This week, in our class garden centre we have been looking at different  life-cyles. Firstly we tracked the life cycle of a bean, (we planted beans last week and are patiently waiting for shoots to appear) some pictures below-

Then we looked at the life cycle of an apple blossom tree. We planted some apple seeds and are hoping that they grow so that, we can transfer them into pots for the children to take home and plant in their own gardens.

The children then went onto create their own apple blossom tree life cycle diagram.

Weekly Update From Primary One

We have had another really busy week in Primary One. The children have choosen some of their learning that they would like to share with you.

Maths – Measure

We have begun looking at measure. In Primary one we measure using non-standard units. The children have been practising measuring areas in the classroom as well as each other. They drew around their foot and used the foot print to measure objects. Louie quickly discovered that this is not an accurate way to measure as everyone has different sized feet.

The children also tried using a measuring tape-

Writing – The Three Little Pigs

This week as part of our imaginagtive writing the children had to write about a house. They had to say where it was, what it was made from and who lived there. Great discussion followed by some fantastic writing.

When the children had finished writing their stories I set them a challenge to build a house that the big bad wolf could not blow down. Some pictures below of their imaginative houses-

Weekly Update From Primary One

Happy New Year to you and your family. I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and managed to stay well.

Welcome to the first blog post of 2022. The children are  happy to be back at school and have settled  in well . The children have choosen some of this weeks work they would like to share with you-

Literacy – Writing

This term we are focusing on a new writing genre and  will be exploring narrative/descriptive writing.  To get us started we received a very important letter from Jack (from Jack and the Beanstalk) telling us that the giant had followed him down the beanstalk and had escaped. A picture of the glitter trail that led to a letter in our library corner.

We decided that we would we use our imagination to think about where the giant could be hiding and how he was feeling. The children came up with super ideas e.g. behind the beanstalk, on the roof, in the forest etc. We also had some great describing words when writing about how the giant  might be feeling, such as miserable, suprised and lonely. Some examples below-

Numeracy – Time

As well as our normal numeracy we are going to learn about time. We began by looking at daily routines and the children drew things  they do in the morning, afternoon and at night. This enables the children to link daily routines and personal events to time sequences. Some pictures below-

We have also really enjoyed reading and making hungry capterpillars to help us sequence the days of the week.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and I will be back next week with more updates from Primary 1.
