RME in P1

Today, we learned about the Good Samaritan. We learned that a ‘Good Samaritan’ is someone who is kind and unselfish towards others. We thought about different ways we could do this.

Jacob thinks we could be Good Samaritans by helping people who are injured. Zander told us that he helped his friend in the playground when he fell over.

James thought we could be a Good Samaritan by giving people money, so we discussed how we can do this (by donating to charity).

Emily thinks we can be a Good Samaritan by helping out at home.

Our target for the next week is to make sure we are a Good Samaritan at least once a day.

Primary 7 STEM week

What a busy week we have had through STEM week. Firstly we visited the planetarium which was so impressive. The pupils asked lots of questions and found out lots of information about our solar system, the International Space Station and our night sky. We learned how to detect the North Star by following two stars in the constellation The Plough/Big  Dipper. Primary 7’s made a model of the Sun, Moon and Earth to show how they orbit each other. Perhaps the most heated part was the class debate on the conspiracy theory of the Moon Landing. Such interesting facts surround this theory but when it came to the class vote the believers won the vote with their convincing scientific arguments. For our open morning the class split into teams and used a variety of resources to make a working Moon Buggy.

Orienteering.

Yesterday we went orienteering at Polkemmet country park. P5 from Miss Parks class came too.

First we had a picnic in the park as it was a nice sunny day then had some time to play.

We met Hannah, a park ranger, who told use what orienteering was.

“Orienteering is when you read maos and have to find letters and numbers ” – Jaxon

“Its a bit like a giant treasure hunt” – Lewis.

We split into teams had to follow a route on a map using red and green markers. It was quite easy to follow.

Then Hannah showed us how to use a compass and read an OS map.

“The red arrow on a compass always shows North” – Ross

” All maps have arrows to show North” – Lucy

Once we could read the map we were sent off around the park to find our markers and record on our map.

We had a fab time and would love to go back.

Science week P1 – Day 4

Thank you to all the parents who came to our Open Morning today! We hope you enjoyed finding out what we have learned this week and enjoyed doing some space activities with us.

Science week in P1 – Day 3

Today we learned lots of facts about the sun. We already knew that the sun is a star, and today we learned that stars are big burning balls of gas! We learned that the sun is the biggest thing in our solar system and looks so big because it is much closer to Earth than other stars. We learned that you could fit Earth inside the sun one million times!

We also learned a bit more about the other planets in our solar system. We looked at the order of the planets, their names, size and colour. We enjoyed listening to some solar system songs on YouTube! We then painted the planets for our walk display.

We are looking forward to showing and telling you everything we have learned tomorrow morning at the open morning!

Science week P4/3

We had a great time at the Cosmos Planetarium and learnt a lot about space. We also learnt the Moon isn’t made of cheese! Rhys said the show was awesome! We have been learning about the different phases of the Moon in class, Callum used grapes to illustrate the phases!

Science Week – p4/3

We designed space buggies after brainstorming some ideas. Our criteria was to design a working model of a Moon buggy, with moving parts. We had to draw a diagram and gather resources, a big thank you to everyone that brought in junk. Tomorrow (Thursday 15th March) we are having an open morning to showcase our week, if you are able to make it along we are gathering in the school assembly hall at 9am. We hope you can make it 🙂.
