. As well as being great musicians we learned a little Italian too!

We have been busy spreading the message about our Shoe Box Appeal, encouraging children and teachers throughout the school to bring in shoe boxes or items for shoe boxes.  We would be very grateful for any items you have.

Have a lovely weekend, stay safe and enjoy any fireworks you may see, P3B and Mrs Kennedy

P3 Shoe Box Appeal

Thank you to everyone who has already supported our P3 Shoe Box Appeal. A special thank you to HD who has donated 4 boxes!

P3 are in charge of the shoe box appeal this year. By handing in a shoe box with a few gifts inside, you will allow a child to receive a Christmas gift.  These boxes will be sent to areas of the world where children are less fortunate than us.

Suggested items:

Toiletries (no talc)

Toothbrush

Hat, scarf, gloves

Small toy

Sweets (no chocolate)

Stationery

It would be great if you could wrap your shoe box in Christmas paper with the lid separate to the bottom with an elastic band around it.

Please attach a checklist which can be found at the link below or by visiting the Blythswood Care website.  You can also get one from school if that is easier.

https://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/213375_0185a5151b3c417fbd9c0a3c2f968458.pdf

Rather than donate a whole box, you can also donate any item from the list above and we will compile some boxes in school.

Please return any shoeboxes or items by Friday 9th November 2018.

Thank you again for all your support,

P3

Springfield and Bonnytoun News

Today we had our second Wellbeing assembly of the year which was on being healthy.  The main message from our assembly was that ‘good health’ is about having a healthy body and a healthy mind.

We talked about the components of a healthy diet and the importance of being active to keep our bodies fit and well. We then learned about how to stay mentally well. It’s important that we recognise that all feelings are normal and that we seek support from our grown ups when we feel ‘big’ or overwhelming feelings.

Here are some of our infant certificate winners who gained an award for showcasing our school values:

Thank you to Sheena, Carol and all of the lovely PTA volunteers who organised the Halloween disco for our P4-7 children this week. Our infant disco takes place in school next Tuesday (30th). We are looking forward to seeing all of the children’s costumes and are grateful to Alison from the PTA for helping us. Our nursery children are invited to dress up on Wednesday (31st) should they like to do so.

I only have only one pupil achievement this week and it is the turn of D in P3 who has been busy winning a trophy with her pony. Well done D!

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Baillie x💖 🎃 👻

P3B Weather Reporters

A great start to the second term, we have  ‘hit the ground running’, as they say.  All the children have come back with lots of holiday news and are as eager to learn as always.

Our numeracy focus for the beginning of this term is addition.  We have been consolidating our number bonds to 20 and some have been adding multiples of 10 to 2-digit numbers.  We began with some problem solving – revisiting our prior knowledge to help us as we learn new things. We have enjoyed playing games on the smartboard and netbooks, these help us with our mental maths and recall of number facts.  We have also used text books; writing sums in our jotters and solving word problems.

In literacy, we have been concentrating on punctuation.  Although many of us know when to use capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks we sometimes forget to use them correctly when writing longer pieces of work.  We played a game call ‘Rapid Rounders’ on Education city – correcting lots of sentences, then we had a go at correcting sentences in our jotters. We will continue to discuss this and think about it when we are writing next week. In French, we began to learn parts of the body and will continue with this next week too.

On Tuesday, we had PE with P7 Sports Leaders who were teaching us ball skills.  They were good teachers and we enjoyed the session.  We also had PE with Mrs Kennedy on Thursday, our benchball skills are developing really well and we will be more than ready for the festival next month.

We have enjoyed comparing the climate in Australia to the Scottish climate.  We looked at weather websites and weather news reports from both countries, then created our own weather maps and presented them to the class in the style of TV weather reporters.  Each report was very professional and informative, with some wild weather on the way according to some!

Have a good weekend everyone, P3B and Mrs Kennedy
