P65 Week Ending Friday 20th May

Monday

Language today we continued our work on Shakespeare’s Richard III. Some children took on his role in a hot seat drama activity, and we then all asked him questions. We also got new spelling words.

In maths today we continued work on sequences of number, negative number and related this to temperature.

In P.E. we practised our skills for landing on mats from jumps.

The class also split in two to continue the health work from Jigsaw.

We also spent some time practising our Chinese.

Tuesday

Literacy: Spelling as usual.

Maths: we all worked on money, one group on addition, another on division and the third on related word problems.

In health today the class split into P5s and P6s and we worked from the Jigsaw program.

We also did coding with Mrs B.

To support our learning on China this afternoon we made paper dragons.

Wednesday

The class spent their time with Mrs D working on their area and other gardening.

For maths the class continued their work on temperature.

For literacy we did spelling as usual, and related the maths work to reading comprehension.

After lunch we made the most of the good weather and went out to the TrimTrak. Some of the children from this class took the opportunity to play with the smaller children in their playground.

The live link with Chinese students to continue topic work was excellent, teaching how to write Chinese characters and how to identify the radicals that help make their meanings clearer.

At the end of the day we finished the dragons we had started on Tuesday.

Thursday

Literacy was a reading comprehension activity on the same Chinese story as the previous week, and how this created designs for willow pattern china. And spelling.

Maths was looking at planning activities and areas of study for the rest of the year.

We did an additional activity looking at the football match of the previous night and the importance of being good sports.

The health activity on “what is normal” today was lead by Mark.

For another health activity today we looked at the jobs of the people coming to the careers afternoon next month.

Friday

Maths: times tables and decimals

Literacy: spelling as usual

Went out to playground with infants.

This week in Primary 5

This week in P5 we have continued our digital learning. Our learning intentions this week were to write a code and to use a variable. For to be successful in this we had to write a block code which included a variable, a random and a click event. We then had to post a link to our Teams page once we had achieved this.

In Spelling we had the choice of which written spelling task we wanted to do today. Here are some photos of our finished tasks:

We continue practising our fluency and phrasing when we read in our groups. It is important that we all work harder on using expression consistently.

In Writing this week, we used our notes from last week to create Information Reports on a chosen animal. We had to ensure we had sub-headings this week as well as write in the present tense.

In Numeracy we returned to our Money topic this week. We looked at rounding amounts of money and in the other we looked at change from £1 and £2. We also did some interactive games where we had to add amounts of money. We were doing this against the clock! We discussed using our knowledge of friendly numbers to help with this.

In topic we completed an end of topic assessment for our Space topic and began some research for our Dinosaurs topic!

As of next week we are going to start having all our information and learning on Twitter instead of the Blog! Please follow: @MrsHillanP5

A Short Week in P5

This is just a short week for us this week with us having the Monday holiday and Thursday is an Inservice day for staff.

In Writing this week we worked on our note taking skills to create notes for our next Information report. This week we chose the theme of Animals. Mrs Hillan showed an example someone had written about a Shark and then together we took notes on Mrs Hillan’s choice of a Lion. We then went off on our own to individually take notes on a chosen animal, ready to write about this next week. We had the opportunity to use a laptop if we needed to.

In Numeracy we did our final data and data analysis work. Next week we will go back to looking at money.

In Reading, we continued our class novel. We revisited our reciprocal reading strategy of Questioning and created some open and closed questions for characters in the story.

In topic, we did our final Space presentations about the final planets in our solar system. Our class Space Encyclopedia is going to look amazing!!!

We also introduced our new topic of Dinosaurs!!!! We are excited to learn more about this!

We look forward to working on some new things next week!

An update from P5

We have had a fun and busy week in P5 this week.

In Green Gym we were given various activities to choose from such as making bandanas using cloth and bit of leaves, grass etc. We used stones and rocks to rub the grass etc inside the cloth and then the colour rubbed off on to the cloth. We also got to build dens, make bird feeders and create little decorations using nails, wood and leaves etc.

In Digital learning we started off the lesson by discussing hardware and software and the differences between these.

Examples of hardware – phone, ipad, laptop, smartboard, computer, console.

Examples of software – apps, wifi, glow, games etc.

We also coded Hungry Snake, where we had to put eggs around the place for the snake to find, but if he touched a rotten egg then the snake had to disappear!

In Numeracy we finished off our data analysis work from last week. In one group we looked at interpreting data from a database and graphs and in the other group we looked at using tally charts to gain information.

In Reading we continued to work on clarifying unknown words in a text. We used our group texts this week and found some really interesting words!

Examples of words we clarified:

hazy, mangy, oblige, contraption, sorrow, particular, wistful, adamant.

We are working hard to do the final work on our Space topic. We have worked in groups again to research the last planets ready to present these and include these in our class encyclopedia.

In Writing this week we picked a different job role to write about. We had to start by making some notes on the job we wanted to write about. Mrs Hillan showed us an example for a nurse. We were given the opportunity to use laptops to research any information we weren’t sure of that we wanted to include.

In spelling this week we created word searches using our words. We also picked from a variety of our strategies such as spelling tennis, back writing and noughts and crosses.

In PE this week we had our second session of badminton skills where we practised different serves. We also went on to have a go at some short games.

Remember it is a holiday on Monday! Enjoy the long weekend!

Welcome back from P5!

Welcome back after our Easter break! We hope everyone had a brilliant time and are looking forward to our final term before the Summer!

This week we have had a look at Data and Data Analysis in Maths and Numeracy. We had to extract data from graphs and charts. One group also tried out creating their own bar charts and bar line charts.

In Writing we started our new genre – Information Report writing. We looked at the big book example which was all about Firefighters. We discussed all the elements of this and then created our own take on this.

In reading we continued our class novel and discussed some words we needed to clarify. Some examples were –

skeletal

trifle

gloomy

descent

primeval

surge

instinctively

coiling

stalagmites

fluttered

sonorous

expedition

updraft

meadow

broad

soaring

ignorance

trembling

Here are our thoughts on the story so far:

Ariah – It’s good, but at the end of every chapter it is a mystery as to what will happen next!

Erin R – In my opinion it is very nerve-wracking but exciting.

Ryley – When we first started the book I was wondering what would happen. Now I know the chapters are really short, I look forward to seeing what will happen next.

Gracie – The book is really exciting and I’m excited to see what the owl does!

In PE this week we began to learn the skills involved in badminton. We practised a low serve, high serve and how to return the shuttlecock to start a rally. We also practised keeping control of the shuttlecock on our racket.

We look forward to another week of learning next week!

P1 this week

Primary 1 have had another very busy week.

In writing we have been working on the ‘ai’ sound.

We have been writing fairy tales and imagining who the main character was, what happened to them and who came to rescue them.

In maths we have been continuing to explore measure using non-standard units.  We don’t think this is a very accurate way of measuring as all the cubes and items are different sizes.    We have been working on our number bonds and addition facts and we all had a great time using sumdog games based learning to help us practise our skills.
We have a school subscription to Sumdog and it can be used at home.  www.sumdog.com  If you need a copy of the username and password please let us know.

In digital learning, we have found out that algorithms are sequences of instructions.  We tried following algorithms in the classroom and we had fun with an ‘unplugged’ algorithm to draw a crazy character.

We then tried using ScratchJr to code the sprite to move in a specific way.  We were writing an algorithm using blocks.  It was a challenge at times, but great fun.

P3/4 retell the Easter Story

Primary 3/4 have been very busy recently re-creating the Easter Story.

They have designed and painted the scenery and props.  They have written the scripts and have planned and organised their groups and delegated who was going to do what in the project.  They have directed and filmed a short stop frame animation, and are delighted to share it.

You can view their animation here:

What a fantastic effort P3/4 – well done!

A Weekly Round Up From P5

This week in Primary 5 has been a busy one!

In Green Gym this week we played a game where we were pretending to be bees collecting the pollen. For this, there were holes in cups and we had to collect water using these, trying not to lose too much water, then take it back to fill a bucket. When we were bringing it back we had to do a wiggle dance like a bee would! We found this funny but a little bit awkward too!

We then worked in groups using a variety of materials to create a shelter.

In digital learning we were coding using conditions and a hit command.

In Writing this week, we completed our Descriptive genre assessment. We got to choose a person to write about and describe. We described what they look like, their personality and the things they like to do.

Here we are busy at work on our assessments:

In Numeracy, we continued our money topic. We looked at adding and subtracting amounts of money as well as trying some money problems. We also played some interactive money games.

We also enjoyed doing some Easter activities!

We hope everyone has a lovely Easter and enjoys the holidays!!!

P5’s Weekly Update

This week in P5 we have had another session of Green Gym where we continued to build the Willow Den but we also got the opportunity to do some tight-rope walking if we wanted to! This was lots of fun and made Mrs Hillan giggle quite a lot!

Ryley – I found it quite exciting to go on the tight-rope. At first I found it quite scary, but after a few times I enjoyed it.

Sophie C – I was looking at the tight-rope at thought that I didn’t want to go on it, but when I did, it was fine.

Chloe – The tight-rope was hard and when you got the hang of it, you could do it.

Olivia – I loved the tight-rope walk and I never even found it hard!

Lewis R – The tight-rope looked a bit scary, but when I went on it, it was fine.

Gracie – It was fun adding some bits to the willow den.

Sophie G – At first the tight-rope looked quite scary, but when you went on it was ok. I liked helping people go along it.

Kayleigh – At first I couldn’t get on, but when I did it was fun!

Kullyn – It was fun at first, but when I fell I got embarrassed. But it got better along the way.

In Writing this week we looked at poetry as Monday was World Poetry Day. We all discussed and then created our own ‘Thank you’ poems, where we said what a Thank you looks like, smells like, tastes like, sounds like and feels like. Have a look at some of our super efforts:

For Spelling this week we used our spelling words to create a ‘Spelling Poem’. Some of us put a lot of thought into these. It was good for us to know that a poem doesn’t have to rhyme. We also played a game where we wrote our spelling words twice and then shuffled them, turned them upside down and took turns trying to find spelling word pairs.

In Numeracy we completed our money assessments and played some interactive money games. Mrs Hillan tested our knowledge on giving change so that she knows how much we know so far. We also looked more in depth at counting amounts of money using coins and notes.

We completed our Roundhouses last week for our Celtic topic – take a look!!!

For our Space topic this week, we presented our group posters to the rest of the class.

Weekly Update from Primary 5

This week in Primary 5 we continued our digital learning block. We started off this week by looking at our internet user agreement and agreed on how we should behave online and the consequences for not behaving appropriately. We then continued our coding work.

In Spelling this week we tried a new technique for practising our words. Mrs Hillan gave us some art straws, and we used these to spell out our words!

In reading we have returned to looking at our reciprocal reading skills in Clarifying. We selected words from our text to guess their meaning, then try to work out their meaning using clues from the text. Here are some good words we picked:

barnicles

carcass

paraffin

unhesitatingly

distinctive

ordinary

liberty

vague

In writing this week we created our second Descriptive piece, this time on a person we know. Mrs Hillan showed us an example that someone had written about their mum and she showed us an example she had written about her dad. We then used these to inspire us to write about one of the people who we love.

We had our second Green Gym session this week. One group helped to repair and secure a willow den in our field, and the second group created a burrow to hopefully help the bees to create a nest.

In topic this week we returned to our Space topic and in groups we created posters on individual planets. These posters will be presented in front of the class and then put into a whole class encyclopaedia. Here we are working on these:
