The news from P5…

This week saw P5 take part in some interesting Maths challenges to celebrate Maths week. This included using Blether Stations to help with Problem Solving, A Murder Mystery Challenge and some SumDog as well. Some great communication and explaining of strategies from the children!

Class readers were handed out this week and the children were very excited to start their reading, using E.R.I.C time to catch up with their new novels.

The new Homework was issued on Monday too. Lots of different activities for the children to do and feedback to the class on 28th September.

We have also been discussing what makes a good learner and how the class can become better learners, including strategies that they can use in class. Today we changed our classroom around and have started to use Talk Partners to help the children share their learning with a focused partner each week. Partners and seats will change weekly which creates a more positive learning environment and helps P5 become the best TEAM that they can be!

Primary 5 have also continued with Handball this week and will have a Festival on Tuesday 9th October at Inveralmond CHS with other classes within our cluster. Please pop the date in your diary and I will ensure permission forms and EE2’s are sent out next week.

Final reminder that all forms need to be returned for Lowport as soon as possible so please check their bags, just incase!

Have a lovely weekend…hopefully the sun may shine!

P2 Learning Reflection

In literacy we have been busy learning the ‘ea’ sound. We completed a word building and writing activity. When reading at home, see how many ‘ea’ words the children can find in their reading book! We have also been spotting nouns in stories.

In numeracy we began counting and sequencing numbers to 50 and the children are becoming more confident in using their number squares to help them. Everyone now has their Sumdog logins which are stuck inside our reading records.

In RME we have been thinking about the theme of friendship. We enjoyed reading the story of ‘Starry Eyed Stan’. We discussed the qualities of a good friend and how we can be kind to others.

In Science, we started learning about our five senses. We began by exploring our sense of sight, investigating the different parts of the eye and how our eyes work.

P3 Weekly Reflection 14.09.18

On Wednesday we went to the Book Festival at New Lanark.  Luke N told us that he particularly enjoyed listening to Elizabath MacKay reading her book Wee Granny’s Magic Bag and the Pirates.  Most of the children enjoyed the Annie MacLeod Experience where we learned about life in the past and most of us did not think children had a good life in those days.  Emma M told us that she thought it was a dangerous and unhealthy thing to do climbing under the machines like Annie did.  Sadly the weather was not very nice during our visit but William said he enjoyed running in the rain!

In Maths we have been using our addition and subtraction to complete magic squares.  Mrs Clyne challenged us to make our own magic squares but most of us found this quite tricky.  Perhaps you could practise some at home?

Yesterday, Mrs Hill came to talk to us about life on her cattle farm.  Her husband has about 100 cows which he farms for beef.  His cows will eventually end up in the supermarkets for us to buy.  Mrs Hill spoke about the different types of machines and the jobs they do.  Jarrad told us that he liked learning about the combine harvester.  Lots of the children asked excellent questions and we learned lots.  One interesting fact is that the cows will eat approximately 1000 bales of silage over the winter months.  During the winter the cows are moved inside to the barn and Mr Hill’s friend sends his sheep to stay because it is too cold up on his farm further north. Kayden and Freya reminded us that having the sheep to stay was a good thing because they eat the grass right down which helps it to grow well again the following year.

Today in assembly Mrs Mill was talking about compassion.  We learned to look out for those around us and help people when they are feeling sad or needing help.  Emma M explained that if we do a small act of kindness for one person, they feel good and will then feel like doing something kind for someone else and the kindness spreads.  Let’s see if we can spread some acts of kindness, I wonder how many acts of kindness Mrs Clyne will see over the next week?

Please remember the children are off on Monday and Tuesday next week.  I hope you all have a lovely holiday weekend and look forward to hearing all the children’s news on Wednesday.

This Week’s Highlights for P4

Top of the list this week has been the Sumdog competition. The class are chuffed to get 343rd out 5658 classes taking part nationally and coming 2nd in the school.

The next highlight was the maths challenges they did this week on word problems involving timetable knowledge (featured on twitter), they particularly enjoyed having a choice of challenge mild, spicy, or hot, with a few trying a harder level than usual. Well done.

They have also enjoyed technology with Mrs Fraser, looking at packaging for bananas.

Mrs Smith’s highlight this week has been the buzz of engagement in the classroom as the children are focussed and enjoying their learning.  They have also been challenged and have delivered Legendary Line-Ups this week, moving through the school as if they were not there.  Super well done.

This week in P6…

We have had a super week in Primary 6 with lots of maths activities to celebrate Maths Week Scotland 2018!

On Monday, we had a fantastic science lesson with Mrs Fraser. We put bread in a bag with water and then put it in different places to investigate which environment mould would grow best.

“Science is realistic and fun.” – Ainslie

“I liked looking at the mould under the microscopes.” – Logan F

“It was fun to see where different mould grows, it can be lots of different colours.” – Zoe

“Some of us actually grew Penicillin!”  It had a greeny/blue bit in the middle and a white ring around it.” – Leon & Rowan

As part of our Maths Week Scotland activities, we have been investigating a Murder Mystery. We have been multiplying and dividing decimals by 10, 100 and 1000 and plotting coordinates on 4 quadrants. This has given us a preview into what we will be doing in maths this year!

“I really enjoyed doing the murder mystery.  I can’t wait to find out who it is!” – Logan F

“I really enjoyed it because I thought the maths was challenging!” – Calum

“We are so excited to find out who the murderer is!” – Ainslie & Lewis

“We found the clues outside, which made it really exciting!” – Ainslie

“I agree with Ainslie!” – Callan

“My favourite part was plotting the co-ordinates because it wasn’t too hard but it wasn’t too easy either.” – Leon

On Thursday, we did some baking to celebrate Maths Week. We used real life maths skills such as estimation, measure, time and sequencing. We then worked out some abstract calculations over a slice of banana bread! How much flour would we need to make 8 loaves? How many 500g tubs of butter would we need to buy? How much would be left over?

“I loved squishing the bananas. I can’t wait to bake again!” – Eesa and Logan Y

“The banana bread was delicious!” – Luke

“It was really fun and it tasted so good!” – Katy & Logan F

“The best maths lesson I’ve ever had!” – Aiden

“I enjoyed beating the eggs!” – Matthew, Hayley D & Kyle

“Squishing the bananas was disgusting!” – Zoe

“I liked eating the banana loaf.” – Logan Y

“I was in charge of spreading the butter over the baking tin!” – Natalie

“I loved eating the banana bread.  It was SO delicious!” – Rowan

“I WANT MORE BANANA LOAF!” – Finlay

“I quite liked how we got to estimate the amounts first because we got to test out our skills.” – Hayley B

“I really hope we can do it again soon.  It was really fun and delicious!” – Leon

This week we’ve been practicing our handball skills in preparation for our handball festival and afterschool club.

“I enjoyed playing handball. I’m hoping to go to the festival!” – Katy

“Handball has been great fun.  I’m glad we’re getting to play it again!” – Zoe

“I really enjoyed dribbling in handball because it made the games more challenging!” – Calum

“I’m excited about the handball afterschool club starting!” – Callan

We are still enjoying reading the novel Holes by Louis Sachar.  This week we have been using visualisation to help us to make sense of the story so far.

“I enjoyed visualising the storyline. It’s really helped me.” – Hayley B

“Miss Marnie read us the book whilst we visualised the story. I found that easier.” – Logan F

“It helped me to understand the story better.” – Eesa

“I enjoyed drawing the Lizard!” – Zoe

Today we started Bikeability.  The first thing we had to do was the M-check where you check all the parts of the bike are safe.  Then we practised “Starting Off” by getting into a safe place where we could see and be seen by others.

“It was really fun and I enjoyed it!” – Sri

“It was amazing!” – Ellie

“My favourite part was the lifesaver signals.” – Silvester

“I learned a lot about how to check your bike and how to act on the roads.” – Rowan

“We also did a helmet check to make sure it fits properly.” – Jamie & Cade

Maths Week and Risk Factory

Another busy week for P7. Maths Week Scotland and a visit to the Risk Factory were clear highlights for us all.

The class have been solving problems by finding patterns that help to predict further answers. Sumdog as always is a firm favourite and P7 have completed hundreds of questions each this week. An extra well done to those who managed to finish all 1000 questions.

The Risk Factory is always a hit with P7. It allows pupils to find ways to deal with risky situations like building sites or railway lines. There are 10 different scenarios to visit and it is great fun. Ask your child if they were one of several who ‘died’ by making poor decisions – some ‘died’ more than once! £20 on a railway line was apparently worth taking a risk for!

Jack – it teaches you a lot of scenarios that you could use when you are older. The volunteers teach you a lot of things as well.

Ben – It was really fun in the fire scenario. I died 3 times in the bus scenario.

Tyler – I died 3 times!

Kaitlyn – The fire scenario was really scary but fun.

Agota – The fire one was my favourite. I liked the railway one too.

P1a Learning Reflection W/E 14th September

What another busy week for P1. I can’t believe that is us at the end of week number 4. This week we have been learning the sounds i and n and the tricky word of. On Wednesday, Mrs Aitken taught us how to clap out syllables in words. Almost everyone in the class has 2 syllables in their name! In writing we wrote about when we feel excited. In numeracy, we have been learning about number 8 and 9. We have also been practicing counting to 20 and recognising the number after. For IDL this week we worked in groups to re-tell the story of the Three Little Pigs through mime. In Science we were learning about smooth and rough materials. Here are the children’s reflections:
