Burns clan – Descriptive Writing

In Burns clan we identified what we already know about descriptive writing, as we completed our cold assessment. A cold assessment means we had no help from our champion and everything we wrote about was based on all our amazing and creative knowledge from previous learning. Our topic was ‘all about me’ and we used a variety of adverbs, nouns and adjectives to create fantastic pieces of writing.

On Thursday we created a descriptive piece of art work to match our writing, we included lots of interesting and unique descriptive things about ourselves.

Later in the week, we explored what adjectives, adverbs and nouns are as we identified them in a text using highlighters, we also created beautiful posters for our wall to remind us of their definitions.

Tay Clan – Description Writing

To show what we know about writing a description text, Tay clan created their own sea creatures using line, shape and colour and then wrote a description. The more detail we added to our picture, meant that we would have more to describe in our writing.  We then wrote a description of our creatures. We tried to write interesting descriptions so that the reader could visualise our sea creature in their head.

We have built on what we know already by learning a bit more about description writing. We have learnt about the purpose of this writing, how to structure the text and have learnt an example description through actions with words called ‘Wolf Spiders’. This learning helped us to write our own description of Mr Tickle who is from the series of Mr Men and Little Miss books which we have loved listening to which show how we are all unique.

Descriptive Writing in Baird

This week, Baird clan have began to learn about descriptive writing. We started by creating self portraits that included visuals of our hobbies and interests. In reading, we used the game “Guess Who” to focus on using adjectives to describe others as well as ourselves.

Towards the end of the week, we completed our cold piece of descriptive writing, which included details about our physical appearance, our hobbies and interests and our goals for the future. We will use our feedback on this writing to help us to form our next steps for writing in the descriptive genre.

Ben Lawers – Description Writing 6.9.24

Hello Hello!

We have begun to explore description writing in Ben Lawers Clan. We have already written our cold piece to see how much we remember from last year. We wrote about our clan namesake, Ben Lawers.

Then Miss Quinn gave us feedback based on the description targets for P5.

Next, we have explored the key language features and structure of a descriptive text while also learning about a French landmark, The Lourve. We have identified proper, collective and common nouns. We have tried uplevelling sentences with adverbial phrases.

Our next step will be to plan and write a modelled text together, we will write all about The Calderwood Estate!

Finding our way in Schiehallion

Schiehallion have had an excellent first 2 weeks settling back into Calderwood life after our summer holidays. We have been very welcoming to the new pupils and champions who are now in our clan.

We have really enjoyed playing Getting to Know You games, as well beginning our PE lessons. We have also been learning about measure and forces, making posters, which you can see below.

This week we held our pupil council elections. We discussed what would make a good pupil council representative, and then a number of the students campaigned for election. This included making posters and making a speech to the rest of the clan

‘Our Clan is a Family’- Leven

Leven clan have had a fantastic start to P4, we have been working hard getting to know one another and  building our classroom community! We took part in a number of activities that allowed us to express ourselves and work co-operatively.

We explored the story “Our Class is a Family” and took part in a meaningful discussion about how we can make our clan a supportive and positive environment for all learners. We touched on important topics such as respect, growth mindset and kindness.

Leven clan also helped Mrs Bates lead our connects this week, where they introduced everyone to our first value ‘Belonging’. They presented what belonging meant to them and how they belong Calderwood.
