I would just like to say a big thank you for all the support you have given the children and school since August, it has been very different year and hopefully next year at some point, we can welcome parents back into the school building. I hope you all have a brilliant Christmas and a very happy new year and I look forward to welcoming the children back on Wednesday the 6th of January 2021. Take care and be safe!

Merry Christmas from Primary 1B

Primary 1B would like to take this opportunity in our final blog post of 2020, to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Our last week of term has flown past, filled with parties, Christmas crafts and lots of Christmas fun. Here are some pictures of what we have been getting up to.

Happy Christmas everyone!

Mrs Stevenson and Primary 1B

A Digital Nativity

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, our Nativity production this year looks very different.  All classes in the school have been involved in creating a stop frame animation of The Christmas Story.

The story was divided into scenes, with each class being responsible for a scene.  Pupils made the scenery and props, and set up the scene for their class.  Everyone in the class was involved in helping to animate their class scene, and pupils were able to work in small groups at a safe distance.

The stop frame animation involved positioning the characters in the scene, taking a photo, then moving the characters a very small distance.  Another photo taken, another tiny movement made, another photo taken, and this was repeated over 100 times for each scene.  When all the pictures are sequenced and viewed one after another, the characters appear to move by themselves.

There has been a huge amount of work from the pupils involved in creating this year’s Nativity – well done everyone.
We all hope that you enjoy watching it.

This Week in P3/2

Literacy

During writing this week, we were focusing on varying our sentence length when writing a Viking dairy entry. We had to include connecting words, adjectives and facts we have learned about the Vikings.

During reading, we were sounding out unfamiliar words and then answering reading comprehension questions about our text.

“We were answering questions about our reading books.”

We use the look, say, cover, write strategy to help us sound out words containing our spelling pattern. In groups, we also played a tricky word flash card game.

Maths

This week, we learned more about addition. We were learning to use column sums to help us add bigger numbers. It is very important we remember our knowledge from place value when using this method.

“We used Number Talks to discuss the different strategies we can use when adding.”

“This week, we were learning to add using column sums.”

IDL

This week, we were learning about the Lewis Chessmen. These were found on the Lewis Island in 1831. There were 93 gaming pieces in total. Each piece is different and you can see these today at National Museum of Scotland.

“The Lewis Chessmen are the game pieces that the Vikings use to play chess.”

“The game pieces were carved from walrus ivory and whales’ teeth.”

Update from P2

Have a read to see what we have been up to this week!

Christmas Story

Mr Welsh read us one of our favourite stories yesterday! We showed super listening skills and were paying close attention to see if we could hear our boost words!

Writing

During writing this week we wrote letters to Santa persuading him that we have been good this year. Some of our arguments include hoovering the rug, being kind and helping to do the dishes!

Christmas Lunch

We had such a delicious Christmas lunch on Wednesday! After our lunch, we wrote letters to the lunch ladies to thank them for our wonderful food. We tried super hard to use adjectives to describe our lunch.

STEM Challenge

On Tuesday, we began learning about the Christmas story. We learned that Baby Jesus was born in a stable. We had to demonstrate our collaboration, communication and leadership skills whilst working with the people next to us to build our very own stables! We had lots of materials to choose from but had to think hard about which materials should be used where. We discovered that the kitchen roll tubes were the best material to make the sides of the stable!

Salt Dough Hands

On Thursday, we each had a batch of salt dough and we had to print our hands into the dough. Once the dough has had a chance to dry over the weekend, we will paint them next week and bring them home!

Christmas Jumper Day

Look how great we all look in our Christmas jumpers!

Today we all said goodbye and good luck to Miss Hennessy as she is leaving to work in a new school. We are all very sad to see her go but wish her the best of luck and hope to see her again very soon.
