新年快乐 -Happy New Year!

Primary One has enjoyed looking at Chinese New Year as part of our RME this week.  We learned that there are twelve animals in the zodiac calendar and that this year is the ‘Year of the Dog’.  We also discovered that the children born in 2012 are in the year of the dragon.

The pupils thought the parades, fireworks and lanterns looked beautiful.  They also fancied the idea of receiving money in a red envelope.  We know that the colour red represents good luck and gold represents wealth.  We all want to try some of the delicious dumplings that families enjoy!

Next week, we hope to create our own Chinese lanterns!

Have a lovely weekend.

This week in Primary 5

We have been very busy in p5 this week. We have been learning how to write an informal letter. All of p5 pretended to be highlanders and we were writing letters home to family and friends. In our letter we told family and friends that we were safe after our long journey and described what our new life was like.

This week was the Scottish poetry competition. Primary 5 finalists were Corrin, Ava, Ellie R and Kaitlyn. We were very proud of them all and a huge well done to Corrin!

Next week we have our basketball tournament we which we are very excited about.

P4 Researchers

This week in Primary 4 we have been researching information about rivers and mountains. We worked in groups and were able to choose a river or mountain that we wanted to find out more about. When we had gathered our information, we had to decide how we were going to display this. Some of us made posters, some made PowerPoints and some groups even made 3D models. We will finish these next week and display them with a world map to show where they are.

We’re missing Mrs Manning and want to say ‘Get well soon!’

Reading Buddies are Brilliant!

Primary One pupils are certainly enjoying reading time with their P7 buddies. Today was the second time that they’ve met. There was some excellent discussion about books and why the children would choose one book over the other. Primary One loved reading their books to the buddies providing them with a new audience! P7 pupils shared their favourite picture book from when they were younger. The little ones found that quite interesting. A great way to end the afternoon!

P4 Poetry

Primary 4 have been working really hard to learn and recite Scottish poetry. All pupils recited their poem to the class with fantastic confidence, fluency and expression. It was very difficult as the standard was so high but Mrs Manning managed to identify 7 finalists within the class. The class were given the option to have the teachers decide the pupils to go through to the school final, the pupils to vote for them or for the class to vote with the teachers having the final say. The vast majority of the class decided we should use option 3 – a class vote with the teachers having the final say. We discussed how a vote should be anonymous and that pupils should not ask who voted for them or tell people who they voted for in order to keep the vote fair and confidential. Each pupil received 4 votes (as we have 4 spaces for the school final) and voted for their favourite 4 recitals using the following guidance.

  • Vote for your favourite recitals – not the people you are closest to
  • Look for expression, gesture, knowledge, Scots words, eye contact, facial expressions, pace, volume, actions, confidence
  • Think about variety of poems

Mrs Green checked that each of us had voted for four different people then counted and verified the votes, which incredibly matched the teacher decision! It was a very close result! Our 3 runners up receive a 5 house point sticker and a huge round of applause from the class for their terrific recitals. Our 4 finalists will go through to our poetry competition next week we can’t wait!

Well done to every one of our P4 Poetry Superstars – every pupil in the class did an amazing job!
