P4A Blog Week Ending 20.9.19
Hope you all had a lovely September holiday weekend!
Literacy and English
In reading we read our books to Ms McAlpine and discussed our reading comprehensions with each other. We had some ERIC time (Everyone Reading in Class) to enjoy reading of our choice.
In writing this week, we have been learning to write a recount of a story on a Scottish theme about Robert the Bruce not giving up even though he lost six battles as he shared a cave with a spider who found it difficult to spin a web but didn’t give up.
In punctuation we were revising when to use commas to make the meaning of sentences clearer. We have also started to learn that homophones are words that sound the same but are spelt differently and have different meanings. We were amazed how many examples we knew. e.g. sea and see, whether and weather, to, two and too, read and read, stationary and stationery. We even found a word that had four different meanings (rite, right, Wright, and write)!
Numeracy and Mathematics
In Numeracy and Mathematics we have been continuing with place value, practising adding tens and hundreds to a number. We used concrete materials to make up our own numbers and try to show the values using unit, tens and hundred cubes and linking cubes.
We have also been learning about data handling. We made a bar graph of the different temperatures in Scotland compared to India that we recorded last week. We also recorded data that we produced about the colour of a dragon and it’s habitat and plotted it on a graph. As an extension we made our own class surveys of favourite colours and sports and recorded on a bar graph.
Learning across the Curriculum
Our focus in P.E this week was to practice our passing skills in badminton. We practised with one person in the circle passing to everyone in turn in the circle and they passed back to the person in the middle. We managed some really good passes and will continue to work on getting the right force to be able to keep the shuttlecock moving.
We have been researching India on the netbooks this week to get the answers to all the things that we wanted to know about India. In groups, we were given a few areas to research. We found out more about why India was so hot and found out the highest temperature they had ever had! We found out about their transport, food they liked to eat, clothes they liked to wear and about all the beautiful artwork in India.
We have been learning about growth mindset this week. We found out that the brain is a muscle and can change if we learn new things and make a decision to change the way we think and do things in a more positive way. We talked about how we can find things challenging but we can demonstrate persistence to improve our performance. We learned that we will all make mistakes and that is what helps us to learn new things.
We have been learning about the body with Mrs Begarnie and have a teaching anatomy skeleton in the classroom!
Achievements
As it was a short week, the achievements have been carried forward to be given out next week.
