P7 Scottish Focus – Robert Burns
Happy New Year!
P7 have a very busy term ahead which will include preparing for the annual P6/P7 show – details to follow very soon! Before then we have our traditional Scottish Focus for the first 3 weeks of term. In P7 our focus will be the work of Robert Burns.
The poem choices for P7 are all by Robert Burns. Pupils will be given a choice but they can choose any other poem by Robert Burns that interests them, as long as it is of a suitable level of challenge for Primary 7. Some pupils may opt to learn an extract from Tam O’Shanter as an alternative to a whole poem.
In addition, P7 pupils will have a project to complete about the life and work of Robert Burns. This is due in on 16th February. A copy of the information sheet is attached.

We have had a very busy few weeks at LVPS with regards to Sport and PE. Here is a summary of all the great work that has been going on:
Sports Captains
Mr Stewart interviewed 10 children from P7 who declared an interest in becoming the 2017/18 Sports Captains. Their job list will include:
• Promote school sport and physical activity in school
• Promote elite sporting events in our school
• Promote extra-curricular and lunchtime clubs to all pupils
• Promote, organise and lead Commonwealth Games event
• Maintain Sports Committee and Sports Teams Noticeboards
• Plan and support Fitness Fortnight
• Promote @LVPSsportandPE twitter page
• Plan and deliver some sports clubs throughout the year.
• Attend regular Sports Committee meetings and extra meetings with Mr
Stewart and Mrs Gallagher.
• Regularly record all jobs performed in Sports Captains Folder.
• Maintain the tidiness and organisation of the PE cupboard through daily
checks
• Regularly attend school sporting events, even if not competing.
• Highlight and promote sporting events and opportunities at school
assemblies and in classes.
• Promote and celebrate examples of positive sportsmanship within
sporting clubs, PE lessons and competitive matches
• Provide a positive example for other children to follow at all times
through general behaviour and attitude in class and around school
• Complete ALL tasks that your teacher gives you in class even when you
are fulfilling your role as Sports Captain.
Well done to Liam and Sophie from P7 who are our new Sports Captains. They will be updating us on here on a fortnightly basis.
Sports Committee
The Sports Committee recently delivered a short presentation at last Friday’s Assembly. They split themselves into 3 groups and have came up with 3 fantastic ideas.
- Fruity Friday. Each child within our school is encouraged to bring a piece of fruit for their snack every Friday. This is to promote healthy eating. The Sports Committee will go round each class and give 2 house points to each child who has a piece of fruit.
- Sport Spotlight. Every month, members of each class will be working towards a Sport Spotlight certificate. This idea is being backed by Mr stewart and the rest of the staff but is an idea developed by the Sports Committee. P1-P2 can receive this award by showing perseverance, resilience, working hard and always trying their best in PE. P3 – P7 will be the same but also by showing sportsmanship and by representing the school to the best of their ability in competive matches, cluster festivals and by attending extra-curricular activities. Mr Stewart and the class teachers will decide for p1 and P2 and then each class will decide for p3-p7 along with the Sports Committee and Mr Stewart.
- Sports Letter to Carers: We are looking for support in delivering more extra-curricular activities. The Sports Committee have written to all parents and carers for support. If you are keen to help please contact Mrs Young at the office. Even if you have no previous experience we can support you in delivering an activity.
Exciting Times Ahead
Terms 3 and 4 will be very busy. Here is a flavour of what is coming up.
- Sportathon
- Fitness Fortnight
- More extra-curricular activities for p1-p4
- Commonwealth Games
- Sports Day
- More matches for our 2 football teams, netball, basketball and handball teams
- More details to follow……………………….
Christmas Parties
P1 – P7 have taken part in their Christmas Parties and have had lots of fun. Over the last few weeks each class has been learning some traditional Scottish Country Dancing and they performed these fantastically.
All of the great work going on will help us to gain our 3rd Gold Award. if successful, we will be the first primary school in West Lothain to achieve this remarkable feat.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New year when it comes.
Thank you for your continued support.
Mr Stewart and the Sports Committee
Read Two/To Buddies
The children had a great afternoon on Monday working together with their ‘Read To’ buddy in P4/P1
The children told a Christmas story, wrote a story book and some made elf puppets where others played a snowman dice game. The engagement level was very high as they worked together and helped each other with ideas, writing cutting and drawing.
P5/4 Christmas Party
French with P7 and P1
P7 created Powerpoint presentations to teach P1 the French words for different colours. Today was the big day and P7 had great fun working with their P1 buddies. The P7 pupils are very happy to report that P1 were amazing at French and remembered the words very quickly.

What a range of moves they displayed in the disco, and their modern take on Scottish Country Dancing was a sight to behold! Thank you to Miss Conway, Mrs Murdoch and Mr Stewart, as well as our brilliant parent helpers.
