P3 Weekly Reflection 29.4.19

What a busy first week of term it was!  We had several visitors in school last week and the children enjoyed all of the interesting information they had to share with us.  The PDSA came to share a whole school assembly and an exciting project was launched by Jacqueline from the Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity.  The school will be taking part in Oor Wullie’s Big Bucket Trail and we have to decorate a statue of Oor Wullie.  All children will contribute towards this over the coming week by drawing their own comic strip of Oor Wullie and his adventures.  The statue will then be returned to the Charity to be added to the trail which we will all be able to take part in over the summer holidays.  We are all very exicted.

Last week saw the closing date of the Young Writer’s Poetry Patrol Competition and we are now all eagerly awaiting the publication of the book so we can see all our hard work in print.

Some of the children’s highlights are as follows:-

Olly enjoyed learning how to make an origami caterpillar.

Luke N and Freya enjoyed listening to Emma from the PDSA telling us about Canine Communication.  Jarrad enjoyed the whole school assembly where the children learned more about pets.

William said he enjoyed learning a new game in PE, Team Dodgeball.

Lots of the children enjoyed the assembly from Jacqueline at the Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity.  She introduced us to Oor Wullie and launched Oor Wullie’s Big Bucket Trail.

Kayden enjoyed when we did number talks and Mr Valentine came to watch.

Finn liked when we learned about money.

Teme and Harris Si enjoyed when the class were learning about rounds in Music.  Mrs Stewart said they were very quick to pick up how to sing a round and Mrs Clyne agreed that the children did very well to learn how to sing in a two-part round in only one day.

The children all seem to have benefited from lots of fresh air and sunshine during the Easter break. I was amazed at how much taller they all looked after the holiday! This week has been short but very busy! Our literacy focus was to revise our learned sounds. We are now learning set 3 sounds, the children are learning that there is another way to read and spell words, same sound different spelling! So far we have learned: ee as in see, ea as in tea, oy as in toy, oi as in join, ay as in play and a-e as in make. In numeracy the children have been using 10 and 20 frames to help add and subtract an amount. Our numbertalk focus has been doubles and near doubles on a Rekenrek. The children all enjoyed a STEM lesson with Miss Greig, they had to design and build a boat to help save Tiddler!

Children’s learning comments:

Subhan – I made a boat with Charley we had a net to catch the fish and it floated.

Hiba – Me and Teria made a sparkly boat/car with lots of sticks and pompoms.

Lewis – I liked the assembly about the pets I learned that you need to keep your pet safe.

Poppy – I liked doing our numbertalks it was all about doubles and near doubles. A double is the same number again. A near double is like 4 add 3=7, you can do double 3 to make 6 then add 1 more to make 7. We were building boats because we were trying to save the little fish called Tiddler we tested them and mine floated, I made 2 and they both floated.

Austin – I liked doing the boats because it was fun, I like making stuff.

Kaelan – I liked the pets assembly a pet needs home, food , family, fun and care.

Roshan – I liked the pet assembly because the vet will help pets.

Teria – I liked the subtraction game we were taking away counting in 5’s helped because it was a 20 frame.

Solomia – I liked the boats we did a great job!

James – I liked counting with Teria taking away from 20 on the 20 frame.

Nicholas – I liked Tiddler I made a boat with Lewis, we made a sail.

Alister – I liked when we made the paper boats, our boat sunk because it soaked up water.

Sushanth – I loved the pet assembly. The puppy called Chase ate a toy minion and the doctor took it away and he feels better now. Pets should not eat plastic toys!

Christain – I liked the pet assembly and the dog things they need a home and to be happy and safe!

P1a Learning Reflection W/E 26th April

Welcome back. I hope you have had a lovely holiday. Primary 1 have had a busy week. This week we were visited by Emma from the PDSA, who spoke to us about what a dog, cat and a rabbit need. She helped us to get Pet wise. We also had a visit from Jacqueline who works for the Children’s hospital charity. She spoke to us about the Oor Wullie trail. We are going to get the opportunity to help decorate our own Oor Wullie which will be part of the trail. This week our focus for number talks has been finding doubles and near doubles in ten frames. We have also continued problem solving by looking for and continuing patterns. In literacy we have practised our sounds and tricky words. We learned two new tricky words saw and want. In writing we wrote about our holidays. We wrote two sentences and some of us even used a connective. We had our star of the week circle time. Here are a few of the children’s reflections:

In numeracy, we have been playing games such as give the dog a bone where we have to find numbers on a hundred square. We also completed our Flag Day problem solving. We saw P6 and P7 show Rock Bottom. P6 and P7 were fantastic and we thoroughly enjoyed the show. On Thursday we went litter picking with our P7 buddies. With our P4 reading buddies we got crafty. We made chicks hatching out of eggs. In art we designed a patterned Easter egg. In RME we heard the Easter story and re-sequenced it. On Thursday afternoon we went to the church service. Have a lovely holiday.

This week in P4

We have had a Mother’s Day theme running this week.  The children have been making/ baking/ writing over the week. I hope items arrive safely in one piece at home!

The children have begun exploring time and collecting information about planting seeds. It was quite a challenge to read the seed packet instructions and pick out the data they needed.

This week and next the children may come home with seeds to grow at home in eco friendly newspaper plant pots. When the seedlings appear, just plant the whole thing into the garden or a pot. the children should be able to tell you what they chose to plant!

We have also been learning about the story of Queen Esther in our religious and moral education, and we have had some interesting conversations about cultural behaviour of the time and the country.

P1a Learning Reflection W/E 29th March

P1a have had another busy week of learning. In literacy, we learned two new diagraphs ea and oi. Our tricky word this week was is. We wrote ea and oi words, rolled dice to make real and non-sense words, made words on our magnetic boards and played roll and read. For writing we wrote about why our granny’s are special. In numeracy this week we continued to explore odd and even numbers through sorting and playing games. We also learned how to solve a problem using the look for a pattern and make a list strategy. In number talks we were looking at making adding and subtracting sentences using the numbers 2, 5, 7 and 9. We have continued to learn about Katie Morag. We listened to the story of Katie Morag and the Tiresome Ted and we had to make predictions about what was going to happen. We designed a new tartan skirt for Katie Morag. Sevinc is our new star of the week. We each had to pay Sevinc a compliment. With Mrs Fraser we went outside and collected some things to make a plant collage. We took a white board and a pen and looked in the garden to find things and had to create tally chart. We enjoyed the ELC’s assembly about Mother’s Day. Here are a few of the children’s reflections:

It was all about Lauren Child and a story about a funny dog with Charlie and Lola. We then drew funny dogs of our own. Mrs Fraser enjoyed speaking to all our parents and sharing our progress.

Poppy was our pupil of the week this week and Sophie was our Star pupil for sharing strategies in number talks.

Happy weekend!

We learned how to spell ire words and aw words. We made salt crystals in science and tried dissolving different things. We enjoyed gymnastics and Spiderman dodge ball in gym. We learned about plurals and revised nouns.

Well done to Arya, our star of the week.

P1a Learning Reflections W/E 22nd March 2019

P1a have been working very hard this week. In numeracy we have been exploring odd and even numbers. We know that the odd numbers have a 1,3,5,7, or 9 in them and that the even numbers have a 0, 2, 4,6 or 8 in them. Even numbers all have a mate. We explored the odd and even pattern by sorting using numicon, feeding Mr Todd and Mr Steven , colouring odd cupcakes blue and even cupcakes red. In number talks this week Miss Maclachlan set us a challenge. She gave us the numbers 2, 4, 6 and 8 and we then had to try and think of as many number sentences as we could using these numbers e.g. 2+4=6. Can you think of anymore? In literacy this week we having been revising the diagraphs learned in set 2. We made words with these diagrams, taught ted how to spell words and did word searches with the ay, ee, igh, ow, oo, ar, or, ir, air, ou and oy diagraphs. For writing this week we worked in partners and wrote an acrostic poem about Spring. Before we wrote our poems we had a discussion about the season spring and how we know when it is spring. We enjoyed listening to the story about Katie Morag and the Wedding this week. We had a big discussion about things that happen during a wedding and the people involved. We also watched a wee clip of a Muslim wedding to look for similarities and differences in weddings. In P.E we are continuing to work on our team building skills and in particular co-operation. In Science with Mrs Fraser we were learning about what flowers need to grow. They need time, water, soil, light and air. We coloured in a flower and glued on the different bits of the flower.

Our jotters are coming home today for us to share our learning with you. Please could our jotters be brought back to school with us on Monday. Thank you.

Here are a few of the children’s reflections:

Euan: “I enjoyed revising oy words.”

Ayden: “ I am the same as Euan. I enjoyed practising oy words.”

Ziva: “ I found it tricky writing the word are.”

Leighton: “ I found it easy exploring odd and even numbers.”
