Ben Lawers and Ben Lomond Leavers’ Celebration

Our Ben Lawers and Ben Lomond clans came together on the morning of the 26th June to celebrate their time at Primary School with their families.

The children chose to do an “Oscars” themed celebration and shared successes and achievements through giving each other awards.

Thank you to our Parent Council, who funded the gift of a personalised keyring for every child in Ben Lawers and Ben Lomond – we really appreciate this gesture.

The children gave a fantastic performance for their final Connects and we wish them the best of luck as they move on to High School!

Green Skills Circular Economy Challenge

This term, Ben Lomond and Ben Lawers have been taking part in the Circular Economy Challenge which is partnership with Young Enterprise Scotland. Pupils have developed their enterprising skills in a real-life context, giving them an understanding of the world of business, design and technology and have the opportunity to create a company, carry out market research, create a business plan and advertise their product or service with its own logo and tagline.

Last week, the Ben’s took part in a showcase event where each group pitched their business plan to a panel of judges. They were impressed with how knowledgeable and creative our young entrepreneurs were. Thank you to our wonderful judges for providing us with valuable feedback.

Ben Lomond and Ben Lawers- Foxlake Adventures

On Tuesday, Ben Lomond and Ben Lawers went on an exciting trip to Foxlake Adventures in Dunbar for a leavers’ trip.  P7 worked on team building and resilience, while tackling the inflatable aqua park. We had a fantastic time and lots of fun!  We would like to say a big thank you to Miss Stark for organising and our parent helper for accompanying us.

Business Ambassador Visit

Primary 7 have been taking part in the Green Skills Circular Economy Challenge. Each group has been working hard to create a sustainable product/service which  follows the Circular Economy principles. After working on creating the perfect business pitch, we were kindly visited by our Conor Gray from Morrison Construction, who listened to our pitches and gave us feedback. We will now be continuing to improve our pitches, in preparation for the final competition.

Glasgow Science Centre Learning Lab

On Wednesday 1st May, Ben Lomond and Ben Lawers were visited by the Glasgow Science Centre Learning Lab. We learned about different types of energy sources and took part in a number of exciting experiments. We then got to take part in our own investigations into different types of renewable energy. We would like to say a big thank you to Morrisons Construction, who kindly funded this experience for our Primary 7’s.

“Hope” Anti-Bullying Production

Calderwood Primary had a visit from “Take Away Theatre” last month, who performed “Hope”, an anti-bullying production, to our P4-7 clans.  P4 and P6 clans also participated in follow-up workshops.  The performance was delivered by professional actors and was thought-provoking and entertaining for the children.  The children were captivated throughout the performance.  The workshops for P4 and P6 clans provided the opportunity for the children to explore the issues raised in the performance in greater depth.  Through Health and Wellbeing lessons, children also completed activities in clan related to the performance.

The Bens IDL Showcase

It was that time of the term again for P7!

When they came together to show off all the work and learning they have been doing during their IDL projects!

This term, we used Mural to collaborate and find out our areas of interest. We then tried to group them together to come up with an over arching topic. This term it was: Global Conflict.

See our work and planning here.

We spent 6 weeks learning about the following sub-topics:

World Leaders

Global Politics and Governments

Human Rights

Wars Throughout History

How the Media talks about conflict

To Assess, we created a Rubric together, so we knew what we had to do to be successful:

Last Thursday, the big event happened and we invited Primary 4-6 clans to the Discovery Den to see what we had achieved. Here is some of our feedback:

“For each and everyone I really liked how much time you put into this and how much you knew and I can’t believe how much is happening in our lives and I can’t believe it is true. I can’t wait until the next showcase.” – Harlen
