Having lots of fun teaching and learning with P2/1!

P1c Learning Update 28th March

We now have an engineer’s corner set up in the classroom and are enjoying using  this for both building and designing our own constructions.

This week’s team challenge also involved building as we had to work together to build a bridge for the Three Billy Goats Gruff.  The bridge had to be 50cm wide and be able to carry the weight of the three goats.  As you will see from the photographs, the groups used different construction materials so in some ways the challenge wasn’t very fair! However we have been learning all about being “resilient” in P1c and none of the groups gave up.

This term our topic is The Farm and part of this  has been learning about different animals.  We have particularly enjoyed learning about sheep and were rather surprised to learn that sheep can give us milk!

In RME we read the story of The Lost Sheep and drew some fantastic pictures to show different parts  the story.

We were delighted last week to welcome Mrs Burns (who is a parent of another P1 child at our school) into our class to read us a story.  We are currently taking part in the First Minister’s Reading Challenge and we are trying to read 100 books before the summer holidays!

Mrs Burns read us a story in German and it was all about goats!

As part of the First Minister’s Reading Challenge we all received Reading passports. Each week we complete a review of a book that we have read and give it a star rating. This week’s book was My Big Brother Boris by Liz Pichon.

Here are a few of our reviews.

P1c Primary Engineers – 17th March

As part of British Science Week we have been revisiting our learning about engineers. We love to build things but this week we have also been learning about designing things too.

Along with lots of other classes in school we are taking part in the Primary Engineers competition which is quite tricky for P1! We have been reading lots of robot stories to help us get some ideas for designing and making our own robots and also thinking about jobs that robots could do to help people.

We worked with a partner to make our robots and could choose whether to use construction materials or junk. Everyone’s model had to include a “button” to turn it on and off!

We drew pictures of our robots and labelled them for the competition. We also had to write a sentence explaining what our robot could do. Here are just a few of them.

Sophia’s mum came into class to tell us all about her job as a civil engineer.  We enjoyed looking at the fantastic photos of the Queensferry Crossing as it was being built and also seeing some real engineers’ plans.  We asked lots of questions.

Thank you very much to Sophia’s mum for leaving her special Health and Safety clothing for us to try on too!

P1c Learning Update 9th March

As part of our Percy the Park Keeper topic we had been learning about foxes and lots of the stories we have read recently have included foxes too.  We  have learned that foxes can jump up to 3m. We made these super fox masks and went out into the playground to see if we could jump 3m and had great fun trying – as you can see!

As part of Fair Trade Fortnight we had a visitor from Linlithgow Fair Trade group who told us all about different fair trade products.

This week our team challenge was to work together to create a puppet show telling the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff.  We had to decide who would be each of the characters and some people had to be 2 characters.  We only had 10 minutes to practise before we performed to the rest of the class.  Some of us were fantastic at speaking in “troll voices”!

On Thursday it was World Book Day and we enjoyed sharing stories with our P6 buddies. Some of us went upstairs to the P6 classrooms (that’s why there aren’t photos of everyone!) We also started our First Minister’s Reading Challenge – more information to follow soon!

P1c February Learning Update

This term as part of our learning in RME we have been talking about the golden goal “Do be kind and helpful”.  In particular we have been talking about people that who are special to us and how we can be kind and helpful to them.  We have been reading lots of stories about special people and being kind including the story of St Valentine on the 14th of February.

We liked finding how he helped people to get married even though the Emperor had forbidden it and this is why people now send cards and give gifts on St Valentine’s Day. We hope our special people liked our gifts!

One of this month’s team challenges was the Penguin Rescue.   During the challenge we had to  use  our thinking skills and work together to free the penguin from the block of ice.  However we were not allowed to smash the ice on the floor in case the penguin got damaged. As you will see from the photographs we had lots of great ideas. These ranged from everything including blowing, rubbing, and shaking.   And yes all of the penguins were rescued and none of them were damaged!!

We also completed a very different team challenge  –  to make a  farm animals poster.  In this challenge we had to practise our talking and listening skills as well as our thinking skills as we had to make sure that everyone in our team  drew different animals.  Miss McDermott was very impressed because she thought that there might have been a lot of doubles and we proved her wrong!

P1c Bird Activity Afternoon – 31 January

This afternoon we read the story Charlie Crow in the Snow by Paula Metcalf. We learned that some birds like swallows fly away to warmer countries in the winter and some birds like Charlie stay at home in Scotland.

As you will see from the photographs we then took part in three different bird themed activities.  One of these was a challenge to work with a partner to build a bird house that could stand up without support . After many attempts, some of the results were very impressive indeed!

We also made model birds using plasticine and craft materials.  Some of the girls helped Miss McDermott to prepare the resources and practised counting in 2s at the same time.

Mrs Smith helped us to make bird feeders for our gardens so that birds like Charlie won’t go hungry in the winter.  Some of us were not overly keen on this activity as you can see by our faces and we certainly didn’t want to eat them!!

PS

Apologies for some of the rather blurry pictures today – it seems the camera lens had some bird food mixture on it!

P1c Scottish Celebrations – 25th January

This week we have been listening to lots of Scottish stories and talking about Scots words. We learned that Robert Burns was famous for writing Scots songs and poems and today we celebrated his birthday by having our own Burns Supper in class.

This included toasts to the laddies and lassies which we had written ourselves and a toast to the haggis (crisps!) read by Mrs Smith.  We enjoyed our Scottish snacks which also included shortbread and tablet that Mrs Smith had kindly made for us.  As you will see from the photographs there was lots of dancing to Scottish music! At our Scottish assembly we sang Heid, Shooders, Knaps an Taes – not a traditional Scots song but a nice way to end our special Scottish morning!

P1 Christmas Party – 19 December

Everone looked super this morning in their party clothes as we enjoyed our  Christmas party with all three P1 classes together. We did some party dances and played pass the parcel and the corners game.  Thank you to Mrs Smith, Mrs Bennie and Mrs Frater for setting up ( and tidying up!) the snack.  The party ended with a special visit from Santa who was delighted to hear that we are all following the golden goals in school and trying our best to be good at home too.

P1c “Hey Ewe!” Photographs

Here are some photos from the day that we tried on our nativity costumes in class!

After our performance, we received these lovely thank you letters and pictures from the boys and girls in P3/2. They came to our class to deliver them and read them out to us. We felt very proud that they had enjoyed our first performance on the big stage!

P1c Christmas Craft Afternoon

This afternoon we were delighted to be joined in the classroom by our P6 buddies! They helped us to make some lovely Christmas decorations as you can see from the photographs.

We also learned about Christingles and that they are not actually for eating! Christingles were originally from Germany although lots of churches now have special Christingle services for children at Christmas time.

P1c Visit to the National Museum of Scotland – 13 November

Today in P1c  we were very excited as we travelled into Edinburgh by bus to visit the museum.  In the morning there was some free time to look around the animal section with some help from the P6 buddies who were also visiting the museum too. We particularly liked the animal skeletons!

After lunch we took part in a special workshop to learn about being museum engineers.  As you will see from the photographs we were very busy learning about cogs and gears and levers as we worked together to fix a clock.

Thank you very much to Mrs Spori and Mrs Ferrario for coming along to help us today and also to the P6 buddies for helping to keep us safe when we looked around the museum in the morning.

P1c Skeleton Challenges – 25th October

This week we have been reading the Funnybones stories all about 3 skeletons – a big skeleton, a little skeleton and a dog skeleton.

We have been learning why the skelton is an important part of the body and have been getting quite good at naming some of the different bones including skull, spine, ribs and pelvis.

We  practised our cutting skills to make these super Hallowe’en skeleton decorations which are going to be put up for the party in the hall.

We also enjoyed taking part in a special outdoor team challenge with our P6 buddies to make skeletons using sticks and stones. Everyone had to take part in finding the materials and then building the skeleton.

Here is a link to the Go Noodle “Bones” song that we have been singing and dancing along to in class!

P1c Pumpkin Soup Making – 24 October

It might not quite be Hallowe’en yet but P1c are getting in the mood. This morning we enjoyed  reading the story Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper, then we got busy carving pumpkins and making our own pumpkin soup.

Today we not only practised cutting the vegetables but also grating them too. After playtime we enjoyed having the soup with some bread for snack.   A big thank you to Mrs Smith and Mrs Kemsley (our student teacher from Edinburgh University) for their help this morning.

A “cracking” time in P1c – 3rd Oct

This week we have been learning the sound ‘e ‘ and the Jolly  Phonics action is to pretend that you are cracking an egg. So we decided to crack some  real eggs and  made some delicious omelettes for snack today.  Everyone passing the classroom stopped to ask what the lovely smell was! As you can see most of us enjoyed eating the omelettes too! Thank you to Mrs Smith who was our head chef today.
