Primary 6 have started the school newspaper this week – The Village Reporter. Our two reporters for this week are very excited to get started!

At Livingston Village we enjoy celebrating the achievements of our pupils and we would like to say a big well done to all the children in our class for their continued hard work in their learning. Last term we celebrated some super work from the children and Ethan, Freya, Jarrad, Lakshya, Leo, Elisha, Luke N, Rohan and Kayden were all rewarded with a Pupil of the Week certificate. We look forward to celebrating many more successes this term. Please remember that we celebrate all of the children’s successes including wider achievements from any clubs and groups they might attend out of school so send in any certificates, medals, badges etc and we’ll look forward to the children sharing their exciting news.
Today P5 thought they would enjoy the snow and put a science based twist onto their fun. The children worked in groups to come up with some snowy science questions and the recorded their predictions. We then put our coats, boots and gloves on and headed outiside.
Questions for investigation included ……Does paint make snow melt quicker? How many drops of cold water does it take to melt a snowball? Will a snow tower collapse before a snow bridge? And hitch melts a mound of snow quicker, hot water or cold water.
Lots of discussion about the questions, making experiments fair and then comparing results with predictions.

Enjoy the snow folks!

We are pleased to announce that this year the P6/P7 show will be…

P6 and P7 have had an introduction to the story and the characters, and have listened to some of the songs. There appears to be much excitement in both classes and it looks like there will be strong competition for the main parts. Audition pieces will be distributed this coming week.
Each pupil will be given their own copy of the script and will be expected to bring it to school each day. No replacements will be issued.
This week in Primary 2 the children have been learning about Growth Mindsets. We watched a video clip about Mojo, a friendly monster who loves school. Mojo loved maths but decided he wasn’t smart enough when the maths problems got a little bit too tricky for him and he wanted to leave. His friend helped him to see that his brain was a muscle and if he gave his brain exercise by practising his maths and working hard, his brain would become stronger and he would become smarter. We had a lovely discussion about fixed and growth mindsets following the video clip (which can be found on Youtube – Growth Mindset for Students – Episode 1/5) and then read and discussed the book Your Fantastic Elastic Brain Stretch It, Shape It by JoAnn Deak. The children will continue to learn about a growth mindset throughout this term and I look forward to seeing the changes in their thinking as they move to develop more of a growth mindset towards their learning.

The children in Primary 3 and Primary 2 had a super time as they celebrated the end of the Christmas festivities with their party on Wednesday 20th December. The children enjoyed some fun and games including some traditional scottish country dance. This was followed by party food and karaoke and rounded off with some excellent dancing in the dancing competition. Everyone had a lovely time and the teachers hope everyone had a nice relaxing holiday with their families. Here are some photos of the fun!

Maths

This week we have been learning how to subtract an amount from a group and then counting what is left to find the answer.
Scotland Focus

We started our Scotland topic by having a discussion about what we already know about Scotland. Here are the children’s responses:
Caleb – I live in Scotland
Andrew – The American president is Scottish and he is not a real president
Maizy – Scotland is a very cold place
Nathan – Scotland is a country
Andrew – I am a lucky boy because I was born and live in Scotland
Highlights of the week
Andrew – being a news reader, I was asking a person who saw Nessie questions
Emma – I learned about Nessie
Aakruti – we made a play dough Nessie
Maizy – Learning about subtraction, it’s when you take away
Maddie – the take away sign means subtraction
Sophia – Nessie lives in Loch Ness
Holly – I like doing word building, rock and sock rhyme, they end with special friend ck
Ms King – My highlight was noticing how much the children have grown over the two week holiday, not just in height but in their attitude towards learning.
Happy New Year to all, I hope you had a lovely rest over the festive holidays and are ready for a very busy term!

Happy New Year. Hope you all had a lovely holiday. As part of our Robert Burns Celebrations we are running a poetry competition in school. A selection of children from each class will be chosen to perform their poem to the judges. Could you help your child to choose either The Crocodile by JK Annand or Nessie by JK Annand and practice their choice of poem. Their poems will be heard in class the week beginning 22nd January. The children have brought their poems home today. Here is a link to a copy of both poems:
The children have chosen the poem that they would like to recite for this years competition. They have all been given a copy and told to keep it safe!
Can I ask that the children have their poem ready for recital to the class for Monday 22nd January, as the class will be voting for the best 3 competitors to reach the Final.
I have included links to the poems in case they lose their copy, or forget to take it home.
Any questions then please let me know.
