20.2.17

This week we have been doing a book study on a story called ‘Dogs Don’t Do Ballet’. We did many lessons linked to the story and covered concepts such as; gender stereotypes, our dreams for the future and feelings/emotions. The dog in the story was very sad that everyone kept telling him he was not allowed to follow his dream of being a ballerina. Biff arrived in our class looking very upset so we decided to write him a letter giving him advice on his problem. We really caught the letter writing bug, so ended up writing lots of different letters to Paddington, our friends and Miss Mudd. We also worked in groups to write stories about other things that dogs can’t do eg. dogs can’t fly aeroplanes!………..or can they?!

img_6833 img_6831 img_6830 img_6829 img_6828 img_6827

In our phonics this week we have been looking at the ai/ay digraph. We learnt how to use the spelling rule to help us identify which one to use. The Blue group have been revising some of our key digraphs from this block and used them to write some very tricky sentences.

img_6920 img_6919 img_6918 img_6917 img_6916

We have been supporting each other with our reading this week. We were given reading buddies and were encouraged to help each other sound out and blend. We talked about the stories we were reading and shared our ideas and opinions.

img_6889 img_6893 img_6892 img_6891 img_6890

In Numeracy we were learning how to read and write number names. We have also been learning about ordinal numbers and participated in the snail Olympics. We have continued to work on different subtraction strategies, this week focusing on bridging ten and chunking up numbers to help us subtract quickly. We used our number tiles to help us do some jumping subtraction. We jumped back to help us count back when taking away. For our ‘Outer Maths’ we continued with our learning about money. We have been tap counting to help us add the value of coins together.

What a wonderful week in P1/2!

Have a fantastic weekend.

Miss Mudd and P1/2 x

A new arrival in P1/2

It may only be a short week but it has been packed full of fun activities in Primary 1/2 this week. A strange parcel arrived in our classroom on Monday. It had a big sticker on it saying ‘Fragile’ and ‘Heavy’. Miss Mudd peered inside and found the one and only Paddington Bear staring back at her!

The Brown family were moving house so he needed someone to look after him. He had heard all about our wonderful class so came to stay with us. He brought a letter with him asking us to help him find a way to get back to Peru. Luckily, we are learning all about transport so we can help him with this.

He is going to set up weekly challenges for us to help with our learning. This week we had to help him pack his suitcase and write lists of things he would need to take. We then had to see if we could fit it all in! It was quite tricky.

img_6779 img_6778img_6776img_6767 img_6768img_6760img_6758 img_6757

We have also started learning about money. We used the story ‘The Great Pet Sale’ to help us understand how money is used. We have been identifying coins and using these to make a different totals. We made posters advertising our own pets to sell. We used describing words and a new traffic light system to try and push ourselves with our writing. We had to ‘go for green’ to try and improve our sentences. We also wrote labels for our toy pets and set up our very own pet sale.

img_6782 img_6781-2 img_6780img_6777img_6775 img_6774 img_6773 img_6772img_6769

We hope everyone has a wonderful few days off! Enjoy the break.

Primary 1/2 and Miss Mudd

Primary 1/2

In Literacy we have been learning all about the alphabet. We used Lego bricks, alphabet stones, clothes pegs and flashcards to practise putting the alphabet in the correct order. We were using our fine motor skills to shape foil into letters. We used our magnetic boards to order the alphabet and even had to dig in the sand to find our letters and sort them all out!

img_6577 img_6578img_6563img_6555 img_6554 img_6553 img_6552 img_6551 img_6550

img_6526 img_6528 img_6527img_6530img_6708 img_6710 img_6709img_6689 img_6688

The Red group have also started learning their digraphs, looking at sh and ch this week. The Blue group have been sorting words with different spellings. We have all enjoyed writing silly sentences using our new sounds. We have started to give each other feedback and identify next steps.

img_6620img_6588img_6587-2 img_6586-2 img_6585-2 img_6584-2 img_6583 img_6583-2img_6582-2 img_6581 img_6580 img_6579

In Maths we have been learning about odd and even numbers. We created stories about Odd Todd and Even Steven. We had to work in groups and listen to each other’s ideas.  It was hard to make decisions as a group so we talked about how we could prevent arguments. We then went on to design houses for our characters. Odd Todd only liked things that were 1,3,5,7 and 9. Some of us put 3 doors, 5 chimneys and 7 flowers. Even Steven only had items that were 0,2,4,6 and 8. We used number sponges to order even numbers and used the story of Noah’s ark to look at the animals going in their pairs onto the ark.

We have also been learning about patterns. We used the story ‘Aliens love underpants’ to look at different patterns then design our own underpants.

img_6703 img_6702 img_6701 img_6700 img_6698

img_6697 img_6694 img_6693 img_6692img_6598 img_6597 img_6596 img_6595 img_6594 img_6593 img_6592 img_6591img_6590 img_6589

In IDL we were learning about our famous Scot-  James Watt. We were very brave and stood up in front of the school and shared all of our learning. We were comparing trains from the past and present. We looked at the similarities and differences between our lives today and the lives of people in the past.

We have been designing and making junk model trains. This was a very tricky task as we had to think about the different shapes we were using and work out how to attach them together. A big thank you to Mrs Miller for helping us for the afternoon.

We have been studying the story of ‘The Train Ride’. We are now writing our own books based on this story. We have created our own train journeys and thought about the different things we would see on our journey.

img_6707img_6619img_6615 img_6616img_6571 img_6570 img_6569

img_6718 img_6725 img_6724 img_6723 img_6722 img_6721 img_6720 img_6719

Miss Mudd’s friends the MacDougall family have donated more toys and dressing up costumes to our class. We had some very unusual visitors to our train station including a princess, some superheroes and an elephant!

img_6630 img_6629 img_6628 img_6626 img_6625 img_6624

The most exciting thing to happen this week had to be our visit from Google. We went on a google expedition under the sea and we loved it!! We felt like we were actually there. What a cool experience.

img_6713 img_6712 img_6711

What a busy 2 weeks!! Thank you to everyone for helping bring in bits and bobs for our junk model trains. They were fabulous! We hope everyone has a lovely weekend.

Primary 1/2 and Miss Mudd

WB 16.1.17

What a busy week in Primary 1/2! We have finally finished our role play area and it looks fantastic. We have really enjoyed playing in our train station and our cafe. We have practised writing lists, menus and taking orders. We have also been using our maths skills to sell train tickets using the cash till.

img_6479 img_6478img_6444

In PE this week Miss Mudd was teaching us some new team games. We used the giant ball to practise dribbling and had to use our listening skills to identify the different instructions. We learnt how to support our team mates and how to motivate and encourage them.

img_6450 img_6449 img_6448 img_6447

In Maths we have been learning about our numbers to 20. Miss Mudd put out some new activities to help us practise ordering, sequencing and comparing. We were learning how to count bigger numbers with accuracy. Miss Mudd set us a tricky challenge to practise our fine motor skills. We had to turn a number card over and carefully count that amount of cheerios onto the stick. It helped us with our precision and co-ordination.

img_6471img_6468img_6467img_6463img_6452img_6492 img_6491 img_6490

img_6451

Some of us were learning about subtraction. We got to play skittles and had to write subtraction sums to show how many had been knocked down. We also played ‘subtraction smash’ with the playdough and got to squish the balls as we subtracted them.

img_6477 img_6476img_6473 img_6475 img_6472img_6466 img_6465 img_6464

In Literacy we were learning the ‘qu’ and ‘x’ sounds. We used our bodies to make a giant X, as well as treasure maps with our X to mark the spot. We made crowns and pretended to be queens for the day for our ‘qu’ digraph.

img_6461 img_6460 img_6459img_6489

We also played common word splat. We used a spatula and had to splat the common word that Miss Mudd shouted out. It was a race! We loved it.

img_6501 img_6500 img_6498 img_6497

We were busy doing some Winter art work. We looked at mixing colours and thoroughly enjoyed creating all of these wonderful new and interesting colours.

img_6454img_6445img_6443 img_6442-2 img_6441

After our visit from the RSPB we were inspired to try and help the birds this winter. We used lard and bird seed to make our own bird feeders that can be put in our gardens.

img_6505 img_6506-2img_6504img_6502

We also conducted some science experiments to look at how animals keep warm in the winter waters. We learnt that they have a layer of fat under their skin to help insulate them. We tested this out using bags of lard and oil and discovered that these fats did help keep our hands warm in the icy water.

img_6485 img_6484 img_6483 img_6482

Wow! We are tired out just telling you all about our week.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

From Primary 1/2 and Miss Mudd

Welcome back!

In P1/2 we have been learning about new year and have a little song to wish you all a very happy 2017!

img_6305 img_6300 img_6302

In Maths we have been learning about the months of the year. We have used songs and actions to help us remember the order. Here we are doing a little sequencing activity. We also made some wonderful collages for our homework. Miss Mudd has put them up in the classroom to show off our artistic skills.

img_6298 img_6297 img_6296

We have also been learning about 3D shapes. We went on a shape hunt around the school and were using the different shapes to construct bridges, trains and rockets.

img_6355 img_6356 img_6357 img_6358 img_6359

We even went outside to make spheres out of snow!

img_6364 img_6365 img_6366

We have continued working on our numbers to 20 and our addition this week.

img_6340 img_6341 img_6342

In Literacy we have been learning our new sounds. The Red group made some fantastic yellow submarines and zebras. The Blue group have been doing lots of sentence sorting. We looked for the full stops and capital letters to help up get our sentences back in the right order.

img_6347img_6334img_6330-2img_6329img_6331-2img_6327-2img_6326img_6346

We have used our new sounds to write some tricky sentences too!

img_6336img_6338img_6337img_6339

We had a lovely visit from the RSPB this week which got us out and about in our local environment. We really enjoyed hunting for beasties and looking for signs of wildlife. A big thank you to the RSPB for coming and delivering such a wonderful workshop.

Our classroom is looking a little bit different these days. We have been helping Miss Mudd make a train station and cafe in our classroom. Here are a few pictures to show you what has been happening.

img_6385 img_6384 img_6383 img_6381img_6380img_6379img_6378-2 img_6350

We still have some work to do but we love our new role play area!! You can watch the transformation throughout this term. It may give you a little clue as to what we might be learning about.

It is great to be back at school and seeing everyone so enthusiastic about their learning.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Festive Activities

We have all been getting into the Christmas spirit this week in Primary 1/2. We started the week with a shadow puppet show after reading an information book all about shadows, practising our ‘ow’ digraph.

img_5808 img_5809 img_5810 img_5811 img_5812 img_5813 img_5814 img_5815

In phonics we have learnt our new sounds ‘j’ and ‘v’. We made beautiful vases and jellyfish to help us remember our sounds. We have been writing sentences using our new sounds and digraphs. This week we put a lot of effort into reading and writing our tricky words. We were determined not to let them trick us!

img_5859 img_5860

img_5861 img_5862 img_5863 img_5864 img_5865 img_5866 img_5867 img_5868

img_5877 img_5878 img_5879

In PE we played Christmas themed games. We had to practise following instructions and learnt how to take turns. We played musical chairs, musical bumps and Christmas corners. To finish off, we played sleeping reindeer to help us relax and cool down.

img_5847 img_5849 img_5852

We have been very busy making Christmas cards for our wonderful families. Miss Mudd showed us 4 different designs to choose from and we used finger prints to create our beautiful cards.

img_5882 img_5883 img_5884 img_5885

We have been working hard on our addition this week. Miss Mudd has seen huge improvements with our mental recall of key number facts. We are still working on getting our numbers all the correct way round so Milkshake Monkey set us a challenge to help him this week. He also set us a challenge to put all of the Christmas objects into the correct size order.

Miss Mudd has been incredibly proud of our ‘Trapped in a Snow Globe’ writing. We have spent the last few weeks working away on our secret project and today they will be sent home to be enjoyed with our families. We discussed what a snow globe was and looked at different examples. Then, we had to create our own snow globes using chalk. We used our fingers to blend and create different textures. We then had to use our imagination to pretend we were actually inside the snow globe. We put all of our new writing skills to the test and Miss Mudd loved seeing us all supporting each other and sharing our ideas. Here is a sneak preview of some of our work.

We finished the week with a special ‘Stick Man’ afternoon. We read the wonderful story and looked at the rhyming words. Miss Mudd set up 4 stations for us to try out different activities. We put on a puppet show, created a cartoon strip, drew pictures of the setting/characters and wrote a postcard from the Stick man himself.

img_5887 img_5888 img_5889 img_5890img_5899 img_5900 img_5901 img_5902 img_5903 img_5905 img_5906

What a wonderful week we have had in Primary 1/2. We are all very excited for the Christmas holidays to arrive and we wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Primary 1/2 and Miss Mudd

Christmas has arrived

In P1/2 we have been very busy making the fudge and boxes for the Christmas Fayre. A big thank you to Mrs Woolsey for giving up her time to come and help us with our cooking. We even got to try a bit of the fudge and it was delicious. We had to decorate our boxes, fold them, glue them and fill them. All with a bit of help from the Primary 7 class so thank you to them too. The Christmas Fayre was a great success and we all had so much fun looking at what the other classes had made. We even got to visit Santa which was a real highlight of the day. Here are a few snapshots of our week.

img_5707 img_5708 img_5709 img_5710 img_5711 img_5712 img_5713 img_5714 img_5715 img_5716 img_5717 img_5718 img_5719

We were also very busy decorating our classroom and getting into the Christmas spirit.

img_5722 img_5723 img_5724 img_5725 img_5726

img_5729 img_5730 img_5731 img_5732 img_5733 img_5748-2 img_5749-2 img_5750

We hope you all have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you all at the Nativity next week!

Primary 1/2

Sing-a-long in P1/2

This week we had a special visit from NYCOS (National Youth Choir Of Scotland) to do a workshop with us looking at rhythm and steady beats. We absolutely loved the games and activities and had so much fun. We want to say a big thank you to Tracey for coming to teach us. You can download the short video to have a look at what we were doing.

img_5657 img_5658 img_5660

In Literacy this week, both groups have learnt their new sounds and we have been using the stations set out to practise using our sounds. Each week we do activities to help us say, make, blend, read and write our new sounds.

img_5639 img_5640 img_5641 img_5642 img_5646

Some of us were doing activities where we had to read the sentence and write in the missing word. We have been using our new spelling rules to help us know which digraph to use. We have then applied our new learning to our sentences.

img_5644 img_5645 img_5665 img_5666 img_5673 img_5674 img_5675 img_5676 img_5677

We have also been working hard on our CVC words so we can write short sentences more independently.

img_5681 img_5680 img_5682 img_5683 img_5684 img_5685

In Numeracy this week we have been consolidating our understanding of addition. We have looked at number facts for 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15. We will continue to work on our numbers to 20 to speed up our recall. We have also looked at doubles and will be going on to use our knowledge to help us with near doubles.

img_5647 img_5648

Our Nativity rehearsals have been going very well this week. We are keeping it all top secret so it is a surprise for all of our parents. Thank you to all of the parents who have helped us with props, we are very grateful.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend

Primary 1/2

Jack and the Flum Flum Tree

This week we started our book focus by looking at ‘Jack and the Flum Flum Tree’. We used our predicting skills to try and guess what would happen in the story. We used clues from the front cover, blurb and first page. We then had to create a mental picture of what we thought the Isle of Blowyernose looked like. Here are some examples of our imaginative islands.

img_5581 img_5582 img_5583 img_5584 img_5585 img_5588 img_5589

In Literacy this week we have been revising all of the sounds we have learnt so far. We have been practising our sounds in many different ways using lots of sensory approaches.

img_5599 img_5600 img_5601 img_5602

We have also been working hard on our common words this week. We used the spelling stones, scrabble tiles and crabs to help us write our tricky words. We have been doing lots of sentence reading using our digraphs. Miss Mudd even forgot to put some of the words in the sentences so we had to identify the correct word to put in.

img_5577 img_5603 img_5604 img_5605 img_5607 img_5579 img_5586 img_5587

In Numeracy we have been consolidating our knowledge of number facts. Some of us were working within 10 and others up to 20.

img_5591 img_5597 img_5617 img_5592 img_5594 img_5595

Some of us have even been working on numbers to 100! The numbers got all jumbled up so we had to get them all back in the correct order.

img_5615 img_5612

This week Miss Mudd has also been using our new choosing board. Different activities are set out on each table and each table has been given a number. We have to put our names on the station we want to work at and do the tasks that have been set. We then get a chance to change stations and try other activities.

img_5609

We hope you all have a lovely weekend!

Primary 1/2

A day to remember

Miss Mudd was very proud us on Friday for showing respect during the remembrance assembly. We all sat in silence for two minutes to remember those who gave their lives for us in the war. We were wearing our poppies with pride!

In Literacy this week we have been working hard to read and write all of our common words. We even linked this to our PE lessons playing some fun games with our words.

img_5493img_5489 img_5494 img_5487

We have also been practising our sentence writing. We have learnt how to use finger spaces and full stops.  We have been using our phoneme fingers to sound out our CVC words and then apply our work on letter formation.

img_5527 img_5528 img_5529 img_5530

We have been learning different spelling rules which is very tricky. Some of our digraphs make the same sound which can be confusing so we have been learning which digraph to use in our words. Shy ‘i’ doesn’t like all of the attention so he likes to go in the middle of words to stay safe. Toughy ‘y’ is very brave so he often likes to go at the end of words. There are, of course, some cheeky words who do not follow our rules!

img_5500 img_5501 img_5502-2 img_5504-2 img_5505-2 img_5536 img_5535 img_5539

Not only have we been listening to feedback from Miss Mudd but this week we have started to give feedback to each other. In pairs, we gave each other a star and a wish to help improve our sentences. Miss Mudd was very impressed with how supportive we were and said our feedback was very helpful.

In Numeracy this week we were continuing to work on addition. Some of us even took on the role of teacher and were teaching each other new strategies.

img_5542 img_5541 img_5506 img_5507 img_5508 img_5510 img_5516

We have had different stations to move around this week to practise our number bonds. We are getting much faster at our recall and we are all beginning to apply our knowledge to different sums.

We finally finished our Autumn hedgehogs so here is a picture of the finished product….
