P1A’s trip to Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway

Today we went on our first school trip to Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway.  We travelled there by bus and when we arrived, we got our tickets from the ticket office. We waited patiently for the steam train to arrive and then we hopped on board!

Once we were on the steam train we sat down at the tables and chairs in our carriage. We went on a return trip from Bo’ness to Manuel and during our journey we went through a dark tunnel which we really enjoyed!

When we were on the steam train the ticket conductor came along to check our tickets. We got to stamp our own train tickets! Afterwards we had our lunch on the steam train.

When we arrived at Manuel, we got off the steam train to watch the steam locomotive. It looked a little bit like Percy from Thomas the Tank Engine!

After our journey on the steam train, we went to the Museum of Scottish Railways. We looked at lots of different types of trains. One of our favourite trains was the Royal Mail train as we got to sort the post!

We got to explore lots of different trains in the museum and we even climbed on board a vintage Glasgow subway car!

After we had looked round the museum, we were asked to do a very special job. The Museum of Scottish Railways are creating a memorial wall to honour the Scottish soldiers who worked for the railways and we got to make poppies for the museum.

We had a fantastic day at Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway and we would like to thank our parent helpers who came along to help today.

Commotion in the Ocean (P1A)

In Literacy this week we have been looking at rhyming words and describing words. Miss Harrison read us ‘Commotion in the Ocean’ and we listened for rhyming words. We played ‘Cat Cosy’ on Education City, matched rhyming words on Easter eggs and matched bees and flowers that rhymed, with Miss Hardie. On Tuesday we looked at describing words for different sea animals. We looked at the shark in ‘Commotion in the Ocean’ and thought about words to describe it. We were able to describe the shark using describing words such as ‘long’, ‘fierce’ and ‘dangerous’. Afterwards we used our own adjectives to write sentences about the shark using describing words.

In Numeracy this week we continued to look at odd and even numbers. We ordered our odd and even number pebbles, wrote odd and even number sequences on our whiteboards, played ‘Crazy Golf’ on Education City and sorted our dominoes into odd and even. We also made our own ‘Odd House’ pictures and we had to make sure that our house had odd features such as one chimney or five windows.

This week we looked at creating drawings through observing and recording. As part of The Round Table Marches Magazine competition, we looked at ‘What makes Linlithgow Beautiful?’ We looked at photographs on the Burgh Beautiful website of flowers and plants in Linlithgow. We drew pictures of what we thought makes Linlithgow beautiful. Our drawings were absolutely fantastic and Miss Harrison and Miss Hardie were very pleased with how hard we worked.

We also developed our observing and recording skills this week by creating our own sea animals from Commotion in the Ocean. We drew the outlines of our favourite sea animals and then Miss Harrison enlarged our drawings. In groups, we used different materials to create our sea animals for our Commotion in the Ocean display. We will finish our display during the first week back after the holidays.

On Thursday afternoon we went into the outdoor classroom and we had an Easter egg hunt. It was a lot of fun! This week we have also been practising our Easter songs and on Friday, we went to St. Michael’s Church for our Easter Service. Miss Harrison was so proud of our behaviour, both walking to the church and during the Easter Service. We would like to wish everyone a happy Easter and we hope that you have a lovely, happy and safe holiday.

Counting in 2s and the Badly Behaved Bus (P1A)

This week we have been learning the ‘-y’, ‘oa’ and ‘ow’ sounds.  We matched ‘oa’ words and pictures, highlighted ‘oa’ words in the story ‘Oakley the Toad’, played ‘Goat Load’ on Education City and practised writing ‘oa’ words and sentences on our whiteboards and in our literacy jotters. When we were learning the ‘ow’ sound we played ‘ow’ bingo, wrote ‘ow’ words with rainbow chalk, made ‘oa’ and ‘ow’ words with sounds in hoops and played an ‘oa’ and ‘ow’ Snakes and Ladders game.

On Monday afternoon Miss Harrison read us a story called ‘The Badly Behaved Bus’. We spoke to our chatty partners about all the things that the bus did that were naughty. We made Wanted posters to try and catch the badly behaved bus. We used a title, included a picture of the badly behaved bus and wrote a sentence about what he was wanted for. Can you believe that he drove over roundabouts and ruined the flowers and soaked people with puddles! We were able to use a joining word in our sentences and we worked really hard on our posters.

In Numeracy and Maths, we have been learning to count in 2s. We looked at counting in 2s and using even numbers. We painted the even numbers on our Splat Square, ordered even number pebbles, found the missing even numbers, played ‘Deep Discoveries’ on Education City and we made our own Mr Even characters! We have started to look at odd numbers but we will continue to practise counting on in 2s and finding odd and even numbers next week.

On Thursday we went to the Community Wing to continue to practise our movement skills. We were able to share with others and take turns and we worked really well together in our teams. Well done to our fantastic gymnasts who took part in the ‘Linlithgow School of Gymnastics’ show last weekend.

Fairtrade in P1A

This week we learned the ‘igh’ sound.  We made ‘igh’ words with sounds on lightbulbs, practised writing ‘igh’ with rainbow writing, played ‘Fright in the Night’ on Education City, drew ‘igh’ pictures and practised writing ‘igh’ in our handwriting booklets. We also revised all the vowel digraphs that we have learned so far. We played Vowel Snakes and Ladders, played Bingo with ‘ee’ words, made ‘ai’ with play dough and wrote ‘ai’ and ‘ay’ words on our whiteboards. Using our sounds, we have been reading words in our reading books and writing words and sentences in our literacy jotters.

In Numeracy and Maths, we have been learning to find two more and two less than with numbers to 20. We have also been revising comparing numbers to 20 and ordering numbers to 20. This week we have also been using ten frames to help us to talk about how we ‘see’ numbers. We have been making different numbers on our ten frames and we have been revising our number bonds on our ten frames too. Next term we will be looking at subtracting so we will be using our ten frames to help us with our subtraction facts to 10.

This week we have been learning about Fairtrade. We watched a video called ‘Pablo the Super Banana’ about how bananas are grown and how they end up in our shops. It also told us that when we see the Fairtrade mark on food, it means that the farmers that grew them got the fair amount of money for the work they did. We also played ‘Fairtrade Bingo’ to learn about different Fairtrade products. Afterwards we designed our own Fairtrade footballs for the Linlithgow Fairtrade Partnership Competition. On Thursday afternoon we went to a Fairtrade assembly and some of us were awarded a certificate for our outstanding Fairtrade football designs.

Flying inventions in P1A!

This week we have been learning the ‘ea’ sound and our new common words are ‘some’ and ‘come’. We wrote ‘ea’ words on leaves, practised reading ‘ea’ words playing Roll & Read and playing an ‘ea’ words memory game, wrote ‘ea’ words on our whiteboards, played ‘A Day by the Sea’ on Education City and wrote ‘ea’ words and sentences in our literacy jotters.

For writing this week we made posters for our own flying inventions! We looked at features of a poster and made sure that our posters included a title, a picture and a short sentence. We also tried to make our posters colourful.

In Numeracy & Maths we have been learning to order numbers to 20 and find numbers one more/one less with numbers to 20. We played ordering games on the laptops and smartboard, ordered our number pebbles from largest to smallest, played larger/smaller number games with dominoes, found numbers one more/one less than and worked with a partner to cut out numbers to 20 and put them in the correct order. Next we will be looking at finding two more/two less  than with numbers to 20.

Here are some suggested activities for the children to do if the weather continues:

• Practise reading, saying & writing the ‘ea’ sound. Have a go at writing ‘ea’ words such as ‘read’, ‘seat’, ‘mean’ and ‘cheap’.

• Although we haven’t started learning the ‘igh’ sound in class, practise reading, saying & writing the ‘igh’ sound. Have a go at writing ‘igh’ words such as ‘light’, ‘night’ and ‘fright’.

• Practise reading common words in the sounds/words tubs. Have a go at writing the common words.

• Read your reading book. Draw a comic strip of the beginning, middle and end of your story.

• Practise ordering numbers to 20 and beyond. If you google ‘Topmarks’ and then type in ‘Caterpillar Ordering’ then you will find an online ordering game.

• Practise finding numbers one more/one less than with numbers to 20. You could use a number line for support. Although we haven’t started this in class, you could find numbers two more/two less than with numbers to 20.

• We will be learning about money after Easter so you could practise identifying coins to £2.

• Make a poster about a method of transport and try to include a title, picture and short sentence. Can you make your poster colourful?

• With adult help, use the internet to research about a method of transport. Put in key words to find information. You could also look for images of transport from the past

 

Thomas renamed in P1A!

This week we have been revising all sounds learned so far. We have been practising our handwriting and writing words containing our sounds, we have been making our digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh, ai & ay) with play dough, we have been sorting words according to their sounds and we have been matching words to pictures. On Tuesday we went out into the playground and wrote our digraphs on the ground with chalk.

This week we also learned the ‘ee’ sound. We wrote ‘ee’ words in a tree, wrote ‘ee’ sentences on our whiteboards, looked for ‘ee’ words using magnifying glasses, played Roll and Read and wrote ‘ee’ words and sentences in our literacy jotters. We also played ‘Meet the Sheep’ on Education City.

This week we invented our own characters! Miss Harrison read ‘The Snowy Surprise’ and we looked at the different characters in Thomas & Friends. We listened to the theme tune and identified some of the adjectives to describe the characters. Afterwards, we matched pictures of the characters to different adjectives. Then we drew pictures of our own engines and wrote sentences to describe our characters. There was even an engine called Miss Harrison! We were able to use adjectives and capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.

In Numeracy & Maths this week, we were finding the larger and smaller number and then the largest and smallest number with numbers to 20. We also looked at ordering numbers to 20. We played ‘Eggs to Order’ on the smartboard, sorted our number pebbles into ‘smaller than 10’ and ‘larger than 10’, played a game with dominoes where the person with the larger number got to keep the dominoes and we also ordered our number pebbles.

This week we were also learning to describe the position of items using everyday words. We played position and movement games on Education City, played bingo and a memory game using words such as on, under, behind, between, beside and next to and we also played a directions game.

This week we also learned about the history of flight. We watched a video called ‘Man’s Early Flight Attempts’ and looked at the different inventions and ways that people tried to fly. We also looked at the invention of the hot air balloon and discussed the similarities & difference between the Wright Flyer & a modern day plane. Afterwards, we made our own hot air balloons using a variety of materials such as feathers, oil pastels, material, crepe paper, shiny paper and pens.

Magic Train Ride (P1A)

As part of our Transport focus, this week we compared trains today and trains in the past. We looked at steam trains and we looked at trains in other countries such as the ‘Bullet’ train in Japan. We listened to a story called ‘Magic Train Ride’ and we discussed where we would go if we could go anywhere on a magic train ride (real or imaginary). In our literacy jotters, we wrote about our own magical train rides. We have been working hard to use our sounds to spell words and use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. We also made our own ‘Magic Train’ pictures using oil pastels and by drawing different 2D shapes. Don’t they look great!

This week our new sounds were ‘ai’ and ‘ay’. We played a pairs game with ‘ai’ words, made an ‘ai’ graffiti wall, made ‘ai’ with play dough and practised writing ‘ai’ in a spelling activity. When learning the ‘ay’ sound, we practised writing ‘ay’ words on our whiteboards, made ‘ay’ with loose parts, wrote ‘ay’ sentences and looked for ‘ay’ words using a magnifying glass.

This week our common words were ‘are’ and ‘they’. On Friday, we revised some of the common words that we have learned over the past few weeks. We made common words graffiti walls, practised writing our common words on our whiteboards, made sentences by cutting out words, played a common words Snakes & Ladders game and played ‘Ready or Not’ on Education City.

On Thursday afternoon we went to the Community Wing hall to continue to practise and develop our motor skills. We were jumping, kicking, dribbling, running, throwing, catching and balancing.

In Numeracy and Maths we have continued to learn about pictograms. We made our own pictograms on Thursday and we answered questions about different pictograms. This week we have also been counting objects to 20 and beyond using one-to-one correspondence. We had to make sure that we didn’t miss out any objects or count any twice! We completed a transport counting activity, worked with a partner to give them different amounts to count out, counted out different amounts using loose parts and played different counting games on the smartboard.

Non-stop, Non-fiction! (P1A)

In Numeracy and Maths, we have been learning to find numbers after, before and between with numbers to 20. We found numbers after and before on number lines, played ‘Eggs to Order’ on the computer, highlighted the numbers after on challenge cards and used our knowledge of after, before and between to sequence numbers. This week we have also been learning about pictograms. We played ‘Summer Fair’ on Education City and had to answer questions using pictograms. We also made our own pictograms.

This week our new sounds were ‘th’ and ‘wh’ and our new common words were ‘be’ and ‘she’. We played a memory game with ‘th’ words, made ‘th’ with loose parts, practised writing ‘th’ words and sentences and played ‘The Three Paths’ on Education City. When learning ‘wh’, we made ‘wh’ with play dough, drew ‘wh’ pictures and played a game to practise reading ‘wh’ words. We have also been writing some of our common words on our whiteboards.

This week we have been looking at non-fiction texts and talking about their features. We looked at the contents page, the labels and the photographs. For writing this week, we used our knowledge of cars to write our own car facts. We were able to use a capital letter, full stop and finger spaces. We knew lots of facts as we looked at photographs of cars from the past and we talked about how cars have changed through the years. Did you know that the first car only had space for two people? We also looked at how cars work and watched a video on how car engines work! On Friday we watched ‘Reach Out Reporter’ and listened to facts about hammerhead sharks and volcanoes. We have enjoyed learning through non-fiction texts and we will continue to look at different types of texts every week.

If I Built a Car (P1A)

This week we were learning to use our sounds to write words and sentences. We read the story ‘If I Built a Car’ and we talked about what our cars would be like if we could build a car. We wrote sentences to describe our cars using a capital letter, full stop and finger spaces. We had lots of good ideas!

This week we were finding out about different ways in which transport has changed from past to present. We looked at pictures of transport from the past and sorted different types of transport correctly in order onto a timeline. We played with our train set and made tickets, used our cars and car repair sheets to be mechanics and played in our transport museum.

This week our new sounds were ‘sh’ and ‘ch’ and our new common words were ‘go’ and ‘we’. We made ‘sh’ with shells and play dough, used our Ipad to help us write ‘sh’ words, played Roll & Read to practise reading ‘sh’ words and wrote ‘sh’ words and sentences. When learning ‘ch’, we drew ‘ch’ pictures, labelled ‘ch’ pictures, played ‘Cheeping Chicks’ on Education City and wrote ‘ch’ words and sentences.

This week we have been learning to sequence numbers forwards and backwards to 20. We have been finding missing numbers on a number line, ordering our number pebbles from 20 to 0, playing sequencing and ordering games on the smartboard and making numbers to 20 using tens and units.

In numeracy and maths, we have also been learning to sort objects & pictures in different ways. We sorted information on a Carroll Diagram in our workbooks. We also sorted shells, loose parts and toys according to their size, colour or shape and we were able to explain to Miss Harrison how we had sorted the items.

Transport and Transport Museums (P1A)

This week we finished learning our number bonds to 10 and completed our work on how to solve missing number equations. We have started to look at numbers to 20. We began with counting to 20 and sequencing the numbers to 20. We put our number pebbles in the correct sequence, found missing numbers on a number line, played a sequencing game on the smartboard and completed dot to dot patterns to 20.

This week our new sounds were ‘y’ and ‘z’. We were very excited as we have now learned all of our initial sounds! We made ‘y’ with play dough and rainbow writing, practised writing uppercase and lowercase letters, made our own yellow submarines and played ‘Yellow Yo-Yo’ on Education City. When learning about ‘z’, we made ‘z’ with shells and wooden blocks, practised writing ‘z’ with colourful pens, wrote ‘z’ and ‘z’ words on our whiteboards and made our own buzzing bees!

This week we started to talk about what we already know about transport. We knew that there are lots of different types of vehicles, that transport takes you anywhere you want to go, that tractors have lots of engine parts and that some cars run on oil or electricity. We then told Miss Harrison what we would like to learn about transport. In pairs, we worked together to make houses and different types of transport for our classroom display. We used our cutting skills to cut out different shapes and used a variety of materials to make our display. Doesn’t it look great! We have also started to turn our role play area into a transport museum. We have a ticket office, an area to learn about transport and we even have a café!
