P1a’s Cinderella Musical Extravanganza…

We have had a lovely time over the past few weeks with Mrs Bain our music specialist.

We were really lucky to get to hold and play some pitched and unpitched percussion instruments to accompany the story of Cinderella. Mrs Bain was really proud of how confidently we did this.

Have a look at us below.

P1a weekly news

This week we have been learning 2 new sounds “l” and “c” and 3 new common words he, me and is. We love trying to beat Mrs Gordon when we have to make words or find sounds on our magnetic boards. Some of the fun activities included making caterpillar patterns, cotton wool clouds, ladybirds and more…

In numeracy we have been focusing on revising addition to 2,3 and 4, and learning the facts for 5 and 6. It is quite tricky so the more we can practice and add things at home the better. We have used lots of concrete materials like numicon, blocks, pasta, counters, people…anything really.

in HWB we thought a lot about being a kind on world kindness day and in PE we focused on coordination. Mrs Gordon made us throw and catch balls and beanbags without dropping them. Some of us even added in a clap before we caught them! We really had to use our eyes and space well.

Happy weekend

Fireworks Fun in P1B

This week we were learning all about the ‘l’ and ‘c’ sounds. We were printing with the Lego bricks, building letters with the Lego, making letters with the leaves, making caterpillar patterns, using cotton wool to make clouds for C and using the cars to trace our letter shapes. We also had a go at some caption writing on whiteboards. Mrs McAulay put a picture on the board and we had to think of a sentence we could write about it. We then had to practise using our finger spaces and phoneme fingers to sound out and write out little sentence.

In  Numeracy we continued our work on addition. We were learning all of the addition facts for 2, 3, 4 and 5…….. finding all of the different ways to make these numbers. We used 2 plates to split objects and also used the Numicon to visually see which numbers add together to give us these answers.

In HWB this week we were celebrating World Kindness Day. We talked all about our value of kindness and came up with ideas of things we could do in school and at home to show kindness to others. Mrs McAulay is keeping her eyes peeled to see if we are doing any of them. In PE we continued to develop our ball skills and learnt how to work co-operatively with a partner. We used different parts of our bodies to move the ball and practised throwing and catching at the end.

This week we also started our Nativity rehearsals. We have been working with Primary 2 to learn some of our songs but it is all top secret at the moment!!

Reminders:

  • Christmas lunch and Pantomime letters back to school asap

Hoping you all have a lovely weekend!

P1b Hall of Fame

Mrs McAulay was very proud of her class this week as we won the peg challenge and also had 3 children add their names to the Springfield Hall of Fame! They have completed all of their values challenges and have been showing our values outside of school which is so nice to hear! Well done!! If you are close to filling yours, keep working hard and you can join them on our special wall.

AW also had an achievement this week as he won the Enjoyaball trophy. A big well done to him and for having the confidence to share this with the class.

Bang, whoosh, pop …..P1a weekly news

Another busy week in P1a.

In literacy we have been learning our vowels, and why they are important. We did lots of fun activities to help with this.

In numeracy we continue our addition journey and have been looking at all the different ways to make 2,3 and 4. The children have even been able to make number sentences and model these with blocks.

We did some firework activities this week in art and literacy. We made firework pictures with the oil pastels and brusho which we all loved using. We then wrote some words to describe fireworks like bang, boom, zoom etc.

In PE our focus has been on agility and movement. We had to change movements and directions when Mrs Gordon said a new colour. We really liked the tartan one where we did the Highland Fling.

Happy weekend

P1a spooky news

P1 really enjoyed their Halloween themes this week. Mrs Gordon made a Halloween tray to explore. We all enjoyed making witch craft and potions . This helped us learn about colour mixing. We even wrote a spooky sentence using one of our new tricky words “The red bat”. Our Halloween party on Tuesday was a lot of fun and T won the best girl costume with her fabulous spiky costume.

In numeracy we continued to work on addition, this week we added in the symbols + and = and started to write some number sentences, eg 2+1=3. We also did some work on time and focused on days of the week. We have a few songs to help us and will need lots of practice to remember which day comes where….

In literacy we learned 2 more sounds “u” and “b”, we also started our common or tricky words, we learned all about I, the and to. We need to practice these a lot so we can read them and remember how to write them.

In HWB we thought about what makes a good friend and made our own potion with ingredients like kindess, respect etc …..they are a lot like our values….

In French we added rose (pink) and violet (purple) to our colour repertoire, and can now sing a rainbow (literally) in French.

In PE we were working on balance, we learnt that it is quite tricky to balance a beanbag and bounce a ball when you are doing a balance.

Happy weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a

Springfield and Bonnytoun News

We held our second  ‘values assembly’ of the session today after a fun-filled week.

All children, including our youngest, are brilliant at articulating our values and giving examples of when they are used throughout the school day.

Our infant Halloween disco was a great success and we had fun playing musical statues and other games. Well done to Oliver and Tallulah who won the best costume prizes  for their homemade efforts.

Our nursery children had a great Halloween where they dressed up and made spooky biscuits. The biscuits looked very yummy!

We held a very successful nursery curriculum evening last night where we spoke about our continued work in the nursery. Thanks to all parents who attended.

Our P6-7 Jass awards were also launched this week with all children beginning to work though this scheme in upper classes.

Coming soon, will be a new Rotakids lunchtime club, run in conjunction with Linlithgow Rotary, which will help us to develop community (and global!) links as we work to help others.

Next week is Bonfire Night and we have spoken to all chicken about having fun but taking care during the firework celebrations. As animal lovers, we’d kindly ask you all to look out for pets and wild animals at this time of year too.

I have two pupil achievements for this week:

-Well done to D in P6 for winning a Halloween tennis match!

-A superb effort from our Fizzy Fingers group and Mrs Scott who made these spooky spiders for Halloween! Well done!

Have a great weekend!

Happy Halloween

We have had an exciting week this week with the Halloween Disco and our special Halloween day.   In Phonics we have been learning the ‘b’ and ‘u’ sounds and in Numeracy we have worked on addition. We learnt all about the symbols we use in sums eg. +  and =.

On Tuesday afternoon we were very excited as we got to dress up in our fabulous costumes and went to the hall with the rest of the infant department for our party. We danced, played games and enjoyed our snacks too. A huge thank you to the PTA for organising this for us.

On Wednesday we had a Halloween day and all of our activities had a spooky theme. We had green slime to write in, we made potions, we wrote spells and we read spooky stories. In PE we were moving around the hall like zombies, witches and monsters. We were working with a partner on our ball skills and practised rolling the ball accurately.

Reminders:

  • The Primary 3 classes are organising the shoebox appeal this year so if anyone has any small donations to put in the boxes or a finished box to help them please send them in next week.
  • Next week is a revision week for phonics so please practise the sounds we have learnt. No new sounds will be sent home. We will also be learning about vowels.

Hoping you all have a lovely weekend!

P1a weekly news

It was lovely to be back at school after the October holidays. We started our week by sharing  news about our adventures during the holidays. Everyone was very busy! We even managed to write a sentence about our travels using a capital letter, full stop and finger spaces, wow!

Our new sounds for this week were “g” and “f”. We have been making lots of words using our new sounds on our magnetic boards.

In numeracy we started work on addition within 10. We talked about addition being how many altogether. The children will enjoy practising this at home by adding things together around the house.

We did some outdoor learning this week. We were learning all about hibernation. We started by doing an autumn hunt outdoors and found lots of lovely autumn leaves. We learnt about what hibernation is, which animals hibernate and why they do. We made some hedgehogs using our leaves and some puppets of hibernating animals.

In French we revised our colours with Camembear, we had to spot the colours in his photo album.

In Health and Wellbeing we talked about being different and that it is normal to like different things. Everyone agreed it is more interesting when we like different things.

This term we have music with our specialist Mrs Bain. The children really enjoyed playing instruments like tambours and tambourines.

Today we got some very exciting news as we won “Peg Bear” for walking quietly around the school. We also won Class of the Week for our fantastic behaviour and learning, this meant we got extra break time which was very exciting!

Happy weekend Mrs Gordon and P1a

Awesome Autumn

A big welcome back to everyone this week. We are all feeling refreshed after the holidays and ready for an exciting term ahead.

In Literacy this week we were learning the ‘g’ and ‘f’ sounds. We have continued to practise our word building and next week we are going to start learning some tricky words.

In Numeracy we were introduced to the concept of addition. We were combining 2 sets and counting how many altogether. We did lots of practical activities to consolidate this. We counted fir cones, pasta, cubes, rocks and even children!

The next 2 weeks we will be doing some Outdoor Learning and looking at seasonal changes. We talked a lot about changes that we see in Autumn and went on an Autumn scavenger hunt. We then looked at hibernating animals. We collected some leaves and made hedgehogs collages. Here we are pretending to hibernate like some of the animals we learnt about.

A few points to remember:

  • Next Tuesday is our Halloween Disco so children can bring their costumes to school.
  • Children can buy a poppy in school for Remembrance Day if they wish
  • P1 Dental inspections next week
  • Please put names on all hats, gloves, scarves etc…. as it is getting colder and we do not want items getting lost
  • 3 Tricky words will be sent out each week in sound bags.
  • New reading books to be sent out on Monday

Have a lovely weekend

Mrs McAulay and P1B x
