Support for Learning

A huge thank you to our parents and carers for taking the time to come into school for our Meet The Teacher event on Thursday evening.  It was lovely to see so many of you and fantastic to welcome you back into the building!

I was able to chat to, and catch up with, so many of you during the event, but if I missed you, here is a copy of the information I was sharing regarding the support available to learners at East Calder Primary School.

Thank you.

P7A

We started to explore our context further this week; exploring Scotland’s place in the world, comparing our geographical makeup to North America’s. The pupils used Atlases and a globe to explore the world’s continents and North America further. We linked this to our work on place value, looking at how many miles apart some countries are. Next week we are going to plan and budget for a trip using real live websites, costings and forecasts.

P3a Learning

This week in P3a we have been working on numbers to 100, talking about number before, after & between. We have been sharing out strategies for adding within 20. In Literacy we have been learning about nouns & adjectives and how to write a description.  We have been introduced to Epic Reading on the iPads, which we love!  We have been continuing to discuss the wellbeing indicators and talking about how we feel. We worked as a class to decide what would be our first topic. We chose The Geography of Scotland and then thought about questions we would like to investigate. Another fun week with lots more learning!

Working hard in P3B!

Article 29: We have the right to develop our talents and abilities.

We had a very busy week in Primary 3B last week. We were learning to read and write Fry’s words in Literacy and we also learned to identify nouns and adjectives. We are going to be learning to write descriptions in Writing and we will find lots of nouns and adjectives in descriptive texts.

We had a very exciting morning when we found a mystery box in our classroom. It was full of words inside, along with a note asking us to find the other missing words. This sent us on a word hunt around the classroom! We then realised that all the words were nouns. We used these words and a power point to help us write sentences using nouns and adjectives. We worked with a partner and wrote on white boards.

In Numeracy, we have been exploring Place Value and we have been learning to order and sequence numbers to 100. Some of us have been ordering and sequencing three digit numbers to challenge ourselves more. We engage in games, smart board games, white board tasks and pencil tasks to support our learning. We use concrete materials such as cubes, counting sticks and counters to help us if we need them. We also use number squares and we have been developing our confidence using 100 squares to identify the value of a number.

We also take part in Number Talks every day and on Thursday Miss Marra wrote a missing number addition calculation on the board for us to solve. We used concrete materials, number lines or number squares to solve the problem and we enjoyed sharing our strategies.

P3a HWB

This week we have been learning about the well-being indicators Safe, Healthy, Active and Nurture. We discussed how we feel in different situations. We thought about how we know we are nurtured and how we are all unique. We designed back packs to show how we all look different and all like different things.

Learning in P2/1

This week P2/1 have been learning about the school rules. We wrote the words and drew pictures to show how we are Ready, Safe and show Respect. Some of us presented our learning at the school assembly. 😁

‘We are ready when we sit still’ Belle.

‘We are safe when we walk in the corridor’ Jay.

‘We show respect when we look after the toys in the classroom’ Eli.

We listened to the story of The Rainbow Fish. It’s all about friendship and sharing. We linked our story to our class charter and made our display with our own fantastic Rainbow Fish.

Primary Two

This week the children shared their views and ideas on what they would like to learn about in primary two. They wrote excellent sentences. Below you will see some examples. Some of the ideas included, wildlife, nature, unicorns and Space. Lots of us chose animals so we decided that wildlife will be our first IDL context. Keep up the good work P2!

Primary One PE

The primary one pupils have made an excellent start to PE by learning all the gym hall routines and safety rules. They have also been developing their catching, bouncing, running, dribbling, jumping and skipping. All of the children have enjoyed learning the ‘banana dance’ warm up. They might even be able to teach it to you at home!

Over the next couple of weeks, we will be exploring passing, throwing and rolling balls at targets.

First Aid Training

Our fantastic Pupil Supports workers along with myself took part in a refresher emergency first aid course to ensure we can continue providing the best care for all of our children!

A big thank you to Crown Safety for educating us all further with important life skills. Adults learn too 🙂

Fantastic First Week in Primary 3B

We had a great first week back in Primary 3B! Everyone arrived on Tuesday morning ready to learn and excited to see our friends.

I have been so impressed with the listening skills in our class in our first week and you have already been working so hard. Mrs Stewart even popped in during Smart Start because she noticed you were all working hard and on task! We started off the week today with Active Spelling and you were all excited to use your brand new Literacy jotters. During our first week, you had many great conversations to share your thoughts, feelings and ideas about your new class.

Here are some of the conversations I observed from you during your first week in Primary 3.
