Welcome back from P5!

Welcome back after our Easter break! We hope everyone had a brilliant time and are looking forward to our final term before the Summer!

This week we have had a look at Data and Data Analysis in Maths and Numeracy. We had to extract data from graphs and charts. One group also tried out creating their own bar charts and bar line charts.

In Writing we started our new genre – Information Report writing. We looked at the big book example which was all about Firefighters. We discussed all the elements of this and then created our own take on this.

In reading we continued our class novel and discussed some words we needed to clarify. Some examples were –

skeletal

trifle

gloomy

descent

primeval

surge

instinctively

coiling

stalagmites

fluttered

sonorous

expedition

updraft

meadow

broad

soaring

ignorance

trembling

Here are our thoughts on the story so far:

Ariah – It’s good, but at the end of every chapter it is a mystery as to what will happen next!

Erin R – In my opinion it is very nerve-wracking but exciting.

Ryley – When we first started the book I was wondering what would happen. Now I know the chapters are really short, I look forward to seeing what will happen next.

Gracie – The book is really exciting and I’m excited to see what the owl does!

In PE this week we began to learn the skills involved in badminton. We practised a low serve, high serve and how to return the shuttlecock to start a rally. We also practised keeping control of the shuttlecock on our racket.

We look forward to another week of learning next week!

P1 this week

Primary 1 have had another very busy week.

In writing we have been working on the ‘ai’ sound.

We have been writing fairy tales and imagining who the main character was, what happened to them and who came to rescue them.

In maths we have been continuing to explore measure using non-standard units.  We don’t think this is a very accurate way of measuring as all the cubes and items are different sizes.    We have been working on our number bonds and addition facts and we all had a great time using sumdog games based learning to help us practise our skills.
We have a school subscription to Sumdog and it can be used at home.  www.sumdog.com  If you need a copy of the username and password please let us know.

In digital learning, we have found out that algorithms are sequences of instructions.  We tried following algorithms in the classroom and we had fun with an ‘unplugged’ algorithm to draw a crazy character.

We then tried using ScratchJr to code the sprite to move in a specific way.  We were writing an algorithm using blocks.  It was a challenge at times, but great fun.

Happy Easter from P4 Class

Image previewImage preview

We made portraits of people we love using the style of an artist known as Romero Britto.  We then wrote a description of them using lots of adjectives and similes.

We have been practicing our ability to add tone and expression in our reading as well as answering questions around what we have read.

All week, we have been revising on all numeracy and maths topics which we have covered throughout term 2. Overall, we have enjoyed our week!

Have a happy Easter everyone!

Art

The children have enjoyed some Easter crafts this week. We found it challenging to measure the paper to make sure the hats would fit on our heads!

Writing

We have been working hard on descriptive writing over the last few weeks. The children have described a friend in the class, objects in the class and their own bedroom. It has been lovely to see how much the children have progressed in their writing!

Maths

This week the children were learning about quarter past the hour with Mrs Lockhart. They were also painting pictures of the different seasons.

P2 will be moving to Twitter after the break. I will post the link so you can follow us!

Have a lovely Easter break!

P3/4 retell the Easter Story

Primary 3/4 have been very busy recently re-creating the Easter Story.

They have designed and painted the scenery and props.  They have written the scripts and have planned and organised their groups and delegated who was going to do what in the project.  They have directed and filmed a short stop frame animation, and are delighted to share it.

You can view their animation here:

What a fantastic effort P3/4 – well done!

Weekly Update From Primary One

Welcome to our last blog post of the term.  It was lovely to speak to so many of you this week and give you an update on your child’s progress. If you did not manage to make an appointment please contact the office and we can arrange a telephone call after the Easter holidays.

Classroom Spring Garden Centre

This week the children have continued to enjoy planting and looking after our seeds. The beans seeds are beginning to sprout!

Technology

On Thursday, the children enjoyed developing their coding skills in our technology room.

Active Numeracy

The children have continued to practise their addition, subtraction and number building skills this week using a number of active games. Great fun was had by all!

Writing – Descriptive

Our last descriptive piece of writing this week, was titled My Classroom. The children had to descibe our classroom- how big it is, what is in it and what we do in it. Some great examples below-

As well as carrying out formal writing activities, the children really enjoy creating independent pieces. They are doing so well. I am so proud of them.

I hope you and your family have a lovely Easter break. I will now post updates on twitter. Please follow (and like)  us @MrsFlemingP1

What have P6 Been up to this Week?

Literacy

In group reading some of us practised our inference skills, some of us our prediction skills and some of us worked out what tricky words meant using our context skills.

Writing

This week as part of our descriptive writing we wrote about about a friend or family member.

Joel – I wrote about Fraser. He is sometimes energetic and a technology mastermind!

Bailey – I wrote about Piotr because when he is near the goal in football he passes and doesn’t always shoot.

Debbie – I wrote about my friend who is really nice.

Bella – I wrote about my sister Cara because she is very special to me.

Here we are Group Reading

We read our group novels, listening to each other and use our contextual skills to work out any unknown words!

Numeracy

We practised subtracting decimals to 2 decimal places. We used mental and formal methods.

We also played SUMDOG to practise our general maths and numeracy skills.

ICT – Coding

We practised using our coding skills to turn an object, use a loop and a variable. We also debugged when there was a problem.

Health

We learnt about the importance of eating a balanced diet and looked at the ‘Eatwell plate.’

PE

We continued to improve our gymnastic skills. Watching olympic gymnasts online has given us inspiration.

Here is Piotr’s balance.

We peer assessed our work.

Science – The Water Cycle

In groups we acted out the water cycle.

Fraser is the sun and this group have evaporated to become a cloud!

Outdoor Learning

Katie – We planted more trees.

Emily – We had to clear out the compost bins and had to take everything out in a black bag.

Alexis – Debbie said she felt sick because she was holding the bag of compost.

Debbie – The paper came and took pictures of us planting trees with the P1s.

Some of us were still thinking about Ukraine.

A Weekly Round Up From P5

This week in Primary 5 has been a busy one!

In Green Gym this week we played a game where we were pretending to be bees collecting the pollen. For this, there were holes in cups and we had to collect water using these, trying not to lose too much water, then take it back to fill a bucket. When we were bringing it back we had to do a wiggle dance like a bee would! We found this funny but a little bit awkward too!

We then worked in groups using a variety of materials to create a shelter.

In digital learning we were coding using conditions and a hit command.

In Writing this week, we completed our Descriptive genre assessment. We got to choose a person to write about and describe. We described what they look like, their personality and the things they like to do.

Here we are busy at work on our assessments:

In Numeracy, we continued our money topic. We looked at adding and subtracting amounts of money as well as trying some money problems. We also played some interactive money games.

We also enjoyed doing some Easter activities!

We hope everyone has a lovely Easter and enjoys the holidays!!!

Outdoor Learning

Deans Primary are trying to create a suitable and exciting outdoor learning space within the school grounds. Unfortunately, we are being hampered by vandals who destroy our newly planted trees, take apart out new Willow shelter and continually damage our bug hotel and newly erected structure that will be part of our area of biodiversity. On the last occasion some of the nursery items were also destroyed. The children and staff of the school would like to ask the community to support our endeavours.
