Quidditch Fun…

Hello!

We hope that you all had a wonderful time at the Gala Day on Saturday. A MASSIVE well done to Springfield for winning 1st place for our float. A huge thank you to ALL who came along and supported our school!

What a fantastic day we had on Monday for our Quidditch tournament! The sun shone the entire day and all of us had lots of fun displaying the skills that we have attained in the last few weeks! We were absolutely delighted that we all received Quidditch certificates presented by Kieran.

We would all like to take this opportunity to thank Kieran for giving up his own time to teach us, not only Quidditch, but skills for life that we will use in the future.

We researched the artist Vincent Van Gogh this week. We had to consider why the artist chose sunflowers and what mood the sunflowers gave the painting, justifying our answers. We had to think of adjectives and images to describe the sunflowers, Mrs McCartney was so impressed with our contributions.

We investigated and analysed fidget spinners before designing, making and evaluating our own spinner. The spinner had to be for children aged between 7 and 11. We had to stick to the design criteria and researched different types of fidget spinners to aid our designs. It was very important that we kept in mind the audience it was intended for and accurately used a wide range of equipment to make our spinners in pairs. We realised the importance of maintaining a growth mindset and making improvements was the key to success as we worked through the project. Next week we are going to give opinions on our own work and on the work completed by our peers when we present our fidget spinners.

Well done to the choir who sang ‘Titanium’ beautifully during our P7 Leavers Assembly. We don’t think there will be a dry eye in the house when the P7 children present their assembly to their parents.

Well done to Joseph Burgess who won the completion to guess how many straws were in the box for Cancer Research! He was soooooo surprised and delighted!!

A huge well done also to Sophie, Sahasra and our two Joseph’s along with Samuel who got through to the final of Springfield’s Got Talent which will take place on Tuesday, it was so hard to pick two acts to go through to the final as ALL the auditions were absolutely fantastic .

We were reflecting on P5 this week, creating our own unique hand designs and we wrote about what we enjoyed about P5, what we will miss and the funniest moments!!

We shared laughter, a few tears and wonderful moments!

In Maths we calculated time durations in word problems, this provoked lots of discussion when we realised that the calculation for the first problem led to the next problem. We maintained a growth mindset throughout.

Mrs McCartney is delighted with our Personal Projects, well done to all for our hard work and many thanks to our parents for all your support! Mrs McCartney can’t wait to read them all at the weekend.

Things to remember for our last week in P5:

*Springfield’s Got Talent Show – Tuesday 27th June

*Sports Day – Wednesday 28th June

*P5A Class Talent Show – Friday 30th June (special guest is Callum Crocker!)

Have an amazing weekend!

P5 PAL excitement!!

Hello!

We hope that you all had a fantastic time at the Marches on Tuesday! We had a lot of fun watching the procession with the rest of our class on You Tube on Wednesday. It was great that it stayed dry!

We had our final Futsal on Wednesday and it was matches. We were divided into 6 teams and we all had a chance to play each other. The red team won and some of us want to continue to play futsal next session.

We were so lucky to have a Better Movers and Thinkers session on Monday, it was a fantastic session!

We would like to thank Mr Stewart for coming to teach us!

We are looking forward to the Quidditch tournament on Monday! We are playing in our house teams but our house names have been changed to Harry Potter names!

We would like to take the opportunity to thank Kieran, our coach, who has given up his own time to come to Springfield and teach us a new sport, it has been an incredible experience and we are all super excited about Monday!

We were BEYOND excited to meet our P2 PALS this week, it was amazing to be appointed a leadership role for P6!

Mrs Gordon taught us French on Thursday which was a lot of fun. We watched ‘High 5’ and we sang French songs. We also watched Thomas the Tank Engine in French with the other P5 class and we were so amazed at how much we could understand of the storyline!

In Maths we have been looking at time, telling the exact time in minutes and hours. We recognise the importance of learning time and how we can use this life skill in future. We looked at time duration and managed to calculate some really tricky challenge questions.

Many thanks to all who came along last night to meet Mr Wells, he was delighted so many came.

It was very exciting to meet our new teacher, Mrs Matos, this week. We all wrote her a letter introducing ourselves and sharing what makes us unique.

We are all looking forward to the Gala Day tomorrow, we all hope that you all have a wonderful day.

We can’t wait to see the Springfield float, go team Springfield!

We hope that you all have a lovely day on Sunday and that that dads/special person enjoy Father’s Day!

Happy weekend!

Mrs McCartney and P5A x

We are off on our travels….

Hello!
We were learning to create our own Olympics travel journey. We had to choose how we can present our ‘Travel Journey’, sharing our travel dates, hotel, flights and travel insurance. It was very important that we shared our TOTAL cost of our Olympic Holiday with our audience. Mrs McCartney thought that our presentations were fantastic! We were clear, confident and worked as a team. Look out…we could be booking your next holiday!!!

In literacy we designed our own leaflets for the Olympics in Linlithgow. We had to include: the history of Linlithgow, places of interest in Linlithgow, places to relax, and dos and don’ts.

We were so lucky to get two extra PE sessions this week with specialists. In athletics we did a relay race and triple jump. It was a lot of fun and we used our teamwork skills to achieve.
We had a visitor from Dogs Trust called Rachel. We looked at different case studies, recognising the importance of keeping dogs happy, healthy and safe! We looked at different dogs and what their owners haven’t done to keep them happy and healthy and how to avoid it.

In maths, we made paper aeroplanes following written instructions from a book. Afterwards, we tested them out with Miss Biggs. The one that went the furthest went 12 metres!

Also in maths, we learnt how to convert different units of measure (including m, cm, mm, and km).
We are all looking forward to the Marches on Tuesday! Have a good day!

From all of P5A (Written by Joseph M, Zara, and Zak) 

P5A’s Olympic Week…

Hello!

Another fun filled week!

We were researching hotels, fights and travel insurance for our ‘Linlithgow Olympics.’ We found getting a suitable price challenging and now recognise how hard our parents work when they book us a family holiday!!!
We researched our given countries for the ‘Linlithgow Olympics.’ We found out lots of interesting facts about the famous people, landmarks and currency that they use. We shared our facts about Germany, Spain, England, France and Italy with P4 confidently!

In maths we recognised number sequences and extended them. We realised how to look for patterns within the sequence and were able to predict the next number.

we began to consider appropriate measurements. We went on a ‘Measurement Hunt’ around the school and identified 5 items that we would measure in cm, mm and metres.

In PE we had lots of fun playing team building games with hoops and balls, it was great fun and we worked really well with the other P5.

We were ‘up-levelling’ the beginning or the endings to our Olympic story ‘My Moment to Shine.’ Up levelling is all about changing boring, general simple and compound sentences into interesting complex sentences that include precise detail. Higher level writing also creates a mood and can include figurative writing. We shared our ‘new’ beginnings and endings with the class and all recognised an improvement. We are going to try and ‘up-level’ all of our sentences in our writing across the curriculum. Well done, Primary 5!

Have a fantastic weekend!

We are really looking forward to our trips next week.

Sunny Days…

Hello!

What wonderful weather it has been this week!
We feel very lucky to have such lovely school grounds to use for learning about the outdoors and learning in the outdoors!
We worked with the other P5 class this week for our Grammar lesson outside in the playground. We worked in pairs and played against our partner, ‘up-levelling’ our sentences. Another pair then marked our work and double checked that we had calculated the correct amount. We recognised the importance of spelling words correctly and using a dictionary to check our spelling was accurate.

We observed our environment on Thursday and went into the school grounds (in the sun!) to use our senses to find something for each letter of the alphabet, this proved quite tricky for some letters!!
After we had completed our observation alphabet task, we sketched the environment we were working in. We had to include as many of the features from our lists as we could.
We then used our observation descriptions and created shape poems, giving our poem a title.

In Maths we were focusing on decimals. We were introduced to decimals creating art within a hundred square. We had to use 3 colours and then convert the amount we had coloured into fractions, decimals and percentages. Lots of us managed to find the fractions simplest form.
We then moved onto comparing, ordering and rounding decimals. Lots of us said it was just like money without the pound sign!
We were adding and subtracting decimals by the end of the week! Well done, P5a!!
Have a wonderful weekend in the sun!
We hope that the amazing weather continues!
P5A and Mrs McCartney

Goodbye…

Hello!
Another quick week with lots packed in!

Assembly
Our assembly for Mrs Malcolm was lovely. Ruairidh and Millie from our class presented Mrs Malcolm with a card and lovely words about the positive impact that she has had at Springfield. We will all miss her and wish her all the very best in her retirement.
The Provost of the Marches came to our assembly to talk to us about the significance of their role in the Marches. It was very interesting and Joseph Burgess out the hat on that the Provost would wear on Marches Day.

Languages Ambassadors
The newly appointed Languages Ambassadors created a Powerpoint presentation to deliver to the upper school in assembly about what they are going to achieve this term. Welll done to Sophie, Grace and Zara who were clear and confident when speaking to P5-7 children!
We are all looking forward to them teaching us French and Spanish words this term.

Futsal and Quidditch
Our Futsal and Quidditch lessons are lots of fun! We managed to play Futsal with real goals on Wednesday and we played Quidditch with real brooms like Harry Potter on Tuesday! We are recognising the importance of team work.

Maths
We were comparing and ordering fractions at the beginning of the week. Lots of us managed to calculate the answer but found explaining why the fractions were in that order trickier.
Mrs McCartney said that we worked really well in pairs to come up with the right answers.

We are now learning about decimals and managed to convert fractions to decimals on Thursday. Lot of us recognise the link between fractions and decimals, even the link with percentages!

Literacy
We discussed a time in our life when we have been proud. We had to think about what it was that made us proud? Did we do something important or different? Had we achieved a target that you never thought you would?
We linked this to the fact that Olympians must be very proud to be taking part for their country. We had to imagine that we had been selected as a Torchbearer who will carry the torch. We had to re-tell the story of the big day. Our Story Writing piece is structured into the following sections:
1. Anticipation – setting the scene and getting ready.
2. The Flame approaches – the Torchbearer has their moment to shine in the Torch Relay.
3. After the event – talking to the press, friends and family.
We wrote the beginning of our story on Thursday, we are going to write the middle on Monday.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read our blog!

Have a fantastic weekend and we look forward to Mr Wells joining our school on Monday!

Confident Individuals…

Hello!

Confident Individuals…

Primary 5A have certainly demonstrated their creativity and commitment to learning this week through their choice of class talk presentations. Both P5 teachers are absolutely delighted with the class talks this week and have learned so much about a variety of subjects!!
I would like to say a huge thank you, not only to the children in both classes but for all the support that was given at home to help your child prepare for their class talk. I think there will be a lot of people that will take up new hobbies after this week!!!

We have been focussing on fractions this week. We have looked at equivalent fractions, improper fractions and mixed numbers. We recognised the link between fractions and the need to remember or times tables. We worked with partners to support each other to complete equivalent fraction posters, noticing the pattern when completing the sequence of fractions.

What a wonderful day we had on Thursday when we visited the Union Canal! The sun certainly shone and we thoroughly enjoyed our boat trip along the canal. Linton was very informative and shared with us the importance water safety. We now know never to jump in the canal after our pets as they will manage to swim out safely. There is 695 million gallons of water in the Union Canal and they add 400 gallons of water each day if it hasn’t rained a lot!

We have been creating Burgh Beautiful posters for a competition. The theme is anti-litter, dog fouling and recycling to encourage all to take responsibility for keeping the environment clean and Linlithgow looking beautiful.

Have a fantastic weekend and I hope the sun shines for us all!

Sunny Days…

“Just living is not enough… one must have sunshine, freedom , and a little flower.”
Hans Christian Anderson

Welcome back! I hope that you all had a lovely day on Monday and Thursday this week in the sunshine, it was lovely to see the sun out.
It was lovely to be able to do Quidditch outside this week with Kieran. We had to throw the ball to each other and the pair that was the furthest away was the winner. It was a lot of fun and we are learning the importance of team work.

We even managed to do Futsal outside in the sun too!! We learned 1 v 1 skills. The defender had to pass the ball to the attacker and then the attacker had to try and dribble by them. We are learning lots of skills and we can’t wait to play a match.

We have been looking at some simple rules for internet safety that will help us to make sure that it plays a healthy part of our life. We designed information posters to convey this important message. We had to consider design layout, key points and making sure we had the correct balance of positive and negative aspects to the internet.

We have been investigating money this week. We calculated amounts using notes and coins, rounding to the nearest pound and change from £20 and more. We recognise the importance of how this can help us in our daily life. We have started looking at fractions today….

Have a wonderful weekend in the sun!

*Union Canal Trip on Thursday 11th May- packed lunch required please

Welcome back to P5A!

Hello!!

I hope that you all had a wonderful Easter holiday! We certainly had lovely weather!!

A short but busy week this week!

We are so proud of Lily and Nicci for raising money for Sick Kids, what an achievement! Well done and thank you so much to everyone who supported the cause.

It was great to see the children back and hear all their holiday news! We enjoyed sharing our news with our friends and focussing on what places we went, things we did and people we saw.

We have been focussing on division in Maths, we started with dividing 1 digit by 2 and 3 digit numbers. We are learning the traditional (long method) division.
We will move on to 4 digit numbers as the children become more confident. We have realised how important it is to know our times table. Lots of us were supporting each other if we found it tricky, we realise that this team work is so important.

We had a joint Circuit Training session with the other P5 class, it was exhausting and great fun!

We have been exploring Spring and what are signs of Spring. We had a Spring Scavenger Hunt for outdoor learning. We worked with the other P5 class and searched in the school grounds for signs of Spring. We then brought our materials into the classroom and created Spring information posters that we then presented to both classes. Mrs McCartney thought that our presentations were fantastic!

We created fantastic art pictures, which show an awareness and recognition of detail of Spring. Mrs McCartney was delighted with them!

Things to remember:
*Family Learning Afternoon for Maths at 2pm on Monday 24th April.
*Futsal sessions begin Wednesday 26th April- PE kits in class are fine to wear.

Happy weekend!

Eggtastic …

Easter Fun in P5A…
What a busy week!

We had a joint PE session with the other P5 in the hall this week. We danced to Go Noodle and the people that put in the MOST effort got to pick the songs to dance to! Mrs Matos and McCartney couldn’t keep up with us!

We sadly said goodbye to Callum Crocker this week as his very last day at Springfield Primary is today. We surprised him by having a party on Thursday afternoon that his mum also came to!
We would like to wish Callum and his family all the very best in their new home and school.

Zak, Callum, Ruairidh, Rory, Finlay Bisset and Jamie all went round the classes this week raising money for charity. We had to guess the age of the bunny and the winner from this class was…Samuel!!!
What a delighted boy he was!

We were very lucky to have another visit from the British Legion this week. We learned a lot about being in the Royal Navy and how ships operated.

P4 were fantastic sharing their learning with our class this week. We learned all about Ancient Egypt. They had created lots of activities for us. We made lots, including 3D pyramids and canopic jars. Thank you very much Primary 4!!!

The Easter Church Service was lovely. It was so nice for us all to be together and sing our Easter songs. Mrs McCartney cried when the choir sang ‘When you Believe’ and we are sure she wasn’t the only one. Well done to Ruairidh and Paul who were our readers from our class, great job!!!

The Easter Bonnet Parade was so much fun!

Many thanks to all who supported us by helping to make the bonnets and coming along to the parade and the church.
We wish you all a happy, safe and relaxing Easter!
