Welcome to our new Primary 1 pupils and families

Dear parents/carers,
I hope you are all well 🙂
It was lovely to meet those of you who were able to come along to our Transition Visit in June. It’s not too long until we meet you all again and welcome our new Primary 1 pupils to school.
As promised please find a link below to a video of our school. We hope you will be able to share it with your child and watch it together. Hopefully it will make things a little more familiar to them when they start school in August. Our classrooms are not completely set up yet and our teachers will be making the finishing touches soon, however we hope that the video gives you and your child an idea of how the classrooms and areas where you child will play and learn will look in Primary 1 at East Calder Primary School.
The link to the Sway and Video is below:
Go to this Sway
Once you click on the link it should take you to our ‘Sway’. Then just click on the ‘Play’ button in the top right corner – there is a short written message and then a video for you and your child to watch together.

Farewell Mrs O’Neill

After many years as a Nursery Nurse at ECPS Mrs O’Neill is now retiring. Some of us visited Mrs O’Neill today to hand over the many cards, gifts and pictures that have been handed in by both families and staff members.  She really was overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity.  I’m sure you would all join me in wishing Mrs O a very long and happy retirement.

NURSERY – Learning at Home

Hi Everyone,

It’s hard to believe it’s the last week of term already.  Our end of term has been very different this year and unfortunately we have not been able to give our nursery leavers the proud celebration they so deserve before moving onto school.  Certificates are being posted on our Nursery Leavers Learning Journals this week this can be printed as a reminder of their early year’s journey (access PDF file this by pressing the options button on your child’s learning journal).

We will miss them all so much and feel privileged to have had the pleasure of watching them grow into confident little individuals at East Calder Nursery who are now ready to embrace the next exciting new journey in their lives.

Staff Changes

Sadly Mrs O’Neill will be leaving nursery as she retires this term.  We wish her well as she approaches a new and exciting time in her life.  She came to work at East Calder when the original  nursery was opened over 30 years ago, over this time she has supported and guided hundreds of children as they took their first steps into their school lives.  Many of our present parents still have precious memories of those first days in nursery and the support Mrs O’Neill gave them.  Good Luck Mrs O’Neill we will all miss you.

Mrs Sharkey our Pupil Support Worker is moving on to work at the school, she will also be such a loss at Nursery and we wish her well in her new adventure.

Mrs O’Neill has kindly written a poem for the children who are leaving to start school.  She will miss them dearly and wishes them all lots of happiness in their new adventure.

Leaving nursery now, full of different ideas

Onwards to school, lots of excitement and fears.

Gaining lots of confidence during the last 2 years

We had variation of emotions, laughter and tears.

Now starting to read, write and learn, continuing to grow

Transporting your thoughts and developing what you know.

The uniform for school you can wear and be ready

Everything you need in bag, but don’t need no teddy.

Old and new faces you can readily approach

A new teacher there smiling and ready to coach.

Learning in nursery will now be put to the test,

We all know you will do your very very best!

Have lots of fun, be happy, makes lots of new friends

Your learning experience can continue to extend.

Nursery, though fun will now be a thing of the past,

Now look forward to your own little special class.

New Term

We are looking forward to welcoming back our returning children and families in the new term and are busy preparing our nursery environment to make this a positive and supportive experience.  You will be notified shortly of when the nursery will resume.

New Staff

We would like to welcome  new staff to our team who are looking forward to meeting you all in the new term.

Mrs Murray  –  Early Years Officer

Miss  Ritchie  –  Nursery Nurse

Most of our nursery team will be busy working at hubs over the summer and our nursery will close until the new term, therefore this will be the last blog post until we return.  We wish all our families a safe summer and hope that you continue to enjoy making happy memories with your children. We have felt so proud when reading all the learning, experiences and achievements you have supported your children with over this challenging time and hope you recognise the great parents that you are.

A few idea’s to try at home – kindly shared by our families

Cloud Dough

This is an easy no cook recipe using just three ingredients and is great for sensory play and some hands on maths and science learning.

  • Plain Flour (4 cups)
  • Oil – baby or vegetable oil (1 cup)
  • Colour (grate in some coloured chalk or use gel food colouring)

Encourage your child to get involved when making it and as they count and measure the ingredients and observe the change in textures as the materials combine they are experiencing learning in maths and science.

L.1. I have experimented with everyday items as units of measure to investigate and compare sizes and amounts in my environment, sharing my findings with others.

Sunshine and Ice Cream

Enjoy the outdoors with plenty of fresh air and exercise, helping your child to use up energy, discovering new places together and practising gross motor skills.

L.1. I am enjoying daily opportunities to participate in different kinds of energetic play, both outdoors and indoors. 3 +

N-P1 Transition Task

N-P1 Transition Task – Final Week

It was lovely to meet many of you last week for our P1 Transition Visits 🙂  We hope you enjoyed spending some time in your classroom and meeting your teacher.
Please see information and links below for this weeks transition activities. These are the last transition activities before the Summer holidays.
The story this week is called ‘The Rainbow Fish’ by Marcus Pfister.
At the beginning of the story, the rainbow fish doesn’t have very many friends but by the end of the story, he has learned to share and has lots of friends.
Can you draw a picture of one of your friends?   Can you write your name and their name too?
You could try drawing a picture of the beautiful rainbow fish or if you have paints at home you could use them to make a finger painting.  Maybe you could cut shiny materials or pages from an old magazine and stick them onto paper in the shape of a fish.
Please click on the link below to listen to the story of ‘The Rainbow Fish’.  We hope you enjoy it 🙂
The rainbow fish has so many colours!   The link below is a favourite song of ours in Primary 1.  How many colours do you know?  We hope you enjoy the song.

It’s a colors song for young children. This song was written and performed by A.J. Jenkins. Video by KidsTV123. Copyright 2018 A.J.Jenkins/KidsTV123: All rights reserved. This is an ORIGINAL song written in 2018 – any copying is illegal. For MP3s, worksheets and much more: http://www.KidsTV123.com kids songs song for children Chords Capo 3rd …

Parents, the booklet attached below is by Axel Scheffler.   It was written together with Professor Graham Medley (Professor of Infectious Disease Modelling), Head teachers and Child Psychologist Dr Sarah Carman.   It is an accessible booklet which can be read in parts or all at once.  We hope it is useful to you and your family. Please click on the link below to access the booklet.
These Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler poems (in the link below) show familiar characters social distancing.  You may like to share them with your children.
Have a great Summer.  All the P1 team are really looking forward to seeing you in August!

NURSERY – Fun and Learning at Home

Good Morning Everyone,

We hope you have all had a good weekend.

Keeping In Touch

We have enjoyed seeing your new photo’s on your Learning Journals, thank you for keeping in touch.  Since Covid-19 has had an effect on our lives and home learning began, you have responded and risen to this challenge amazingly by continuing to keep your little one’s minds active with fun learning experiences, invaluable life skills and lots of fresh air and exercise, which is so important for their health and wellbeing.

The Learning Journals have proved to be a great resource helping us to remain contacted with our families – we are very proud to announce that so far we have received over 464 posts from families keeping us updated with their child’s learning and progress.  Thank you so much for this, we are very proud of all our little ones and everything they do.  Please continue to keep in touch, this not only helps to build and maintain relationships between families and our Early Years Team it also gives us an understanding of your child’s experiences and how they have developed and coped over these last few months helping us to support them further when they return to nursery.

Sports Day at Home

Did you make your own Medal?  We hope you rewarded yourself for trying hard – you deserved it!

Our own little learner organised her sports day independently at home for her family to participate in and look at the fun they had. Well done – what a star! We are very proud of you.

Well done to everyone for trying this at home, we are so proud of you all.

Cycling

Have you had fun staying active? We have enjoyed looking at all the photo’s you have shared with us and many have been outdoors exploring Calderwood and Almondell on bikes, scooters and foot.

Another little learner of ours has shared his amazing cycling achievements, what a star!

Encouraging your little one to cycle or scooter promotes many learning experiences whilst having fun.

  • Moving at different speeds, levels and directions and understanding speed in simple terms.
  • Maintaining balance when moving.
  • Developing knowledge and understanding of what a quality movement looks like and feels like.
  • Starting and stopping quickly and understanding speed in simple terms.
  • Learning how to stay safe with using equipment safely and being aware of roads, traffic cyclists and pedestrians.
  • Developing an awareness of self and an increasing self-reliance in dealing with new situations and new learning.

West Lothian Libraries

Information from West Lothian Libraries to share with our families.

As we approach some lockdown restrictions being eased and your services resuming in some way I am contacting you to advise about the digital resources we have available free to children who are members of West Lothian libraries.  I would be grateful if you could share this information with parents and carers please.

Every child in West Lothian can and should be a West Lothian library member and we endeavour to engage with and register as many children as possible as part of the ECALM initiative.  However, if a child is not already a library member and their parents/carers are interested in their child becoming a library member then they can simply complete the online application here: http://bit.ly/Join-WL-libraries they will then be sent their child’s membership information and will have access to our digital resources and all of our libraries when we reopen.

During the lockdown we have significantly increased our collection of children’s e-Books and e-Audio books.  These can be accessed here: https://bit.ly/WLlibebooksChildren

We also have also purchased e-Books and e-audio books which allow multiple downloads, so there are no waiting lists for these.  The latest addition is Flying Fergus, The Great Cycle Challenge by Sir Chris Hoy and this can be accessed here: https://bit.ly/FlyingFergusTgcc

The e-audio books are particularly good for younger children providing them with their own personal story times, often with famous actors or even the authors themselves narrating.

If you require any assistance on the use of these resources or library membership applications please do not hesitate to contact me. Email: helene.rennie@westlothian.gov.uk

Hopefully this week’s weather and our summer ahead will continue to provide lots of opportunities to get outdoors with your little one and enjoy the benefits of fresh air and exercise.  Please continue to share your fantastic photos, news and everything that makes you so very proud of your little learners as much as we are.

NURSERY – Sports Day at Home

Hello Everyone,

June is usually the month we have our Nursery Sports Day with the children. We don’t want them to miss out on this fun event and so for this week’s Fun Learning at Home we are suggesting they have their own safe one at home with family. Please take photos and share with us on Home Learning in Learning Journals, stating whether you mind us sharing your photos or not on our nursery blog.

Sports Day supports and encourages many Health and Wellbeing learning opportunities

  • Moving at different speeds, levels and directions with others in a designated space.
  • Sustaining energetic levels of play/activity.
  • Practising different ways of being active.
  • Staying on task that may seem challenging, to achieve successes.
  • Building eye/hand and eye/foot co-ordination.
  • Sharing and co-operating when interacting with others.
  • Learning how to be a good winner and cope appropriately with losing.

The Nursery Ladies have been working hard, practising and demonstrating fun activities for you to try at home. Please find below easy to follow instructions with photo demonstrations.

Bean bag race – If you don’t have a bean bag (like me!) take a pair of socks & fold them into a ball. Place the rolled-up socks onto your head and either race a parent/sibling around your garden or see how far you can walk around your garden before it falls of your head! I managed two laps of my garden before they fell off.

Coconut shy – Stack up some cans in a triangle on a table, take a ball and stand a few steps back from the table. Throw the ball and count how many you can knock over.  Once you knock over all the cans you can try stacking up more cans or moving further away.

Optional: A four-legged friend could bring your ball back if you miss.

Welly Toss – We decided upon which welly we wanted to use, and the youngest person then went first to throw the welly. We then all had a turn of throwing the welly, we marked where it landed with a stone and the person who threw it the farthest was the winner (it was me).

Wheelbarrow Race – Pair up with another member of your family, one person can be the “wheelbarrow” and lies on their front on the grass, and the other is the “driver” and stands by the other persons feet. Before the race begins, the driver picks up the wheelbarrows ankles and the wheelbarrow lifts themselves onto their hands. Then….. Ready, Steady, GO! Once you are halfway to the finish line you can swap over.

Running Race – Choose a starting point to begin your race and a finishing point. My little girl chose to start at one side of the garden, run to the end and back to the start. One person can use the stopwatch on their phone to time how fast each member of your family takes to run and see who is the fastest.

Dribbling – You will need a ball and some cones or substitute cones (I have used bottles from the recycling) and filled them with water making them heavier, so they don’t fall over. You then dribble the ball in and out of the ‘cones’ as many times as you like, keeping the ball close to your feet and trying to avoid knocking the ‘cones’ over.  Both me and my brother did 3 reps of this.

Bouncing a ball – Take a ball. Count how many times you can make it bounce. Can you show that number? (a grown up might have to help with this bit). Think… What surface does it bounce best on?

Egg and spoon race – Each competitor is given a soup or dessert spoon and an egg/small ball, e.g. golf ball to put on the spoon. Competitors must hold the spoon by the handle and NOT hold/touch/secure the egg!

The competitors line up at the starting line and when they are told to “go” they run as fast as they can without dropping the egg/ball. If the egg drops and breaks, they are out/ if the ball falls off the spoon, they can put it back on the spoon and begin to run again towards the finishing line. The first person over the line wins!!

Three legged race – You will need: 2 people and something to tie your legs together (Rope, Ribbon, Dressing gown tie, skipping rope). Set a marker to where you are going to run to, tie your legs together and get ready to GO! If there is more than 1 team you can race each other, and the winners are the team that reaches the finish marker first. If there is only 1 team you could time yourself and see how fast you can do it.

You will need to work as a team to make sure you move your legs at the same time, or you might fall! This will develop your coordination, communication and problem-solving skills.

Sack race – 1. Use a pillowcase instead of a sack for a sack race.

2.Everyone climb into their pillowcase before the race starts.

3.Get ready on the start line and

4.”On your marks get set go”

5.Jump in your pillowcase moving all the way to the finish line!

Throwing – 1. You will need a pot or a bowl and a pair of socks paired together.

2.Set the pot/bowl on a countertop or a table if you wish to do this outdoors.

3.Move 2 big step back from the pot/bowl.

4.Attempt to throw the paired socks into the pot/bowl.

5.If you do this successfully you can take a step back to make it more challenging.

Jumping – Can you do the hurdles? Get 5 teddies and place them in a line, spaced apart. Can you jump over them all?  Can you jump over little teddies and big teddies?

Obstacle course – 1. Paper plate with middle taken out and decorated, you can use a kitchen roll holder or something similar to through plate over.

  1. Hula Hoop – step through then place over your head or use your imagination and pretend you have one.
  2. Throwing the ball in the bucket and if you have a hoop stand in it.
  3. Hopscotch – Use paper squares or chalk to draw them.
  4. Horsey Horsey – Use a cushion between your legs or any other soft toy.
  5. Pram or any other moveable toy.

We hope you all have lots of fun trying! You can even make your own medal or certificate to reward all your good sport and effort. Please find template links here for medal and here for certificate.

Remember to have a look at http://blogs.glowscotland.org,uk/wl/snonursery for more learning at home ideas.

We look forward to seeing your photos.

N-P1 Transition Task – Week 4

Week 4 Transition Task

We hope you are enjoying the transition tasks so far – it has been lovely to see and hear about some of the activities you have been doing based around the stories we have shared so far 🙂

This week is another story for you. It’s called ‘Charlie and Lola – I am too absolutely small for school’. Please see details below for the story and a suggested activity.

Week 4 Transition Task – Charlie and Lola – I’m Too Absolutely Small For School

Hi everyone, here is your next transition activity.  It is all to do with the story book ‘Charlie and Lola – I Am Too Absolutely Small for School’.  If you have the book at home, then ask someone in your family to read it to you.  If you don’t have it, click on the link below to hear the story.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHjRzSFyn50

Lola is a bit of a fussy eater so is not very sure about lunchtimes! Do you think you will try a school dinner, or take your own packed lunch?

Here is a little task for you.  Can you plan and prepare a healthy packed lunch that you might want to take to school?  You could do this by drawing it, or you could actually make up a packed lunch and eat it at home or in your garden!

Feel free to take some pictures and send them into us.  Have fun!
