After learning about 2D and 3D shapes, this week were learning about symmetry. We looked at symmetrical pictures with one line of symmetry. We used mirrors to find pictures with one line of symmetry, made symmetrical monster pictures, designed our own symmetrical butterflies and played symmetry games on the smartboard.

 

This week we also learned how to write the number 6 and revised writing the numbers 0-5. We made the number 6 with tin foil, painted the number 6 with our fingers and practised writing our numbers in different ways. Using dice, we revised writing the numbers 0-5.

     

This week we revised the sounds that we have learned so far and used these sounds to build words. We made our sounds with play dough, made words in hula hoops, built words on the magnetic boards, played a pairs game with word pictures and sounds and used cut out letters to make words.

When we came back to school after the long weekend, there was an African Surprise in our tuff tray. There was a giraffe, an elephant, a zebra, a gazelle and a monkey playing in the sand! Miss Harrison read us a story called ‘Handa’s Surprise’. We looked at the different animals in the story and we realised that the same animals were in our tuff tray! We made a list of animals that we would find in Scotland and compared it to the animals in our story. Over the next few weeks, we are going to be comparing aspects of Scotland with those in Kenya. Look out for our African Surprise display which we have just started working on this week!

P.S. We won the Peg Challenge again this week!

As part of Scottish Maths week, we have been learning about 2D shapes. We used circles, triangles, squares and rectangles to make robot pictures, used 2D shapes to make our own pictures and patterns, played 2D shape games on the smartboard and used 2D shapes to create rockets!

 

      

This week we have continued to practise our number formation and learned how to write the numbers 4 and 5. We used spaghetti, play dough, pipe cleaners and cubes to make our numbers and practised writing our numbers on the whiteboards and with Miss Harrison.

          

          

Our two new sounds this week were ‘p’ and ‘n’. We used our new sounds to make words such as ‘pat’, ‘nap’, ‘ant’ and ‘pan’. We practised writing the ‘p’ sound on post-it notes and in the squidgy paint bags and used our magnetic boards to build words. When learning our ‘n’ sound, we used play dough to make our sound and drew ‘n’ pictures and wrote ‘n’ words on a graffiti wall. We also looked for words with our new sounds in our reading books and played ‘n’ words snap!

                 

On Friday we went to the gym hall with our P7 buddies to take part in some Zumba for Fitness Week! Thankfully we have the long weekend to recover!

P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂

This week we have started to learn our initial sounds. We have been working very hard to read, make, say and write the ‘a’ sound and the ‘t’ sound. On Wednesday, we used our new sounds to build a word! We were able to make, say and write ‘at’. To learn our sounds, we used play dough, played ICT games, made our sounds with paint and practised writing our sounds with rainbow writing, graffiti walls and whiteboards.

     

    

On Friday, we had our first visit to the school library. We will go to the library every Friday so that we can choose texts from a wide range of genres.

  

    

In numeracy this week, we have been continuing to work on our number formation. We revised writing 0-2 and learned about the number 3. We used jewels, counters and Lego to make 3, practised formation on the car mats, smartboard and whiteboards and used pipe cleaners to make the number 3.

   

   

This week we continued to learn about 3D shapes. We played 3D shape games on the smartboard and laptops, used 3D shapes to build, used our play dough to make 3D shapes and used our multilinking cubes to make different cubes and cuboids. During our outdoor play on Wednesday, we used our construction materials to make cubes, cuboids and triangular prisms!

    

  

On Friday we found out that we won Class of the Week! As a reward, we got five minutes extra play time. Later on Friday we also found out that we won the peg challenge! Miss Harrison was extremely proud of us.

P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂

On Tuesday afternoon we had our first PE lesson. We learned to develop our movement skills and to take turns with others to use the equipment safely. We enjoyed skipping, throwing & catching with the balls and bean bags, jumping with the space hoppers, balancing on the bench and running.

  

This week we have continued to work with our buddies to learn how to use the laptops. The P7 buddies showed us how to log on to the laptops, play games, draw pictures and look for information on the internet.

In Literacy we have been learning to listen for different sounds. Miss Harrison played different sounds and we had to identify the first and the last sound. We found the sneezing, baby crying & toilet flushing sounds very funny! On Thursday we also used our listening skills to find rhyming words. We looked at the rhyming words in Room on the Broom and played a rhyming game on Education City.

In numeracy we have been learning to form ‘0’, ‘1’ and ‘2’. We used our fingers and cotton buds to paint different numbers, made 0-2 with counters & jewels, used play dough to make numbers and practised writing the numbers in our workbooks and on the whiteboards and smartboard.

  

On Thursday we learned about 3D shapes. We looked at cones, cylinders, spheres, pyramids, cubes and cuboids. We used the 3D shapes to build towers and robots, played 3D shape games on the smartboard and used our play dough to make spheres, cubes and cuboids.

P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂

Welcome to our first blog post! We have had a busy first week in P1A and have enjoyed catching up with old friends and making new friends.  Miss Harrison has been so impressed at how well we have settled into P1 and how quickly we were able to follow the school routines. Here are some of our photos from our first few days in P1A…

             

    

        

Miss Harrison has also been very impressed with our drawing skills. We drew fantastic pictures of ourselves on our first day of school.

      

On Wednesday, we learned about children’s rights. We discovered that children have the right to a bed, the right to a home, the right to play, the right to food and the right to go to school. Have a look at our fabulous class charter! We made our own Lego minifigs and displayed them on the wall with rights that we are entitled to at school.

Today our P7 buddies helped us to log on to the school laptops using a username and password. They also helped us to find the Google Chrome icon and together, we used key words to find specific information.

Our P7 buddies have been a huge help this week. They have supported us in the playground at break and lunch, have assisted us in getting our lunch in the dining hall and have helped us to settle into P1. Thank you very much to the P7 buddies for their wonderful support!

P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂

Today, Sammy and Zara represented our class in Springfield’s Got Talent. Sammy sang ‘We Built This City’ and Zara played ‘Hot Cross Buns’ on her glockenspiel. Both acts were absolutely fantastic and we were very proud of them for performing in front of such a big audience.

Today we had a magician in P1A! Thomas performed some magic tricks in class and dazzled us with his magic. Well done, Thomas!

What a talented bunch we are! Singing, playing musical instruments, performing magic tricks and also writing our own books! Today we finished our own story books and they are ready to share with other classes and then people at home. This week, we looked at blurbs and we learned that they tell you what the story is going to be about. We wrote our own blurbs for our books and finished our illustrations. Miss Harrison said that she was so proud of us as we worked very hard and created brilliant books!

We can’t wait to share our books with our families!

P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂

This week we have been learning to count in jumps in 10s and 5s. We played games on Education City, found missing numbers in sequences to 100, ordered numbers in the correct order and used our knowledge of counting on in 5s and 10s to connect the dots. Some of us were able to count up beyond 100! We also looked at sorting information into Carroll diagrams and reading and making graphs.

Soon there will be 19 new story books in the world! We have been working really hard to write our own stories using characters and settings which we created ourselves. This week we looked at features of a front cover to help us to design our own front covers for our books. Our titles are fantastic and we put a lot of effort into our illustrations. Next week we will complete our books and before bringing them home, share them with P1B and P1/2.

On Monday Mrs Goddard came to visit us to talk to us about being a doctor. She told us about what she does to help people. Mrs Goddard showed us some of her equipment. We got to use the stethoscope to listen to our hearts, we got our oxygen levels checked and some of us even got our blood pressure monitored! We asked Mrs Goddard lots of questions about being a doctor and learned about how doctors help people in the community.

On Wednesday, we had a mini Sports Day with Mrs Reid in the hall. We took part in different potted sports such as hockey dribbling, football dribbling, hurdles and angels and we even had some races! Hopefully the rain will stay off and we’ll be able to take part in a whole school Sports Day next Wednesday!

Today we attended the P7 Leaver’s Assembly. The P7’s did a fantastic job of sharing their Springfield memories with us through music and drama. At the end of the assembly, we surprised the P7’s with videos from each of us to our buddies! We would like to thank the P7’s for being such wonderful and friendly buddies and for helping us settle into P1. We wish you all the best of luck in S1!

P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂

This week we have turned into authors! On Monday, we started to invent our own characters to share with others. We looked at our favourite story characters and then drew our own. To help us to describe our characters, we learned about adjectives. We played games on the smartboard and computer to identify the adjectives in sentences, we found the missing adjectives in sentences and we wrote our own sentences containing adjectives. Once we were amazing at using adjectives, we wrote some sentences to describe our characters in an interesting way.

   

On Wednesday, we started to explore the setting of a story. We know that this is where the story takes place. We worked with a partner to read different Biff, Chip & Kipper books and we told Miss Harrison where our story was set. Later on we looked at different story setting pictures and we were able to tell Miss Harrison stories that we knew that took place in each of the different settings. We are currently working very hard with our own story settings and drawing and writing about them. As part of our setting focus, we used Lego and building blocks to build different settings. Next week we are going to start planning our own books using our settings and characters!

In numeracy and maths this week, we have been using our addition and subtraction skills to add and subtract with money. We have also been using coins to pay the exact value for items. We used magnetic coins and toy coins to make different money amounts and played different money games on Education City. This week we have also been continuing to learn about fractions and using halves and quarters.

This week we were very lucky to have an Athletics session and a Better Movers Better Thinkers session. On Monday, Mr Stewart (who is a PE Officer for West Lothian) came to take us for gym. We looked at developing lots of movement skills whilst making our brains think! We practised throwing the ball up in the air, clapping and then catching the ball and lots of other different movements. We then put these movements together to make a sequence.

As part of our People Who Help Us learning focus, we had a visit from the Dogs Trust on Thursday afternoon. We learned how to look after dogs and what the Dogs Trust do to look after dogs in their care. Next week we will continue to learn about ways in which people in the community help us.

P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂

This week we have been learning the ‘au’ sound. We drew pictures with the ‘au’ sound, looked for pictures with the ‘au’ sound, used ‘au’ words to find the missing words in sentences and practised reading and writing ‘au’ words. We also revised all of our common words.

   

At the start of this week we concluded our subtraction focus and finished looking at missing number equations. We looked at subtraction sums such as ? – 2 = 8 and we used different strategies to work out the number at the start. In maths we have also been learning about symmetry. We were able to create symmetrical pictures and used finger painting to make our own symmetrical butterflies (just like the ones that we have in class). During free play, Thomas and Daniel built a fantastic symmetrical castle!

       

What a busy week we have had in maths! We also learned about fractions this week! Miss Harrison was very impressed as we were able to find halves and quarters of shapes. We could even find three quarters of a shape! Our learning activities included using our playdough to make halves and quarters of objects, colouring in different fractions of shapes, playing fractions games on the smartboard and laptop and making our own pizzas!

 

  

 

On Monday morning we had some very special visitors in our classroom. Chloe’s Auntie Heather and two of her colleagues, Leo and Liam came to talk to us about being in the Police. They told us about all the things that they do to help people and keep them safe and we asked them LOTS of questions! We got to see the police kit and try on the hats and jackets. Heather, Leo and Liam also told us about the different police transport. They brought a police bike and a police van which we were very excited to see! We got to go in the police van and turn on the siren. We really enjoyed going in the back of the police van!

For our writing this week, we wrote thank you letters to Heather, Leo & Liam. Miss Harrison couldn’t believe how hard we worked! Our handwriting was fantastic and we drew detailed pictures of our favourite part of the visit. We used our sounds to write words and we created our own word bank with tricky words that we might need. Miss Harrison gave our letters to Mrs Lee to pass on to Heather, Leo & Liam. We loved having visitors in our class. Thank you!

Over the last few weeks we have been learning about the life cycle of butterflies. We had our own caterpillars to look after and once they went into their chrysalis, we put them into a butterfly pavilion. At the start of this week, some of our butterflies started to hatch! We have done an excellent job of looking after them, but today we released them into their natural habitat.

P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂

This week we have been using our addition and subtraction facts to 10 to solve problems. We have been using our knowledge of number bonds to find different ways to make numbers to 10 and we have been creating our own number sentences. This week we also started to look at missing number equations (we are very clever)! We looked at subtraction sums such as 7 – ? = 3 and we used different strategies to work out the missing number. Next week we will continue to work on missing number equations.

As part of our measurement focus, this week we learned to use non-standard units (cubes, cups, spoons, containers) to measure capacity. We also learned to compare and describe capacity by looking at which containers could hold more/less liquid. We enjoyed using the water to compare how much liquid each container could hold (our classroom is still drying out) and using the cubes to estimate and then measure the capacity of different containers.

This week we learned the ‘aw’ sound and three new common words, ‘said’, ‘big’ and ‘could’. We practised writing our new sound and words, drew ‘aw’ pictures, played games containing the ‘aw’ sound and common words on the smartboard and computer, unscrambled sentences and found the missing ‘aw’ words in sentences. We managed to find some of our common words in our reading books this week.

As part of our Local Community focus, we worked with a partner to draw/write about what we like and/or would change about Linlithgow. Some of the things that we like about Linlithgow are Kelly’s, Tesco, the parks, our school, our houses, the flowers, the wildlife, the museum and B&M! Some of us felt that Linlithgow could be a bit cleaner and some of us wanted to change the weather! We used Google Maps to locate some places in our local area. We enjoyed looking at the street views!

This week, we also designed our own Happy Towns. We had roads and paths made of chocolate, ice cream shops, big parks, lots of flowers, swimming pools and rainbow houses!
