Sustrans IBike Project

This year, your child’s school will be participating in Sustrans’ I Bike project. Your child’s school might have also participated during the previous academic year.

I Bike delivers a variety of activities and events. These include led walks and rides, Dr Bike, Bikeability, Active Travel Breakfast and bike maintenance.

This Parent and Carer survey is collecting data for the purpose of evaluating and monitoring the I Bike project. We are interested to see the impact it has had on you and your child and your thoughts on what could make active travel easier for your child.

Active travel is when a journey is made by being physically active, such as walking, wheeling, cycling and scooting/skating.

The results may be used to influence and support further local and national funding bids and help define the health value of physical activity and active travel. It will help to understand and continue to improve the project. Specific comments on local infrastructure will be noted but is beyond the scope of I Bike.

  • We have noticed that an increased number of children are wearing digital watches that allow them to make calls, we recognise that this is a way to support your child in being independent when travelling to and from school. Unfortunately, children have been using these watches to make calls in the playground and in the clan rooms. If your child does wear one of these watches, can you please ensure the call function is switched off during the school day. If children are feeling unwell or there has been an incident, the office or their champion will give you a call.
  • We have the ongoing concern of sugary snacks in school for break times, for example lollipops, ‘brain lickers’, share bags of sweets and crisps, etc. I understand that some of this will be following the Halloween period, could you please try and ensure these types of treats, especially ones like lollipops (that are a choking hazard) are not brought in for break time. We have fruit available at the front foyer for any child that requires a snack.
  • I love that children can scoot and cycle to school, increasing their independence and daily exercise, however I am aware as our roll increases, the path along the front of the school and nursery is increasing busy in the morning and at pick up. We would like to recommend that children walk their scooters and bikes in this area (like they do when exiting the playground) to ensure everyone is safe when using the path.
  • Now that the weather has taken a turn for the winter, we are aware that more families are choosing to use the car park. Unfortunately, our families and champions this week, have reported their health and safety fears. More families are using the carpark at pick up that what it has capacity for, meaning that people are double parked, making it difficult to safely cross the car park and champs are not able to get out of spaces at the end of the day (staff have different shift patterns). If you are choosing to use the carpark, please ensure you are considerate of others and the safety of our children, families and staff, and are parking in a space.
  • Champion update:
  • – Mrs Love, Skye Clan Champ, starts her maternity leave on 25th November, we wish lots of luck and love for this exciting time. Mrs Bryson will take over as Skye Clan champ for the rest of the session.
  • – Mrs Birrell joins us on 21st November and will support with teachers non contact time, initially in Mull, Orkney, Shetland and Skye.

Christmas comes to Calderwood Primary for our first annual Christmas Fayre!
Featuring some of the best local crafts, you’ll be spoiled for choice when looking for a unique gift for someone special this year! There will also be activities for the kids (including a movie so you can peruse the stalls at your leisure!), prizes to be won for young and old, and even a visit from the big man himself!

Scottish Child Payment extends to under 16s and automatic payments for other benefits

•Scottish Child Payment has extended to include all eligible children from the age of six until they turn 16

•It is a payment of £100 every four weeks for each eligible child under the age of 16 •Check if you are eligible for Scottish Child Payment and apply now at mygov.scot/benefits or by calling 0800 182 2222•Families are also being urged to make sure they don’t miss out on a double December Bridging Payment of £260 •The December Bridging Payments will be made before the start of the Christmas holidays for children who receive Free School Meals on the basis of low income on 30 November. Payments for children who are subsequently registered and become eligible for Free School Meals ahead of the Christmas holidays will be made as soon as possible in the new year •You may also be eligible for other benefits, you can find out more here 

Clan Connects: Ben Lawers

Ben Lawers hosted our first Calderwood Connects for families on Friday. They had been learning about the West Lothian Food Bank as part of their Calder Communities Context. The children created a drama centring around everyone needs help at some point in their life, sharing different times when families might use a food back.

 

We also welcome representatives from West Lothian Foodbank along to watch.
