Welcome to Primary 1M

What a busy first week of school! The majority of the children have settled into school really well. I am impressed with how independent they are. They can all take responsibility for getting ready in the morning by changing their shoes, unpacking their bags, putting their water bottles in the tray and snack away in their own tray. This week the children have been busy learning their first sound ‘m’, exploring the number 5 through play, learning about road safety and designing our own 2D vehicle pictures. These pictures were quite creative. For P.E this week the children enjoyed taking part in yoga. As part of our weekly routine on a Friday the children and I will have a reflection chat about their learning. Some of the children’s reflections will be included in the blog posts each week.

What a busy couple of weeks P1M have had!!!

We have had a couple of very busy weeks recently in Primary 1. We had a busy week preparing and practicing for our assembly on the Life Cycle of a Butterfly. We had our trip to Mill Farm which was fantastic. Photos to follow later. Last week we were learning about i and o magic e sounds. We made words such as bike and home. In writing we wrote about our trip to Mill Farm. In Maths we have been exploring money. We have been taking part in various activities such as count up where we have been counting with money and coin exchange where we have been making values such as 3p which don’t have their own coins. In IDL, We were set a challenge by the friendly dragon. He asked us to build a 3D model of what we thought he looked liked. We could use Lego, play dough or the bricks. On Tuesday we had outdoor learning with Mrs Murdoch. Here are a few of the children’s reflections on their learning:

Lewis: It was quite challenging to make a dragon out of Lego.

Aiden: I found learning the magic e sounds easy.

Alanice: It was easy to learn o magic e.

Jan: I learned why magic e is magical.

Calum: It was easy to work together to make a dragon.

Anya: I liked working with Mrs Murdoch. We were putting objects on a map.

P1M Learning Reflection W/E 25th May

This week we have been learning about the Life Cycle of the Butterfly. We had to cut out pictures and stick them in the right order. The life cycle of a butterfly goes like this eggs then caterpillars then cocoon and lastly they become butterflies. In Maths, we have been learning about symmetry. We have learned what symmetrical means by creating our own symmetrical butterflies and symmetrical towers. In Literacy, we learned the sound a magic e. We built and wrote a magic e words. We held a sentence, our sentence was I can see three green sheep. The nursery came to visit on Tuesday. We made crowns and played with them. In Science we discussed the result of our experiment from last week and planted our own bean stalks. Here are our thoughts about our learning this week:

Mathew: I found it tricky to complete the life cycle of a butterfly worksheet.

Lewis: I enjoyed and found it easy to put the life cycle of a butterfly together.

Pola: I found it easy to cut, stick and colour the life cycle of a butterfly.

Jaxon: I found learning the a magic e sound and completing the missing words on the sheet tricky.

Aiden: I enjoyed finding out who was write with their prediction and then planting my own bean stalk.

Calum: I enjoyed planting my own bean stalk and cannot wait to see it grow.

Anya: I liked planting my bean stalk. I know it will need light, heat and water to grow.

Cali: I liked ordering the life cycle of a butterfly.

P1M Learning Reflection W/E 18th May

This week we have learned ‘ea’ and ‘oi’ diagraphs. We used these sounds to word build. In writing we were describing the friendly dragon using wow words. We also did our hold a sentence. In numeracy and maths we have been learning and using positional language such as forwards to describe where something was or to direct BeeBot to a certain place. In science we are carrying out an experiment. We have planted magic beans in three pots. The first pot is in sun and has had a drink of water. The second pot is in the sun but with no water and the last pot is in the dark with no water. We are going to find out the best growing conditions so we can grow a beanstalk. With Mr Stewart on Tuesday we were practicing for sports day.  Here are a few of the children’s reflections:

Aiden: I enjoyed all my learning this week.

Pola: I found pinching the new sounds in words and during hold a sentence tricky.

Alanice: I enjoyed science and predict that the pot in the dark will only grow a tiny bit.

James: I enjoyed all my learning. I really enjoyed practicing for sports day.

P1M’s Learning Reflection W/E 11th May

We have had a busy week. We have been looking at odd and even number patterns. In literacy, we have been practicing our sounds and doing hold a sentence. The sentence we held in our head was ‘the boys and girls can play.’ We then wrote this sentence. We have started watching the birds that come to our school garden. We are recording these on a tally chart. For art, we drew ‘Mirror mirror on the wall’ self-portraits linked to Snow White. Here are some of the the children’s thoughts about their learning:

P1M Learning Reflection W/E 4th May

Primary 1 have been busy learning the last set 2 sound which was ‘oy’. We brainstormed and then made lots of ‘oy’ words such as boy. We also learned  the tricky word ‘too’. In writing we have been working on letter writing and we wrote a letter to the friendly dragon telling him that we are going to help him save the enchanted forest by getting people to believe in fairy tales again. The dragon paid the classroom a visit when we were at lunch on Wednesday and left us a mirror and a number 7. We worked out that the items were from Snow White and we listened to the story. We then pretended we were Snow White walking through the dark scary forest. In Maths, we have been learning about capacity and how many cups of water or sand it takes to fill objects. We learned the terms full, half full, nearly full/empty and empty. Here are a few thoughts from the children on their learning this week:

P1M’s Learning Reflection W/E 27th April 2018

Another busy week for Primary 1 learning lots of new things. In literacy we learned the ir and ou sounds and the tricky word to. We used these new sounds to build words such bird and pound. We looked at rhyming words as quite a few of our ou words rhymed. We wrote a letter to Mrs Mill asking her if we could help the friendly dragon save fairyland by turning our classroom into the enchanted forest. We were very excited to have received a letter from the dragon. We drew illustrations of some of the fairytales that we knew of. In maths we explored weight. We used pan balance scales, play dough, classroom items and weights to explore how heavy items were and compare what was the lightest item with the heaviest item. We learned that although we changed the shape of play dough it still weighed the same. In health and wellbeing we discussed the qualities of a good friend. We then created wanted posters displaying these qualities. Next week in Literacy we will be learning the ‘oy’ sound and revising set 2 sounds. In numeracy and maths we will be focusing on exploring capacity. We are all looking forward to exploring our first fairytale and starting to create the enchanted forest in our classroom.
