P1a’s weekly news

This week in literacy we have been learning 3 ways to make the c sound (c, k and ck). We did really well working out which was which and we realised that ck will mostly be at the end of words. We found the formation of the k quite tricky as we use the version with a curl on the k. Our new tricky words were he and me and we often see those in our reading books.

In numeracy we continued our number bonds for 4, 5 and 6. We were working out all the different ways we can make 4, 5 and 6. We found a pattern, to know how many ways you add 1 to the number, eg to make 4 there are 5 ways, to make 5 there are 6 ways. We also enjoyed using the switcher to make the numbers eg 4+2=6 and 2+4=6. We were also exploring different ways to show addition using chalk, numicon and playdough.

Our Nativity is coming along very nicely and the children have been working very hard on this. We have assigned all parts today, and don’t think we need anything from home for the P1 costumes. We have also been making our crafts for the Christmas Fayre, both of these things are secret for now…

In French we learnt more colours – now we know bleu, blanc, rouge, vert, orange, violet and jaune.

We had great fun this morning during our BEAR (Be excited about reading) event. We closed the blinds, switched off the lights and read our books using torches.

Happy weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a.

Stick Man, hibernation and vowels in P1a

Another busy week has passed in P1a. We are loving our hedgehog focus and this week investigated hibernation further. We learnt about all different types of animals that hibernate, and where they hibernate. Ask us what we know, you will be impressed…

We also made hibernation puppets and used them to act out animals going into hibernation and then waking up in the spring. Some of us them became hedgehogs, snakes and frogs and pretended to hibernate.

Mrs Hocknall read Stick Man to the infant department the other day and it is going to be the focus for our corridor displays and play area. We had a lot of fun making our own stick men yesterday and using the Chatterpix app to take a photo of them and make them talk! What fun!

In literacy this week we learnt about the 5 vowels (a,e,i,o,u). We learnt that we need these sounds in all words and they will mostly appear in the middle. We played vowel bingo. It was really tricky to always hear the middle sound, but we are trying really hard. We really loved this song and may like to practise it at home to help us remember them.

We also learnt 2 new common words, he and me. We are now able to find lots of our common words in our reading books.

This week we wrote our first sentence… it was really exciting. Mrs Gordon was really impressed with how many of us remembered the 3 important things for a sentence – a capital letter, finger spaces and a full stop.

In numeracy we continued our addition journey and started to investigate the different ways to make 2, 3 and 4. We are managing very well with the language and symbols of addition. We also continued looking at time by looking at the seasons, and what things happen in certain seasons.

In French Camembear taught us bleu, blanc and rouge just like the French flag the tricolor. We also learnt violet since we were wearing purple today for our dress down.

Happy weekend from Mrs Gordon and P1a

P1a’s Weekly News

This week in P1a we have really enjoyed sharing strategies within our Number Talks. We love using the hand signals to show our thinking time, number of strategies and when we agree. In numeracy we have been learning about addition and how it means how many altogether. We also used our addition knowledge to add one more without going back to zero and counting everything again. Mrs Gordon was very impressed when we managed to share some addition strategies during our number talks on Wednesday when we had some parents join us for our open morning. Lots of us have really enjoyed learning how to write number sentences using + and = symbols, and adding together playdough apples, cuddly toys and numicon.

On Wednesday afternoon the second group of children went to the firepit with Mrs Malcolm from the nursery. They loved learning about the fire and toasting marshmallows…Mrs Malcolm said we may make hot chocolate on the fire next…

We continued our hedgehog focus by singing a hedgehog song and learning facts about them. Mrs Gordon even learnt that their babies are called hoglets (she didn’t know that fact before). We also started to make our own clay hedgehogs which we will get to take home. We found it was much harder to mould clay than it is playdough.

In literacy we learnt 2 more new sounds u and b. We are finding b very tricky and keep mixing it up with d. We need to keep practising so we can tell them apart. We also learnt 2 new tricky words the and to. Each tricky word has an action to help us try and remember them. We also used our knowledge of sounds so far to write about fireworks. We drew a picture of fireworks with oil pastels and then wrote what they look like and sound like. Next week we are going to try and write our first sentence…very exciting!

Happy weekend from Mrs Gordon and P1a

P1a Halloween, hedgehogs and hot marshmallows…

We had a great week in Primary 1. We enjoyed our Halloween activities. In class we read some Halloween stories and even did some Halloween maths. We had a lovely Halloween party on Thursday with some stories, dancing and games. We especially loved wrapping up the mummies…Today we played a pumpkin drive game with our P3 friends, we had to work as a team to draw a pumpkin when we rolled the dice, eg a 2 was the eyes.

In numeracy we started our new topic… addition. We learnt that addition is how many altogether. We had lots of opportunities to add things together and share strategies…including adding real people and teddies…Maybe we could practice at home with some objects around the house. In time we learnt the months of the year. It was really fun jumping up when Mrs Gordon said our birthday month. We are now trying hard to remember the order of the months.

In literacy we learnt the sounds g and f and the tricky word I. Tricky or common words are words that we can’t sound out, we just need to learn them. For each word we have an action.

This week some of us were lucky enough to go to the nursery garden and learn about using the firepit. We had yummy marshmallows…The others will go next week.

We started talking about hedgehogs and hibernation. Mrs Gordon was very impressed with how much we already know. We also made some amazing hedgehogs with the leaves we gathered last week.

Happy weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a

P1a’s autumn extravaganza

We were very excited to return to school this week and bring with us signs of autumn that we had found. We put them all in a tuff tray so that we could play with them. P made a magnificent sculpture with her dad, we made this our centrepiece. We also went our gathering leaves and looking for signs of autumn so that we can make some art next week. This term our IDL/book focus (alongside our continuing Fairyland focus) will be hedgehogs. We will be exploring hibernation and stories about hedgehogs, we will also attempt to make some hedgehogs…

In literacy we learnt 2 new sounds d and o. We are finding d quite tricky to write, but we do find it funny to remember the rhyme for writing it… round the dinosaur’s bottom up his tall neck and down to his toes. We are going to keep practising lots.

In maths this week we focused on more and less, then one more and one less. The language of mathematics can be tricky and some people were finding it difficult to remember which was more and which was less. Again lots of practise at home please eg what is 1 more than 6, what is 1 less than 9 etc. We also looked at a new topic – time. Our focus was on knowing the days of the week, being able to order and recognise them. Most of us were managing this very well and we love to sing our days of the week song each day, ask us to sing it to you!

In French we learnt please and thank you. S’il te plait and merci. Everyone managed to ask Camembear for an object and thank him politely.

In IDL we learnt about the components of a castle ready to make our own one in the classroom next week. We then drew our designs and had great fun drawing dungeons, turrets, portcullis and moats…we especially loved talking about the baddies as you can see from our comments here…

Don’t forget to have a look at our learners journey online as Mrs Gordon has uploaded photos and comments to show our progress, of which we are very proud!

Bon weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a

Revision, hot chocolate and harvest

We had a busy week in P1 doing lots of revision in numeracy and literacy. In literacy we focused on being able to recall our sounds and then use them to make and write cvc words (consonant, vowel, consonant) like pat, sit, men etc Mrs Gordon was very impressed with how well we are blending our sounds together to read and write words. Here we are practising…

In numeracy we did lots of activities within 10 to ensure we are confident in ordering, missing numbers, dot patterns and ten frames. In shape we continued with 3D shape recognition and played a game of bingo with real life 3D shapes. It was really fun trying to recognise them.

We had a lovely harvest assembly with Mrs Hocknall on Wednesday and loved singing the songs especially Big Red Combine Harvester.

Today was really exciting as we got to have a BEAR event… Be Excited About Reading! We loved bringing in teddies, books and blankets and reading stories whilst having hot chocolate, yummy!

Happy holidays to all, from Mrs Gordon and P1a x

Dragon writing in P1a

Literacy

P1a were very busy this week when we did our first piece of writing. We decided to write to our dragon visitor. The first thing we had to do was close our eyes and imagine what our dragon looked like…we then told our partners and went on to draw the dragon. After that we wrote a sentence about our dragon. Some of us had some great ideas like “my dragon is confident”, and “my dragon shoots fire”. Everyone of us had a try at writing the sounds they could hear in the words we wrote. Mrs Gordon was very impressed with our work.

Our new sounds for this week were e like egg and h like hat. We love the rhyme for h as we get to hop around.

Numeracy

We revised our numbers to 10 and were able to count forwards and backwards and order them with ease. Mrs Gordon was very proud. Next week we move on to more and less and after the holidays to addition.

In shape we started to learn 3D shapes, this was very tricky. We learnt cube, cuboid, sphere, cylinder and pyramid. We then had to sort objects into their shape. We are finding it hard to know when it is a rectangle or a cuboid. Maybe we could practise with shapes around our house.

French

In French this week with Camembear we learnt how to say how we are. The question is ca va? and we can answer ca va bien (feeling good), comme ci comme ca (ok) or ca va mal (not feeling good). Everyone managed to tell Mrs Gordon how they were feeling.

HWB

In PE we are continuing balancing skills with Mrs Reid. We had to balance on benches and the horse. We also had a session with the P7 sports leaders where we did a circuit course. It was really fun.

The value we focused on this week was resilience. We loved hearing a story about Zid the alien and how he was trying to make the best dress in the world. Each time he had to listen to his friends and make a change to improve it. We talked about times when we had been resilient, and shared it with the class.

If anyone has any little bits of green fabric/material in the house could you please send in for next week. We are making a beanstalk for Fairyland and it works particularly well with different textures and materials. Thank you!

Happy weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a

Dragon’s, fairyland and shape monsters in P1a

In Phonics this week we have been learning m and r. This is how you can make these at home :

m – down Maisie, back up Maisie, over the mountain, back up the mountain and over the next mountain.

r – down the robot’s back, back up then curl over his arm

Now we have learnt 8 sounds we can make a large number of CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words like mat, rat, pin, pat, sat…how many can you make?

In  numeracy we finished our numbers to 10 booklet by practising formation and how to make numbers 8, 9 and 10. Number 8 was really tricky, but we realised that you can make a ‘s’ and then join it up!

We launched our first IDL topic this week when a friendly dragon left us a trail of green glitter and a letter. He needs our help to rebuild Fairyland…we have already written him lots of letters and sent pictures so he knows we will help him. We also made a list of all the things we should do and that we need to rebuild Fairyland. What an exciting time…

In French we learnt how to say yes and no, oui and non. We also loved learning our bonjour, salut song for the European Day of Languages.

bonjour, salut song

We also learnt frere Jacques in French, Spanish and German….talented children. Mrs Gordon showed us a really funny clip of “les trois petits cochons” the 3 little pigs, here it is if you want to watch it again….literacy across languages!

Happy weekend from Mrs Gordon and P1a

The Great P1a Bake Off

We had a lot of fun in P1 this week. Inspired by her love of the Great British Bake Off Mrs Gordon thought that P1 might enjoy their own cake design competition. Our Cake Week however was not of the edible variety….we used washing up sponges, shaving foam and food colouring icing, rice and sequin sprinkles to make our creations. What fun we had…Mrs Gordon was very impressed with how carefully we completed our task. Mrs Hocknall was the judge and pronounced the top 3 as follows : Rose, Marisa and Nathan.

Our new sounds for this week were i for igloo and s for snake. We can now make and write a variety of words like sat, pat, ant, sit, pan etc Have a look at our wonderful letter formation.

In numeracy we looked at the numbers 6 and 7 which were quite tricky to write, and we revised our 2D shapes and drew our own shapes.

Happy long weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a.

P1a’s weekly news

We have had another busy week in P1a. We have been learning 2 new sounds this week, p for pig and n for nest. We have really enjoyed doing the jolly phonics actions and songs for these sounds. Everyone managed to make the sounds on magnetic and whiteboards, and then wrote the sounds in our jotters. Mrs Gordon can’t believe how well we can form our letters!

In numeracy we were learning about number 3 and 4, we found those quite tricky to write! In maths we learnt about 2D shape.  We had great fun doing a shape hunt around the classroom.

We had our first French lesson this week with our friend Camembear! We loved seeing him and learnt to say bonjour and au revoir. We also were able to reply to “Comment t’appelles tu?” , “Je m’appelle…” with our names. Bravo!

Bon weekend from Mrs Gordon and P1a
