Dear P7 Parents/Carers
I hope you are all safe and well. I’m trying to contact everyone to check in but as you can imagine, this is a big task and it’s taking me a while to reach you all. I thought this might be the most effective way to get an important message out to you all at once.Firstly, I want to reiterate Mrs Mill’s message that your children’s health and wellbeing is our top priority during this uncertain period. This is especially important for our Primary 7’s as we want them to be confident and in a good place mentally for their transition to high school. Please don’t allow expectations of school work to add unnecessary pressure on to them or the rest of your family.I understand that every household has different challenges at the moment. Some of you are trying to work from home; others are working as key workers; some may even face a period of unexpected unemployment. I know that for many there’s more than one child at home, which can bring about additional challenges. They may be sharing devices or you may be trying to support different stages of learning at the same time. Please know that there is no pressure from me with regards to completing all of the tasks online. I am not chasing up missed tasks or expecting children to go back and catch up on everything that’s been set. However, I do think that engaging with some learning through a ‘little and often’ approach would be beneficial to them going forward. Most of the tasks I’ve set have been designed with this in mind. It’s unrealistic for us to expect children to sit from 8:50 – 3:20 working at home each day. They will need regular breaks and maybe even some days off to do things with family (walks, garden play, helping to make dinner, etc.). Please don’t forget that there is so much learning in everyday chores. How many P7 children can work the washing machine?I also think it’s important that you hear from me that I am not concerned about the move to high school. Any learning that is missed will be picked up by teachers next year. Be reassured in knowing that we were already a little ahead of where we needed to be. Term 4 is always busy but for P7, that is an understatement. I can say with certainty that there would have been very few weeks of uninterrupted learning this term. We had trips planned as well as school visitors. The various transition programmes all begin at different times and as the weeks went on, we’d have been lucky to have a full class for a full week. We also would have spent lots of time planning and preparing our leavers assembly and we’d have had our Fitness Fortnight. I have planned for this all year and so we worked extremely hard to cover what we needed to in the first three terms, leaving us time for all that term 4 brings. We also didn’t waste time getting started at the beginning of the session as I knew all the children well from last year. Your children will begin high school in a good place academically. With all that being said, I do think it’s important for the children to engage in some learning activities going forward but not at the expense of their health and wellbeing. I will continue to post a grid of suggested activities for children to work through Monday to Thursday. We will use Fridays for feedback sessions. I will post the answers to tasks and the children will have the opportunity to self assess, share and discuss their learning. I will also hold a group video call to finish off the week. Please note that the children can see and hear me but they can only be heard and not seen. This is a great opportunity for us to connect as a class and discuss what we’ve been up to throughout the week. Even if your child hasn’t completed any tasks that week I would still encourage them to join our chat and keep connected.I will post the learning at home grid on to the blog each week to help you to plan some activities into your week, where possible. However, I must ask that you don’t use your child’s Glow details to access Teams as we must keep the platform safe, which means it is for pupils and teachers only. I realise it’s a little daunting leaving it up to the children to manage but feel free to sit beside them and help them if they need it. This is actually good practice for next year when they will be responsible for managing their own home learning. Most high schools use Teams for this already. Finally, something I won’t be covering this term is the relationships, sexual health and parenthood topic. This requires a safe space for children to learn and ask questions and it’s not possible for us to recreate that safe space online. Younger classes will cover this when school resumes but as our P7s may not be back to LVPS I am offering to send you the national resource with the specific lessons I planned to cover. I would not suggest you try to follow the lesson plans as they are designed for a classroom/group setting. I suggest reading over the plans and then perhaps have a conversation with your child if you think they would cope with that. If this is something you’d be interested in, please send me an email requesting this. You can get my email address from your child or contact the school office. I must ask that you do not give the resource to your child to read as it is not written for children. If you would rather not cover the topic or you find your child is not in a place to discuss it with you, please just leave it. It will all be covered again at high school. I just want to give you the option to have those discussions if you feel your child would benefit from it.I hope I’ve been able to put your minds at ease. This is not the final term we hoped for but we will make sure the children get some kind of leavers celebration. The children have started planning for how we might do this remotely instead of holding the usual assembly. If you need any help or support going forward, please feel free to send me an email. You can also contact the school office at wllivingstonvillage-ps@westlothian.org.ukGive your child a giant hug from me and take care.Mrs Brodie

Day 4 of the Clyne Caterpillars and they are growing nicely. Did you know that the first thing a caterpillar eats when it is born is its own eggshell before munching on the leaf of the host plant.

P7 Home School Week 1
Mrs B
It’s been a really difficult week as we all learned how to work from home. Most of P7 have been able to access Microsoft Teams and despite a few glitches, have completed many of the learning tasks available to them. I’ve been very impressed with how creative they have been in solving issues and the variety of ways in which they have shared their learning with me and with the class. I’m finding it really challenging to keep up with all the messages and emails so I’m going to start posting the answers to Maths Assignments at the end of the week for everyone to self-correct. I really enjoyed launching our Share your Home Learning channel as there were lots of good conversations going on. I like sharing book recommendations on Epic as it’s great to see the variety of texts being enjoyed. I very much miss seeing all those cheeky faces every day and I can’t wait until I can give every single one of them a big hug. I’m so, so proud to be their teacher.Katy
Throughout this week I have learnt a lot about Microsoft Teams and how to use it. I have enjoyed working in my own house. I am enjoying PE with Joe Wicks because it is keeping me fit and healthy. I miss all of my friends and being able to talk to them during break and lunch. Learning at home has been hard at times but I’m used to it now. I also made a really good smoothie.Cameron
I found working at home more fun than I thought it would be because I’m still having fun and I can still talk to my friends while I’m doing work but I still miss school and seeing my friends faces and playing outside with them.Finlay
This week hasn’t been like usual, and how have I felt about working at home? It’s ok I guess. We have maths problems every day and we get to choose the work we do so it is quite fun. My favourite task is Joe Wicks because I miss PE. We done ratios and I found it in the middle. I found Home Learning very interesting this way as we could discuss more. I miss school because I miss seeing people and being able to play sports with them or something.Silvester
I learnt what ratios are. My favourite task is The Body Coach TV P.E. lessons! I thought home learning was going to be too easy but no it’s still quite tricky. What I miss about school is running outside a lot.Calum W
I enjoyed learning ratios I found it quite easy. I enjoyed doing Joe Wicks PE sessions they were hard but fun. I also learned how to do a bunch of stuff on teams even though it does not work that great.Matthew
In the first week of home school I found team confusing to use. My favourite home learning task was the cooking/baking, I made Peacemaker Mud Pies. I don’t really miss anything from school but my suggestion for next week is to bring Bonnie on a live video.Kyle
My favourite thing about home school this week was doing the problems of the day because it was interesting to use Teams for the first time.Cade
I like problems of the day because it is fun, helps you to revise your math and it’s a challenge. I don’t like being stuck in my house though.Murray
I learned how to do ratios. Working at home is difficult as teams is bad right now but it’s also fun. My favourite activity is PE. Home learning was what I expected. The good bits are we don’t have a lot of work and the work is easy. I miss assemblies from school.Leon
“School” has been strange this week because normally we would be doing work at our desks with a lot of people around, but instead, we are at home doing our work online. Despite how weird it feels, this week was actually quite fun, and it’s cool that we’re still doing P.E. Overall, I have had quite a fun week.Luke
I think working at home is a bit easier than normal most of the time. But it’s harder to self-learn. Ratios were quite a lot of fun. Homework was fun sharing with every one and seeing what they did.Callan
I downloaded all the sheets to my computer because teams didn’t work properly. I don’t like not seeing everyone or having chats. Ratios was good. The videos helped me learn how to do the sheets. PE with Joe is hard but fun at the same time. I like that I have lots of breaks and can work after and before normal school times.Sri
This week I found learning at home quite easy but difficult sometimes when teams is not working. Some of the work was a bit difficult. The good thing about is that we have more time to relax, have free time and we have our phones.
What have I learned this week? This week we were doing ratios it was fun because we learned something new and they were easy.
What has been my favourite activity/ home learning task? Joe wicks workouts because they were fun and some workouts were easy and some were hard.
Is home learning what I expected it to be? No I thought it would be much easier.
What do I miss about school? I miss my friends, classmates, teacher and other school staff but at least we can communicate with them. I miss taking to other people in other classes.
Maybe next week we can do something else for P.E.Hayley B
This week I found learning at home was pretty easy but some of it was difficult. The good thing is about learning from home is that we can relax more while doing our work. This week we were working on ratios, I think I have seen them before but they were quite easy and something different to learn about. Every morning we do Joe Wick’s daily work out, I find it fun because we are getting some hard challenges but we also get some easy challenges too. My favourite activity this week was Joe Wicks because he is good at making fitness better and more fun. I think home learning will mostly be the same except from sharing it on Microsoft Sway, because we will have to still do our tasks as usual but we’re just sharing it online. I miss seeing my friends, teachers, the class, and other staff from school but at least we can communicate online with some of them. Maybe for next week we could look at coding or even crafting videos for some fun and to improve some of our skills.Zoe
What have I learned this week? This week we did ratios it was fun because we got to learn something new and they can be easy but can also be hard.
How have I found working at home? Difficult because teams seems to not work a lot so it’s hard to do work when it’s not working.
What has been my favourite activity or learning task? Joe Wicks work outs are good because they help you keep fit and are fun. They have some easy work outs and some hard work outs.
Is home learning what you expected it to be? No because I never thought it would be this hard and stressful. But it is also good because I like the problems of the day because some are challenging and some are easy.
What are the good bits about working at home? The good things about working at home is more free time you get you phone some of the day. You can talk to your friends while you’re working.
What do I miss about school? I miss being able to see my friends and teachers. Getting to do P.E. with the class. I miss talking to people in other classes face to face. I miss being able to walk to school every day.
What suggestions or ideas do you have for next week’s learning? We could do something else for PE instead of doing Joe Wicks every day, do some science at our homes and we can be on a call learning how to make a paper air plane for example.
This week in P7…
This week in P7 it was Scottish Week. We were doing poems and we had Irn Bru and Shortbread on Friday. We sung Loch Lomond by Runrig.
We are visiting Sky next week to do a report on technology and we have been doing scripts and learning our roles for Sky.
We have been adding and multiplying in Algebra this week.
We finally know our school show name, Pirates of the Currybean.
In science we were learning about recycled water. You could be drinking water that a dinosaur bathed in ages ago!
