P6/7

It’s been a very busy week in P6/7!

At the start of the week we all chose a book from the Waterstone’s website to add to our new class library. We look forward to them arriving soon.

On Tuesday our P7’s went to a Sports festival at Craigswood. After getting changed the P7’s took part in approximately 12 activities such as hurdles, javelin, long jump and sprinting. They had a great time but everyone was very tired the next day!

In maths we have been working on multiplication by two digits, square roots and division. Next week we will be moving onto angles.

As part of our work on information writing we have been creating information leaflets about Japan. Work on these is still ongoing and we hope to print them off next week for our display.

In health we have been discussing celebrating differences and recognising individuals for their qualities. We also discussed gender stereotyping and how this can affect us in daily life.

P6/7 have created some excellent art work as part of our topic on Japan. For this they had to complete pictures of Japanese creatures, paying particular attention to proportion, symmetry and detail.

Finally, some staff from Deans Community High School came down to work with the P7’s on their science passport as part of their transition activities for high school.

A Busy Week in Primary 2/1

It’s been another busy week in Primary 2/1. We have been busy learning our songs and actions for the Christmas Nativity Performance. We are looking forward to sharing it with all our friends and family.

In numeracy this week we have had a big focus on using the symbols = and + in number stories. We have been investigating all the different ways to make 10. We are becoming more confident adding groups together mentally and using strategies such as counters and drawing pictures to help us. We made a ladybird display in our classroom to help us remember all the different ways to add up to ten.

The boys and girls had lots of good ideas on how our display should look.

Here are some examples of how we like to learn in Primary 2/1.

In Health and Wellbeing this week we are still celebrating differences. Through this we have been looking at the topic of bullying. We shared our ideas on what we thought bullying would look like and how it might make us feel.  We discussed what we could do or who we could talk to if we thought bullying was happening in our school. We had a go a drawing some pictures to illustrate a bullying situation and we were able to talk about our pictures and describe what was happening in each. We are becoming so confident when discussing our work and are trying extra hard to add lots of important details into our drawings.

We are looking forward to welcoming friends and families tomorrow for our Book Bug Launch in the hall.

P7 Health and Wellbeing – Celebrating Difference

Primary 7 have started their Celebrating Difference programme by learning to challenge prejudice and discrimination. This will enable the children to identify what is important for them and what their expectations are. They have to take into account the beliefs and expectations that others have for themselves.

The children will be covering activities to help them become more assertive by communicating their feelings in the correct way.

We will let you know how we get on.

Celebrating Differences

This week in Health and Wellbeing we have had a focus on celebrating our similarities and differences.  We started off by having a discussion about what makes us special. Here are some of examples that the children contributed to the discussion.

Elkie – ‘I love my guinea pigs’.

Euan ‘I have been to Lego land’.

Erica ‘ I love underwater creatures’.

Belle ‘I love coming to school and learning’.

Next we teamed up with Primary 1 to play a game of ‘Switch’. We had to listen to a statement, for example, ‘I have a little brother’ and stand up if it applied to us. We then had to find a friend who was also standing to switch places with. It was lots of fun and made us realise we have lots of similarities with our friends.

We then played a game of spot the difference. We examined 2 pictures and had to explain what was different and what was the same in each. It was harder than it looked!

In the last activity we had to work with a partner and find three similarities between us and draw them onto a picture. Most of us noticed that we were all wearing a similar uniform and some of us even had the same hair colour.

We are looking forward to what next week’s  Health and Wellbeing lesson will involve!

Another great week in P3/4

Maths

In numeracy this week the children were learning about rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. We used our big numbers square rug to help us understand the rule of rounding to the nearest 10 and 100. Ask them about it, I’m sure they would love to tell you it.

In maths we continued learning to tell the time. Some of the children were even telling the time in five minute increments. All the children were working super hard. I can see that they are using their home learning time to practice this.

Creative Arts

This week the children were shown a clip from the Disney classic Bambi. We listened to and watched the scene of the  April Showers. While watching we were discussing how the music reflects what is happening in this part of the film.

After this the children were then asked to listen to Vivaldi-Storm and imagine what story this piece of music is telling. I loved that P3/4 could describe which emotions could be linked to both of these pieces.

Health and Wellbeing

There is currently a whole school focus, this is celebrating difference. This week primary 3/4 we exploring similarities and differences within our own families and families all over the world. We used our JIGSAW resources to help us discuss what constitutes as family in modern day society. We all got to share things about all our wonderful families and compare what might be similar or different with each other. The children then drew a family portrait, and inside the frames they wrote down the words that best reflects their family and how much they mean to them. Difference is something to celebrate and as a class we showed a great deal of respect towards each of our differences and similarities. Well done everyone!

P7 Maths

P7 have been learning to add, subtract, multiply and divide using the order of operation.

The children have found that many calculations have to be completed in a specific order. An easy way to remember which part of the calculation comes first is using the mnemonic BOMDAS.

Primary 3 are learning to use ICT

This week has been another very busy week.  The children have been learning to use ICT to present information.  They have collaborated to share their ideas about what they have been learning this week, and have written up their usual reflection sheet.

They are now extending their learning to incorporate ICT to share their ideas with a wider audience.  They have been working with a partner to type up their ideas.  We hope you enjoy reading their work.

Deans Den

We continue to work hard in Deans Den. We are learning to become more independent and taking part in snack helps us to do so. First we clean the table to help get rid of any germs. Next one member of the group hands out the placemats, whilst other children hand out the plates and cups. Mrs Morrison will prepare the snack and then we all sit together around the dining table and enjoy snack. Our jobs aren’t finished then, as we have to wash and dry our own cups and plates!! We are getting much better at this and I am sure they could help their grown ups with these jobs at home!!
