The Lorax in Primary 5

Today was our Lorax assembly. The main part of our assembly was retelling the story of the Lorax through a drama. We changed the story slightly and had lots of Loraxs and Oncellers to make sure that everyone could have a part. We really enjoyed getting dressed up and acting as different characters from the story. There were lots of different costumes and this helped to bring our drama to life. We also presented some of our learning about how to look after the environment and gave people tips for things that they can do. To finish our assembly we sang ‘The Rattlin’ Bog’ and Mrs. England accompanied us on the guitar. Some of our favourite things about the assembly include: that the Lorax was an eco warrier, the acting, singing the song at the end and all of it!! We were really pleased to hear that P3 said that they thought it was a fantastic assembly.

One Day in January

Well, it has certainly been an eventful week with all of the snow and ice.  The children have been very excited to come in with stories of snowmen and sledging.

This week was definitely more productive with the pupils, and teachers, back in the way of it.  So much new learning as the P1 children are now well settled and ready for a challenge.  Current skills in literacy and numeracy are being developed and new skills are being introduced.  The pupils each have their own learning journey that they will follow which is as it should be.

We are busy preparing for our upcoming assembly where we will share our learning about ‘All Things Scottish’ with the staff and pupils.  It will be exciting for the children to present their first assembly and will be good preparation for our parents’ assembly in the Spring.

For now, we wish you a lovely and safe weekend!

Winter Ready 2017-18

As part of the Council’s Winter Ready procedures we have set up a section on the Blog under the page ‘Winter Ready.’  This has a selection of ideas which you can use with the children if the weather is severe enough to prevent the schools from opening. Many of the activities require little in the way of resources but encourage the children to use their imagination, be active and, most of all, enjoy themselves in the snow – many of which did so today!

There is more information about Winter Ready on the council web page at http://www.westlothian.gov.uk/winter which gives greater detail about how you can keep up to date with the latest news.

Happy New Year from P2

Happy New Year from Mrs Quinn, I hope everyone had a lovely break and enjoyed time with friends and family.

In Primary 2 we have already started  looking at Space and Planets and checking the night and morning skies . We will also be doing a little mini topic looking at Scottish activities and language we can use at home and in and around the class room.

I have attached a Homework Sheet for the next fortnight if you need to speak to me about this let me know. On the sheet are things that are being followed in the class.

I think it is easy to understand and follow

Happy New Year from all of us in Primary One!

Mrs Clegg and I would like to wish everyone a very happy and healthy 2018!  We were all happy to be back in school and the children have settled in well.  It has been a week of getting back to routine especially after the hectic run up to Christmas.

We are very excited to be starting our formal reading activities and look forward to lots of independent writing.  We will be introducing more written work in our maths.  We have entitled our new topic ‘All Things Scottish’ and will be working hard to learn about culture, landscape, language, mapping and symbols.

Until next time, have a lovely weekend!

Happy New Year from Primary 5!

We started 2018 at school by thinking about our favourite day of the Christmas holidays and also our aims for the coming year. On Thursday Primary 3 came to visit us so that we could organise our reading buddies. As well as meeting our buddy, we worked together to make a poster about each other. This helped us to get to know each other a little bit better. We are looking forward to meeting up again next month to do some reading together.

This week in French we have been learning about classroom commands, for example how to say ‘come in’. We have also been busy developing our ICT skills. We were given our Glow passwords and are now able to access Yammer. This means that we can communicate with our classmates about our learning, for example asking a question about homework.

P4-7 Digital Learning-Yammer

Primary 4-7 have been learning to use Glow as a tool to enhance their learning. Yammer is a facility on Glow where pupils, with the guidance and support of their teachers, can communicate with one another on a social media platform. Yammer is available to and used by pupils across Scotland up to the age of 18. Each class in our school has its own private page within Yammer to provide us with an area which is entirely appropriate and useful for our learning. One of the rules the pupils have agreed to is that they click onto their class group and read/post within that group only to ensure that we are using Yammer to enhance our own learning. The pupils have begun to experience a wide range of benefits to their learning by using this tool and will be reporting on this shortly.

Visit from Nanda

We had a visit from Nanda this morning. She told us about the Christian Holy Book – the Bible. We looked at the New Testament that was originally written 2700 years ago in Hebrew and the New Testament written in Ancient Greek. We found out that the Bible has been translated into thousands of different languages and written as different versions for different people, like children. Nanda told us about some of the stories in the Bible. All of the stories in the Bible are about people and their relationship with God.
