Welcome to our new Primary 1 pupils and families

Dear parents/carers,
I hope you are all well 🙂
It was lovely to meet those of you who were able to come along to our Transition Visit in June. It’s not too long until we meet you all again and welcome our new Primary 1 pupils to school.
As promised please find a link below to a video of our school. We hope you will be able to share it with your child and watch it together. Hopefully it will make things a little more familiar to them when they start school in August. Our classrooms are not completely set up yet and our teachers will be making the finishing touches soon, however we hope that the video gives you and your child an idea of how the classrooms and areas where you child will play and learn will look in Primary 1 at East Calder Primary School.

N-P1 Transition Task – Final Week

It was lovely to meet many of you last week for our P1 Transition Visits 🙂  We hope you enjoyed spending some time in your classroom and meeting your teacher. 
Please see information and links below for this weeks transition activities. These are the last transition activities before the Summer holidays.
The story this week is called ‘The Rainbow Fish’ by Marcus Pfister.   
At the beginning of the story, the rainbow fish doesn’t have very many friends but by the end of the story, he has learned to share and has lots of friends.
Can you draw a picture of one of your friends?   Can you write your name and their name too?
You could try drawing a picture of the beautiful rainbow fish or if you have paints at home you could use them to make a finger painting.  Maybe you could cut shiny materials or pages from an old magazine and stick them onto paper in the shape of a fish.

Parents, the booklet attached below is by Axel Scheffler.   It was written together with Professor Graham Medley (Professor of Infectious Disease Modelling), Head teachers and Child Psychologist Dr Sarah Carman.   It is an accessible booklet which can be read in parts or all at once.  We hope it is useful to you and your family. I’m pleased to hear that lots of you enjoyed last weeks story 🙂 I’ve loved seeing the photos which some of you have sent in and I’m very impressed with the healthy lunches you’ve put together.

We hope you are enjoying the transition tasks so far – it has been lovely to see and hear about some of the activities you have been doing based around the stories we have shared so far 🙂

This week is another story for you. It’s called ‘Charlie and Lola – I am too absolutely small for school’. Please see details below for the story and a suggested activity.

Hi everyone, here is your next transition activity.  It is all to do with the story book ‘Charlie and Lola – I Am Too Absolutely Small for School’.  If you have the book at home, then ask someone in your family to read it to you.  If you don’t have it, click on the link below to hear the story.

 Lola is a bit of a fussy eater so is not very sure about lunchtimes! Do you think you will try a school dinner, or take your own packed lunch?

Here is a little task for you.  Can you plan and prepare a healthy packed lunch that you might want to take to school?  You could do this by drawing it, or you could actually make up a packed lunch and eat it at home or in your garden!

Feel free to take some pictures and send them into us.  Have fun!

This week we would like you to watch and listen to, or if you have the book at home read, ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle. This book provides lots of learning opportunities to discuss healthy eating, life cycles, counting, colours and days of the week.  There is lots to talk about  with your child as you enjoy the story together. Please find the link to the story below:

This week we would like you to watch and listen to the story ‘It’s a Seashell Day’ by Diane Ochiltree with your child.  The story and learning activities suggested are an ideal way to further develop your child’s number sense and the counting principles. N-P1 Transition Task – Week 1

Nursery – P1 Transition
Dear Parents/Carers – you should have received an email today with a copy of our N-P1 Transition Timeline, photographs of our P1 staff and details about our Week 1 ‘Transition Task’. Please click on the link below to access our N-P1 Transition Timeline.
 As part of this years transition process we would like to email you a weekly transition task for you and your child to complete. Our Week 1 Transition Task is ‘Getting To Know You’. So we can get to know your child a little bit, we would love if you could email a photograph of your child surrounded by some of their favourite things. It could be a favourite toy, a favourite book etc, they could be wearing their favourite outfit etc.
Please email your photo to laura.donnelly@westlothian.org.uk so I can share it with the P1 teachers and display it on a ‘Welcome Wall’ in the Primary 1 area of the school.

Visit to Primary 1

While Primary 1 children were out on their trip last week, we had a last minute opportunity to take some pre-school children up to the primary 1 class for a visit.  They enjoyed playing in the classroom and listening to a story being read by Mrs Donnelly.

The transition for pre-school children will be happening in the next few weeks.  Please check the parents board in the cloakroom for more details.

P1 Parent Information Evening

Primary 1 Information Meeting for Parents/Carers

We are looking forward to welcoming our pre-school parents/carers to our school on Tuesday 28th May at 6.00pm. We are delighted that your child will be starting Primary 1 at East Calder Primary in August. We hope that our Information Evening will provide you with all the information you require and that any questions you have will be answered.

Our Information Evening will begin with a presentation which will outline the arrangements for your child starting Primary 1 in August. It will also give you some practical ideas about how you can help your child get ready for the transition to school. Following the presentation there will be an opportunity for parents/carers to visit the P1 classrooms and meet the Primary 1 teachers. For anyone who would like it, there will also be an opportunity to have a tour of the school.

We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday evening!
